Graco SlimFit3 LX 3 in 1 Review | What I Think After 4 Kids! (2026)

Car Seats

Car Seats

Hi there, you must be looking for a slim car seat! Or maybe you're trying to figure out a tough car seat situation. Either way, you're in the right place. The Graco SlimFit3 LX is likely the car seat we recommend most at The Car Mom, and most of the time, it's the one we'll tell you to try first.

Kelly even calls it the 3-Across GOAT!

It's truly slim, it's relatively affordable for a car seat, and it just fits in so many scenarios. It doesn't get slimmer than this. If this seat doesn't work for your narrow needs, likely nothing else will. This is the one to beat!

I'm Carly, a CPST and mom of 3, and I just might crown this seat the most versatile in my collection. I currently have two, and they have made countless scenarios possible for me, both personally and professionally.

Comparing narrow options? Here's our full list of the slimmest car seats for family vehicles.

Consider the Graco SlimFit3 LX if:

  • You need 3 across. This is one of the narrowest seats you can buy, and the seat belt lock-off is a crucial part of why it succeeds in 3 across setups.
  • You're trying to solve a tough car seat situation. When a back seat puzzle has you stumped, this is usually the first seat we'll recommend trying.
  • You want a truly slim seat that's relatively affordable. At about $300, it's less expensive than many other super narrow options.
  • You want a versatile secondary seat. It's the seat to have on deck for fitting relatives in the back seat, for travel, or for moving between vehicles.

Keep looking if:

  • Chemical flame retardant-free is a priority.
  • You want the absolute easiest installation possible.

How Wide Is the Graco SlimFit3 LX?

The Graco SlimFit3 LX is 16.7 inches wide, and believe me, that is very different from 17.0 inches when you're working with those really tight setups. Many car seats claim to be narrow in name and in advertising, but this one is the real deal.

At 16.7 inches wide, the SlimFit3 LX is noticeably slimmer than many convertible car seats.

Good to Know
Best used After your child outgrows their infant car seatRear-faces in 2 recline positions Once rear-facing limits are outgrownHarness must sit at or above the shoulders When ready for the vehicle lap + shoulder beltMust be at least 4 years old · high-back booster mode only

Always go by whichever limit your child reaches first — height or weight. Limits shown are for the Graco SlimFit3 LX; the seat has a 10-year lifespan from its date of manufacture. Booster mode can't be used on an airplane (aircraft have lap belts only).

Graco SlimFit3 LX Forward-Facing: Where It Shines

For forward-facing, the SlimFit3 LX goes to the fairly standard 65 pounds and 49 inches. It shines in forward-facing mode due to the seat belt lock-off, which makes for a generally easy installation and is a crucial component of its success in 3 across setups. (Not sure if your child is ready? Here's when to move your car seat forward-facing.)

The SlimFit3 LX’s built-in lock-off makes forward-facing seat belt installs easier.

Tech Tip: For forward-facing seats, the harness straps must come from above (or be even with) the tops of the shoulders. If the harness can no longer do this, the seat is outgrown!

Graco SlimFit3 LX Booster Mode: Worth Buying It For

Yes, this is one of the rare all-in-ones whose booster mode is a reason to buy it. Highback booster mode maxes out at 100 pounds and 57 inches, and although there are longer-lasting highback boosters, many children are ready for a backless booster before this point anyway.

Highback booster mode: 40–100 pounds and 43–57 inches.

It's not often that I specifically recommend all-in-one seats because of the booster mode, but unlike most all-in-ones, this booster mode is actually something special. The SlimFit3 LX is one of the narrowest highback booster seats available, making it one of the only boosters that can work in the tightest setups. In fact, there are times this seat may be the best choice even if you're buying it only to use as a booster. It is less expensive than the other super narrow booster options!

Tech Tip: Boosters are usually more challenging than harnessed seats for 3 across, because you have to be able to actually buckle! The narrow belt path and lack of armrests on the SlimFit3 LX provide space for buckling that other boosters might not, but using a harnessed seat for as long as possible is generally recommended. (Here's more on when it's safe to transition to a booster.)

Can You Remove the Cup Holders on the Graco SlimFit3 LX?

Yes. The cup holders are removable, which can free up just enough room in a tight 3 across installation.

Is the Graco SlimFit3 LX Worth It?

Yes. It's a great car seat all around, and even if a squished back seat isn't currently your main sticking point, the SlimFit3 LX will likely come in clutch in some future scenario, and just might prevent you from needing to purchase an additional seat down the road.

Worth the Splurge as a Primary or Secondary Seat

We all have different budgets for car seats, and whether the $300 price point would be a splurge for your primary or your secondary seat, I'd highly encourage considering whether there is room to include the SlimFit3 LX in your lineup. It may actually save you money in the long run!

