Features We Love

The 2026 Atlas is the last model year of this body style, and I wanted one more in-depth look before it goes, because there isn’t a more car seat friendly midsize SUV out there. It’s not the biggest in its class, but it makes the best use of its space of any of them. If you don’t want a full-size SUV but still need room for four or five kids in car seats, this is the one I’d point you to.

  • Three-across bench on every trim: the second-row bench is available on all trim levels, and I fit two Graco SlimFit3 LXs and an Evenflo Revolve360 Slim side by side. You’ll likely need a slim seat in the middle, but the outboard seats can take just about anything.
  • Lower anchors in all three second-row seats: every second-row position has lower anchors. Just know the center anchors overlap the outboard seat belt behind the driver, so plan your installs (more on that below).
  • Top tethers in all five rear seats: every seat in the second and third rows has a top tether anchor.
  • Car seat tilt on both sides, even with seats installed: the 60/40 bench tilts and slides forward for third-row access with a LATCH-installed car seat still in place. Because the center seat belt is built into the vehicle seat, my belt-installed middle seat tilted right along with it.
  • Room to rotate in a three-across setup: I could still turn my Revolve360 Slim to buckle my kid in, and I don’t think any other midsize SUV can pull that off.
  • Legroom for tall parents with rear-facing seats: at about 6 feet tall, I still had plenty of legroom with a bulky car seat behind me. This is one of my go-to picks for taller moms and dads.
  • A third row with two seats that actually work: removable head restraints and great buckle access let me fit two wide seats back there, the Britax Grow With You and the Nuna AACE.
  • A car that grows with your family: you could buy this when you’re pregnant with your first and still fit everyone at four or five kids.
Car Mom Review

The Exterior

The Last Model Year of This Body Style

The Atlas first came out in 2018, got a major refresh in 2024, and 2026 is the final year for this body style before the all-new 2027 Atlas arrives. If you love how this generation looks, this is your last chance to buy it new. (I covered the refreshed version in depth in my 2024 Volkswagen Atlas review.)

Not the Biggest Midsize SUV, but the Best Use of Space

The Atlas isn’t the largest SUV in its class. The Chevy Traverse, Honda Pilot, GMC Acadia, and even the Kia Telluride are a little bigger. But no one uses its space better, and that’s what makes it such a strong family car. For reference, the Atlas measures:

  • 200.7 inches long
  • 78.3 inches wide
  • 70.4 inches high
  • 6.3 inches of ground clearance

The Peak Edition Adds a Rugged Look

The Atlas I tested was the Peak Edition, which is just plain fun. Compared to other trims, it has:

  • Silver underbody cladding and a gloss-black “X” across the lower front
  • A blacked-out grille, mirror caps, window surround, and roof rails
  • 18-inch glossy black wheels with all-terrain tires
  • A standard panoramic sunroof

Lighting and Liftgate Features Families Will Notice

On every trim except the base SE, the Atlas has an illuminated lightbar and VW logo on both the front and back. SE with Technology trims and above also add a hands-free liftgate you can open with a kick under the rear bumper, which is a lifesaver when your arms are full of kids and groceries.

First Row

The cabin feels refined. The materials feel premium, the stitching looks elevated, and everything just feels thoughtful. The front row carries over from the 2024 refresh, with one new addition for 2026: an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink on SE with Technology trims and above.

Big Tech Upgrades Come Standard on Every 2026 Atlas

Every Atlas comes with:

  • A 12-inch infotainment display
  • A digital driver display
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Wireless charging
  • USB-C ports throughout
  • A bridge-style center console with added storage

The infotainment screen is dramatically improved over the pre-2024 Atlas. It looks modern and clean, almost like Apple CarPlay even when CarPlay isn’t active.

Heated and Ventilated Front Seats Are Standard on the Atlas

One of my favorite additions is that heated and ventilated front seats are standard across the whole Atlas lineup. That’s a huge win, and not something many manufacturers include without pushing you up a trim level.

Higher Trims Add a Head-Up Display, Ambient Lighting, and a Panoramic Sunroof

On higher trims, you’ll also find:

  • A head-up display
  • Customizable ambient lighting (every color of the rainbow)
  • A panoramic sunroof

The ambient lighting package is genuinely fun. It runs through the dash and doors and adds a level of personality the Atlas was missing before.

A Stanley Fits in the Door Cubby

Volkswagen absolutely understands American cup culture. You can fit a Stanley in the door cubby, and that alone deserves applause.

Second Row

There isn’t a more car seat friendly second row in a midsize SUV than the one in the Atlas. You can choose a three-seat bench (available on every trim) or captain’s chairs (available on SE with Technology and above), and both have car seat tilt. But the bench is where the Atlas really shines, and it’s the setup I tested.

Lower Anchors and Top Tethers in All Three Atlas Bench Seats

Every second-row seating position has:

  • A set of lower anchors
  • A top tether anchor
  • A removable head restraint

The head restraints sit relatively flush with the seat, especially in the center, so they rarely get in the way of a car seat or booster.

The Center Lower Anchors Overlap the Seat Belt Behind the Driver

The center seat’s lower anchors overlap with the outboard seat belt behind the driver. That means if you use the center lower anchors, you can’t use the seat belt behind the driver at the same time. For the center seat and the seat behind the driver, plan on either two seat belt installs or two lower anchor installs.

The Center Seat Needs a Narrow, Belt-Installed Car Seat

The center buckle and the buckle next to it are very close together. Most car seats are too wide to install in the middle without resting on that buckle, which can damage it. You can contact VW for a buckle cover if you want a wider seat in the center, but the cover makes the outboard buckle unusable.

So if you want three across with the outboard seats installed with the seat belt (which is usually what you’ll need), your center car seat should be:

  • Very narrow
  • Installed with the seat belt

This is where the Graco SlimFit3 LX shines. Other narrow seats can work here too, but nothing is as versatile.

Three Across in the VW Atlas

Bench seats are not created equal. There are plenty of cars where I’d tell you to skip the bench because it’s not three-across friendly or causes more problems than it solves. The Atlas is the exception. I honestly don’t know if I could have designed this bench better myself.

My three-across setup was two Graco SlimFit3 LXs and an Evenflo Revolve360 Slim, all installed with the seat belt because that gave me a little more room than lower anchors. But so many combinations will work here. The outboard seats are wide enough for just about any car seat, a booster, or even an adult. It’s not quite as wide as an Expedition or Suburban, where you could put any seats back there, but if you’re shopping for an Atlas, you may only need to buy one new slim seat instead of three. (If you’re still deciding, here are the cars that fit three car seats across.)

A Rotating Seat Still Turns in a Three-Across Setup

Yes, I could actually rotate my Revolve360 Slim with two other seats next to it. I couldn’t do the full rotation in one direction, but I could still turn it enough to buckle my child in, and I could rotate it the full 360 the other way. Having that kind of versatility three across in a car this size is something I don’t think any other midsize SUV can do. (Here are my favorite rotating car seats if you’re considering one.)

