The 2026 Atlas is the last model year of this body style, and I wanted one more in-depth look before it goes, because there isn’t a more car seat friendly midsize SUV out there. It’s not the biggest in its class, but it makes the best use of its space of any of them. If you don’t want a full-size SUV but still need room for four or five kids in car seats, this is the one I’d point you to.
- Three-across bench on every trim: the second-row bench is available on all trim levels, and I fit two Graco SlimFit3 LXs and an Evenflo Revolve360 Slim side by side. You’ll likely need a slim seat in the middle, but the outboard seats can take just about anything.
- Lower anchors in all three second-row seats: every second-row position has lower anchors. Just know the center anchors overlap the outboard seat belt behind the driver, so plan your installs (more on that below).
- Top tethers in all five rear seats: every seat in the second and third rows has a top tether anchor.
- Car seat tilt on both sides, even with seats installed: the 60/40 bench tilts and slides forward for third-row access with a LATCH-installed car seat still in place. Because the center seat belt is built into the vehicle seat, my belt-installed middle seat tilted right along with it.
- Room to rotate in a three-across setup: I could still turn my Revolve360 Slim to buckle my kid in, and I don’t think any other midsize SUV can pull that off.
- Legroom for tall parents with rear-facing seats: at about 6 feet tall, I still had plenty of legroom with a bulky car seat behind me. This is one of my go-to picks for taller moms and dads.
- A third row with two seats that actually work: removable head restraints and great buckle access let me fit two wide seats back there, the Britax Grow With You and the Nuna AACE.
- A car that grows with your family: you could buy this when you’re pregnant with your first and still fit everyone at four or five kids.
The Exterior
The Last Model Year of This Body Style
The Atlas first came out in 2018, got a major refresh in 2024, and 2026 is the final year for this body style before the all-new 2027 Atlas arrives. If you love how this generation looks, this is your last chance to buy it new. (I covered the refreshed version in depth in my 2024 Volkswagen Atlas review.)
Not the Biggest Midsize SUV, but the Best Use of Space
The Atlas isn’t the largest SUV in its class. The Chevy Traverse, Honda Pilot, GMC Acadia, and even the Kia Telluride are a little bigger. But no one uses its space better, and that’s what makes it such a strong family car. For reference, the Atlas measures:
- 200.7 inches long
- 78.3 inches wide
- 70.4 inches high
- 6.3 inches of ground clearance
The Peak Edition Adds a Rugged Look
The Atlas I tested was the Peak Edition, which is just plain fun. Compared to other trims, it has:
- Silver underbody cladding and a gloss-black “X” across the lower front
- A blacked-out grille, mirror caps, window surround, and roof rails
- 18-inch glossy black wheels with all-terrain tires
- A standard panoramic sunroof
Lighting and Liftgate Features Families Will Notice
On every trim except the base SE, the Atlas has an illuminated lightbar and VW logo on both the front and back. SE with Technology trims and above also add a hands-free liftgate you can open with a kick under the rear bumper, which is a lifesaver when your arms are full of kids and groceries.
First Row
The cabin feels refined. The materials feel premium, the stitching looks elevated, and everything just feels thoughtful. The front row carries over from the 2024 refresh, with one new addition for 2026: an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink on SE with Technology trims and above.
Big Tech Upgrades Come Standard on Every 2026 Atlas
Every Atlas comes with:
- A 12-inch infotainment display
- A digital driver display
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Wireless charging
- USB-C ports throughout
- A bridge-style center console with added storage
The infotainment screen is dramatically improved over the pre-2024 Atlas. It looks modern and clean, almost like Apple CarPlay even when CarPlay isn’t active.
Heated and Ventilated Front Seats Are Standard on the Atlas
One of my favorite additions is that heated and ventilated front seats are standard across the whole Atlas lineup. That’s a huge win, and not something many manufacturers include without pushing you up a trim level.
Higher Trims Add a Head-Up Display, Ambient Lighting, and a Panoramic Sunroof
On higher trims, you’ll also find:
- A head-up display
- Customizable ambient lighting (every color of the rainbow)
- A panoramic sunroof
The ambient lighting package is genuinely fun. It runs through the dash and doors and adds a level of personality the Atlas was missing before.
