Features We Love

The Volkswagen Atlas received a refresh in 2024. No major changes for the 2026 model.

  • Best in Class Carseat Capability: The second row is extremely car seat friendly. There are three sets of lower anchors across the bench and tether anchors on all five rear seats. The car-seat-friendly tilt feature is a game changer because you can access the third row without uninstalling a car seat
  • Comfortable Third Row & Cargo: The third row is surprisingly usable for a midsize SUV. I had actual legroom back there, and it comes with side vents, cup holders, and lighting. Even with the third row up, you still get about 18 cubic feet of cargo space, which is enough to fit a full-size stroller plus a little extra.
  • Big, Spacious SUV in the Mid-Size Class: The Atlas is one of the largest mid-size SUVs on the market, great for families who want more space without jumping to full-size or a minivan.

Car Mom Review

The Exterior

For 2026, the Atlas gets:

  • A full front light bar
  • A matching rear light bar
  • An available illuminated Volkswagen logo (on higher trims)

At night, that glowing VW badge looks incredible. I’ve seen it on the highway, and it definitely elevates the presence of the vehicle.

The side profile remains largely the same — still boxy, still athletic, still one of the largest midsize SUVs in its class. A few new color and wheel combinations freshen things up, but the overall stance is familiar.

The rear light bar is a bit controversial. It’s bold. It’s modern. It might take some getting used to. I’m mixed on it, but it’s absolutely in line with current design trends.

First Row

The cabin feels refined. The materials feel premium, the stitching looks elevated, and everything just feels thoughtful.

The 12-inch floating infotainment screen is really the centerpiece of the cabin. It looks clean and modern and immediately makes the cockpit feel more elevated. Six USB-C ports, with up to eight available. Almost all of those USB-C ports offer 45-watt fast charging, so your devices actually charge quickly.

One of my favorite additions? Heated and ventilated front seats are now standard across the Atlas lineup. That’s a huge win and not something many manufacturers include without pushing you up a trim level.

On higher trims, you’ll also find:

  • Heads-up display
  • Customizable ambient lighting (every color of the rainbow)
  • Panoramic sunroof

The ambient lighting package is genuinely fun. It runs through the dash and doors and adds a level of personality the Atlas was missing before.

And can we talk about cup holders? Volkswagen absolutely understands American cup culture. You can fit a Stanley in the door cubby. That alone deserves applause.

Second Row

Second Row: Car Seat Dream

The Atlas is  one of the most car-seat-friendly SUVs on the market.

You can choose between:

  • Bench seat (7 passengers)
  • Captain’s chairs (6 passengers)

And here’s the best part: the bench seat is incredible.

Why the Atlas Bench is So Good:

  • Three sets of lower anchors
  • Three tether anchors
  • Wide seating surface
  • Excellent three-across capability

It is absolutely a three-across machine. Whether you’re using slim convertible seats, boosters, or a combination, the Atlas accommodates growing families incredibly well.

One continued miss? No ceiling vents in the second row. The vents are on the back of the center console, which isn’t ideal for rear-facing kids. It’s not a deal breaker, but I would love to see that addressed.

Built-in sunshades, heated second-row seats (on higher trims), and USB-C ports round out the comfort features.

Car-Seat-Friendly Tilt: Still a Game Changer

One of my favorite features in the Atlas is the car seat tilt!

If your car seat is installed using lower anchors, the entire seat tilts and slides forward without uninstalling the car seat — giving you third-row access.

That’s huge for real-life families.

Even with three-across installed, you can still access the third row. Not many midsize SUVs can say that.

Third Row

Third Row: Wide & Deep

The third row offers two seats only and honestly, I prefer it that way.

Instead of cramming three shallow seats back there, Volkswagen gives you:

  • Two wide, deep seating positions
  • Tether anchors in both seats
  • Better-positioned vents than the second row
  • USB-C ports

The deep bench makes car seat installation easier back there because you don’t have to worry about overhang. The tradeoff? A little less legroom when the second row is fully pushed back. But because the second row slides, you can adjust as needed.

No items found.

Trunk

Cargo Space: Taking Bronze

With the third row up, you get about 20.6 cubic feet of cargo space. This is about the same as the Kia Telluride and only falls short of the Chevy Traverse and GMC Acadia in the mid-size cateogry.

You can fit a double stroller (with some maneuvering), along with groceries and store extra items in the helpful side trunk cubbies (perfect for a gallon of milk or a watermelon!)

Seats fold flat easily — manual, quick, and simple. No waiting on slow power-fold mechanisms.

On higher trims, you’ll get a power tailgate.

Safety

The 2026 Atlas received a 5-Star overall safety rating from NHTSA and was an IIHS Top Safety Pick+.

For 2026, in addition to the first row, VW added pretensioners to the second-row outboard seating positions. I applaud VW for this safety improvement.  Pretensioners remove slack from the seat belt in the nanoseconds before a crash, dramatically reducing injury in frontal and near-frontal collisions. This feature has been standard in front seats for nearly two decades, but typically not in the back seats. While this doesn’t affect children in harnessed car seats, it does affect other passengers. Passengers in the second-row outboard seats can now benefit from this feature in the 2026 Atlas.

Safety Features

The Atlas offers a suite of standard safety features as part of IQ.DRIVE. These include:

  • Automatic Emergency Braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Travel Assist (lane centering and adaptive cruise control)
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Rear Traffic Alert
  • Emergency Assist (can slow/stop the car if the driver becomes unresponsive)
  • Stability Control
  • Exit Warning System
  • Park Distance Control (available)
  • 360 degree overhead camera (available)
  • Heads-Up display (available)

Car Seat Setup

Don't want a full-size SUV, but still need to fit 4–5 kids in car seats? The Atlas is the car that can fit everyone practically and comfortably.

Second Row Options & Car Seat Access

The second row offers either a bench seat or captain’s chairs, and both feature car-seat-friendly tilt. The Atlas bench is arguably the best midsize SUV to accommodate three-across setups.

