Features We Love

The Ascent is Subaru’s biggest SUV, but it’s one of the smallest three-row midsize SUVs you can buy, and that matters a lot once car seats come into the picture. It’s safe, reliable, and all-wheel drive standard, and the second row has some genuinely thoughtful family features. Just know going in that the third row is tight, and you’ll need to be picky about car seats to make it work.

  • Lower anchors and top tethers in both second-row captain’s chairs: each captain’s chair has its own set of lower anchors and a tether anchor, so installs in the second row are straightforward.
  • Three top tethers in the third row: every third-row seat has a tether anchor, plus there’s one set of lower anchors shared between the middle seat and an outboard seat.
  • Removable head restraints in every seat: that really helps with car seat and booster compatibility, especially in the tight third row.
  • Seat belt pretensioners in the second row: both second-row window seats have pretensioners, which tighten the seat belt within milliseconds in a crash.
  • Ceiling vents and built-in sunshades: you get ceiling vents in both the second and third rows, plus sunshades in the second row.
  • Room for a tall driver with a compact rear-facing seat: with a Graco Extend2Fit 3-in-1 set to its most upright rear-facing position, I still had plenty of room up front.
  • Standard all-wheel drive in a shorter package: every Ascent is all-wheel drive, and the shorter wheelbase is easier to live with in a city.
  • A height-adjustable power tailgate: you can set how high it opens, which is great for shorter parents and smaller garages.
Car Mom Review

The Exterior

Subaru’s Biggest SUV Is One of the Smallest Three-Row SUVs

The Ascent came out for the 2019 model year as Subaru’s first three-row SUV, and it’s still the biggest car they make. But compared to the rest of the midsize three-row lineup, it’s not a big car. It’s actually one of the smallest three-row midsize SUVs you can get. The best comparisons are more compact three-row SUVs like the Toyota Highlander, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Kia Sorento.

A Shorter Wheelbase and All-Wheel Drive Standard

The Ascent is built on the same platform as the Subaru Forester, so it has a shorter wheelbase but still fits a second and third row. You could make the argument that it’s good for families who live in a city, because it’s not very long. Every Ascent is also all-wheel drive standard, so if you’re in Chicago or New York, short wheelbase plus all-wheel drive checks a lot of boxes.

  • 260-horsepower turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder
  • CVT transmission
  • Up to 5,000 pounds of towing
  • 19 mpg city, 25 to 26 mpg highway

I do find the CVT four-cylinder a little underpowered, and it’s had some issues. The Ascent did have way more reliability issues early on in 2019, but I feel like the newer ones have done a really good job, so I do think you’re getting a reliable car. You’re getting a safe car. There are just also other cars that do that.

The Ascent Onyx Edition Has a Blacked-Out Look

In terms of the exterior, it’s not my favorite, and it’s starting to look old. I know Subaru has a unique look, but I think the Forester is a much better looking vehicle. I do like the Onyx trim I tested, though. The blacked-out accents look really nice against this deep, dark teal color. Around back, you get roof rails and wraparound taillights with an interesting design.

The Ascent Is Ready for an Overhaul

Subaru hasn’t done a major update to the Ascent since it debuted. It got a refresh for 2023 that was mostly exterior updates, and that’s about it. I’m ready to be wowed by Subaru. I want them to simplify the exterior and improve the interior.

Onyx trim’s blacked-out accents stand out

First Row

Up front, you get about 42 inches of legroom, which is right in line with the Toyota Highlander. The interior design just has a lot going on, and it doesn’t feel very well integrated. It feels clunky to me. There are things I like, though. The green stitching on the Onyx trim is actually kind of cool.

Comfortable Ascent Front Seats with a Knee Extender

The seats are nice and comfortable, and I like the optional leg extender for more knee support on the driver’s side. The passenger seat doesn’t have it, which I wish it did. I also like the floor mats. They’re a two-toned carpet with the Ascent name on them.

19 Cup Holders, but None That Fit My Water Bottle

The Ascent has 19 cup holders, but unfortunately not one of them is great. I would rather have one that fits my water bottle than three that fit nothing. The front cubby spaces aren’t quite it for me either, because things are just going to fall out, and the cup holders block the charging spot.

  • An old-fashioned gear selector, which a lot of people do like
  • A pretty deep center console for the size of the vehicle
  • One USB-A and one USB-C port up front

An 11.6-Inch Touchscreen with Standard Wireless CarPlay

The screen is not my favorite. Almost everything runs through the 11.6-inch touchscreen, so thank goodness wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. A six-speaker sound system is standard, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon system is available.

Second Row

The second row is where the Ascent starts to pick up the pace. The amenities back here are really good. But second-row legroom is really tight, and it’s the first thing that limits which car seats will work. You have about 38.6 inches of second-row legroom, which is about the same as the Toyota Highlander, but the Hyundai Santa Fe gives you 42.3 inches.

Ascent Captain’s Chairs or a Three-Across Bench

The Ascent comes with either captain’s chairs or a bench seat. I tested the captain’s chairs. I wouldn’t call the bench a three-across machine, but three slim seats can work, like two Graco SlimFit3 LXs and an infant seat.

Lower Anchors and Top Tethers in Both Captain’s Chairs

With the captain’s chairs, both seats have their own lower anchors and a top tether anchor. The lower anchors are tucked behind covers, and you can expose them by just pulling the covers down. If you can get them to stay down (which I’m sure they would over time), installs would be even easier. You can also put them back into place.

A Compact Rear-Facing Seat Fits Behind a Tall Driver

I know this looks like good clearance, and it is, but I’m giving more credit to the car seat than the car. This is the Graco Extend2Fit 3-in-1, and we have it at its most upright rear-facing recline position. If you’re a taller driver looking at a smaller car like this one, I think it’s a really good rear-facing option. I had plenty of room, and I could have reclined my seat more or been a little taller and still been fine.

This just might not be the car for you if you really want a big rotating car seat. I think you’re going to have trouble fitting one back here, even if you’re not a taller driver. (See Car Seat Setup for the seats that work best.)