Atlas Car Seat Tilt Works on Both Sides with a Seat Installed

The star of the show is car seat tilt, and it’s available on both sides of the 60/40 split bench. The 40% side is behind the passenger, and the center seat and the seat behind the driver share the 60% side. When you tilt the 60% side, the whole section tilts and slides forward, car seat and all.

Car seat tilt is meant for car seats installed with lower anchors. But the center seat belt is attached to the vehicle seat itself, so I could still tilt that side with my belt-installed center seat in place. The result is a really good path to the third row, from either side.

Recessed Buckles Make Boosters Tough for Younger Kids

The second-row buckles are recessed and rigid, and they’re very hard for booster kids to use, especially younger ones. My advice is to not rush into a booster in this vehicle. If your child has outgrown their car seat by harness height, look at something like the Chicco MyFit, which has a 54-inch harness height. My 7-year-old is in the 90th percentile and can still be harnessed in it. I wouldn’t be harnessing him because it’s safer. I’d be harnessing him because it’s more convenient than having him fumble through that buckle, especially three across.

Room for Tall Parents Behind Rear-Facing Seats

I’m about 6 feet tall, and I had so much legroom back here. That’s great for adult passengers and big, bulky car seats, and it’s a game changer for tall parents who will have kids rear-facing behind them. The Atlas is one of my go-to recommendations for taller moms and dads.

If you plan to use the second and third rows at the same time, I recommend a compact car seat in the second row to preserve third-row legroom, like:

Rear Vents, USB-C, and Sunshades, but No Ceiling Vents

Second-row amenities include:

  • Vents on the back of the center console
  • Two USB-C ports
  • Built-in sunshades (SE with Technology and above)

The one thing the Atlas is missing is ceiling vents. That’s a huge miss, and I’ve already seen the 2027, so I can tell you they’re not coming next year either.

Third Row

Two Full-Size Third-Row Seats in the Atlas

So many midsize SUVs fight to fit three seats in the third row. The Atlas went the other way and put in two really good ones, and it was an excellent decision. That choice gives you two great installs and two comfortable seats that can fit adults, kids in boosters, or kids in car seats.

I had two very wide seats back here, the Britax Grow With You and the Nuna AACE. Those aren’t seats I’d normally put in a third row, but the seats are so wide and the buckles are so easy to reach that they worked. Even a booster kid can get to their buckle on their own.

Top Tethers in Both Atlas Third-Row Seats, but No Lower Anchors

Both third-row seats have a top tether anchor and a removable head restraint, which really helps with car seat and booster compatibility. There are no lower anchors back here, though, which matters for some boosters. I cover what that means for your installs in Car Seat Setup below.

Atlas Third-Row Legroom Depends on Your Second-Row Car Seat

Even with the second row slid all the way back, I think there’s really great legroom back here. But a low-profile car seat in the second row makes a big difference. A convertible seat that sits higher off the ground, combined with the angle of the second-row seatback, will leave your third-row kids a little tighter on legroom. With a low-profile seat, there’s plenty of legroom for the second row, the third row, and the driver. This is what I mean when I say the Atlas uses its space so well.

How to Reach the Atlas Third Row with Car Seats Installed

Car seat tilt on either side of the second row moves the seat up and forward without uninstalling a car seat installed with lower anchors, so getting back here doesn’t mean undoing your second-row setup.

Side Vents and Cup Holders on Both Sides

Third-row amenities are pretty good. The vents are on the side pillars instead of down on the floor, which is actually better placement, and there are cup holders on both sides.

Trunk

How Much Cargo Space Is in the 2026 Atlas?

With the third row up, the Atlas has 20.6 cubic feet of cargo space. That’s a great size trunk for the size of the car, about the same as the Kia Telluride and only behind the Chevy Traverse and GMC Acadia in the midsize category.

Fold the seats down and it opens up fast:

  • Third row up: 20.6 cu ft
  • Third row folded: 55.5 cu ft
  • Second and third rows folded: 96.6 cu ft

A Double Stroller Fits with the Atlas Third Row Up

You can fit a double stroller back here (with some maneuvering), plus groceries. There’s extra storage underneath the floor and cubbies on the sides, which are perfect for a gallon of milk or a watermelon. It’s also a handy spot to stash the third-row head restraints when you remove them for car seats.

The Atlas Third Row Folds Flat in Seconds

The seats are very easy to lay flat. They’re manual, quick, and simple, with no waiting on slow power-fold mechanisms. On SE with Technology trims and above, you also get a hands-free liftgate.

A Workhorse That Grows with Your Family

You know what she is? She’s a workhorse. She just gets it done. I always tell first-time moms to delay their car purchase, because you don’t know what your family is going to look like. You could have one kid, four kids, or surprise twins. The Atlas is one of those rare cars you could buy when you’re pregnant with your first and still fit everyone at four or five kids. I have four kids, seven and under, and we could easily all fit in this car.

Safety

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas Earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas earned a 2026 TOP SAFETY PICK award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It received the top rating of “Good” in the small overlap front, updated moderate overlap front, and updated side crash tests.

Rear Seat Belt Pretensioners Are New for the 2026 Atlas

You have pretensioners in both second-row outboard seats, and it’s an IIHS Top Safety Pick, which is very hard to do. When the IIHS redesigned how they do their Top Safety Pick program, so much of the score came down to what happened in the second row. Because of those second-row pretensioners, the Atlas performed a lot better in the crash test, which is one of the reasons why it’s a Top Safety Pick, and one of the reasons why it’s such a good car for families.

Standard Driver Assistance Features on Every Atlas Trim

Every 2026 Atlas comes standard with Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE suite, which includes:

  • Front Assist (Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring)
  • Travel Assist (semi-automated hands-on driving assistance)
  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go
  • Active Side Assist (Blind Spot Monitor)
  • Rear Traffic Alert
  • Lane Assist (Lane Keeping System)
  • Emergency Assist (can slow the vehicle to a stop if the driver becomes unresponsive)

Every Atlas also includes Exit Warning, Light Assist (automatic high beams), Automatic Post-Collision Braking, a rearview camera, and six airbags.

Available Safety Features on Higher Atlas Trims

  • Park Distance Control (SE with Technology and above)
  • Head-up display and Dynamic Road Sign Display (SEL and above)
  • Park Assist and Area View overhead camera (SEL Premium R-Line)
Car Seat Setup

Don’t want a full-size SUV, but still need to fit 4–5 kids in car seats? The Atlas is the car that can fit everyone practically and comfortably.

Atlas Second Row: Bench Seat or Captain’s Chairs

The second row offers either a bench seat or captain’s chairs, and both have car-seat-friendly tilt. The Atlas bench is arguably the best in any midsize SUV for three-across setups.