Every seating position in the second and third rows has:

  • A removable head restraint
  • A top tether anchor

Every second-row seating position also has lower anchors. Lower anchors are notably missing from the third row. While they are not necessary for a safe car seat installation, they are helpful for booster seats. Many boosters offer lower anchor connectors to keep the seat secure when unoccupied. Otherwise, the booster seat should be buckled in with a seat belt to keep it from becoming a projectile in a crash.

Important Second Row Details

The second-row center lower anchors are unfortunately overlapped by the outboard behind-the-driver seat belt. That means if you want to use the center seat’s lower anchors, you cannot use the outboard driver’s seat belt at the same time.

Additionally, the space between the seat belt buckle for the center position and the buckle for the adjacent position is very small. This means most car seats are too wide to install in the middle seat without resting on the belt buckle, which can damage the buckle.

Refer to your owner’s manual for specific guidance, but you can contact VW for a buckle cover if you wish to install a larger car seat in the center position. The buckle cover renders the outboard passenger buckle useless.

Translation:

If you want to install the outboard seat with the seat belt (usually needed for three-across installs), your center car seat must be:

  • Very narrow
  • Installed using the seat belt

Enter the Graco SlimFit3 LX. While some other narrow car seats work here too, nothing is as versatile as this seat.

Best Car Seat Fits in the Second Row

The wide outboard seats can accommodate just about any car seat. There’s also plenty of legroom to fit large seats front-to-back.

If you plan to use both the second and third rows for passengers simultaneously, I recommend using a compact car seat in the second row to preserve third-row legroom.

Examples of compact seats include:

  • Graco Extend2Fit 3 in 1
  • Nuna Rava
  • Britax Poplar

Third Row Space & Access

The third row has two full-size seats and can comfortably fit:

  • Adults
  • Children in boosters
  • Children in car seats

Rear-facing seats fit, but they must be compact.

To access the third row, use the car-seat-tilt feature, which moves the seat up and forward without compromising a car seat installed with LATCH. Of course, this also works with no car seat installed.

A rotating car seat is a great option here so even a rear-facing seat can take advantage of car-seat tilt.

Car seats that rotate and have higher lower anchor weight limits in rear-facing mode include:

  • Evenflo Revolve360 Slim
  • Graco EasyTurn360

These seats are also compatible in a three-across configuration next to a narrow, low-profile, forward-facing car seat in the center, like the Graco SlimFit3 LX.

Car Seats That Are NOT Compatible

Any forward-facing harnessed seat or booster seat that:

  1. Requires a head restraint
  2. Does not permit a gap caused by a head restraint

This is less of a problem in the second row since the head restraints are relatively flush to the seat, particularly in the center position.

However, the third-row head restraints are extremely bulky when not removed for a car or booster seat installation.

Can You Use Lower Anchors & Seat Belt Together?

Another common question is whether the lower anchors and seat belt may be used together if the car seat permits it.

Yes — if the car seat permits using both lower anchors and the seat belt, VW also permits it.

At the time of this writing, the only car seats that permit this are:

  • Nuna Pipa
  • Clek Foonf (forward-facing)
  • babyark
  • Axkid One3

We are loving this car! Plenty of room to do 3 across and so much room for dog and luggage with the 3rd row down. It drives nicely and has surprisingly good gas mileage (better than advertised for us). For reference, I like how sturdy Fords feel and find Toyotas too sensitive and this lands somewhere in the middle; not too heavy, not too buttery. I miss nobs for volume and climate control, but for the price we got, I’ll adapt. We got the SE trim with a tech package and it is more than enough for a basic driver like me. The wireless Apple CarPlay is great and the VW system has been very intuitive (what User Manual?). The Adaptive Cruise Control is great, but if don’t use your turn signals consistently, it’s going to be annoying. It’s a must for long drives (1hr+) which I do about once a week. I have ridden in the 3rd with a car seat next to me and was comfortable enough to fall asleep (I’m 5’6”). I think we will need a less bulky car seat for my tall 3yo to sit in the 3rd row consistently, but he was fine for a 45min drive. 2nd row has GREAT legroom, is on rails for easy adjusting, has the car seat tilt, and 60/40 split: a car seat dream. With the 3rd row up/occupied, the trunk has room for a stroller or a wagon or Costco run. We picked this car over the CX90 because of the trunk space.

We bought this car with a bench seat when we found out we were pregnant with our first . It has been a GREAT car. We knew we wanted more kids and also have a large dog that needed a lot of trunk space. The Atlas has delivered on all fronts. VW is not known for its tech especially in 2018 but I know that buying the car. The tech is sufficient for what we need. The only real negative is the lack of ceiling vents for rear facing car seats. We did buy a NOGGLE and used it until all 3 were forward facing. Car seats we have had: 2 rear facing cybex Eternis S and one forward facing Eternis S. Forward facing in the middle seat. We currently have a Diono Everett High back booster and 2 Graco Slimfit3 LX all forward facing. Plenty of room for the booster to buckle but overall the Gracos are my least fav of the car seats we have had.

Love the space and how it drives. Recently had an issue needing a fuel pump injector/harness. Luckily, that was under warranty. My one complaint is the breaks making a grinding annoying noise occasionally, due to the material they use in their break pads. One other issue I’ve had is the gas flap door got stuck and I had to get it replaced because there is no emergency lever to manually open it. Other than that it’s been a great car over the last five years.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Atlas! It’s bougie on a budget. It gives a lot of storage, and space for adults in the backseat. My husband (6ft 2in) has comfortably sat in the third row. The trunk with the 3rd row up isn’t the largest trunk on the market for a midsize SUV but it’s manageable. I have still been able to fit a Sam’s run and a stroller. If I find myself where I need more space, I will place my small travel stroller in between my captains chairs. I have enjoyed the reliability and functionality of the atlas. The only downside is my wireless CarPlay crashes occasionally. It could just be my car though! #TeamAtlas

This car is made for tall people who don’t want to go with something as big as a full size SUV. My spouse is 6’5” and still can fit a rear facing car seat behind his seat.