A Stanley Fits in the Door Cubby
Volkswagen absolutely understands American cup culture. You can fit a Stanley in the door cubby, and that alone deserves applause.
Second Row
There isn’t a more car seat friendly second row in a midsize SUV than the one in the Atlas. You can choose a three-seat bench (available on every trim) or captain’s chairs (available on SE with Technology and above), and both have car seat tilt. But the bench is where the Atlas really shines, and it’s the setup I tested.
Lower Anchors and Top Tethers in All Three Atlas Bench Seats
Every second-row seating position has:
- A set of lower anchors
- A top tether anchor
- A removable head restraint
The head restraints sit relatively flush with the seat, especially in the center, so they rarely get in the way of a car seat or booster.
The Center Lower Anchors Overlap the Seat Belt Behind the Driver
The center seat’s lower anchors overlap with the outboard seat belt behind the driver. That means if you use the center lower anchors, you can’t use the seat belt behind the driver at the same time. For the center seat and the seat behind the driver, plan on either two seat belt installs or two lower anchor installs.
The Center Seat Needs a Narrow, Belt-Installed Car Seat
The center buckle and the buckle next to it are very close together. Most car seats are too wide to install in the middle without resting on that buckle, which can damage it. You can contact VW for a buckle cover if you want a wider seat in the center, but the cover makes the outboard buckle unusable.
So if you want three across with the outboard seats installed with the seat belt (which is usually what you’ll need), your center car seat should be:
- Very narrow
- Installed with the seat belt
This is where the Graco SlimFit3 LX shines. Other narrow seats can work here too, but nothing is as versatile.
Three Across in the VW Atlas
Bench seats are not created equal. There are plenty of cars where I’d tell you to skip the bench because it’s not three-across friendly or causes more problems than it solves. The Atlas is the exception. I honestly don’t know if I could have designed this bench better myself.
My three-across setup was two Graco SlimFit3 LXs and an Evenflo Revolve360 Slim, all installed with the seat belt because that gave me a little more room than lower anchors. But so many combinations will work here. The outboard seats are wide enough for just about any car seat, a booster, or even an adult. It’s not quite as wide as an Expedition or Suburban, where you could put any seats back there, but if you’re shopping for an Atlas, you may only need to buy one new slim seat instead of three. (If you’re still deciding, here are the cars that fit three car seats across.)
A Rotating Seat Still Turns in a Three-Across Setup
Yes, I could actually rotate my Revolve360 Slim with two other seats next to it. I couldn’t do the full rotation in one direction, but I could still turn it enough to buckle my child in, and I could rotate it the full 360 the other way. Having that kind of versatility three across in a car this size is something I don’t think any other midsize SUV can do. (Here are my favorite rotating car seats if you’re considering one.)
Atlas Car Seat Tilt Works on Both Sides with a Seat Installed
The star of the show is car seat tilt, and it’s available on both sides of the 60/40 split bench. The 40% side is behind the passenger, and the center seat and the seat behind the driver share the 60% side. When you tilt the 60% side, the whole section tilts and slides forward, car seat and all.
Car seat tilt is meant for car seats installed with lower anchors. But the center seat belt is attached to the vehicle seat itself, so I could still tilt that side with my belt-installed center seat in place. The result is a really good path to the third row, from either side.
Recessed Buckles Make Boosters Tough for Younger Kids
The second-row buckles are recessed and rigid, and they’re very hard for booster kids to use, especially younger ones. My advice is to not rush into a booster in this vehicle. If your child has outgrown their car seat by harness height, look at something like the Chicco MyFit, which has a 54-inch harness height. My 7-year-old is in the 90th percentile and can still be harnessed in it. I wouldn’t be harnessing him because it’s safer. I’d be harnessing him because it’s more convenient than having him fumble through that buckle, especially three across.
Room for Tall Parents Behind Rear-Facing Seats
I’m about 6 feet tall, and I had so much legroom back here. That’s great for adult passengers and big, bulky car seats, and it’s a game changer for tall parents who will have kids rear-facing behind them. The Atlas is one of my go-to recommendations for taller moms and dads.
If you plan to use the second and third rows at the same time, I recommend a compact car seat in the second row to preserve third-row legroom, like:
Rear Vents, USB-C, and Sunshades, but No Ceiling Vents
Second-row amenities include:
- Vents on the back of the center console
- Two USB-C ports
- Built-in sunshades (SE with Technology and above)
The one thing the Atlas is missing is ceiling vents. That’s a huge miss, and I’ve already seen the 2027, so I can tell you they’re not coming next year either.