Lower Anchors and Top Tethers in the 2026 Atlas

Every seating position in the second and third rows has:

  • A removable head restraint
  • A top tether anchor

Every second-row seating position also has lower anchors. Lower anchors are notably missing from the third row. While they aren’t necessary for a safe car seat installation, they’re helpful for booster seats. Many boosters offer lower anchor connectors to keep the seat secure when unoccupied. Otherwise, buckle the booster in with the seat belt to keep it from becoming a projectile in a crash.

Atlas Center Seat: Overlapping Lower Anchors and Tight Buckle Spacing

The second-row center lower anchors are unfortunately overlapped by the seat belt behind the driver. That means if you want to use the center seat’s lower anchors, you can’t use the seat belt behind the driver at the same time.

Additionally, the space between the center seat belt buckle and the buckle for the adjacent position is very small. This means most car seats are too wide to install in the middle seat without resting on the belt buckle, which can damage the buckle.

Refer to your owner’s manual for specific guidance, but you can contact VW for a buckle cover if you want to install a larger car seat in the center position. The buckle cover makes the outboard passenger buckle unusable.

Translation: If you want to install the outboard seat with the seat belt (usually needed for three-across installs), your center car seat must be:

  • Very narrow
  • Installed using the seat belt

Enter the Graco SlimFit3 LX. While some other narrow car seats work here too, nothing is as versatile as this seat. And because the center seat belt is attached to the vehicle seat itself, a belt-installed center seat can still tilt forward with the 60% side of the bench.

Best Car Seats for the Atlas Second Row

The wide outboard seats can accommodate just about any car seat. There’s also plenty of legroom to fit large seats front-to-back. For my 2026 tour, I fit two Graco SlimFit3 LXs and an Evenflo Revolve360 Slim three across, all installed with the seat belt.

If you plan to use both the second and third rows for passengers at the same time, I recommend using a compact car seat in the second row to preserve third-row legroom.

Examples of compact seats include:

Atlas Third Row Car Seat Space and Access

The third row has two full-size seats and can comfortably fit:

  • Adults
  • Children in boosters
  • Children in car seats

Rear-facing seats fit, but they must be compact. Even wider seats like the Britax Grow With You and Nuna AACE fit back here, with easy buckle access.

To access the third row, use the car seat tilt feature, which moves the seat up and forward without compromising a car seat installed with lower anchors. Of course, this also works with no car seat installed.

A rotating car seat is a great option here, so even a rear-facing seat can take advantage of car seat tilt. Car seats that rotate and have higher lower anchor weight limits in rear-facing mode include:

These seats also work three across next to a narrow, low-profile, forward-facing car seat in the center, like the Graco SlimFit3 LX.

Car Seats That Aren’t Compatible with the Atlas

Any forward-facing harnessed seat or booster seat that:

  1. Requires a head restraint
  2. Doesn’t permit a gap caused by a head restraint

This is less of a problem in the second row, since the head restraints sit relatively flush with the seat, particularly in the center position.

However, the third-row head restraints are extremely bulky when they’re not removed for a car seat or booster installation.

Can You Use Lower Anchors and the Seat Belt Together in the Atlas?

Another common question is whether the lower anchors and seat belt can be used together if the car seat permits it.

Yes. If the car seat permits using both lower anchors and the seat belt, VW also permits it.

At the time of this writing, the only car seats that permit this are:

Great car for kids in car seats! So much room in the trunk even with the 3rd row up…. More than my previous vehicle, the 2015 Tahoe! If this car had ceiling vents in the 2nd row, it would be almost perfect! The apple car play is a little clunky when I have my phone plugged in, for some reason it doesn’t want to recognize the apple car play until lots of buttons are clicked to reset it. Great vehicle so far!

Something needs to be said about the brakes on this new year. I’m being told that they are “eco-friendly” and rear brakes have worn out after less than 25k I love the car overall but I think this year may be the lemon. The drive shift will frequently freeze up and at times the main screen will “red out”. Front calibers and brakes have also had to be replaced with this last balance and rotate at 21k.

As a mom of 2, I absolutely love this car! I got it with the possibility of having 3 kids in the future and wanted to be able to do 3 across in the second row if need be. Currently, I have an 11 year old not in a car seat and a 2 year old in an Evenflo Revolve 360 Extend and they both fit perfectly fine. I have had all 7 seats filled; 6 adults and my toddler in her car seat and we fit comfortably. This is our main family car and all 4 of us fit well. I think for 3 kids this car would also work well, especially with the right car seats. My only complaint is that sometimes the tech is a little glitchy, but I’ve only had an issue 1 time and it resolved itself. Overall, this is a great mom car! I have the Peak Edition so it’s lore sporty and I love the look of her!

With 2 kids, I primarily have third row down to extend the massive trunk space but love it to not need to remove car seats for occasional additional passengers. Also second row is much more spacious than my previous Tiguan and I can sit between my kids much more comfortably when needed.

I purchased the Atlas when I found myself with two under two and our Jeep Grand Cherokee was just not comfortable for a driver or passenger over 5’3”. The Car Mom is what led me to the Atlas given how wide it is in the second row with the ability to fit three car seats, as well as the size of the third row and still leaving ample trunk space. It truly is as big as described. With two toddler/rear-facing car seats, an adult can still sit comfortably in the middle seat. The front is extremely roomy with a dreamy center console. While we haven’t used the third row, the sales guy at the dealership got back there himself to show how comfortably he could sit (and he was 6’ tall). With the third seat folded down, I can keep my double stroller back there with still SO much room. With the third seat up, a stroller can still easily fit. My one qualm is the technology. The CarPlay seems to drop A LOT. And when it drops, it typically cannot be reconnected unless the car is fully off (for at least a few minutes). There have been instances where it dropping makes the entire audio go out - radio, etc. It may be a simple software update but it’s quite frustrating. I would also say the overall screen dashboard / controls of the car are not user-friendly. 10/10 times, a new passenger cannot figure out how to get to the climate control. Small things to pick up on, although the audio / CarPlay dropping a lot is frustrating. Would def recommend the Atlas though for a mom with 2-3 kids, potentially even more if you can afford having a constant third row up. It’s large enough and sleek. I commonly mistake them on the road for the Audi Q7.

I just got the 2026 Atlas SEL Premium R-Line about a month ago, love the design and space. It definitely is a great family car space wise but the infotainment system is awful. In less than one month I've gone to the service department twice because the car would not connect to the app/online services and all the safety features because the SOS module was off. While driving the screen goes black and resets, can't connect my phone to carplay and can't see the cameras. I guess I got carried away in getting the Atlas since I loved my 2024 Tiguan so much, but Im already disappointed because of the technology issues.

This vehicle has been in the shop countless times. This last time in July 2026 was for 2 speed sensor which I would lose power steering from randomly. The local dealership has no openings for over a month just to diagnose the vehicle. Funny thing is that only a Volkswagen dealership is able to fix a speed sensor on Atlas. This vehicle only has 36,000 miles.