A Baseless Infant Seat Makes Ascent Third-Row Access Easier

On the other side, I brought the Joie Mint, a baseless infant seat. There’s no base, so you install it with the lower anchors every time. It takes up very little room front to back, which makes it a good option for a vehicle that’s tight on second-row legroom.

The aisle between the captain’s chairs is very small. A kid can get through, but a kid with a big school backpack is going to be tighter, and I’d have a lot of trouble fitting through there. So you might end up using the tilt-and-slide for third-row access. With a baseless infant seat, I could take the baby out, tilt the seat, get my child into the third row, and then just click the baby back into place.

Ceiling Vents, Sunshades, and Heated Second-Row Seats

I was comfortable back here. I can recline these seats, and I can slide them forward, which you’re probably going to have to do to give the third row a little more legroom.

  • Ceiling vents
  • Built-in sunshades
  • Door cup holders (still not as wide as I would like, but a decent size), plus two more cup holders and extra cubbies
  • Two leather seatback pockets
  • Charging ports
  • Heated seats on this trim level

Third Row

Three Shallow Seats Make the Ascent Third Row Tight

On paper, the Ascent has 31.7 inches of third-row legroom. In person, this third row is really interesting, because it’s very tight on legroom, the seats themselves are pretty shallow, and they shoved three seats back here. That’s a recipe for disaster. We tried a couple car seat combinations, and very few worked. I’m also very tight on headroom back here, and I’m not even sure a rear-facing car seat would fit.

The Middle Seat Is Your Best Bet for a Third-Row Car Seat

The seat we got a good install with was the Graco Tranzitions. It’s one of my go-to third-row seats because of how low profile it is. It doesn’t sit very high off the ground, so you maximize your legroom, which is very important in this vehicle. The buckles are so close together that several car seats were too wide to fit in some positions, and I would have a very, very hard time putting two car seats back here. I can’t think of a car seat narrow enough to go in that other seat.

I wish Subaru hadn’t put three seats back there. The Hyundai Santa Fe has two really good third-row seats, and I could fit any car seat in them. By adding a third seat, the Ascent ends up with hardly any car seat compatibility back here.

Boosters Are Even Harder in the Ascent Third Row

If you’re thinking, “That’s okay, I’ll have booster-age kids back there,” remember that boosters are even harder, because boosters are wider and your child needs everyday access to the buckle. With the Tranzitions installed, the buckle actually sits kind of behind the car seat. You’re going to need a narrow booster, like the Peg Perego Viaggio Flex 120, which is an expensive seat. When a vehicle has this many specifics about what works, you end up spending a lot of money on car seats just to make it work.

Ceiling Vents and Two Cup Holders on Each Side

I’m impressed with the amount of cup holders back here. You get two on each side, and you still have the ceiling vents. You only have charging on one side, though. All the head restraints in the Ascent are removable, which helps with compatibility. It’s really just the size of the third row that causes problems.

Trunk

How Much Cargo Space Is in the 2027 Ascent?

The Ascent has 18 cubic feet of trunk space behind the third row, which is competitive with the Toyota Highlander and Hyundai Santa Fe. I’m not expecting a huge trunk back here, because it’s not a big vehicle. I’d honestly prefer even less trunk and more third-row legroom.

A Travel Stroller Fits with the Ascent Third Row Up

The Mockingbird travel stroller fits back here. A full-size stroller would be a lot harder. It’s not impossible, but it would take up your entire trunk. Underneath the floor, there’s more storage and a spot for the hidden cargo cover.

A Height-Adjustable Power Tailgate

The third-row seats are very easy to lay flat for more cargo space. You also get a power tailgate that’s height adjustable, so if you’re on the shorter side or you have a smaller garage, you can set it to only open partway.

Safety

The Subaru Ascent Is a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+

The Subaru Ascent earned a 2026 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and that award carries over to the 2027 model. It received the top rating of “Good” in the small overlap front, updated moderate overlap front, and updated side crash tests.

Ascent Seat Belt Pretensioners in the Front and Second-Row Window Seats

The Ascent has seat belt pretensioners in the driver’s seat, the front passenger seat, and both second-row window seats. A pretensioner is a mechanism inside the seat belt that tightens it within milliseconds in a crash, which is different from the seat belt locking. This technology has been in front seats for decades, and manufacturers are finally putting it in the second row.

Subaru EyeSight Is Standard on Every Ascent Trim

Every Ascent comes standard with Subaru’s EyeSight driver assistance suite, which includes:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Keep Assist
Car Seat Setup

If you’re putting car seats in the Ascent, you are going to be incredibly limited, and for some of you, that could be a dealbreaker. It can work, but you have to be choosy, especially in the third row.

Lower Anchors and Top Tethers in the 2027 Ascent

  • Second-row captain’s chairs: lower anchors and a top tether in both seats
  • Second-row bench: the center seat uses shared lower anchors
  • Third row: one set of lower anchors shared between the middle seat and an outboard seat, plus a top tether in all three seats
  • Every seating position: a removable head restraint

The Ascent Second Row Needs a Compact Car Seat

Second-row legroom is really tight, so a compact car seat makes the biggest difference. Seats that work well include:

The Evenflo Revolve360 Slim will fit, but not great.

Three Across on the Ascent Bench Takes Narrow Seats

Three across is possible on the bench with narrow seats. We fit two Graco SlimFit3 LXs and a Chicco KeyFit Max infant seat.

How to Reach the Ascent Third Row with Car Seats Installed

The aisle between the captain’s chairs is narrow. The best third-row access is moving a second-row seat forward on its tracks, which works with a car seat installed with lower anchors only. A baseless infant seat like the Joie Mint behind the driver makes this easier, because you can take the infant seat out, move the second-row seat, and click it back in.

Ascent Third-Row Car Seats Need a Low Profile

The third-row bench is shallow, so choose a low-profile car seat to save legroom and watch for overhang. Put the car seat in the center seat of the third row so you don’t squish legs. The Graco Tranzitions is even lower profile than the SlimFit3 LX and works well here. Boosters are harder because they’re wider and kids need to reach the buckle, so look for a narrow booster like the Peg Perego Viaggio Flex 120.