I absolutely love my Atlas! I’ve only had it for about three months, but I can honestly say it’s my favorite vehicle I’ve ever owned. I love how much space it has and the way everything is laid out inside. It feels roomy without feeling like I’m driving a bus! I also love that it feels luxurious but still cool and sporty at the same time. And it’s just pretty! I still find myself looking back at it when I park. 😂 I had a VW Tiguan before my Atlas and put over 100,000 miles on it without a single problem, so I felt really good about sticking with Volkswagen. I loved my Tiguan, but I wanted more space, and the Atlas has been exactly what I was looking for. It’s comfortable, fun to drive, has plenty of room for everyone and all of our stuff, and still feels like a car I actually enjoy driving instead of just a practical family SUV. Three months in and I’m still obsessed with it!

So far this car checks all the boxes for our family! Roomy second (bench seat) and third row. Looks sharp. Only down side is that majority is touch screen no nobs or buttons so that takes some getting used to!

Overall, we’ve been really happy with our 2025 VW Atlas! The interior is spacious and comfortable, and it’s incredibly flexible when it comes to car seats, which is a huge plus with young kids. We have had a few issues with the infotainment system glitching, and I really wish it had ceiling vents for better airflow to the little ones in the back. Despite those few drawbacks, it’s been a great, comfortable family SUV for us.

I absolutely love my Atlas. It’s sporty and has a very smooth drive. The second row bench is very comfortable with lots of good amenities. Third row access is easy and the two seats back there are super comfortable. I can easily sit in the third row as a 5 ft 5 in adult. We are a family of 5 and travel often. The cargo space behind the third row is big enough for multiple suitcases and bags. One safety feature I love is the ability to lock and unlock individual and all doors from each of the four doors. It’s so convenient! The app is super helpful to be able to unlock and remote start from there. Highly recommend for families! Pic of my pup enjoying the bench seat! :)

This was my dream car - from the moment VW announced it I wanted it! The space inside was dreamy, and I loved the way she looked. However, we found ourselves disappointed for a few reasons. First of all, the seats are very hard and they were comfortable day to day, but we found ourselves in pain on long car trips. Next, we fell victim to a VW that shut off while driving -- they apparently had a fix for it, but we traded it before they announced this because we were terrified to drive it. The faux leather stains easily, and finally, it's *very* difficult to preform work on this vehicle yourself. If you or your spouse is someone who likes to work on vehicles, I would not recommend a VW!

We got this car before we had any kids but it’s been the best decision we ever made. We’ve been able to transport our daughter along with friends and their kids, our dogs, etc. No one has ever complained about being uncomfortable and in fact frequently says how surprised they are with the comfort. By far my favorite car I’ve ever owned.

We love this car for size (7 passenger), storage, comfort, and price range! We have 2 kids currently, but it will fit our growing family. The trunk storage is excellent. And we were able to get a <10k miles 2025 used one for under $35k. The only changes I’d make is no ceiling air vents in the 2nd row, and the infotainment technology screen, there is no “buttons” to easily press for let’s say climate or music volume controls. Just the screen. (We got the pure gray exterior and tan leather interior, but the avocado green pearl exterior is so pretty!)

I feel the Volkswagen atlas was extremely underwhelming. I had heard great things about it and was excited for the 3rd row. I traded my Jeep Grand Cherokee in for a brand new Altas and immediately regretted it. The legroom was decent and interior was nice BUT the car had absolutely no power. I felt like I was driving a sedan or a mini-van as opposed to a SUV. The engine struggled and made a whining noise when going up the smallest hill. It also had an issue with the steering column, more than once (took over a month for the parts because many atlas’ had this same issue). I’m not sure if I just had a lemon, but out of every vehicle I’ve owned this was/is my least favorite.

When we had our 3rd baby in 2021 we had to trade in our Volvo for more car seat room. I had been following your account and we chose a used Atlas based on your reviews and suggestion! I was literally at home nursing the baby and told my husband “go out and find an Atlas or else we can’t all ride together in one car!” He did just that and here we are with it 5 years later. :) On the hunt now for a used Armada now that our kids are “big.” Thanks for your great, relatable content!

This is such a great car. I toured lots of cars, and this was the biggest and most spacious midsize SUV. I am always surprised how big it is on the inside in comparison to some of the other cars in the same size. Some of the tech is a little average. For example, it’s got tire pressure sensors, but it won’t tell you what tire specifically is low. There is also a lot of beeping from the sensors around the car while driving. It likes to pick up on some of the painted lines on the ground and think it’s another car. But I would much rather it tell me there’s something there than not! My biggest complaint about the car is the brake noise. My brakes have been squeaking and making sounds since the first few weeks of having it. Going on five years, it’s still making the same noise. Apparently it’s the kind of brakes that they use and this noise is common. I was told moving to a ceramic brake will stop the noise. Also, because of the brakes that are on the car, they shake a lot when you brake on the highway. Overall, we absolutely love this car. It drives really well and is very comfortable. It’s got plenty of space for our family of four and still have plenty of trunk space. The third row is pretty comfortable and even has vents.

We just bought a 2026 Peak Edition and also own a 2018 SE with Tech! The upgrades in the 2026 are dreamy 😍😍. Thanks to Kelly I went into the car dealership coffee in hand and ready to go. I was torn between the Peak Edition and the SEL. They showed me the Peak first and I was in LOVE! Honestly I don’t know why they add all that wood paneling to the SEL. It’s giving 90s station wagon to me. We were fine without the heads up display and heated second row seats (we have two kids in car seats) and the lower price point was a bonus. The interior does feel smaller compared to the 2018 but still is perfection. My kids are both in forward facing car seats and have plenty of space! I love the extra cargo space under the center console. I also thought that moving from a shifter to a button was going to be a much bigger deal than it was!