Great for three across - can put my two car seats next to each other on the bench and comfortably ride with them in back on road trips! Lots of storage. Still pretty but very practical. Kind of big to drive.

A perfect family vehicle for daily life, road trips, sports events. Love the ability to have the 3rd row when needed for family and friends. Comfortable, stylish and simple design (ages well). Some reliability issues with at least 2 major issues (PVC valve failure, screen blacked out) that were covered by warranty but nonetheless were extremely frustrating to deal with. Extremely squeaky brakes that dealer and independents both assure us are fine still, but concern us. Wireless charger and wave tail gate almost never worked. Love the third row space, the car seat tilt, the built in shades. Elite cup holders and spacious center console. Wish it had ceiling vents in second row. Bummer that SEL version doesn’t have air conditioned seats. Can’t beat this price though for this size of vehicle.

I bought this car shortly after my first child was born. I didn’t realize it at the time but after watching Kelly’s videos I have been able to keep it through all 3 of my kids! We are 3 across with car seats in the bench and love it. The back with the seats down is like a truck bed and we have taken many long trips comfortably in it! We also love the look of the exterior and like to wave at other Atlases when they pass by!

Love that our Atlas can fit many car seat combinations 3 across in the second row. We currently have a high back booster, forward facing 5pt harness, and an infant bucket seat. Everyone has the space they need. The third row is easily accessible without disturbing car seats for the occasional carpool or guest situation. We have so much cargo space. Can easily pack for a long weekend with multiple suitcases, a stroller, and dog kennel. Atlas does a few funky things like some times the safety brakes are a little over excitable. This also feels huge and is still somewhat difficult for me to manage, but I am used to driving a smaller SUV.

Love my VW Atlas but it does come with some down sides that I was unaware of when I bought. When the car battery dies and it’s time for a new one you have no choice but to go straight to the dealership buy the battery and have them install it due to the fact that they have to program the battery to the alternator. I never knew this was even a thing, but to my surprise it’s common in BMW, Mazda, and some others. Looking into other maintenance such as brakes you are also handcuffed to the dealership due to the technology in the braking system, the list goes on. If you have a husband like mine who would rather change the battery or brakes himself just know this one will be a big shock when it comes time. The vehicle itself is so spacious and comfortable, looks great on the outside! The car handles very well as for its power. The technology isn’t the best with it always glitching and the start/stop system is just absolutely horrible. So far it’s been a great car and I do love it but I’m not sure we will hang onto it much longer due to the maintenance always having to go through the dealer. $$

Drove this car with 2 and then 3 kids for five years. Loved her so much!! She is cute and sporty and super comfortable for a mid size. Never had any issues whatsoever with tech or reliability of the car. It was easy to maintain and fun to drive. Only reason we swapped out of the Atlas was because we had a fourth baby and the third row and trunk space with four kids just wasn’t going to be enough for our family. My (and everyone else’s) biggest issue with the Atlas is no ceiling vents. Such a miss! But really was only ever an issue for my child sitting in the third row. Really did love the Atlas and would absolutely recommend to families with 1-3 kids!

Our Volkswagen Atlas served its purpose. We had 3 rear facing car seats for a long time and this car is a car seat beast. The flexibility it provided our family was unmatched in my opinion. Amazing trunk space when both the 3rd row is down and up, easy access to the 3rd row with car seat tilt. We really used it to its full potential in terms of car seat configuration and space taking it on multiple 12+ hour road trips. NOW, where this car falls short in my opinion was in reliability. Within the 3 years we had it we had problems with EPC light, acceleration issues, cracked coolant housing, sos button. In addition to this, the leather console was cracking, tears at the seam on seats, cracked mirror trim pieces etc. If you are in the mid size market and want something that can haul a bunch on kids with ease and space then it’s a great option for you, just keep in mind reliability scores etc.

I absolutely love the exterior look of my VW atlas. I love the acceleration, smooth overall drive, low road noise. If I could make changes, I would include better cup holders, and fix the wonky technology glitches that often occur. I also have concerns over the emergency brake being engagedby the car often when pulling out of my garage. It is very startling and cant be good for hte breaks.

This is an excellent family car. I wish we had more seriously considered a bench for the second row, but I do love the car we purchased. We have captain seats in the second row and have a Nuna for my 5yo and a Britax for my 18m.

I leased a 2021 Atlas and got a 2024 lease and the interior styling of the car feels very luxurious and more spacious (especially in the front) than the previous model. Fits my kids (2) and the things we need to carry in our lives very easily, and it feels very sturdy to drive even in bad weather. Would highly recommend this car! I have loved this car and am planning to purchase at the end of my lease.

I freaking love my Volkswagen Atlas. It’s perfect for my family - we plan to grow our family and likely will have a 3rd child at some point and I know we’ll have plenty of room still. We got the bench for the second row and we’ve have a few different combos of 3 across car seats in the third row when we’ve had friends or family visiting and all want to take the same car. This thing is a beast and I feel so cool driving it. I’m just not a minivan girlie. But damn do I feel like a cool mom in my Atlas!

SE w/Tech R-Line V6 4MOTION. She's almost perfect! I have had my atlas for a few years now and have very few complaints. I have four kids in car seats and this car handles it well. Very comfortable for everyday and road trips. I get about 16 mpg with mostly city driving. We have three Clek Foonfs and one UppaBaby Alta, my husband is 6'1", always have my full size UppaBaby stroller in the trunk, and I think we fit well. I think my only complaints are that it doesn't have wireless carplay, no ceiling vents, no lower anchors in third row, the shifting can be rougher sometimes, the brakes squeak often after using the parking break, the infotainment system glitches occasionally, I recently had to have the EVAP canister replaced (under warranty), often have to turn the Start/Stop system off because it can be aggressive and I feel like it wastes gas more than it saves it. But there's so much more good than bad. Very comfortable drive, reliable, yearly maintenance isn't bad, insurance isn't bad, handles my life well, I truly love this car and plan to run it into the ground. If you have multiple kids, multiple car seats, don't want a full size, this car is definitely worth a look.

The Atlas was perfect for 1-2 kids plus two large dogs. The sunshades were so nice, the third row had great space, and I still had a decent trunk. The electronic screen did occasionally have issues and there were some functions with only electronic buttons. Remote start and the app were hit or miss.

I have been very pleasantly surprised with the Atlas. It is very spacious for a midsized suv (I had only had a grand Cherokee, wrangler and bronco before). I have taken it on two cross country road trips and we easily fit myself, my infant in a rear facing seat, our two large Goldens, who go everywhere with us, and our luggage. The only complaint I have is the 2nd row does not have ceiling vents and we live in the south so I feel like the backseat can be warm. After only having more rugged SUVs I am pleasantly surprised how well this vehicle does on all terrains and the awd and standard tires on the peak edition handled well in poor weather. I am slightly worried about longevity of this car but for the price I paid for this vehicle I truly could not have asked for a better car. My dream car is a new sequoia but I was not ready to dump that money on a vehicle.