Car Seat Setups We Tested in the Ascent

Three across (second-row bench):

  • Two Graco SlimFit3 LXs and one Chicco KeyFit Max infant seat

Three car seats, not across (captain’s chairs):

  • Second row, passenger side: Graco Extend2Fit 3-in-1 or Britax Poplar
  • Second row, driver side: Joie Mint, for easier third-row access
  • Third row, center: Graco Tranzitions

Is the 2027 Subaru Ascent Right for Your Family?

The setups above work, but just know we tried several car seats, and they were either too big or they didn’t fit back here. You also don’t have good third-row access.

If you don’t have a lot of car seats and you’re mostly going to use the second row, the Ascent gives you Subaru safety, it’s reliable, it’s all-wheel drive standard, and people just like Subaru.

But if you need the third row for car seats, I think there are a lot better car-seat-friendly vehicles. I was a lot more impressed with the versatility of the Hyundai Santa Fe, and the Kia Sorento is a very similar vehicle with a lot more workable, usable space. The Ascent is just small in the wrong places, and it doesn’t use its space very well.

This is our second Ascent! I was in the market for a new car (last ascent was well loved at 6+ years old with over 110k miles) and after looking at similar cars like the pilot I just kept coming back to the Ascent. Considering I drove one for 6 years and never got tired of it I knew it was what I’d be going with again. The safety tech is amazing and the quality of materials overall creates a sturdy feeling compared to the Honda specifically (and this is said as a family that also owns a Honda!)

I really enjoyed the drive of the car and everything felt very well made, nothing felt cheaply made. I bought this car before I had my third but realized after it didn’t fit 3 very comfortably. Three across the bench wise TIGHT. Very few combinations fit. The third row is a joke for an adult or a car seat and the trunk is tiny with the third row up. It is AWD and I loved the size for 2 kids, but any more than 2 is not a great fit.

I bought this car after my 04 Toyota Sienna had to many mechanical issues to fix. I always wanted a Subaru and with having 3 kids between the ages of 2&6 I needed a third row vehicle. The third row is a little hard to get to if you have car seats in both of the middle row seats but I don’t mind it because my kids will not be dependent on me to buckle them forever I put my 2 year old in the middle 2nd row seat behind the drivers seat and my 4 and 6 year old in the 3rd row so I do have to lean the 2nd row seat on the passenger side forward to buckle them and the far seat on the drivers side in the 3rd row is a bit smaller than the seat on the drivers side in the 3rd row which makes buckling the car seat a little harder but again that won’t last forever so it wasn’t a deal breaker for me. Trunk space is decent I cannot fit my wagon stroller in it with the third row up but fits lots of grocery’s and has a good storage compartment in the trunk I use for lawn chairs, a few kids toys, etc. overall I think the ascent is a great family car I know it’s been great for my family of 5!

We love our Ascent - it looks great, gets excellent gas mileage for a third-row SUV, and is thoughtfully designed on the interior (waterproof/stainproof seats, lots of cupholders, well-designed screen). Its only downside is the small third row and trunk - it feels very tight now that we have three kids. I would highly recommend the bench so you can get more trunk space.

This car has been perfect for me. Sunshades, third row, ceiling vents, and very spacious. Easily fits strollers, Costco, you name it. Plus we live somewhere that gets very snowy and it’s been great in the snow. Not the coolest car or cutest but I think it looks fine. Especially for the better price point than most third row vehicles

Love the ascent! It’s been a perfect people mover and easy to get car seats in and out of as well as comfortably seats adults in the back when we carpool with friends. Trunk space is fantastic as well as infotainment. Points deducted slightly for the third row being a little hard to get into and sit for full grown adults. Would be perfectly fine for kids/teens.

We bought our 2020 Ascent new from the dealership and it has been a great car for us! We have had a couple little things go wrong here and there - window control, squeaky brakes - but overall it’s been a great car with two kids plus the occasional grandparent or friend. I’m 5’7” and can sit in the 3rd row pretty comfortably and with the third row down it’s super roomy! My husband primarily drives this car and I drive out 2018 Toyota Highlander and the Ascent is definitely bigger and better equipped for kids with top tether anchors on every seat!

I downsized from the suburban- just needed a break and smaller vehicle! Love Suzie - feel like I get so much more done in a day running errands. The cups holder sell is a little out there. Sure there are lots but they could be more intentional and bigger. Kids fit great - wish we would have gone with the limited model for the sunroom but I didn’t like the style of wheels. She is extremely proud of her safety features - is not happy until EVERYONE is buckled & she knows…and if I get close to that curb or center line she’ll get fired up too. We love her for the time being - black interior is not my fave but couldn’t find tan and was in a hurry to get the Subaru financing 0.9% that ended 07/31/2026 - the day we got her!

We love our Subaru Ascent! We are a family of 5 (4 years, 2 years and 11 months) and live in MN. We love the safety ratings and how well it handles in the snow. It has all the features we need and we have figured out a nice layout for 3 young kids. We use Nuna car seats and have the Rava (4 year old), Revv (2 year old) and Pipa (11 month old). We have the 4 year old and 2 year old in the back and then the baby in the middle. The rotating car seat makes this really easy for our 2 year old! We have one bucket seat often folded down but I am able to sit in the back if need which is very convenient. The trunk is quite small but we are able to fit out UPPAbaby Vista V2 in the truck with all the additions (rumble seat, ride along napes, etc). We sometimes think our life would be easier with a van or something similar but we have made it work with our kids and plan to keep it for years to come! The main cons are the small truck and doors that swing vs. slide.

Nothing impressive about the car. Exterior styling is not very good, too much black plastic. There’s enough technology for everything you need. Second row has good room and has ceiling vents but third row is a little tight. Not much storage in the trunk once the third row is up. In all honesty I don’t have anything super bad to say about the car but also not super obsessed/any super crazy good qualities. Get me and the family from A-B and I never have to worry.