I had a 2023 fresh bought off the lot brand spanking new atlas SEL black R Line. I LOVEEEDDD this car. In 2025 I started getting a light on my dashboard saying there was something wrong with the airbag. Then I got a notice recall in the mail. Took it in, they “fixed” it. Wash rinse repeat for FOUR MORE TIMES. I got the VW company involved. (This was in August, now September) they opened a “ticket” so the engineers in Germany at Volkswagen would tell them how to fix it because they had tried three other times and it did not work. So they ordered the same parts and obviously it didn’t work. 2 weeks later, same light came on. I was told this car was not safe to drive and to trade it in. I did so and was granted 7500 trade assist (which I’m told is rare to receive that much.) the VW dealership (mostly the GM, jacob) in cool springs TN worked his magic and got my a brand new 2026 atlas SEL premium R line. With the new 2027 coming out they were running a deal and I was able to get my car for 386$ a month (traded in my car plus the assistance they gave me and the price of my old car- which they gave me max they could on KBB(!!!) and they promised they wouldn’t sell the car because it was deemed unsafe. Basically if I was in a wreck the airbag wouldn’t go out because the car couldn’t sense if I was in the car or not (even when it was running). I LOVED my car- it was paid off- it was a LEMON (even though it was 2 yr old when it started having this issue). But the major VW worked to get me into a new safe car- y’all- I highly recommend it. Were they avoiding a law suit? Probably. But they gave me the most they could to get me in a new car that was safe. Atlas are extremely highly rated for safety. This was a rare occurrence. I highly recommend the ATLAS! Even with all my issues I had. :)

I truly love this car, there is so much space. The biggest downfall to this car is not having ceiling vents! With the captain chairs, it does allow air to flow pretty well, but that’s still something that can definitely be improved with! It tows our pop up camper and boat like a rockstar (pop up, as long as you don’t go about 65). We have never had any issues with it and it’s our main family vehicle. Would definitely recommend!

Atlas is a super comfortable, spacious car. We have a 1 year old baby and it works very nice for our growing family. We put a car seat in the middle of second row, and that allows to still have so much room on the second and third rows. We took the car on a long road trip and it performed perfectly. Definitely recommend.

Love my 21 Atlas! Bought brand new after watching The Car Mom’s review. At the time, I only had one kid, but now have two and it’s been great! Has plenty room in the second row. Very reliable and fits our family well!

This car has been a dream. It has seen us from car seats to teenagers and accommodated every stage. It would have been 5 stars across the board, but I deducted for lack of back/3rd row air vents. Otherwise, it is perfect. It still feels sporty with acceleration, turn radius, and a solid sound system (I have the base trim, too), but also feels big enough to comfortably fill er’ up! Children, adults, everyone fits comfortably with every seating combo we’ve tried. The trunk space with the 3rd row up is plenty, and generous with the 3rd row down. With standard maintenance we’ve had ZERO repairs/issues. We love our Atlas-highly recommend!

We love this car! We have 2 children (age 6 - high back booster & 18 months - rear facing convertible). There is so much room in this car. We usually have the 3rd row down but it provides good truck space when we put it up. We have taken this car on many road trips and have had zero issues.

I bought my VW Atlas the first year it was available in 2018 and I still have it 8 years later. I have been toting around the max amount of kids, with 2 booster seats in the 3rd row, and a booster and two rear facing in the 2nd row. I have also in the past been able to fit 3 forward facing car seats in the 2nd row! The seat tilt makes it super easy for the kids to get into the back. The trunk space allows me to fit a large double stroller and a couple fold up chairs at the same time. I LOVE THIS CAR!! I would 100% purchase this car again. I love the way the newer models look on the exterior, but the older ones (mine) still look very modern and not outdated. This car has been very reliable over the years, except for ONE issue. There was a problem with the 2018s (and maybe 2019s?) where the water pumps were cracking and the coolant would leak. This was a huge pain as the dealership said it would take months to fix at that time. I could not be without a car, so I paid to have it fixed elsewhere. That is my only complaint, but since it was fixed everything has been perfect. This is the perfect mom car for any families with anywhere from 1-5 kids that need to be in car seats!

It is truly the best! A big SUV for all things your family does, without the feeling of driving a bus! Even with the third row up, there’s usable and functional trunk space. The car seat tilt is next level and allows my kiddos to get in and out on their own easily; even in the carpool line! From family (of 5) vacations, sports practices and games, school carpool, and everything in between, there’s room for everything and everyone.

I loved the way the Atlas looked and how it functioned for car seats in the second row. We rarely used the third row so we had lots of trunk space. Unfortunately that’s all the positives I have for the Atlas. I hated the technology. It would ding all the time, the navigation never worked (it would say I was in Missouri when I was in Kentucky), the brakes were noisy. I was excited to trade it in this summer and don’t miss anything about it!

This has been my favorite car. When we bought this we had two kids and it had plenty of room. It’s been on vacations to Gulf Shores (13 hr. drive) and Gatlinburg (10 hr. drive) and the car drove well and everyone was comfortable. Que a surprise pregnancy in June of 2025. We now have a 7 month old in the mix. Our two oldest can squeeze in with the car seat in the second row, however, there isn’t much room left. We have been on several 2 hr road trips and everyone has been comfortable. Our middle is still in a booster so I’m not comfortable having her sit in the 3rd row and our oldest is a teen boy so he doesn’t fit well in the third row either. With the third row up we cannot fit the stroller into the trunk. So while we could use a SUV/van that offers a little more room now that we have three kids, we can still make that Atlas work for us for the time being until we are ready to upgrade.