Third Row
Two Full-Size Third-Row Seats in the Atlas
So many midsize SUVs fight to fit three seats in the third row. The Atlas went the other way and put in two really good ones, and it was an excellent decision. That choice gives you two great installs and two comfortable seats that can fit adults, kids in boosters, or kids in car seats.
I had two very wide seats back here, the Britax Grow With You and the Nuna AACE. Those aren’t seats I’d normally put in a third row, but the seats are so wide and the buckles are so easy to reach that they worked. Even a booster kid can get to their buckle on their own.
Top Tethers in Both Atlas Third-Row Seats, but No Lower Anchors
Both third-row seats have a top tether anchor and a removable head restraint, which really helps with car seat and booster compatibility. There are no lower anchors back here, though, which matters for some boosters. I cover what that means for your installs in Car Seat Setup below.
Atlas Third-Row Legroom Depends on Your Second-Row Car Seat
Even with the second row slid all the way back, I think there’s really great legroom back here. But a low-profile car seat in the second row makes a big difference. A convertible seat that sits higher off the ground, combined with the angle of the second-row seatback, will leave your third-row kids a little tighter on legroom. With a low-profile seat, there’s plenty of legroom for the second row, the third row, and the driver. This is what I mean when I say the Atlas uses its space so well.
How to Reach the Atlas Third Row with Car Seats Installed
Car seat tilt on either side of the second row moves the seat up and forward without uninstalling a car seat installed with lower anchors, so getting back here doesn’t mean undoing your second-row setup.
Side Vents and Cup Holders on Both Sides
Third-row amenities are pretty good. The vents are on the side pillars instead of down on the floor, which is actually better placement, and there are cup holders on both sides.
Trunk
How Much Cargo Space Is in the 2026 Atlas?
With the third row up, the Atlas has 20.6 cubic feet of cargo space. That’s a great size trunk for the size of the car, about the same as the Kia Telluride and only behind the Chevy Traverse and GMC Acadia in the midsize category.
Fold the seats down and it opens up fast:
- Third row up: 20.6 cu ft
- Third row folded: 55.5 cu ft
- Second and third rows folded: 96.6 cu ft
A Double Stroller Fits with the Atlas Third Row Up
You can fit a double stroller back here (with some maneuvering), plus groceries. There’s extra storage underneath the floor and cubbies on the sides, which are perfect for a gallon of milk or a watermelon. It’s also a handy spot to stash the third-row head restraints when you remove them for car seats.
The Atlas Third Row Folds Flat in Seconds
The seats are very easy to lay flat. They’re manual, quick, and simple, with no waiting on slow power-fold mechanisms. On SE with Technology trims and above, you also get a hands-free liftgate.
A Workhorse That Grows with Your Family
You know what she is? She’s a workhorse. She just gets it done. I always tell first-time moms to delay their car purchase, because you don’t know what your family is going to look like. You could have one kid, four kids, or surprise twins. The Atlas is one of those rare cars you could buy when you’re pregnant with your first and still fit everyone at four or five kids. I have four kids, seven and under, and we could easily all fit in this car.
Safety
The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas Earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick
The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas earned a 2026 TOP SAFETY PICK award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It received the top rating of “Good” in the small overlap front, updated moderate overlap front, and updated side crash tests.
Rear Seat Belt Pretensioners Are New for the 2026 Atlas
You have pretensioners in both second-row outboard seats, and it’s an IIHS Top Safety Pick, which is very hard to do. When the IIHS redesigned how they do their Top Safety Pick program, so much of the score came down to what happened in the second row. Because of those second-row pretensioners, the Atlas performed a lot better in the crash test, which is one of the reasons why it’s a Top Safety Pick, and one of the reasons why it’s such a good car for families.
Standard Driver Assistance Features on Every Atlas Trim
Every 2026 Atlas comes standard with Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE suite, which includes:
- Front Assist (Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring)
- Travel Assist (semi-automated hands-on driving assistance)
- Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go
- Active Side Assist (Blind Spot Monitor)
- Rear Traffic Alert
- Lane Assist (Lane Keeping System)
- Emergency Assist (can slow the vehicle to a stop if the driver becomes unresponsive)
Every Atlas also includes Exit Warning, Light Assist (automatic high beams), Automatic Post-Collision Braking, a rearview camera, and six airbags.