I have the Ascent Onyx and really love it\. The visibility is probably one of my favorite things about it\. There are basically no blind spots, which makes driving and changing lanes so much easier\. It’s also really comfortable to drive and handles very well\. I had a Subaru Outback before this, and honestly, I think my Ascent handles better than my Outback did\. My only real complaint is the cup holders\. There are apparently 19 of them 😂, but I wish they were actually big enough to fit larger water bottles\. The size of the cup holders is probably my least favorite thing about the car\. Overall, though, I’m really happy with my Ascent!

I purchased this car brand new 5.5 years ago, and for two kids, it has been a great car. I have the Touring trim level, which has captains chairs, which I was looking for, since I only have 2 kids. Third row access is not the best in this vehicle with car seats, but mine is usually down, which provides great trunk space. The trunk is small if the third row is up. I appreciate the heated and ventilated seats, heated steering wheel, moon roof, and camera/sensors. The seats are very comfortable. There are definitely cars with more sophisticated tech, but this one has everything that I need/want. More importantly, I have not needed to have any work done to the vehicle, besides general maintenance. I generally drive my cars for over 10 years, so reliability is most important to me. It does great in the snow.

I love the size and maneuverability of this car - it’s very easy to drive. I like that I can fit 3 across the second row bench and that there are options for tethers on all second row seats. I feel the safety and reliability are excellent. I was in need of four wheel drive and I think I get the whole package with the Ascent - looks, reliability, safety, and comfort.

I LOVE the safety aspect of this vehicle. I feel safe when driving my child around. I am also a big fan of the all wheel drive. I have never been stuck in the snow or the ice with this vehicle and where we live, we get a lot! The hidden trunk compartment is a plus. We always have the third row down and love how big that makes the trunk space. It is a comfortable ride but the technology is dated compared to current vehicles.

I bought the limited trim of this car and as a mom of 2 older kids, car seats aren’t a factor for me. I loved the outside, the heated seats and steering wheel, the comfort, space, technology, ceiling vents, etc. but I can’t wait to trade it because the gas mileage is HORRIBLE! I’m getting 8-9 mpg city (yes, you read that right) and about 20 highway on a good day. There are so many good things about this car but the gas mileage has totally ruined it for me with gas prices increasing every week. A Kia Telluride Hybrid is what I’m planning to trade for.

This car is just ok with car seats. We have middle row captains chairs and with two in car seats, the third row is virtually unusable. The gas tank is too small and I have to fill up at least once per week, usually twice. Also, after driving a Forester and Impreza for years, the gas mileage is disappointing.

We chose our Ascent because Subaru is one of the safest out there. With two little ones that’s so important to us. We love everything about it with only having two kids. The gas mileage was a big selling point. However, the third row is pretty tight. We personally don’t keep it up, but if it was..there just wouldn’t be much space. I can fit everything in the cargo area no issues. Stroller, bikes, groceries..all fit. I typically keep Apple car play on and really like it. The touch screen is large. The only downside of the touchscreen is climate control is all accessed through it. I would prefer buttons, but it wasn’t a deal breaker. All in all, love the car!

Before getting pregnant with our first child, my husband and I were excited to get a new family vehicle. We previously had a Toyota 4Runner that we absolutely loved and had zero problems with, but we knew we needed more space as our family grew. That’s what led us to the Subaru Ascent. We’ve had our Ascent for several years now, and overall, we’ve had very few issues with it. It runs great and gets a LOT of use, so that’s something I really appreciate. One of my favorite things about it is the practicality. We have the captain’s chairs, which have worked really well for our family, and there are air vents everywhere in the back—including vents in the ceiling—which is a huge plus with kids. There are also tons of cupholders and storage areas, which might seem like a small thing, but with kids, you quickly realize how important those little details are. I also love the brown leather interior. It gives the car a really nice feel without being overly fancy or complicated. The technology is another area where I think the Ascent gets the job done. It’s not the newest or most high-tech system out there, but it has everything we need, and I honestly don’t have any complaints. As our family potentially grows again, I will say that the space is starting to feel a little tighter. Three kids and all of the gear that comes with them could definitely be a challenge, but we’re not looking to get a new vehicle anytime soon. We really like our Ascent and plan to make it work. Overall, the Subaru Ascent has been a great vehicle for this phase of our life. It’s comfortable, practical, reliable for us, and has handled everything we’ve thrown at it. It may not be the fanciest SUV on the market, but for our family, it has been a really solid choice.

I have really loved my Subaru Ascent. I originally bought it for the safety & reliability of Subarus and it has been just that. For our lifestyle, my family has some what outgrown it. There is not alot of trunk space. The middle seat in the middle row is not comfortable for older kids, so we as a family of 5, with one in a carseat and one in a booster, have to utlize the 3rd row. The third row leg room is TIGHT. The seats in general are very narrow. Totally fine for driving around town, but my family finds the seats very uncomfortable on longer road trips.

Great family car for a family who rarely needs to use/get to the third room. We have a middle bench seat. My original plan was to be able to sit in the middle between two car seats or between a car seat and a booster…not really comfortable. Third row is tight, but not awful. I’ve ridden back there for 2 hour roadtrips and been okay. Car maneuvers very well in Pittsburgh, PA snow on large hills. Will probably buy the car at the end of my lease.

I really like this car, a total mom car for sure. I did get into a very minor car accident (without the kids), turning so not driving fast and my car is tank! On my car it was more like a scuff mark and the other car had a dent about 2 feet wide. Even though it was still an accident I felt so safe in my vehicle knowing my family would be safe in my Subaru Ascent.

We will forever be a Subaru family! Myself and my children were involved in a rollover accident in my previous Subaru ascent. We walked away from the accidents with only minor bumps and bruises. The peace of mind it offers is worth more than any fancy design or tech options.

As a mom of two, I LOVE our Subaru Ascent. It's comfortable, it has plenty of space for us and what we need to bring on vacations. I love that it is AWD and comes with the roof rack since we do use a cargo carrier when camping or for extra long vacations. I think it looks nice and we have not had any issues! Love being apart of the Subaru family.