I actually purchased my very first Atlas back when I first started following the car mom. She caught my attention on social media as she was currently driving an Atlas herself and I was in the market for a new car at the time. At that time I had a son who was a toddler and I had a newborn daughter and I was looking for a car that would grow with us. Even though I leased my car, I have at least two atlas so far and that has gotten me through five years of life with two kids. Current day, my son is almost 8 and my daughter just turned five and the car is still growing with us. Overall, I’m very happy with my Atlas and I do think that I will continue to leave. Alice is in the future. My only -2 the atlas is the third row. As my kids get older and we end up driving some of their peers. It is very hard to fit a booster seat in the third row of this car. However, my garage and land in general does not really accommodate a larger vehicle nor do I really feel the need to buy a larger vehicle just for the occasional trip with an additional child.

I LOVE my atlas. I have the bench seat SEL, it is a machine with kids. We can do three across with boosters and car seats in the second row if we need the full truck space, but the trunk space with the third row up is still great, plenty for soccer stuff, groceries or whatever daily activities you have. I do wish it had the camera in the rear view mirror when you have obstructed view and I wish the ambient lighting went into the third row but neither are deal breakers. I’d buy this car again a million times.

I love my atlas! In fact, this is my second one! The drive is smooth, 3 across on the bench fits easily with plenty of trunk space for 3 kids with the 3rd row down. Adults and kids can sit in the 3rd row quite comfortably! My only qualm is, as my kids have gotten older and seats must be installed with the belt rather than latch, I cannot utilize the seat tilt to access the 3rd row. This really affects how I view the car as we consider another child.

I watched the car mom reviews of every mid size SUV to find the one that best fit our family. I went with the atlas (r-line, black package) because it was roomier than most. Coming from a luxury vehicle, I found this car to be not quite as comfortable or quiet of a ride, but it definitely isn’t terrible, either. I love that the tech is up to date, I can use music streaming services right from my screen, no aux plug needed. I absolutely love the car seat tilt, making it easy for my teen to get into the back row. I also love the amount of cup holders, and if you’ve watched any car mom reviews, you know how a woman feels about her cup holders! There are a couple of things I really feel are missing on this model— air conditioned seats; I wish they’d come standard in 2023 like they are now. Ceiling vents for the 2nd row. The 3 row has them, so I don’t understand why the second row doesn’t. My rear facing child can’t get any air and he’s sweating in his car seat. Other than those two things, I really feel that this car is a great value for these times. It’s really a bonus that it’s also super cute and all the teenagers love it and make me feel like a cool mom driving it!

I have lived this car for the looks and size. I feel it drives sort of “clunky”. I also hate the infotainment- it’s glitchy. I also have the SEL Premium R Line (so all the bells and whistles) and again, it’s glitchy. It beeps at me every time I pull up to a stop light because it thinks the paint on the road lines is something I am too close to. So I’d recommend it based on size for a larger family if you’re not wanting a full size SUV, but be aware of its shortcomings.

TheCarMom videos and voting it family car of the year a bit ago rings true for so many considerations that serve our family well. Our family of 4 (2 kids) upgraded to carpool more, and knew we wanted to stay midsize SUV market for price, gas mileage, and not wanting to feel like driving a boat. Choose the bench everytime. Game changer. Second row comfortably fits three adults across so plenty of room for young kids. Ease of third row access car seat friendly tilt and by far one of the most comfortable third rows for two adults in it's midsize SUV class, and has side air vents back there! Grandparents climb back there (willingly) with our kids comfortably! Recommend trim level at least SE + Tech if you want to feel like you get more or at least what you pay for despite how expensive cars are these days. We were loaned a SE trim for few days and didn't realize how much the +Tech makes a difference! Ask a dealership to print the side by side trim comparison. Panoramic sunroof really opens up the vehicle. Great storage cubbies driver seat pass-through and on all doors. Climate control being within the touchscreen takes a bit of getting used to, and love customizable views within driver dashboard. Trunk with third row up fits mid grocery order just fine, with options to fold the third row down and have so much trunk space. Roof rails available for cargo storage on top. Volkswagen app lets you remote start car or lock/unlock from phone. But, maybe too much transparency and data in the app coming from someone who also owns and regularly drives a 2012 Toyota Rav4! Only con so far is gas mileage it seems to take conscious effort (at least at first) even while driving eco mode to accelerate slowly and coast to get the advertised 20 mpg combined. But, you can set it to show average mpg on the driver dashboard live as you drive, so makes for fun competition with my husband! Test drive it sometime, hope you enjoy and explore it if this is a contender for your next family car! Let it depreciate then buy it CPO!

WARNING- mechanical issues!!! Shortest amount of time I’ve ever owned a car. The car would shut completely off (blacked out screen and all) sometimes (*randomly!*) when I was in traffic and stopped… which is super scary on the interstate! Yikes! It did it when the auto stop/start was on, it did it when it was OFF, it did it with a full tank of gas, with a very low tank of gas, etc etc etc…. It was very random & very scary! Got rid of it as soon as I could. As for car seats, I don’t have any of my true car seats but here’s a cute photo of how baby doll seats fit in the third row if it helps anyone, haha!

I love my car! To the point where my 2021 Atlas was totaled and I bought a new 2025. I could not beat the size and features for the price of the vehicle. I am 5’10”, my husband is even taller, and we both fit comfortably in all rows. I have the bench seat in the middle row and I am so thankful for that as I leave my third row down most of the time. However, when I need it, I am grateful that the 3rd only has 2 seats vs trying to cram an unusable third seat back there. My only qualm with the vehicle is that the bar with the temp control inside the vehicle is not lit, so it takes several button pushes to be able to see climate changes in the dark. Not a deal breaker, but definitely annoying to me. This and ceiling vents would be the 2 things to make this vehicle even better. I love my car and truly if something were to happen to this car, I would still buy it again. Like I said it has every feature that I want and I don’t feel like paying for a full size SUV at this time!

