Features We Love
  • Impressive Cargo Space: Even with the third row in use, the cargo area is large enough to fit a full-size Mockingbird stroller. The split tailgate also helps keep groceries and gear from sliding out when you open the trunk.
  • Premium, Adventure-Ready Interior: The cabin feels upscale with beautiful wood trim, a panoramic glass roof, premium materials, and comfortable seating, while still being designed for an active family lifestyle.
  • Electric Performance with Real Capability: With up to 350 miles of range and impressive off-road capability, the Rivian R1S combines everyday family practicality with the ability to confidently tackle road trips and outdoor adventures.

The Exterior

A Unique Look That Stands Out

There's no mistaking the Rivian R1S. Its signature front light bar, boxy shape, and rugged styling make it one of the most recognizable SUVs on the road. While it's considered a midsize SUV, it offers a commanding presence and feels right at home whether you're running errands around town or exploring off the beaten path.

During my time with it, I drove through water crossings, rocky terrain, and steep hills on our family farm, and the R1S handled everything with confidence.

First Row

What It's Like to Drive

The Rivian offers approximately 350 miles of range on a full charge, making it a practical option for many families considering an electric vehicle. Like most EVs, it uses one-pedal driving, where lifting your foot off the accelerator slows the vehicle through regenerative braking.

It takes some adjustment if you're new to electric vehicles, but after a few drives it becomes second nature. That said, I still found myself missing a traditional start/stop button. The vehicle automatically turns on and off based on whether you're inside, which wasn't always convenient in certain situations.

A Beautiful Interior With One Big Drawback

The interior is where Rivian really shines. The wood trim, panoramic glass roof, suede headliner, and premium materials create a cabin that feels both luxurious and adventure-ready.

The biggest downside is the lack of physical controls. Nearly every function—including adjusting the air vents—is controlled through the touchscreen. While the system is visually impressive and easy to learn overall, I found the climate controls unnecessarily complicated for everyday use.

Storage throughout the front cabin is decent, though a few cubbies could be larger for family essentials.

Second Row

How Family-Friendly Is It?

This is where the Rivian impressed me the most.

I successfully installed three car seats across the second row using a combination that included a slim car seat. While not every three-across setup will work, families willing to choose the right car seats should have good success.

The second row offers:

  • Lower anchors on both outboard seats
  • Tether anchors for every second-row seating position
  • Easy access to USB-C charging ports
  • Flat floor space that's great for bags and kids' feet

Third Row

The third row is also more usable than I expected. While legroom isn't generous for adults, the seats themselves are deep enough to make car seat installation much easier than many competitors. That's a huge advantage for larger families who regularly use all three rows.

Trunk

Cargo Space That Works for Real Life

With all three rows in use, I was still able to fit my Mockingbird stroller in the cargo area, which is always one of my biggest family tests.

I also loved the split tailgate design, which helps keep groceries, sports gear, or loose items from falling out when you open the trunk.

One frustration, however, is raising the third-row seats. Since they aren't power-operated, you have to physically climb into the cargo area to lift them into place. A simple pull strap would have made this process much easier.

Bought this after selling our Ford Expedition. It was not on my radar to move to full EV, but I am never looking back! I wanted better gas milage and reliability and boy does Rivan exceed that. It's like driving a truck with a sporty ride. We've owned it for nearly 3 years with zero issues other than rotating tires (and one new set - it's heavy so it does go through winter tires quickly). The kids love it. Boosters fit well and the kids can easily crawl to the third row. Tech is amazing. It doesn't have Apple Car play, which I thought was a downfall, but I love their tech more. I will be coming back to Rivian for a new one (my oldest already called dibs on this one when he can drive!).

We love the cool factor of the Rivian and that it drives like a truck. It’s the smaller of our two cars and perfect for hauling our two kids in car seats and two big dogs. I also like that we can take a grandparent with only minor inconvenience do me crawling into the third row. Although it’s tiny compared to our Yukon xl third row, it’s actually more comfortable if you can slide the second row seats forward a bit because it’s not as bouncy. I love the split tailgate for diaper changing and the 2026 switched to Tesla charging port and seamless payment in the app which makes longer roadtrips a breeze!