This car is the perfectly modest family vehicle, with many luxury features on the touring trim. It has the functionality needed for a small family (2-3 kids). The third row is small and should be treated as an occasional use third row or for a kid in a forward facing low profile car seat. The technology is the perfect balance of effective and safe - are the TV size screens really safe? The Ascent’s screen is big enough to have a nice display while still having manual buttons for key functions. It has well placed ceiling vents and sun shades. There are more than enough cupholders placed conveniently in each row. I appreciate the many storage nooks/shelves in the driver and passenger area. The heated/ventilated leather seats are comfortable. The ventilated seat is a bit loud, but I’ve noticed that one other vehicles as well. The Ascent feels like the only vehicle that has stuck with “simple luxury” and hasn’t gone overboard on unnecessary technology and electronic features. The safety ratings are also incredible. I have had zero issues with this vehicle after 4 years. My family has two rear facing car seats in the second row and there is plenty of space. My Uppababy Vista stroller fits in the truck with the third row up. I highly recommend this vehicle to anybody looking for a vehicle made with high end materials (leather seats, wood trim), but modest technology.

Love that it has ceiling vents. Technology is great. I have captains chairs and I wish I would have gotten a bench because I have four kids so the extra seat would have been nice. Overall great car. Love that it isn't a beast to drive.

Our Ascent is the workhorse of our family that uses it as our single primary vehicle. We had to trial the best car seats when my kids were rear facing behind my 6’2” husband. Our Britax One4Life was quickly replaced by a Clek Fllo to give slightly more room in the second row. We have the captain’s chairs and I only regretted that choice for the period when my second born daughter was in her infant bucket seat. Now we love the captain’s seats. My kids are now both forward facing and I can easily get them both in the third row when needed and have adults in the second row; 4 adults and 2 kids fits so well in the car. We really only need the trunk when it’s just our family of four so trunk space is rarely an issue for us. We did have an extremely small Yoyo stroller so it fit even with the third row up without issue. We do a lot of outdoor activities and can throw in most gear without issues. It has been a great value for the AWD/winter pkg. For most camping trips we do use a car topper for extra space which works well for temp needs to flex on space. We also go in to a city often on the weekends and have few issues parking in small spaces and streets spots. A larger vehicle would not work for us. I love that I can see out of the windows easily in all directions (this is was one of the biggest reasons why we chose this car over others we test drove). I love that I can fit my banister and our collective 4 kids with all the gear for a full day outing starting when we have two forward facing and still 2 rear facing kiddos. The only thing I hate is the exterior color but because we take through brush and trees I have also not cared about small scratches and dents as much. At the time of purchase it was the only option without a long wait or drive with the other specs we wanted. The black fabric interior has held up well and with our kids would still looks as good as the day we bought it. All in all I’d absolutely recommend for a family who only sometimes needs a third row.

I do like this car. I honestly got it because I had a Forester before this so I just upgraded size to the Ascent. I do not love the gas milage. Great for when family is in town and I can move the kids to the back seat. But I cannot put booster seats with latches, you're unable to use the latches and use the seatbelt. So I had to get boosters that do not have latches. Overall wish I would have shopped other brands not just Subaru when getting this car.

I love my Subaru ascent for safety. It was fine with 3 kids. Having our 4th kid made this car pretty difficult. With the third row up all the time with two booster seats in it, the trunk is really small. I can barely squeeze my stroller in. I had a target order the other day that included a big package of paper towels and had to put almost everything else in my front passenger seat, or in the floor on the back and I still had to go to the grocery store! The technology is glitchy. My apple car play doesn’t work half of the time no matter what cord I plug it in with. The kids in the third row do not have a ton of leg room and there is only one latch anchor which is finicky because it interferes with the buckle.

I’m in south Texas where it is summer forever, so ceiling vents in the second and third row were a MUST! Love the ease of getting in and out of the car with the captain’s chairs. The height is perfect for loading kids in car seats too. It’s a mini van height without being a mini van. I keep the third row folded down almost all the time, so the space in the back is amazing. The technology in the car is great! I love the big display screen and the Apple car play is so easy to use-I never want to be without it! The small third row works for us right now because if we have extra people I can put my 5 year old in a booster in the back, but once he is older that will not work. The seats are very narrow and the leg room is tight. I plan to keep this car for about another 5 years ideally, then will likely upgrade to something that can accommodate two growing boys a little better!

We've had this car for almost 5 years. We have the captain chair set up with 3 kids/3 car seat set up, 2 rear-facing, 1 forward-facing. Our oldest (7 yrs) is forward-facing and he can buckle himself in the third row so we can just tighten him. We have both our 1 and 4 year old in a 360 car seat so we have the flexibility for our oldest to reach the 3rd row but we could get by with just one. Cons - The third row leg space is practically non-existent. Also the third row middle seat is very narrow. Our oldest forward-facing car seat is off to one side which works for us to be able to tighten from the outside of the car without needing to crawl in. Second, the captain chair seat belts are attached to the side of the car. So moving the seat for better access is not an option which is why for our 3 child set up, a 360 car seat makes it most accessible. Trunk space with the back row up is on the small side but it still functions fine daily. For trips we have an overhead cargo to fit much of our luggage and strollers so it makes it a great option. Pros - We love the safety and reliability of Subaru. This is a huge factor for us in sticking with it. Gas mileage is average but we absolutely love the all-wheel-drive capability with our winter season needs. Put some winter tires on and this car drives amazing in tough snow conditions. It has overhead air vents in the second and third row which is another huge plus. Ultimately with some modifications we've made as a family of 5, this car has served us very well and I would recommend to others!

The Subaru Ascent is great in so many ways. Plenty of second row space, plenty of trunk space with the 3rd row down, PHENOMENAL in the snow (WNY driver here). It gets a lot of flak for its infotainment but I don't see any shortcomings with it and like it a lot!