We bought this car while we had a 2 year old and newborn twins. Less than 2 years later we added another baby and had 4 kids in rear facing car seats. As far as I’m concerned, the Atlas is unmatched for car seat options and versatility. There are very few cars on the market this size that offer so many anchor options for both rear and forward facing! All 4 rear facing car seats was definitely doable and now we have 3 forward facing and 1 rear facing. We put our 4 year old twins in the third row forward facing with have the right middle row seat down for easy access to the third row. Our 6 year old is in the middle seat of the second row and our 2 year old is in the left middle row with a Chico revolve 360. We’ve gone through several different car seats and configurations over the last few years as our needs have changed, but the Atlas has given us the options to make that happen! We love the versatility, comfort and style of the car. The interior feels very high end. As far as the negatives- we wish the trunk was a little larger, it can be difficult to fit a double stroller in and impossible to fit our 4 seater or wagon when the kids were younger. We’ve also had a few issues with the technology and Bluetooth now that we’ve owned the car for 5 years. But overall, we love it! Highly recommend it to families with lots of small children in car seats. It has grown well with our family!

I got my Volkswagen Atlas when my third baby was born and I realized I couldn't fit all 3 kids comfortably in my car. I was waiting for my R1S at the time and needed something that could handle 3 little kids and all the car seats, and honestly, the Atlas was amazing for what we needed. We ended up keeping it for over a year and a half. The biggest positive was SPACE. I could fit 3 car seats across the second row, but we also had the third row whenever we needed it. The second row was so roomy that I could actually sit between the car seats when I needed to, which was incredibly helpful with a baby and two other little kids. The trunk space was also amazing. Even with all the baby gear, stroller, diaper bags, groceries, etc., I never felt like I was constantly fighting for space. As a family car for 3 young kids, the layout was incredibly practical. My biggest negative was how my Atlas drove. I never loved the way it felt, it seemed slow at times, and mine made some noises that made me wonder if something was going on with the transmission. There were honestly a few times I worried it was going to leave me stuck in the middle of the road! It never actually did, but I didn't have a lot of confidence in the way mine drove. That said, for the stage of life we were in: 3 very young kids, multiple car seats, a baby, and ALL the stuff that comes with them, the Atlas was exactly what we needed. If your priority is fitting 3 kids comfortably, having flexible third-row seating, and getting a ton of usable family cargo space, I thought it was a great family SUV.

Love my car for the affordability and all that comes standard. Definite pros to the VW Atlas. Cons: my brakes have made a grinding noise since I’ve owned the car. VW tells me it’s normal and just the materiel of the brakes. But a big bummer for something that occurred in a brand new vehicle! Another con is sometimes the tech is glitchy. But nothing major so far!

I have absolutely loved my atlas. It is roomy, technology is not too over the top but just right. Only qualm is wanting a heated steering wheel but I can live without it! We are a military family and drive along to see family and this car is comfortable for our whole family of 4, luggage, stroller, and golden retriever dog to all ride in. My husband is very tall and he rides and drives comfortably in it as well. The trunk space is very large and fits our large stroller easily. I cannot recommend this car enough!

This has been a great car for our family. Even my dad easily got in the 3rd row. We got the SE with a tech and captains chairs in the second row. I really appreciate having 2 usable seats in the back vs squeezed 3 like some SUVs of this size. I also really appreciate that floor stays the same level between 2nd and 3rd row. Plenty of get up and go with the turbo.

Great for the kids. We got the captain chairs option so the kids can walk through to the third row. Only complaint is the trunk space.

We purchased a 2018 Atlas in 2021. We have only had to do normal wear and tear repairs and have had no issues with reliability. We have three kids under 7, and it is a great size for us. I absolutely love the technology in our SEL model. I feel like you get excellent value for the money. I would drive this car forever if I could!

Roomy inside but drives like a covered wagon. Noisy and hard/very firm ride. I didn’t keep the car for long as I didn’t enjoy the drive/ride or the lack of reliability VW offers. It is roomy but personally it wasn’t for me.

The atlas with a bench is a great, roomy car for my two RF toddlers! Trunk space is plenty big for a double stroller and dog crate with the third row down! My only complaint is my 2021 has some quirks. The sensors go off randomly when I’m not close to anything and sometimes the screen stays black when I turn the car on. Other than those cons, it’s the perfect car for a family of four plus two dogs!

It’s been a fantastic car for our family of 4! The second row (with bench) has been excellent for 2 kids under 2. Love the exterior and the drive. Car is very spacious inside. Great trunk space for multiple strollers and more when the third row is down. Only negatives I’ve experienced are the wireless phone charger rarely working and the control panel being glitchy every once in a while.

I think the only thing I don’t like— legit I love my car— but there’s no buttons that light up at night on the center screen for controlling volume or temperature. It’s all on a screen that I have to click thru to get to. That’s the only downfall! But I love everything else about it!!!

It’s a great size for anyone with 1-4 kids. Lots of room even with the third row up. Luxury vehicle without the luxury price tag. Downfall is the amount of oil leaks I’ve had is insane. This is my second Atlas, but it’s worse this time around. I’ve had this one for 1.5 years and I’ve had four different oil leaks. All under warranty thankfully, but still very unsettling. My friend bought a 2026 Atlas and told me last week they found an oil leak this summer in hers, so I feel like this is unfortunately a common problem.

I really have nothing bad to say about this vehicle! The bold, sporty styling turns heads, and the space inside is amazing. One of the biggest selling points for me on the 2022 model was keeping actual physical buttons for controls—I didn’t want to rely on a touchscreen for everything, and having real buttons makes a huge difference. The VR6 engine is powerful, and it handles like a dream. While the cabin is a touch louder than some newer models, it doesn't bother me at all. Don't let the lack of ceiling vents scare you off either—the app-based remote engine start gets the cabin cooled down very quickly. Add in the gorgeous panoramic sunroof (a little ceramic tint works wonders for the summer heat), and it’s easily the best SUV I've owned!