If your primary seat prioritized other specific features, having a seat like the SlimFit3 LX on deck can be a godsend:

  • When you need a narrow option, like fitting relatives in the back seat with the child
  • For travel (more on that below)
  • When you need something easier to move between vehicles than, say, your big bulky rotating seat

Forecast Your Family

As The Car Mom saying goes: "Forecast your family!" A car seat is certainly an easier replacement than a vehicle is, but I can't tell you the number of families I have had to help swap two Graco 4Evers for two Graco SlimFit3 LXs when baby #3 is on the way! In this case, not only is a large "forever" investment unusable before fully utilized, a second investment into new seats has to be made. If you think 3 across is in your future, go ahead and get the slim seats from the start! (And if you're car shopping too, here's which cars fit three car seats across.)

Is the Graco SlimFit3 LX Good for Travel?

Yes, and it's an underrated pick. The Graco SlimFit3 LX isn't your traditional travel seat choice, but maybe it should be! While "lightweight and inexpensive" are usually the key words people are looking for when shopping for a travel car seat, I have a different perspective to offer.

In addition to the ease of schlepping through the airport and onto the plane (and yes, we recommend using your car seat on board whenever possible!), one huge consideration that often gets overlooked is how everything is going to shake out on the other end when it comes time to actually use the car seat in the vehicle. Ride shares and rentals can bring unexpected challenges, and the SlimFit3 LX is prepared to tackle almost all of them:

  • It works with tricky headrests (here's more on non-removable headrests and car seats)
  • It's relatively easy to install
  • It's pretty compact front to back
  • It gives you a way better chance of safely fitting 3 people across a 2nd row than other seats will

Plus, it's really not that heavy at 19 pounds, and it can fit down the aisle of the plane on a car seat cart! For more tips, see our ultimate guide to traveling with car seats.

Is the Graco SlimFit3 LX FAA Approved?

Yes, in harness mode only. Booster mode can't be used on an airplane because aircraft seats only have lap belts. (See which car seats are FAA-approved.)

Graco SlimFit3 LX Drawbacks: There's No Perfect Seat

Every seat is going to have some drawbacks, whether in general or for specific circumstances, and that's no exception here.

  • The 40-pound rear-facing limit. If your goal is to rear-face absolutely as long as possible, or if your child is higher on the growth curve, this seat may not be the ideal choice.
  • A shorter harness. The harness is on the shorter side of average, at about 17 inches, so kids with longer torsos may outgrow the seat before they are ready to transition to a booster. But my nearly 7-year-old, who is just below the 50th percentile for height, still fits!
  • Front-to-back space when rear-facing. While narrow side to side, it is not the most compact front-to-back, and only has 2 recline positions for rear-facing, so it may not work when that space is limited in the vehicle.
  • Not great for itty bitties. Conversely, it may not recline enough for a good newborn position, and combined with the bulkier headrest and a lowest harness height of about 7 inches (with the insert), this seat often just won't provide a safe fit for itty bitties. (If you're expecting a small baby, see the best car seats for preemies.)
  • Installation can loosen over time. The lower anchor installation can be used for the entire 40-pound rear-facing limit, but you'll often need the ability to install slightly off-center with the seat belt for 3 across, and because of the narrow belt path, the seat can tend to tip or loosen over time.

Graco SlimFit3 LX vs. SlimFit LX vs. SlimFit 3-in-1: Don't Buy the Wrong Seat!

Before you add to cart, here's an important warning when shopping: Graco has 3 different seats with frustratingly similar names, and it can be easy to accidentally purchase the wrong one.

Repeat after me: Kunningham or Katrina. These are the current names of the fashions for the correct seat. If it's not Kunningham or Katrina, it's not the one you're looking for! The SlimFit 3-in-1 and the SlimFit LX 3-in-1 (yes, I know…) are completely different seats with a completely different definition of slim.

The Final Verdict

The Graco SlimFit3 LX is a great car seat all around, and it's likely the one we recommend most. There's a reason Kelly calls it the 3-Across GOAT! It's truly slim, relatively affordable, and it just fits in so many scenarios. If you need a slim car seat or you're trying to figure out a tough car seat situation, this is the one we'll tell you to try first, because it doesn't get slimmer than this. I just might crown it the most versatile seat in my collection: it's a rare all-in-one with a booster mode worth buying it for, an underrated travel seat, and a smart backup that could save you from buying another seat down the road. Just know its limits: it's not the seat for maximum rear-facing time, longer torsos, or itty bitty newborns. And remember: Kunningham or Katrina!

About 19 pounds, which is light enough to bring through the airport and fit down the plane aisle on a car seat cart.