We loved our 2020 Subaru Ascent when we had two kids. With captain’s chairs, it was the perfect amount of space for our family. We could keep the third row folded down most of the time for a large, useful cargo area, and the kids in the second row had plenty of room. Once we had our third baby, though, the layout became much more frustrating. The biggest issue was putting my oldest in the third row with a booster. With car seats installed in the second row, the seats needed to be pushed fairly far back, which left very little legroom for the child in the third row (according the the manual). A high-back booster also required the third-row seatback to be inclined, which wasn't particularly comfortable or practical. The third row is doable for kids, but I wouldn't call it ideal, especially once you're dealing with boosters. My oldest also didn't like the headrest/seat position when we eventually switched to a backless booster. We also had some mechanical issues with our Ascent. We needed a transmission replacement at around 40,000 miles, along with a battery replacement and several recalls. That said, Subaru was excellent to work with and was very helpful throughout those issues, which I really appreciated. If we had stayed a two-child family, I probably would have kept the Ascent much longer. It was paid off, and for two kids it really was a great family vehicle. We ultimately moved on because we needed more room and, more importantly, more comfort and usable space for all three kids.

We owned our Subaru ascent for six years and had almost no problems with it. It was so reliable, drove like a champ through snow and ice and was really comfortable for our family of 5. Ultimately we wanted something even bigger and “cooler” looking so we sold it, but I still feel like it was such a great car and such a good value and I highly recommend. One thing I would change is that we had the captains chairs and I would have gotten the bench.

This was ALMOST my car! I loved the Ascent. It comes in green (more cars need to come in green!). I like the exterior and the interior is comfortable. It drives well and the turn radius is amazing! Why we didn't get it came down to 2 factors: the trunk space is just a bit smaller than other 3-row SUVs and I didn't want that to be a regret. And the price was actually a bit more than the Honda Pilot we purchased. I also didn't love the vertical screen, but I know I would have gotten used to it.

Fantastic for a mom of 2! We keep the third row down and the trunk space is excellent. I can sit between the two car seats on the 2nd row bench but it would be a tight squeeze for the hubs! Car play connectivity can be iffy, but seats are comfy. Limited trim with heated steering wheel, and heated 2nd row seats(that we’ll utilize someday when we’re done with car seats 🫣). Drives like a dream, has enough pep for my lead foot, and the tight turn radius is clutch. Had to replace the front struts (under warranty) around 3k miles, but no other major issues after 5years/60k miles. Would buy again!!!!!

We loved the reliability of our Ascent Onyx addition. We owned the can for 5 years without any issues. We would have kept the car for longer, but it was totaled in a hit and run. The car kept everyone safe and uninjured in the accident. The seats were super easy to keep clean with two toddlers. The car isn’t the most spacious for three kids but works great for two. The technology and drivability are great. Love the all wheel drive.

I have a touring edition (turbo engine and captains chairs) with two kids (2 and 3mon) who are both RF. I love the car as our daily driver. The safety features are great, it drives well, has pep, very comfy, the rear vents are amazing, and the car seats fit well (RF nuna rava and clek liing) with a tall husband (6’2”). We’ve had it for two years and had zero issues. The trunk space is also amazing with the third row down. Now the third row is a bummer. With both car seats installed, it’s essentially useless. It will be easier and have better space when we move my oldest FF, but at least for the next couple of years we won’t be able to use it, which is an unfortunate. When we have, it’s been a very tight fit for an adult because of second row leg room needs. The trunk space with the third row up isn’t great either, but still fit my uppababy minu and a few bags. Overall for a fam of four with car seats or a family with no car seats, it’s a fantastic car!

With an 11 year old and almost 3 year old, we were looking for something with captain’s seats in the middle for added comfort. My toddler is still rear-facing and has ample space with a Graco slimfit convertible seat. The front passenger space is a bit limited with a RF car seat, but still a comfortable ride for 6 ft and under. I love the ceiling vents in the back, leather seats, and technology available all on the lower trim option. I also put high value on the IIHS top safety pick. This was the most affordable option for us that offered all of our must-haves. My downside is the gas mileage. I’m sure there are better options out there with a hybrid model. Overall, if you don’t have car seats in the third row, this is a great option! We have loved this car.

Works great for my two kids, 4 and 6, currently! I have the bench seat so I could sit in the middle when the kids were babies, which I loved to have as an option on longer drives. We will see how it does with three kids coming soon, but planning to make it work since the car is almost paid off. Once our third arrives, my two oldest will take the bus to/from school everyday so we really won’t need it for everyday use now. Just weekends when we’re all together. I love Subaru’s customer service- we’ve had really great experience between this car and my husband’s crosstrek. People don’t love the look of it but it’s got the signature Subaru look, which I love. I have white ext/beige interior and it’s the perfect modern color to balance the outdoorsy exterior. Picture shows my husband asleep in the bench seat with two car seats. Definitely tight but was a life saver on car trips to entertain the kids.

Has been a very reliable car. Appreciate the safety features and safety rating. Trunk space is smaller with the third row up. Have done rear facing, forward facing and booster seats. Would for a tall driver had to put rear facing seat behind passenger and it can get tight. Like have captains chairs for third row access with two seats installed. Third row is tight for grown adult.

The Ascent with second row bucket seats is amazing if you haul older kids, adults or only need two to three car seat/ booster seats. The gas mileage is amazing and it drives smoothly. The moonroof and other details are great at the price point. I love this car!

When we bought the car in 2022, this was one of the most affordable car in its class. Other cars we were looking at were the Chevrolet Traverse and the Hyundai Palisade. The Ascent is one of the smaller ones in its class but to us, the higher price of the others did not equal the amount of space we would gain. Reliability and affordability were our top priorities. The Ascent has served us well.

The Ascent has been a positive ownership experience. I have had zero mechanical issues with it since buying new 5 years ago. I like the size because it does not feel too large to drive (and park!!) but still plenty of room for both my kids and all their stuff. Sure it's not the sexiest car on the road, but the price point was good. Visually I actually like the interior a lot. The space in the driver's seat is enough for me and I'm tall (like Kelly!). The steering wheel is comfortable and the button are intuitive. I had always heard about Subaru Safety, but I've now seen first hand from other Ascent owners that drivers and passengers have walked away from some very serious accidents. It's got all the great features like lane assist, adaptive cruise control, and a collision monitoring system (whatever that is called - it beeps at you if you're approaching something too fast). Couple downsides... gas mileage is just ok. The factory tires that come on it are pretty low grade so I had to replace those around 35K miles. I have the captain's chairs. Both my kids' carseats are on the captain's chairs and they've never sat in the third row so I can't comment on carseat set up there. 4yo is in FF 5 point harness, 6yo is in a high back booster. Edit to add: ceiling vents!!