This was my dream car. I was so excited when I finally got it but within the first month the acceleration would cut out in the middle of driving. It has happen every so often, do not feel safe driving with my son in the car. Also the screen does go black and have to restart screen randomly as well.

We leased this car in 2024 based on Kelly’s rec. It has been a comfortable albeit glitchy vehicle that has easily grown with our family. My favorite feature is the spacious second row. We have the bench seat, and I can fit an infant rear-facing in the middle seat and a toddler rear-facing behind the passenger seat, while still sitting comfortably behind the driver’s seat myself. We usually keep the third row folded down for extra cargo space. On the rare occasions we’ve needed the third row, it’s difficult to access and set up. Pushing the second row all the way back to maximize legroom naturally squeezes third-row legroom, and the third-row headrests get caught on the tilted second row when trying to raise them. To use the third row, you have to move the second row all the way forward, manually pull up the third row, and then push the second row back again. The main drawback is the technology. While driving on the highway, the screens will occasionally shut off, and the second-row USB-C ports stopped working three months after we got the car. Apple CarPlay is also glitchy—the volume will randomly drop out completely during phone calls. The person on the other end can hear me, but I can't hear them at all. It has actually put me in some dangerous situations on the highway where my only option was to pull off into a safe area, turn off the car, wait about 10 minutes, restart my phone, and restart the car to reset everything. Given Volkswagen’s lower reliability scores, tech issues weren't a total surprise, but as low-mileage lease drivers, it was a risk we were comfortable taking. I have the R-Line trim and love how it looks inside, especially the tan leather and the fact that a bench seat was available in the top trim level. There are no ceiling vents, so the second row can get warm with rear-facing car seats, but pre-cooling the car via the VW app easily solves that. Overall, good choice, but potentially looking at other options for our next lease.

Love: -roomy 2nd row bench allows for 3 kids in booster/carseats, or 2 kids + an adult - car seat tilt on both sides of 2nd row - built in sun shades - 3rd row is very comfortable - decent trunk space - remote start is amazing in cold weather Not so great: - 3 recalls that I've had to schedule maintenance for - no ceiling vents in 2nd row - low tire pressure indicator doesn't tell you *which* tire is low

The SE model without the automatic trunk Is just baffling to me. How is a three row SUV, popular with families, charging people extra for an auto trunk?! Otherwise, I LOVE THIS CAR! We have the bench and love it. Trunk space for dayssssss. My husband is 6’1” and can easily sit in either of the front seats with rear facing car seats in the second row (Revv and Rava).

I absolutely love this car as a mom of 3 kids ages 6, 4, and 1. There is plenty of trunk space even with the third row in use and it does amazing with 3 across in the second row. My only gripes are that the screen can go fuzzy on occasion and sometimes it randomly shuts down but I know lots of cars have tech issues like this. I also wish it had ceiling vents in the back rows. I still wouldn’t switch for another car! It also fits great in smaller parking spots and garages but feels spacious inside. I love the sun shades too. Overall it’s perfect for me- no crazy frills like self-driving but I’m not really interested in that just yet. Highly recommend especially for the price.

I wanted an SUV that felt big enough to fit my 3 kids and I didn’t have the budget to go full-size, so after a lot of research I went with the Atlas. We have 3 across in the bench seat, and our kids are very comfortable back there. Before our third was born, an adult could comfortably fit in the middle seat of the second row. The third row feels very comfortable and spacious as well! Trunk space is great especially with the 3rd row down. We also own a Highlander but far and away prefer to drive our Atlas! My only complaint is the tech. My screen had some malfunctions that I later learned were common with the 24 Atlas, and so much is controlled on the screen that it was very challenging when it was out. Additionally, I have issues with Apple CarPlay connectivity from time to time but I’ve figured out the kinks. My wireless charger also does not work properly anymore. None of these things are deal breakers as the screen was fixed with a software update and I just don’t have a need to use the wireless charger - I plug it in! Overall, I feel both safety & comfortable driving the Atlas, and love that my family of 5 fits so well!

I bought the Atlas new and kept it for over 4 years. The technology didn’t work well at all. Most of the tech features that should make a moms life easier didn’t work (keyless entry, wave lift tailgate, etc). The infotainment center often just went black. The windows would go down whenever, even while driving it. The tailgate would get stuck trying to auto close a ton of times. Overall I grew to really dislike this car for the tech issues.

I love my car and purchased it because of the car mom! Recently though my radio died in the part is on a three month back order. My CarPlay does not currently work as well as my backup camera. Not sure if this is a one off glitch or if this is a common problem. This is the only issue I’ve had with it in the three years I have owned it. I love it. Otherwise, it is so spacious and compared next to my friend‘s Honda pilot, it’s a no-brainer, it’s so much nicer and so much more space. I feel like I would buy another one after this, just a little disappointed at the inconvenience of my radio being out currently.

I used to drive a BMW 3 Series and an X1. I really liked how those smaller cars handled, so I became pretty picky about a stable ride and a clean, simple interior. But when I had kids, I obviously needed something much bigger. I wanted a car that still felt chic and had that simple German engineering, but without the massive price tag of a huge luxury SUV. This Volkswagen Atlas completely checks the boxes. It is so comfortable, handles beautifully for its size, and honestly, whenever someone new gets into my car, they always compliment it. Even my mom loves it—she wants to buy one for herself now, even though she has absolutely no use for a giant 3-row vehicle!Since I only have two kids, I keep the third row folded down almost all the time, and the trunk space is awesome. It easily swallows everything we throw at it, from sports gear and packed bags for lake days to family vacations and our two dogs.Best of all, it has been so reliable. I am currently at 60,000 miles and have had zero issues. I just replaced the battery this week, which is totally normal wear-and-tear for this mileage, but otherwise, it has been perfect. I love it so much that whenever it’s time for an upgrade, I am definitely just going to get another Atlas.

When it was time for a new car, I looked at Kelly’s page for her favorites. I had not paid attention to the Atlas but put it on the list I was coming from a 2 row SUV but wanted something bigger for having cousins around. My husband is tall so having decent leg room in the back was important for when the kids grow up. The Atlas drive smoothly. I still find it a bit big to get right in parking spots on the first try. We’ve taken it on a couple of road trips and enjoyed the space. Kids are comfortable in the second row. Third row isn’t quite as comfortable as the second row but it’s better than my parents’ Lexus GX. Happy with the purchase!

I cannot recommend this car. Although it is structurally sound, it is an electronic nightmare. Starting at 7000 miles, it started throwing errors and glitching. The screen would turn off and on. Factory settings would reset. The main computer of the car was replaced three times with no fix. The car would randomly turn on and play music when the doors were locked and no keys were inside. We are currently in the process of the lemon law and awaiting a check from VW. The saving grace is that they almost always approve the lemon law and the process was very easy.

