People are asking, and manufacturers are listening: we need narrow boosters! The Baby Trend Koa Slim delivers, at a price point that is more realistic for many families than previously possible. When a new car seat comes out, I'm always looking for it to solve a problem that hasn't already been solved by another seat, or to do it better. The Koa Slim does just that.

Despite more and more families in need of slim seats, the selection of viable highback boosters has been a bit sparse. The price tag on the frequently recommended Peg Viaggio Flex 120 just isn't realistic for many families.

The Koa is a Target exclusive retailing for just $79.99. The pared-down version, the Tova, comes in at an even lower price point and is available at other retailers.

The list of narrow boosters that work with non-removable head restraints has historically been small. When you need both features, your options become very limited, so finding one at $79.99 is a big win for many families!

Baby Trend Koa Slim for 3 Across: 16.99 Inches Wide + Easier Buckling

As someone with a special interest in helping families fit three across, the Koa has a few things going for it:

• It's just 16.99 inches wide. At just under 17 inches, it stands a chance of working in some tight three-across setups.
• Belt-path cutouts leave more room for buckling. This is similar to one of our favorite features on the Chicco KidFit.
• Flip-up armrests give kids more room to buckle. They make it easier for kids to get in and out and get buckled, especially next to another car seat. Just remember that the armrests must be moved back into position while the seat is in use.

How Long Can You Use the Baby Trend Koa Slim?

The Koa Slim is a 2-in-1 booster, meaning it transitions from highback to backless mode. Here’s how its limits play out:

• The 100-pound highback limit is plenty for most kids. It’s fairly standard and will be sufficiently high for most kids.
• The 120-pound backless limit is hard to come by, and we love it. Your child also needs to remain within the Koa’s 57" height limit, though, so the higher weight limit won’t necessarily mean they can use it longer.
• At 57 inches, your child may still need a booster. Both modes have a height range of 44–57". Some children will fit the vehicle seat belt properly when they outgrow the Koa, while others will need a different booster.

The top belt guide position for highback mode is 20", which is respectable. Backless mode also includes a shoulder belt positioner. Don’t throw it away with the box!

Does the Baby Trend Koa Slim Have LATCH?

Yes. The Koa Slim includes standard J-hook lower anchor connectors. Using them is optional, and they can help keep the booster in place when it isn’t occupied.

Baby Trend says the lower anchors can be used throughout the Koa’s stated weight range in both modes. Check your vehicle manual for compatible anchor locations, especially if you’re working on a three-across setup. Your child is always secured with the vehicle’s lap-and-shoulder belt, and the Koa manual says to buckle the booster with the vehicle belt when it’s empty, too.

Does the Baby Trend Koa Slim Fold? Yes, But There's a Catch for Air Travel

Now, onto the (potentially) more exciting features! The Koa Slim is a folding booster, which is something we’re starting to see more of in the market. It always perks up my ears because the highback booster phase can be especially tricky for air travel.

• For flying: The Koa can’t be used on the plane. Folded, it measures 23" H x 11" L x 17" W, so check your airline and aircraft’s overhead-bin dimensions before counting on it as a carry-on.
• For storage: Folding it could make it easier to keep in the trunk when you don’t need it installed.
• For third-row access: It’s also easier to move a folded booster in and out of the third row when needed.

It may not be the unicorn travel solution many of us are looking for, but travel isn’t the only reason a folding booster is useful.

The Koa Slim's Flip-Down Sun Visors

Another unique aspect of the Koa is its flip-down sun visors. They give the seat a slightly robotic look, but, hey, if that makes your booster rider happy, even better!

• For shade: The visors rotate down beside the child’s head. I haven’t personally heard overwhelming feedback from booster riders that sun in their eyes is a concern, and the headrest itself seems like it would get the job done.
• For sibling privacy: My first thought was that the visors might actually be more helpful as a little separation between kids sitting next to each other.
• If your child doesn’t want them: They’re optional. Just rotate them out of the way.

Take them or leave them, or let your booster rider decide!

If you need a narrow booster, especially one that works with non-removable head restraints, the Koa Slim gives families a much more realistic option at $79.99.
