Features We Love
  • Second Row Comfort That Feels Like a Luxury Upgrade: The second row is incredibly spacious with excellent legroom, available captain’s chairs, heated and ventilated seats, sunshades, and easy-to-reach USB-C ports—this is where the EV9 truly shines for families.
  • Excellent Car Seat Compatibility: With multiple lower anchors and tether anchors across rows, plus generous space for rear-facing seats, the EV9 is one of the most car-seat-friendly electric SUVs currently available.
  • Smart, Family-Friendly Tech: From the curved display and heads-up display to the genius USB-C setup (charge-only vs. CarPlay), plus a built-in rear camera mirror—this car is packed with thoughtful features that actually make mom life easier.

‍

Car Mom Review

The Exterior

Exterior: Boxy, Sporty, and Futuristic

The EV9 leans into a bold, boxy design that feels like a mix between the Kia Soul and Kia Telluride.

Key exterior highlights:

  • Sporty GT-Line accents with blacked-out trim
  • Clean rear design with a hidden wiper
  • Unique, modern lighting elements
  • Roof rails and strong SUV presence

It’s different—but in a way that still feels very “Kia,” which works.

One downside: the front trunk (frunk) is surprisingly small and not especially functional for family gear.

First Row

Interior: Spacious Where It Matters Most

Because it’s an EV, the EV9 benefits from a longer cabin—giving families more usable space where they need it.

First Row Experience

The driver’s seat feels comfortable and thoughtfully designed, with:

  • A curved digital display and heads-up display
  • Heated, ventilated, and even massaging seats
  • A unique calf support extension for long drives
  • Smart storage and charging solutions

One standout feature is the ability to choose whether a USB-C port connects to Apple CarPlay or just charges—an incredibly practical touch for families sharing the car.

Second Row

Second Row: The Star of the Show

The second row is where the EV9 really shines.

  • Excellent legroom—even for taller adults
  • Available captain’s chairs or bench seating
  • Heated and ventilated seats
  • Built-in sunshades
  • USB-C ports mounted on seatbacks (far more usable than traditional placements)

There’s even a minivan-like center console setup, adding extra practicality for families.

‍

Third Row

Third Row: The Trade-Off

While the first and second rows feel spacious, the third row is where compromises show up.

  • Limited legroom, especially when the second row is positioned comfortably
  • Better suited for occasional use rather than daily seating
  • Still includes thoughtful amenities like cup holders, vents, and USB ports

If you rely on a third row every single day, this may feel tight. But for occasional use, it works.

‍

No items found.

Trunk

Cargo Space: Good, Not Great

In real-life testing, the EV9 was able to fit a double stroller in the trunk, which is a solid benchmark for family usability.

Additional highlights:

  • Underfloor storage for extra gear
  • Flat-folding second and third rows for expanded cargo space
  • Manual seat folding (quick and efficient)

However, compared to gas-powered competitors, cargo space behind the third row is slightly limited.

‍

Safety

Technology & Safety Features

The EV9 comes packed with modern safety and driver-assist features, including:

  • Forward collision warning
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Parking distance warning
  • Parking collision avoidance

The infotainment system is responsive and customizable, though some climate control placements feel unintuitive during use.

The 2024 Kia EV9 is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+!

Car Seat Setup

Car Seat Compatibility: A Huge Win

From a CPST perspective, the EV9 is impressive.

  • Lower anchors and tether anchors across multiple seating positions
  • Strong second-row space for rear-facing car seats
  • Easy installation in both second and third rows

This is one of the most car-seat-friendly EVs currently available, which is a major win for growing families.

I LOVE this car as a decently affordable, midsize fully electric SUV. Because let’s face it, there’s not a ton out there. I currently have 3 kids in car seats, soon to be 4 and we fit mainly because of the car seat tilt + a rotating car seat to achieve rear facing and still get 3rd row access. So that is a hugeeeee pro. But the con there is that we have to compensate that space somewhere- which comes in the third row. Because I’ll have 2 rear facing in the second row and 2 forward facing in the third, leg room is tight up front. In order to fit the rear facing in the middle and accommodate my kids’ legs in the third row, driver and front passenger cannot be giant people. Also not great trunk space with third row up. BUT because we don’t need gas and we have solar in SoCal, that’s a huge pro of this car. I also think it looks great inside and out and it’s fast!

This car has everything I need as a family of 4. The second row captain’s chairs has ceiling vents and the ability to move seats forward and back from the driver’s screen, which is a game changer when they’re kicking the back of my seat or other kids are climbing into the third row. The third row has 2 seats so kids in boosters can comfortably buckle themselves without struggles. The car zips (because it’s electric) and is very quiet internally and externally. A few complaints from a mom’s perspective: the rear truck doesn’t often open remotely when the car is locked. I am always having to either go to the driver’s side to unlock the vehicle fully or dig for my keys, which isn’t convenient when your hands are full of little hands and a shopping cart at the grocery store. The second row captain’s chair also don’t sit upright (slight recline) when there is a car seat latched. However, I love this car and will be choosing a newer model when our lease is up.