I got an Atlas based on Kelly’s review of it years ago. I absolutely love it. It has just the right amount of tech for me - still has knobs for temperature control, volume, etc. not an overly complicated steering wheel. I have the captain chairs in the second row. Definitely love this set up for two kids. Will have to move my oldest to the 3rd row when we have another kid, but for now it’s perfect! We do a couple big trips a year with a family of 4 + a dog and it’s a very comfortable ride! It drives great - I really haven’t had any issues with the car! My only complaint is there are no ceiling vents in the 2nd row. Maybe something Kelly mentioned in her earlier reviews, but not something I was paying attention to when we got this (pre-kids!) Overall, 10/10 recommend. I have told several friends with kids to get this car and they also love it!!

I love my Atlas! I’m 36 and have owned all VWs (Jetta for 6 years, Passat for 10 years, and Atlas for 1 year) - and I have never had any serious issues! The Atlas is by far my favorite though - beautiful, smooth ride, easy tech, and has more than enough space!

We had our Atlas for 2.5 years and really loved it! We had the bench seat which was so clutch when we brought our second kiddo home because I could very easily sit between them in the middle seat for long rides. I will say we rarely used the 3rd row because with 2 RF kids, access was extremely tough through the trunk. Loved the look of the car and the solid feel. Also it drove like more of a car (very smooth and didn’t feel as big as it is on the road), which was nice since this was our first 3rd row vehicle. It had some janky tech things but that’s VW for you lol. No major issues in the 2.5 years we owned it!

This is my second Atlas. I had a 2022 with captains chairs that I bought when I was pregnant with my 3rd baby. A few years later when we were having our 4th we decided to buy a new Atlas with a bench. We knew we loved the Atlas and weren’t quite ready to go for something as big as the expedition or other full size SUVs. At first I thought Kelly did me dirty with the bench recommendation. She is a big fan of the bench and I knew that having an extra seat would be beneficial now that we would have 4 kids. At first, we all hated it! It was a little bit of an adjustment where the kids in the back couldn’t get out as easily without having to tilt one of the seats to exit. I thought we made a huge mistake in trading in our captains chair Atlas for the bench seat. Now that my 4th baby is here, I can honestly say it was the BEST decision. We have used the extra seat enough that it was definitely worth it. My two older kids need to be able to get out of the car on the passenger side at school drop off. I bought the Joie mint latch car seat and put my baby in the middle seat when we do pick up/drop offs. Then my two big kids in the back can easily hop out of the car from the 3rd row without any other kids being in the way. Overall, love the vehicle. This being our second Atlas, we have had no issues with maintenance/repairs other than basic oil changes/regular maintenance. Highly recommend and if you have 4 kids and don’t want to have to make the switch to a minivan or a full size SUV, this is a great option!

We love this car for the space and comfort and a very nice upgrade from an older suv (2015 CX5). It performs great as a family hauler and we frequently take this on 7+ hour road trips in Western Canada. We went against the CarMom and did Captains Chairs - turns out the Captains chairs work great for us as the dog sleeps on the floor between the chairs. Unfortunately it needed a new transmission & heater core at only 6000km (3700miles) and no lemon laws in Canada. After the car being back at the dealership for 2.5months while repairs were being made we are not trusting the long term reliability of this vehicle unfortunately. We have only had the car for 14months and since its repairs have had no further issues. But the repairs have definitely affected our trade in value unfortunately and we did have very poor customer service from VW Canada.

This is a great car for families. With two kids and a large dog joining our family soon, we needed something with plenty of space for everyone. It’s roomy enough for carpools to kids’ sports and family road trips, with enough cargo space that we don’t have to add a cargo box. It’s been a great fit for our family and gives us the flexibility we were looking for.

Love this car as a family of 4 plus a standard Goldendoodle. We put our dog in the third row (plenty of room for him - 70 lbs), have our toddler in front facing and infant in rear facing in second row. Roomy enough for a grandparent to sit in the middle of our bench seat. We can fit stroller and bags in the trunk (with dog) by folding one side of the third row down. My only qualm is the tech stack can sometimes glitch. We use Apple car play so it doesn’t matter quite as much. Overall, highly recommend!

The trunk space is the best! You can fit a 6 month old highland cow although they poop a lot and I wouldn't highly recommend. The 1 month old in a kennel was better. Also can barely fit 2 dog kennels for 50lb dogs and enough stuff for a long weekend ozarks trip with 2 adults and 2 kids. Only downside are no ceiling vents and I don't like the air conditioning being on the screen. I'd rather have knobs. My kids have enough space. I can fit 5 car seats for when we have friends with us. Third row is totally fine for adults. Drives great! Haven't had any issues. Love my car!

I have 4 kids- they were 12, 10, 8 and 5 when I got my Atlas. One in a booster and one in a carseat. I wanted to move to a SUV from my Honda Odyssey, but didn't want anything huge/full size. I absolutely love the Atlas- the outside, the interior (the woodgrain on the dash is my favorite part), and the fact that there is room for big kids in the back seat. My only downfall for the Atlas (if you have a big family) is that it's pushing it with 4 kids if you travel a lot. For day to day, it is absolutely perfect, but every time we go on a trip we wish we had something a little bigger! Overall, I still love my Atlas, and plan on keeping it until it's time for an upgrade in a few years!

If you are a car mom follower we all know the wonderful things about the Atlas! I absolutely love almost everything about this vehicle. The 2nd row bench seat, car seat friendly tilt, space, and versatility. As a mom of three (ages 3-8), the atlas has been an ideal car for our family without having to jump into the full sized market. We have used 3 Graco Slimfit 3 LX for 3 across and my children had plenty of space! My critiques: I would love automatic brights, the trunk button on the driver side door took me a bit to understand (you must hold the button in order to close from the driver seat), the 2nd row vents- come on!!, and then my final change I would make would be a digital review mirror. With a high backed booster in the middle seat or other car seats, a digital rear view mirror would make a great addition to safety and visibility with kids in tow.

I got my Atlas 11 months ago and have loved it! I bought it after owning a minivan and was nervous about how I would feel about the space difference in the interior. I have been very pleased with the space inside - it works perfectly day-to-day for our family of 5 (6 yrs and older) and a dog. For travel we use a car top carrier when needed. The Apple Carplay is so nice and love the technology/functionality as a driver. We have the captains chairs in the second row and love that. I do wish we had 3 seats in the 3rd row to give us a little more flexibility when driving friends, etc. Very pleased with the amount of leg space in all three rows and the car is pretty wide so that gives a lot of room as well. My only complaint is I wish there were more cup holders in the first row and cup holder options for the second row outside of the ones in the door. The trunk space is amazing. We almost always have our third row up and I have plenty of room! Also LOVE the compartments on either side of the trunk for a watermelon, my reusable grocery bags, etc.