I went with the Rivian because my family was making the switch to electric. We love teslas but I wanted more space. The R1S has a ton of room!! It almost feels like you’re driving a truck. It has a gorgeous interior, it literally gets so many looks and comments. I do feel that it has had issues. It is a newer company so it’s somewhat expected. My screen has had to be reset many times. There was a coolant issue that required my car to be in the shop for over a week, they said it’s common when temps get super cold. That happens in Pittsburgh a lot. The air bag sensors have gone off saying to service immediately. My key card (with electric cars your keys are pretty much like a credit card) stopped connecting and had to be reset. Overall, I LOVE the exterior and interior but the reliability isn’t living up to what it should be doing and therefore, I am switching back to a Tesla model y, not only for reliability but that full self drive is just incredible

I will never buy a different brand - Rivian is our favorite! Hands down the best, most reliable, highest quality vehicle I have owned. I would describe it as utility/adventure meets luxe EV. In 3 years, we have not had one single issue and have only needed tire rotations and windshield washer fluid! It's fun to drive, superb technology that makes mom life easier ("Hey Rivian, turn the AC on high and add a coffee stop to my route"). It's got more HP, torque, and towing capacity than our construction trucks (a bit humbling for some macho folks!). We have done cross-country tenting/camping trips with room to spare thanks to the space the front trunk gives. We live in the coldest area of the lower 48 with the least amount of public chargers and have never had an issue with charging (most is done at home - so you always have a 'full tank' to get you over 360 miles of range each morning). My unexpected love is the over the air tech updates every month or two, so you feel like you are getting all the new bells and whistles without buying a new car; these have even increased our efficiency and range. With fuel prices the way they are, we are so thankful to be able to drive 360+ miles for about $10 (our cost of electricity at home). Driving in snow is a breeze thanks to the adjustable height to get through drifts. The heavy weight of the vehicle keeps us steady in high winds. My only wishes were for captains chairs for our growing kids (coming in 2027) and if the 3rd row had a little more squish to the seats - after 5 hours, they feel stiff.

We absolutely love our Rivian R1S. It feels luxurious, thoughtfully designed, and packed with cool modern features that make it genuinely fun to drive or be a passenger in. We have one child in a rear-facing car seat and a dog, and there’s plenty of room for everyone and all our gear. My husband mainly drives it, but it’s our go-to family car for weekends and outings. Our only complaint is that we have to move the front passenger seat farther forward than we’d like to accommodate our rear-facing Graco Extend2Fit car seat. That may be due to the specific seat and its rear-facing setup, rather than the vehicle itself. Overall, the R1S is comfortable, spacious, capable, and a great fit for our family!

I love my Rivian! First of all, it is a very fun car to drive. I drive a lot and LOVE not having to go to a gas station and being able to charge at home. It is perfect for our family with 2 kids to have the option of the 3rd row if we are bringing friends. That said, one of my biggest complaints is adjusting the seats in the 2nd row after accessing the third row. It takes a lot of manual adjustments that my 7 year old is not able to do and it would be quite the hassle if using the 3rd row daily.

This is just a cool car. A seriously great mid sized SUV with the optional two seater third row. The tech is so fun, every few week updates makes the car always feel new. I love the look of this car and it once you drive a fast EV like this- you will never go back. This car is silent and packed with >800 horsepower. Great storage with a large frunk and deep compartmented trunk. An upgrade from my previous Volvo XC90 in all ways.

Great car for 3 kids! The middle seat in the middle row flips down for easy access to 3rd row. Come: Middle seat is a bit narrow and doesn’t have car seat tilt. Love the 2 back seats in 3rd row.

Love the performance, the comfort features and the space in the car. My only main gripe with it is that there’s just not enough storage (cubbies/cupholders) for a mom. I also find some of the tech distracting while driving (especially the climate control).

Hands down the very best car we have ever owned. Who doesn't like a "tank" costing just 10 dollars to take you over 350 miles? Fits the family extremely well for road trips. We love to camp and can easily pack for a family of 5 tenting thanks to the huge front trunk. We live in the coldest area of the country and do lose about 20-30% on the coldest days ( - 40 degrees in January) but has not impacted us at all on where we go. It is our first EV and we will never go back. The only drawback is that my oldest said the 3rd row seat felt stiff after 10 hours on a cross country road trip this summer.