I drive a Subaru outback and we have considered upgrading to an ascent. I got the opportunity to borrow one from the dealership while my outback got some work done and really enjoyed it. I have 3 kids in 5point harness seats, one rear facing in a graco slimfit lx3, one forward facing in a graco slimfit lx3, and one forward facing in a graco tranzitions 3in1 harness booster. My 2 forward facing kids sat in the 3rd row and my rear facing guy sat in a captain’s chair in the 2nd row. I liked that the car had sunshades and ceiling air vents. I would fold the other captain chair down to let my big kids in and out, and if you didn’t put it back upright and locked it would slide back and forth while driving- which scared us all the first time it happened. The trunk space was decent, I got a good Sam’s Club haul to fit. But we would have to invest in some sort of cargo storage for road trips. We love the tech, safety features and reliability of a Subaru so the ascent checks a lot of those same boxes!

I know this car is not a Kelly favorite, but it has served my family of 2 to then 3 kiddos well. Safety was a big factor for selection as well as value. Many manufacturers required you to have features you didn’t want in order to gain features you did. (Ex. In order to get heated steering wheel - you had to have X package that gave you dvd player - that you didn’t want. Subaru allowed us to pick and choose and brought us to a price point that made sense for the features we wanted. We have done 3-across without problem as well as my oldest now sits in the back and gets in and out from the trunk. Would love a car seat tilt and updated tech, but in 2020 - the tech wasn’t that out of date compared to the rest of the mod-size vehicles in a similar price point. One thing Subaru could work on with newer year models.

I absolutely love my Subaru Ascent. The standard AWD, heated and ventilated front seats, and ceiling vents are some of my favorite features. Third row is not the most spacious but it absolutely works for my kids. The cargo space looks small, but we always seem to fit way more in my Ascent than in my husband’s Tahoe. The performance in snow/ice is great. I have driven it for 12-14 hour road trips and was comfortable!

I LOVE my Ascent. We bought it new after taking a long road trip and realizing we needed a car with ceiling vents in the back seats. At the time, we had a 2016 Forester, but I had my eye on the Ascent for a while. If you’re thinking about upgrading, DO IT! I will say, we rarely use the third row for actual seats - most of the time it is down (we love the extra cargo space). We do use the third row (for it’s intended purpose) probably once a month - having both my son and his cousin in high-back boosters in the third row while my two-year-old is rear-facing in the second row. This set-up works well, but getting them in the back can be a hassle (we have a second row bench, rather than captain chairs). I wouldn’t recommend this car if you are transporting more than two kids consistently. As for other warnings of the car: - You can’t use cruise control if the “eyesight” feature is turned off. So if the car thinks the sun is too bright, you can’t use cruise control. Usually it only lasts a couple minutes, but sometimes it randomly turns off in the middle of a highway. -Cupholders are plentiful, but small. -THE BIGGEST QUALM: The windshield cracked twice in the first two years we had the car. (Both were due to rocks hitting it, but supposedly the newer Subarus are especially susceptible to windshield cracking) There was a class-action lawsuit with Subaru for this exact reason. All in all, we LOVE this car. We considered upgrading this year (our local dealer needed used cars, so they tried to talk us into a new one). Unfortunately for them, our car is paid off and we absolutely HATED the new dashboard of the 2026 Ascents - it is extremely slow due to it being fully digitalized. We will stick with our dream car!

I love my Ascent. When we bought it we only had 2 kids in car seats and it was perfect. The trunk is huge with the 3rd row down, and we always had the option to carpool easily. Once we had our 3rd baby things got a little more tricky. Our oldest rides in the third row (yes, still in a car seat) which makes the trunk space minimal. The 3rd row is also tight to be used daily. But, I love the front camera, high safety ratings, and reliability of the car so much we aren’t in a rush to upgrade to a larger car until it is completely necessary. The car has over 100K miles on it and hasn’t had a single issue. Just routine maintenance. I highly recommend this car to anyone with 2 or less kids. I wouldn’t recommend this car if you’re planning to use the 3rd row daily.

I drove an Ascent with 3 kids in car seats. The oldest was in the 3rd row since she could buckle herself in and the younger two were in the 2nd row. Leg room in the 3rd row isn’t great for adults. It’s pretty tight for kids too. If you have 2 kids, this is a great car! There’s enough space for everyone plus your groceries. With the 3rd row up, the trunk space is TIGHT. Think the width of a standard Bogg bag. That’s about how deep the trunk is and it’s not practical with over 2 kids. Tech wise, the Subaru needs an upgrade bad. The infotainment looks like a toddler phone toy and honestly doesn’t fit with the rest of the car. I drove a Touring which is the highest trim level. It had heated/ ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, front camera, and heated 2nd row! Great amenities! I needed an upgrade and more space with 3 kids. I would suggest this car to moms with 1-2 kids. Great prices, safe and reliable. 3+ kids, this car gets tight real quick.

I love my 2022 Acsent. I originally found this car while reviewing Kelly’s youtube in 2021. I purchased a 2019 as my first Subaru but the transmission issues lead me to upgrade. My 2022 is very similar but drives smoother and has a front view camera. I purposely chose the 2022 because I wanted physical buttons for my AC and radio(2023 is a full screen) my favorite part is the rear ceiling vents. The built in sunshades are great too. I personally love the captains chairs, it makes it easy to change diapers in the back or my toddler can use the potty. I do use a cargo cover with the third row down for my stroller(Nuna Mixx)and diaper bag. I use a cargo net in the middle of the captains chairs to prevent things from sliding into the second row. I have a Cybex Callisto g 360, my main complaint is the passenger seat has to be at a 90° angle for the seat to fit probably but that could be fixed with a smaller seat. Overall I think it’s a good looking car and I think it’s a great size for one kid. We do use a thule cargo box for traveling. There is not much room with the 3rd row up but I can fit a Nuna trvl easily and a few bags.