I love my atlas and knew from Kelly’s reviews that I would be buying this car years before I actually needed it. I bought this when pregnant with my third- when 37 weeks my husband, 2 kids and I were hit head on - the atlas kept us all safe. It performed exactly as it should have and I am eternally grateful that my kids and baby were OK. The car was totaled and I immediately went to the same salesman and bought another of the same car but in the pike trim level. I now have a 5 year old, 3 year old and 10 month old all across the bench seat in the middle row and leave the third row down for the extra trunk space. Having that extra space to safely store our beach stuff, etc has been amazing. I’ve had adults in the 3rd row as well and it’s tight for leg room but still comfortable!

Love love love my atlas! This is my third one, and I have a hard time imagining I will drive anything else. It’s extremely roomy, it seems that it’s much wider than others in its class. My friends always comment on how it feels so much bigger than their comparable cars like (jeep/traverse) My one girlfriend who drives a Escalade said it felt roomier than her car. Ha! I also love the bench seat/third row options. My kids mostly ride three across so I have the back down and a huge trunk.. and when we carpool I just pop the seats up and bam! Seven seater just like that..! I have very little negative things to say, only that the Apple car play connection can be wonky at times and my car hates my husband bc it always glitches for him. The only other things I don’t like is the newer models got rid of the sunglass storage overhead. & my car doesn’t have auto hold! I don’t need the forward facing camera per se bc the sensors and images are straight forward… but I would take it if I had the option! All over a wonderful car… a lot of car for midsize and affordable. Leasing from VW is also superior then leasing from Ford!!

This has been the perfect car for our currently family age and size (kids 6, 4, and 2 — and we have driven it for 2 years). It works well to have three across the bench, for an extra spacious trunk (seriously, huge), and it also works well to have one kid in the back, with some extra breathing room in the second row for everyday use. The car seat tilt is helpful, though the kid in the back typically ends up climbing over the seat or through the trunk. We have used and love Diono car seats in this car. (When I had an infant, we had two Diono + a DOONA, and fit comfortably three across. For reference, this combination did NOT work three across for many other mid-size SUV’s we test drove). The interior is good quality, but some is made with a lot of plastic (some small accessory pieces have broken). The leatherette has held up well, and we have pushed it to its limit with embedded crumbs, spilled drinks, etc. Since we have owned the car, we have had to replace the fuel pump (at about 90k miles). This car is extremely comfortable, and a perfect fit for a family of three small children.

Amazing car seat tilt option made getting into third row easy with two rear facing kiddos. Didn’t love that the vents did not come from ceiling however didn’t feel like it took too long to cool down a black car in peak summer heat. The AWD drove amazing in snow and adaptive windshield wipers were nice perks. For being “top” package, didnt have lumbar control, but nice heated/cooled seats in front and heated seats in second row (didn’t really use that since two car seats). Could fit family if 4 easily and had a tailgate hitch attachment for longer drives for luggage (6 hour drives) and never felt like it was too small of a space!

I love the VW Atlas! The updates that they made are great. I previously drove a 2018 Atlas for 7 years. Cup holders are great. Lots of cubby storage. Fits HOCKEY bags!! I love how it drives. The updated lane assist can be annoying - it’s very sensitive and will beep if you aren’t driving in the center of the lane. It can be shut off but then you don’t get lane assist. So mine is on! Overall great car for families! I bought one 2x!

I love this car as a family of 5 with 3 young kids! I have enjoyed the flexibility of the placements/seats I can use for car seat configuration. The vehicle is very reliable with no issues!

Very easy to maneuver, easy for the kids to get in and out. Does not handle hitting curbs as well as a large SUV, so prepare yourself if you have that tendency. Oops!

I loved this car looking to buy, it drove great was at an affordable price and spacious. I didn't love all the engine issues VW had seem to have with my past cars so as much as I wanted to buy the car because it check off my boxes and had Captain Chairs I held off.

I LOVE this car. I got it with the bench so I can have all three of my daughters in the 2nd row. It has fit three across with all different types of car seats (Evenflo Shyft/Doona, two convertible car seats, etc.). We often travel to my in laws four hours away. We can have all three kids, our 120 pound dog and our luggage and can fit comfortably. I have influenced 4 moms to get an Atlas because of how much I love it.

We love our VW Atlas! Cup holders are great. When we had our 3rd in June it was easy to move out lit oldest to the back and I can easily access her to help buckling if needed with the car seat tilt. Trunk space is great, we can fit our double vista in the back and pack for a weekend at the cabin. We’ll likely add a roof rack for longer trips eventually. Overall, it’s a great car!

We absolutely love our VW Atlas! The space is one of the biggest reasons we chose it, and it has been great for our family. We have two kids and two dogs, and there is still plenty of room for everyone. We have two large rotating car seats in the second row, and both the front and second-row passengers still have plenty of legroom. We’ve even taken it on a 12-hour road trip with both kids, and the space made a huge difference. With the third row folded down, the trunk is incredibly spacious and gives us plenty of room for luggage, strollers, groceries, and everything else that comes with traveling with kids. Reliability has also been great for us. We keep up with regular maintenance and have had no issues, which has given us a lot of confidence in the vehicle. My only real complaint is the technology. Every once in a while, the screen will randomly shut off and I have to restart it, which can be frustrating. Aside from that, we have been extremely happy with our Atlas and would absolutely consider getting another one in the future.

Upgraded from a small sedan and this handles rain/snow conditions incredibly well which was necessary for our rural driveway. Have fit three across frequently but typically drive with two Graco 4Ever DLX on outboard seats leaving plenty of room for adult passenger in middle seat. Great cup holder access in front seats including in doors- fit large width bottles well. Love the motorized sunroof shade and second row window shades. Third row pretty accessible with car seat tilt and large trunk space with third row down. After being concerned about reliability as a new car model, it has only had minor recalls which were easy fixes. My gymnast daughter has really started appreciating the second row heated/ventilated after practice seats now that she’s in a backless booster! This trim has larger tires so that was quite an expense to replace. Love the remote options in the app as we just sold a house and frequently had to drive around to kids sports with three dogs loaded for showings. Gave me peace of mind knowing they were nice and cool by seeing it was running in the app. See first photo 🐶

A great option for someone who is resistant to go into a minivan 😅 fantastic head, shoulder and leg room! 3rd row comfortable enough for 2 adults! With the 3rd row down, the trunk is very spacious, great for road trips and Costco runs 😅 Super easy to drive and park, especially compared to a full-sized SUV. Very practical car that feels super cool too 😎

We leased this car and really enjoyed the space and look of the Atlas. Its a beautiful car and it drives great. What we didn’t enjoy was that the carplay feature kept malfunctioning and sometimes the screen would turn off for a few seconds and restart. I am not sure that I would purchase this vehicle but as a lease we really loved it. Had 2 rear facing car seats for a year and now we have our front facing son in the third row which he enjoyed and a rear facing car seats for our youngest in the captain chairs. We left a captain chair available for grandparent because the third row isn’t as comfortable and with the Texas heat we felt it took a long time to get cool in the very back.