I’m absolutely obsessed with my atlas peak edition! It’s the cutest and the room inside is perfect. We chose bucket seats in the 2nd row because we have one kid, and three dogs, so I can fit three medium kennels in the rest of the space. It is the most stylish car I’ve ever had and my ONLY complaint is that it’s not SUPER powerful-feeling to drive if that makes sense. That’s not really an issue for me and my needs but I’ve had a lot of people comment that they’re surprise it’s not a V6. I have towed a pop up camper with it and it did well. Everyone that rides in this car is impressed and I couldn’t be happier with it!

I bought the car for the safety, space, and style and based on Carmom’s recommendation. I love the Atlas. There are several minor technology issues that drive me crazy at times, but nothing that is a deal breaker. The most annoying is the alarm for four front sensors goes off all the time and it’s four alarming beeps, one for each alarm. The dealer said any time one of the sensors goes temporarily unavailable, an alarm will sound, and it could be triggered by a bug, glare from the sun, or stuck debris like snow. It goes off even when my car is idle. I asked if the alarms could be muted in any way and the dealer said no. The seat memory doesn’t always work. The mirrors are supposed to lower in reverse and that rarely works. And the touch less entry into the truck (waving your foot) also rarely works. The cordless charging only works for a brief moment and the dealer warned me of this during the test drive. The dealer said it won’t work with all cases. I tried with no case and it still doesn’t work. None of those were deal breakers though. The front and second rows are incredibly spacious. Plenty of leg room. Not enough cup folders! For the front and second row, there are two cup holders. The second has access to 1.5 cupholders if they put the back of the middle seat down; it has one normal size cupholder and one small (useless) cupholder. No ceiling vents in the back, but my kids have never complained about it being too hot. My kids love the second row heated seats. Plenty of USB-C plugs throughout the car. With the third row down, the trunk is big! I get a lot of comments on trunk space. 3.5 stars overall seems too low for how much I like this car, but the individual ratings I assigned are as honest as I can be.

I owned a Honda Odyssey prior to purchasing the Atlas. Although I loved my van, I was ready for an SUV again. The Atlas was a fantastic option because it has a 3rd row for hauling my kids friends, is one of the largest SUVS in the midsize category, and is priced well. It’s a very attractive vehicle and I get compliments on it all the time. If you want a spacious 3rd row SUV in the $50k range that ages well and looks nice for years to come, this is an excellent choice!

Family of 5 with a boaster seat and infant seat and tall husband. The second row seating is top notch. Kids have space even with an infant seat, lots of leg room and the panoramic sunroof is a must! Third row is spacious and usable even for an adult. There is still actual trunk space with third row up but with it down it’s even more amazing! Busy Realtor, baseball family with a baby that trunk is loaded. Performance is ok. No major complaints but also nothing exciting. The ride is not as smooth as previously owned full-size vehicles and road noise seems a bit excessive. Overall great familidsize suv

Love this car as a third row vehicle! Purchased this to be able to transport large cargo and up to three kiddos at a time and love the versatility. The back seats lay flat for cargo or up for seat usage. The third row is not incredibly spacious but works well for the kids I carry in the third row. The second row is spacious for adults to ride. The air vents go all the way to the third row so no worries about sweaty passengers in the back. I find the technology to be a tad bit glitchy but chalked that up to it being a used vehicle. I also am not a huge fan of the cruise assist feature but was able to turn it off so that wasn’t a huge deal. Ability to switch into AWD is also very simple to use and the car handles wonderfully in inclement weather.

Love the size of the 2nd and 3rd rows and trunk. Multiple little problems (rusting trunk ledge, leak in sunroof & sensitive sensors that are “too dirty” for cruise control). We had major issues with the local VW dealer, then VW corporate after we couldn’t resolve the issues at the local dealership, so we won’t buy VW again. Which is a bummer, because the functionality of this car is superb. Want to look at Grand Highlander next, knowing Toyota is better to work with.

I’ve been loving my Volkswagen Atlas SEL R-Line Premium as a family car! One of my biggest things when choosing an SUV was space, and the Atlas definitely delivers. We have a Grow With Me car seat installed, and there’s still plenty of room for someone to comfortably sit in the passenger seat without feeling cramped. The third row is also surprisingly spacious — my husband is 6’4” and I’m 5’9”, and we can both fit back there comfortably, which says a lot! The trunk space has been great too. I can fit my stroller plus groceries without feeling like I’m playing Tetris every time I load the car. 😂 Overall, it’s been such a great mom/family SUV for us. It feels roomy without being ridiculously huge, and I love that we have the flexibility of the third row as our family grows.

I wanted to love this car, but I just don’t. It’s my first time with captains chairs and maybe I would like it more if it had a bench, but not sure. The trunk space with the third row up is very limited and it’s hard since I’m a self-proclaimed trunk hoarder. Maybe I’m the problem? I’ve had a ton of electrical issues with the car, even brand new that they haven’t fixed. It’s good for car seat configuration and I like the car seat tilt but it just feels inside like it’s doing the bare minimum. I also miss knobs! I feel unsafe with the touchscreen while driving and the steering wheel doesn’t have an answer/hang up button for phone calls. The lack of ceiling vents in the second row is also a downer as one of my kids is rear facing and she gets super sweaty since there aren’t vents. My son does love riding in the third row and has an easy time getting back there. The drive is nice, but feels sluggish sometimes. Gas mileage is lackluster. I love the look of it from the outside but overall disappointed. I know people love this car though so maybe it’s just not the one for me!

The trunk space is very limited if the third row is up - that is probably my biggest “con”. As a family of five, if we are traveling and need to take a stroller, we either need to put one side of the third row down (not ideal) or use our car topper. Otherwise - we have not had any issues. To me personally, the front end feels a little large but just takes some getting used to. It has been reliable and safe for us!

This car has been a workhorse for our family. We put a ton of miles on her with long trips as well as daily driving. Rear floor vents were broken by kids inadvertently stepping on them which was annoying and seems like a bad choice for a car made to haul children. Trunk space we felt like was the best of what we had compared it to at the time: Acadia, Enclave and Explorer. Maintenance from Volkswagen is kind of pricey and tough to find the correct oil if you want to get an oil change outside of the dealership. Great all season car!

