Joie Basil Booster Seat Review: Pros, Cons, Height & Weight Limits

The Joie Basil 2-in-1 is a mid-range seat in terms of price, though it’s anything but mid. This booster is an incredible value, so let’s take a look at what you get for just a slightly higher price than an entry-level seat, yet hundreds of dollars less than some other boosters. 

I’m Carly, a CPST and mom of 3, who snatched up the Basil nearly as soon as it came out to add to my collection as a “secondary” seat. I have found it to be a versatile addition to use amongst my two booster riders, and by no means should it be categorized as only a secondary seat, that’s just how it works for us!

Joie Basil Comfort and Design

We cannot start anywhere other than the Basil’s super padded, memory foam seat cushion. I have in fact sat in a demo version of this seat, and can confirm that it’s Squish City, and I’ve heard numerous accounts that a comment on the comfort was the initial reaction from kids trying the seat for the first time. 

The overall appearance is quite similar to the much pricier Nuna Aace at first glance. While the fabric isn’t certified as chemical flame retardant free, Joie Baby has assured us that they do very extensive and strict testing to ensure that their products are free from harmful chemicals. It’s a soft, jersey-like material, and the Crimson color has a special ability to look either pink or red, depending on what you (or your kid) want it to be. The seat skips the common red color on belt guides and labels, instead opting for a more subtle teal, which may appeal more to kids as they reach those upper years of still needing a booster, but they’re not necessarily thrilled about it. 

Tech Tip: Most kids still need a booster until at least 10-12 years old and around 60 inches, despite much lower requirements by law!

• High-back mode: 40–110 lbs, up to 57 inches
• Backless mode: 50–120 lbs, up to 60 inches
• Minimum age: 4 years (5+ recommended)

The head rest and side wings provide excellent support for new and sleeping booster riders. Highback mode accommodates kids up to 57 inches and 110 pounds, and backless mode goes to 60 inches and 120 pounds. Many boosters have overall limits of 57” and 100 pounds, which means you'd almost certainly need to purchase another booster later, whereas a 60” limit is much more likely to last through all of the booster years, and some kids really need that larger weight range before they can safely graduate from a booster.

Unfortunately, the current list of options, and especially lower cost ones, that will solve this problem is very short. At the other end of the spectrum, I found that the Basil provided an excellent belt fit on my kids when they were right at the lower limits of the seat, which is not always the case. 

Joie Basil Pros

After using the Joie Basil with my own kids, these are the features that stand out the most:

• Excellent value for the price. It offers premium features at a mid-range price point.
• Extremely comfortable memory foam seat cushion. The comfort of the seat is one of the first things kids notice and comment on.
• Soft, high-quality fabrics. The jersey-like fabric feels premium, and Joie tests its materials to ensure they're free from harmful chemicals.
• Great fit for both smaller and larger riders. I found it provided excellent seat belt fit even for kids at the lower end of the height and weight range.
• High height and weight limits. It accommodates children up to 110 pounds in high-back mode and 120 pounds in backless mode, allowing many kids to use it through all of their booster years.
• Easy-to-use lower anchor connectors. The connectors attach and release smoothly, making it simple to move the booster between vehicles while keeping it securely positioned.

Joie Basil Cons

No booster seat is perfect, and there are a few things to keep in mind before purchasing.

• Shorter seat pan. Kids with longer legs may find it less comfortable on longer drives.
• Cupholders are shallow. They're functional but not especially deep or conveniently positioned.
• Not ideal for three-across in high-back mode. The narrow base helps, but the wide side wings can make fitting three seats across difficult.
• May not work with some fixed vehicle head restraints. Compatibility depends on your vehicle, so it's worth checking before purchasing.

Joie Basil Alternatives

If your vehicle has non-removable head restraints or you're looking for additional premium features, the Nuna Aace or Peg Viaggio Flex 120 may be better options.

For shorter trips and everyday driving, the Joie Basil performs very well. However, because the seat pan is shorter than some competitors, kids with longer legs may become less comfortable on extended drives.

Is the Joie Basil good for three-across?

Usually not in high-back mode. While the base of the seat is fairly narrow, the side wings are wide enough that three-across installations can be challenging in most vehicles. The backless version may fit more easily depending on your vehicle.

Is the Joie Basil compatible with every vehicle?