Car works great for two kids. I do have three though, ages 3, 5 and 7 and it’s functioning fine for us but I do wish there was a car seat tilt for better third row access. The trunk space is descent for a mid size car. We also have a dog so road trips require a roof topper for storage. The outside appearance is not as sleek or stylish as some of the other SUVs in my opinion. A major pro is that it has been extremely reliable (knock on wood). I’ve had no mechanical issues what so ever which is a huge! I have captains chairs, next time I would definitely want a bench in the second row that could accommodate all three of my kids. It has served me really well but if I was in the market, I will not likely repurchase just purely based on looks and some functional aspects of the interior.

I like this car a lot. I wish I could say I love it, but it’s just a hair away from truly great. The panoramic sunroof is a dream. The sound system is great. It’s easy to travel in and has decent legroom. I wish the technology was better. I hate the big screen and frequently can’t easily locate the button or function I want without taking my eyes off the road. She’s also a big boss and she drives like it. She’s heavy in a turn and can take a hard break to stop, especially coming down an incline. She’s a car line boss - and I would know because I spend hours in carlines every week. The seats are comfortable, the cargo space is great with the third row down, which is how I typically leave them. However, it’s very easy to throw up the third row for my big kids friends when they need a ride. Overall, it’s a great car. I like driving it. I just don’t love it as much as I wish I did.

Our family loves our Subaru! We love the spacious cabin, durable cloth seats, and the safety tech gives me peace of mind driving this around town. Wish we had opted for a bench seat though, but the captains chairs are fine. Also love our 2022 because it was the last model year with a CD PLAYER so you know I've got the millennial mixed CDs on repeat in my car (sorry kiddos).

This car is great for 1-2 kids, but I would not recommend if you are planning on having more or want to be able to help with pickup and drop off for other people at all. I have the bench seats and almost always keep the 3rd row down so there is lots of trunk space. The second row seat in the middle is quite small and I have not been able to find a 3 across option for car seats that works. An adult can technically squeeze between the two seats but it’s a tight fit and not comfortable at all. With the third row up, things feel tight all around. The trunk is small and it’s hard to fit additional car seats in the third row. Accessibility is also really tricky with car seats in the 2nd and 3rd row.

We purchased this car during Covid and were excited for it at the time and even for the first few years. However even the dealership has admitted the issues and flops Subaru had with the 2020 Ascent. I have had repeat issues that have had to be escalated to Subaru HQ to have approval to cover the repairs. The car space works well for our family and I love the color we chose (brown). Wishing the performance was better. That said we have over 102k miles on it and it’s still kicking!

The ascent has been very good to us! We have had no issues so far and have driven 80k miles over the last 6 years. We bought this car back in 2020 when they offered 0% financing when our first child was 6 months old. It was very comfortable for us the first 5 years but as our family has grown it has become more tight. Since we have added our third it has been more challenging to drop my son off at school since we have the captain chairs. If I could go back, I’d strongly recommend getting the bench seat if you plan on having more than 2 kids. We have our 8 month old in Joie mint latch, 2 year old in the Chicco 360 and 6 year old (53 inches tall) in a graco turbobooster in the back. Trunk can still hold a compact travel stroller or double and a decent amount of groceries!

We test drove this car. It felt compact but long. The second row felt spacious but the third row felt so small. It also didn’t have remote start which was a deal breaker for us. I felt like it just wasn’t practical for us since it had the captains chairs in the second row and not much third row space. It drive very smoothly though and being all wheel drive was so awesome.

I know this car gets some hate from Kelly, but I LOVE my Ascent. The safety tech for the price was so important to me and living in the Midwest, it has proven itself time and time again in the snow. It feels big enough but not huge, which is great for our every day driving needs but can also fit a grocery haul with no issues. Overall have been super happy with this car!

We test drove this one back in 2022 and actually bought it — to build. Put down the $500 deposit. We would have been fine in the ascent; however, it felt much smaller on the inside vs the Atlas. I loved the safety features, how it drove, the reliability that is Subaru, and know it’s a great car. Did not like that for the money, the Atlas we looked at felt so much larger and wasn’t too much of a price difference. I think a Subaru loyalist with 2 kids would be perfect for this car. I would not recommend to a mom or family with three small children, but it would absolutely work.

Pros: reliable, AWD as standard, ceiling vents, sun shades, door cupholders, and great trunk space with third row down. Cons: poor suburban gas mileage, bad storage/cupholder situation for driver and most passengers, lacking tech when compared with others in its class, and poor legroom in 3rd row as well as most seats with car seats installed. My husband is 6’3’’ and hits the RF car seat behind him when driving. If the RF car seat is on the passenger side, the front passenger seat needs to be pretty far forward making that passenger uncomfortable (and I’m only 5’5’’). Overall: we chose the Ascent because we loved our Outback and wanted more space for two kids in car seats. We have loved our Subarus and appreciate the reliability, but the lack of space and other features we’d gain if we went with another midsize SUV make us count the days until we are ready to get a different car.

Love my Subaru ascent! She’s been great for 6+ years. Has all the technology and safety features you could want. It’s a very functional car for our 5 person family. We currently have 2 boosters and a rear facing seat. Our ascent also has captain seats, which we prefer. When we’re traveling, we use a car topper as the trunk space isn’t enough when the third row is partially up. We also have a large dog who needs space too. We are in the market for a full size SUV as our kids are growing bigger, but the ascent has been the perfect midsize for our family so far! I honestly feel like it’s underrated!!!

When we first bought our Subaru Ascent we had one child and thought it would be great for future kids as it had a third row. Now with three very young children I wish we had gotten captain seats instead of a bench row in the second row. The third row is not as roomy and it can be hard for my oldest to hear me from the third row. There’s definitely not enough room to comfortably and safely fit three across in the second row either. It’s really difficult to get my three-nager in his car seat in the third row as well. I love this car for a plethora of other reasons. It drives great, feels safe, ample trunk space (even with the third row up I can always fit all my groceries), and has a great look! We also have two big dogs who love the back with the third row down. It’s perfect for living in colder climates. I would recommend this car for a mom with 1-2 very young kids, maybe up to 3 or 4 if your kids are more spaced out in age than mine and already in boosters.