We have the bench in the middle row and have been overall very happy with the vehicle. We have the SEL trim, and there are a few things I wish we had (power-folding mirrors and a better backup camera), but those didn't push us to go up a trim level because we wanted FWD, and for 2018, the top trim was only available in AWD. The reviewers at the time did caution about the engine power for the size of the vehicle, and I do agree that it is underpowered.

We have loved the Atlas! This car saw our family through the transition of 2-3 kids and then 3-4 kids, an ultimate car seat machine. I love the drive and the comfort/tech. When our lease was up we did ultimately decide to move into a minivan, but had we owned the Atlas it would have continued to work great for all 6 of us!!

I absolutely loved my car until my lease ended. When my lease ended it was like all the problems started. I had to replace my fuel pump, get a full carbon clean-out. My current gas gauge is failing. I wish she never failed me. I love her so much :(

I really love my Atlas, it’s been a blessing because of all the things I can travel with, specially when I got it since both of my daughters were toddlers. The driving is pretty smooth, just lacks some technology upgrades.

Great for our needs with two kids, PLENTY of space and storage. Best value for the space and design in my opinion! I got the SE model, and I wish I would’ve gotten the tech model. The tailgate is HEAVY. Other than that, I love it.

The atlas is a fantastic, spacious option for those who are looking for a size upgrade but not wanting to make the jump to a suburban style car. We can fit 3 car seats across easily in the second row and have a huge amount of space in the trunk when needed! Our daily set up is two in the third row and one in the second row and it still feels super spacious even with the car seats spread out. We’ve driven this car up and down the east coast, fully loaded with kids, snacks, and suitcases. It’s the best!

I love everything about my 2024 VW Atlas SEL R-Line....except the lack of physical buttons on the infotainment system, especially for climate control. You get used to it, but it's a micro-annoyance I have. The media/bluetooth/Apple Carplay connection also drives me insane about once a month. I'll have days where it drops connection without notice and won't reconnect until I restart the car completely. I love everthing else about it though - the sporty R-Line exterior, comfy seats (comfier than Audi IMO), simple interior design and amazing cargo space. The sport mode is super fun if your a real "car girl"! The carseat setup has been great for my daughter as she transition to a convertible carseat, booster seat and now backless booster!

Wonderful family car. I love this car and have had no issues since I got it in 2022. I have the captain seats in the second row which works really nicely with my 2 kids, especially with the car seat tilt. 3rd row is roomy for adults. Great trunk space. Love the large sunroof and interior appearance. My only complaint is the storage design of the center console area. There is supposed to be a wireless charging area but it is hard to access when the gear shift is in park and it rarely works to actually charge my phone. The only other storage space is up on the dash where things cook in the sun. I got an organizer for inside the center console so that has helped. It probably helps me have less clutter because there just isn’t an open spot to put stuff.

The Atlas has great space and I love the design and comfort of the interior. I do wish it had a little more power but it's only a 4 cylinder. My biggest issue with my atlas is the technology, the infotainment system is terrible. There are times it's blurry, or apple car play just doesn't work, or my gps doesn't sync with my car and it thinks I'm on a different road. Currently my windshield wipers go off when it's not even raining. My friend had an older atlas, 2021 or 2022, and she also had complaints about technology. It has served it's purpose but I'm ready for something new.

My kids call it, “the cool car.” It is. We got the R line and it is fancy, comfortable, fits two maxi cosi prias, a nuna infant seat in the second row, and the nuna booster in the back row! We fit our huge double stroller (Tule urban glide) in the trunk with the wheel removed. I feel so safe in this car. I highly recommend it.

I have a 2021+ se with tech 6 cyl, bought new, now has about 40k miles. Ive loved this car since buying it. Not had any issues. I’ve had just regular maintenance, a popped tire, and a new battery in the 5 years I’ve owned it. The only issue I’ve ever had was the cordless charging station. It’s very picky on how the phone sits when charging and since you use it while driving the phone shifts around and then stops charging. My SIL has a 4 cyl engine and has had a lot more problems. So maybe if looking to buy this car, go for the 6 cyl. I test drive both when buying and thought the 6 cyl was a much nicer ride. The 3rd row is the roomiest 3rd row I’ve even been in and the car itself can hold a ton if you are needing to haul anything. Somehow got a whole sheet of plywood to fit with the seats down. Overall, love this suv. Really happy with the purchase.

I have three car seats installed in second row - two rear facing and one front facing (twins plus big sibling), all kids under 3 yo. While slim fit seats fit beautifully, the summer heat can be tough to combat with the lack of AC vents for rear facing kids. Vents blast at the car seat since they are centrally located, behind the console. Would love if the vents were located higher up. Great trunk space with third row down. Still great trunk space with one seat down in third row - can fit a medium size dog back there! Our cattle dog loved her seat.

It’s worked very well for our family of four, both when the kids were younger and now when they are school age. I love the bench! It’s given us no mechanical issues and has only needed scheduled maintenance.

I researched the heck out of the Volkswagen Atlas and after the car mom reviewed, we test drove and purchased! Fits 3 nuna car seats and booster seat in the 2nd row comfortably which was the main struggle when looking for a car. We have had it a year and a half now and still loving it

I adore my Volkswagen Atlas. I bought it thanks to research and videos from the car mom and it’s been the perfect family car. The trunk space is huge, the 2nd row is also incredibly spacious and the front row feels big too! I the look of it and I’ve had no problems with it. I just wish my 2018 had remote start and ceiling vents in the back. Other than that, I’ll drive this car as long as I can!

Love the flexibility of the car. Dislike mo ceiling vents and lack of buttons (all the climate and radio are within the infotainment). Fits car seats great as well as my growing tween and her friends.