I love this car. It has great leg room in the second row. With the third row down, the trunk space is huge. I like that I will be able to fit three car seats across the bench seat and still have the third row down to maintain large trunk space. If I want to use the third row I can access it with the car seat tilt so forward facing car seats can remain installed in the outboard seat. My issues with the car is it isn’t the smoothest ride. I’m used to driving an Audi which you can feel the difference in the drive. I also wish there were physical buttons for climate control. And the infotainment center can be glitchy and need to reboot in the middle of driving which is very annoying. I’ve tried to have this serviced but the dealership was unsuccessful with fixing it, so I’m hoping the next system update will clear the bug. I also feel like the climate control isn’t the best, don’t love the positioning of the vents.

I love the way my Atlas looks and feels! It’s comfortable, spacious and has a luxurious feel without being the highest end vehicle. The AC has been great during the hot AZ summer as well as the bonus window shades that are included in the 2nd row doors. It has a lot of fancy tech which is super fun including ambient lighting that can be personalized. It’s already been perfect for our family of 4. We are looking forward to many road trips and being able to transport a couple additional passengers as our kids get older.

We moved up from a Tiguan once we had our second daughter, and we are so obsessed with this car. I’d give it a 5 star review if we didn’t have so many issues with the technology. I live in AZ, so the remote start was a huge sell for me and it is not reliable AT ALL. We have a ton of issues with the car okay, and overall just feels like things glitch out more than they should. With that being said, I still love this card despite the issues and am obsessed with the Peak edition and how sporty it looks.

As a mom of two under 3 and a 50-lb dog, the space in the Atlas has been a huge plus for our family. I love how it drives — it’s comfortable, smooth, and easy to handle for a 3-row SUV. The second-row space is excellent for car seats, and I especially love how wide the doors open, making it so much easier to get the kids in and out. The 3rd row is surprisingly comfortable, and with it folded down, the trunk space is HUGE — plenty of room for our stroller, dog, groceries, and everything else that comes with little kids. We’ve also had some frustrating issues, including multiple infotainment screen problems, a horn fuse issue, and sunroof touch sensors that needed to be replaced. I also wish the infotainment buttons were illuminated, especially for nighttime driving. Overall, despite the issues, I’ve really enjoyed the Atlas. We’re currently leasing it and are actually considering buying it out because the size, space, comfort, and practicality work so well for our family. As a daily driver, it checks a lot of boxes for me.

The atlas was on my short list when purchasing a new suv. I liked the space and the drive, I liked that it had quite a lot of features on the lower model. I also liked that it had two more comfortable seats in the back, instead of trying to squeeze in a third seat that isn’t functional. The things that held me back from purchasing was a lack of ceiling vents in the back and the exterior, it looks like it has for a long time. I was also concerned about the long term reliability as I feel like Volkswagen has mixed reviews. I ended up purchasing a traverse.

Within a month of owning this car, it was in the shop getting the engine replaced. This summer the windshield wipers started going hay wire and it had to go back into the shop to get a new part replaced. I'm also having issues with my key fob and some antenna and it'll need to go back into the shop for a 3rd time. I got a new car so that I didn't have to deal with this type of thing. But after less than 2 years of ownership, I'm more than ready to trade this car in.

I absolutely love the Atlas for my 2 kids. We have the bench and are planning on having a third soon. I will definitely be doing 3 across (currently have 1 FF and 1 RF). I thought The lack of ceiling vents would be too tough for my RF kids in central Florida but it cools so well and so fast. Remote start helps on extra warm days, but doesn’t always work. I do wish there were more buttons, which is why I can’t give 5 stars for tech. Not being able to adjust climate control easily and having to use the screen while driving is super frustrating. The wireless Apple car play also malfunctions every so often. I love everything else about it though. It’s a great fit for my family.

We are a small family but my husband is 6’5 and this is our main family car. We love that he can sit comfortably in the second row! We mainly keep the third row down for groceries, etc… but have used it a a few times when family was in town. I’m 5’5 and it is doable as long as it is a short distance!

The things I disliked about the Atlas far outnumber the things I liked. I sold this vehicle to CarMax after owning it just over a year. I drive a lot of miles every day so while these things can sound small to some people, they were dealbreakers for me and my driving needs. Pros: car seat tilt/easy 3rd row access, decent trunk with 3rd row up, 2nd and 3rd row comfort, built in sunshades Cons: not nearly enough buttons/too much screen technology therefore VERY distracting and unsafe while driving, piano black finishes were blinding when the sun was just right, no dipstick to check oil (can purchase after market), apple carplay very glitchy, no ceiling vents for 2nd row, VW maintenance/shop was never helpful or quick.

Wish we would’ve gotten a bench vs the captain chairs. When we got the car we had 2 kids so it was fine; when we had to start using the 3rd row we lost a lot of trunk space. Also really wish it would have ceiling vents in the 2nd & 3rd row and ventilated seats for the driver & passenger in front. The 3rd row also does not have lower anchors.

This car is everything I wanted in a “mom car!” Bench is wide enough for three across. I have had a variety of seats across the bench and never had an issue. My current set up is a Chicco MyFit in the middle with rear facing Chicco Fit3X seats on both sides of it. I have also had three rear facing in a Doona on the passenger side and two Graco SlimFit LX in the other seats. I’ve done a few other short-term combos but I’ve done long-term with both of these setups and it’s been great! The second row also has a lot of front-to-back space which is wonderful for rear facing seats. The second row is on tracks which is great if you have third row passengers and need more leg room. I love the built in sunshades and car seat tilt! The bench is a 60/40 split. I rarely need the third row but it is great to have when I do need it! I have put two forward facing car seats in the third row multiple times with no problems. I have plenty of trunk space with the third row down! Things I wish I had: Ventilated seats. I have the SEL trim. At the time I bought my Atlas, the trim level with ventilated seats was another $10k and it wasn’t worth it to me. Better cup holders in the second row. Better ventilation in the second row. Ceiling vents would be wonderful. The vents and climate control are on the console and my forward facing 6 year old in the middle seat is always kicking them. Issues I’ve had: The only issue I had was summer of 2025 after 4 years of owning it). I had an issue with the charcoal canister which led to an issue with my gas tank. It didn’t prevent me from driving it. I actually drove it with issues for a couple months before I even took it to the dealership. It would just sometimes turn off if I was driving really slowly (like backing out of a parking space). The fix was covered under warranty, thankfully. Overall, this car has been wonderful for the stage of life we are in. I bought it when I was pregnant with my second and I now have a 6, 5 and 3 year old.