Available Safety Features on Higher Atlas Trims
- Park Distance Control (SE with Technology and above)
- Head-up display and Dynamic Road Sign Display (SEL and above)
- Park Assist and Area View overhead camera (SEL Premium R-Line)
Don’t want a full-size SUV, but still need to fit 4–5 kids in car seats? The Atlas is the car that can fit everyone practically and comfortably.
Atlas Second Row: Bench Seat or Captain’s Chairs
The second row offers either a bench seat or captain’s chairs, and both have car-seat-friendly tilt. The Atlas bench is arguably the best in any midsize SUV for three-across setups.
Lower Anchors and Top Tethers in the 2026 Atlas
Every seating position in the second and third rows has:
- A removable head restraint
- A top tether anchor
Every second-row seating position also has lower anchors. Lower anchors are notably missing from the third row. While they aren’t necessary for a safe car seat installation, they’re helpful for booster seats. Many boosters offer lower anchor connectors to keep the seat secure when unoccupied. Otherwise, buckle the booster in with the seat belt to keep it from becoming a projectile in a crash.
Atlas Center Seat: Overlapping Lower Anchors and Tight Buckle Spacing
The second-row center lower anchors are unfortunately overlapped by the seat belt behind the driver. That means if you want to use the center seat’s lower anchors, you can’t use the seat belt behind the driver at the same time.
Additionally, the space between the center seat belt buckle and the buckle for the adjacent position is very small. This means most car seats are too wide to install in the middle seat without resting on the belt buckle, which can damage the buckle.
Refer to your owner’s manual for specific guidance, but you can contact VW for a buckle cover if you want to install a larger car seat in the center position. The buckle cover makes the outboard passenger buckle unusable.
Translation: If you want to install the outboard seat with the seat belt (usually needed for three-across installs), your center car seat must be:
- Very narrow
- Installed using the seat belt
Enter the Graco SlimFit3 LX. While some other narrow car seats work here too, nothing is as versatile as this seat. And because the center seat belt is attached to the vehicle seat itself, a belt-installed center seat can still tilt forward with the 60% side of the bench.
Best Car Seats for the Atlas Second Row
The wide outboard seats can accommodate just about any car seat. There’s also plenty of legroom to fit large seats front-to-back. For my 2026 tour, I fit two Graco SlimFit3 LXs and an Evenflo Revolve360 Slim three across, all installed with the seat belt.
If you plan to use both the second and third rows for passengers at the same time, I recommend using a compact car seat in the second row to preserve third-row legroom.
Examples of compact seats include:
Atlas Third Row Car Seat Space and Access
The third row has two full-size seats and can comfortably fit:
- Adults
- Children in boosters
- Children in car seats
Rear-facing seats fit, but they must be compact. Even wider seats like the Britax Grow With You and Nuna AACE fit back here, with easy buckle access.
To access the third row, use the car seat tilt feature, which moves the seat up and forward without compromising a car seat installed with lower anchors. Of course, this also works with no car seat installed.
A rotating car seat is a great option here, so even a rear-facing seat can take advantage of car seat tilt. Car seats that rotate and have higher lower anchor weight limits in rear-facing mode include:
These seats also work three across next to a narrow, low-profile, forward-facing car seat in the center, like the Graco SlimFit3 LX.
Car Seats That Aren’t Compatible with the Atlas
Any forward-facing harnessed seat or booster seat that:
- Requires a head restraint
- Doesn’t permit a gap caused by a head restraint
This is less of a problem in the second row, since the head restraints sit relatively flush with the seat, particularly in the center position.
However, the third-row head restraints are extremely bulky when they’re not removed for a car seat or booster installation.
Can You Use Lower Anchors and the Seat Belt Together in the Atlas?
Another common question is whether the lower anchors and seat belt can be used together if the car seat permits it.
Yes. If the car seat permits using both lower anchors and the seat belt, VW also permits it.
At the time of this writing, the only car seats that permit this are:
- Nuna Pipa
- Clek Foonf (forward-facing)
- babyark
- Axkid One3
