Booster Seats

It’s generally best practice to start with a high-back booster because it provides more support and helps encourage proper seating position. High-back boosters also offer some additional side protection, so we typically recommend using one until your child is a confident and consistent booster rider.

No. Using lower anchors with a booster seat is a helpful feature, but it is not required. Lower anchors help keep the booster stable and secure the seat so it does not become a projectile when it’s empty.

Both options are safe. A standalone booster seat often lasts longer, has a lower-profile design, and can be more comfortable for bigger kids.

A great option for bigger kids is the Diono Cambria 2 thanks to its wider seat design and taller height and weight limits. Another favorite is the Peg Perego Viaggio Flex 120, which skips traditional armrests to give kids a little extra space and easier buckle access.

The average child starts fitting an adult seat belt between the ages of 10-12. If your child passes the 5 step test, they are ready to ditch the booster! Keep in mind that a child may pass the 5 step test in one car,  but fail in another so it's important to retest in every car they will be driving in! 

A child can move to a booster seat once they outgrow their harnessed car seat by height, weight, or torso height and meet the minimum requirements for their booster seat.

In general, if a child is at least 40 pounds, 43 inches tall, around 5 years old, and mature enough to sit properly for the entire ride, it can also be safe to make the switch to a booster seat.

Try a booster with cut outs like the Chicco Kidfit or a more narrow booster like a Peg Perego Viaggio Flex 120. Remember, seat belt extenders are never safe for car seats or boosters.