I think the Kia EV9 is one of the most underrated 3-row SUVs in the market for its price. We have the 2024 GT-Line trim, which is both the most performance-oriented trim and have all of the options in terms of luxury. It's not a cheap vehicle (i.e., costs more than a base/decently optioned BMW X5), but for the price, we think it easily has more features and luxury comforts than a car that could be twice as expensive. We have ventilated front AND second row seats (in addition to heated), massage driver's seat, incredible electric vehicle pickup from zero to 60, and also have great second and third row leg room. In fact, the third row easily fits 2 adults (there are only 2 seats), and in default day to day driving, we put our front facing daughter (5 years old) in the third row and rear facing baby (18 months) in the second row in case one parent needs to sit next to him when he's fussy. We tested out multiple cars in the segment (including Rivian R1S, other 3 row SUVs that weren't quite as big as the full size SUV line up), and the Kia EV9 felt like it had the best second row and third row leg room without compromise on luxury. The only downside is that the turning radius feels a bit more sluggish than cars of similar size, but this is a relatively small gripe. We truly think this is the perfect car for our family, and if you're in the market for a 3 row SUV, think this is the perfect mix of features for the price.

This is the ultimate mom car. With captains chairs in the second row and descent sized seats in the third row, everyone fits. My 8 year old easily accesses and sits in the third row in a booster, the 100lb dog fits next to her. My 4 year old sits in a car seat in one of the captains chairs in the second row and my 5 month old’s rear facing car seat fits easily behind the driver’s seat. All with room for backpacks on the floor near the kids, plenty of c charger outlets for the iPads on longer drives. Driver has a massage seat (I do wish the passenger did as well) and the stroller fits in the rear. The built in sunshades for the second row seats are a must with kids. The 300 mile range is great. I feel the safest I ever have in a car driving this one and aesthetically, it’s sleek and sporty.

Love this car as a driver. It is so incredibly comfortable. Handles well. A very smooth drive. Has real pep to it when you need it. Technology is fantastic. Interior finishes are top notch. We went with top trim “GT Line” and wow what an incredible value, let alone for 3 row EV!. Truly luxury feeling at a Kia price tag. Space wise…It’s def not a full size SUV or minivan but, I think it’s very competitive with other three row SUVs. Very pleased with our car seat set up though - RF Graco 4ever behind driver with plenty of clearance and enough space for a FF Diono Radian in the 3rd row driver side behind it. We have oldest in a Diono Cambria HBB in thr 2nd row behind the passenger. With third row up, we can fit a stroller fine — though admittedly not much else. The frunk is pretty useless as far as meaningful storage goes. For third row, I would not try to deal with anyone rear facing or a younger forward facing child that couldn’t assist with buckling a five-pt harness. I’m 5’6” and can fit back there comfortably with 2nd row seat halfway back. My biggest gripe is the cup holders in the GT Line. They’re the spinning/pop-out ones, my water bottle/tumbler always rattles, and they’re offset rather than next to each other which feels like wasted space.

If you’re in the market for a spacious, 3rd row EV, the EV9 won me over! With Captain’s Chairs, it’s so easy to navigate and use both 2nd and 3rd rows for cargo, carpool with extra friends or family in town. The EV range is fantastic and it drives intuitively like a car. Substantial trunk space even with 3rd row up, and appreciate the overhead vents. Compatible with Tesla charging stations and gets better mileage than my former Audi E-Tron Q4. Feels like such an upgrade with space while still being mid size and appreciate the various safety driving features like lane assist. Overall this car won us over and it was an easy choice compared to other hybrid and EV models.

We lvoe our EV9! It’s been a great car for 2 adults, 1 baby, and a dog! I did the thing Kelly tells people not to do and I bought a new car for just 1 baby. But we really wanted the third row for our dog, and it’s worked out really great for us! Front row: as a driver this car is very comfortable and has lots of great safety features like blind spot warnings and cameras. It has “highway drive assist” which is amazing because it’ll make lane changes for you! The center console is a bit small, which is slightly inconvenient. Second row: we have our son on the drivers side and I have no complaints about the car seat installation. We use a graco turn2me and it’s worked great! I often sit in the second row on the passenger side and the comfort features are excellent. I have heated and ventilated seats and plenty of leg room. There is a leg rest you can put up but it doesn’t make much sense because even with the front seat pushed all the way forward, I still can’t comfortably put my feet up and I’m only 5’1”. I have an outlet to charge my phone easily accessible. I’ve breastfed back here countless times! I never worry about my son overheating on the 100 degree days because of the ceiling vents, and the car cools down very fast. There is a small console with a tray table back here and it’s really convenient for when we get fast food. I have captain’s chairs but I wish I had a bench. Third row: my dog often gets this whole row to himself, and I don’t worry about him overheating thanks to the ceiling vents. For humans, there’s not much leg room, but it’s ok if you push the second row seats forward a bit. Charging: we usually charge in the garage. On a regular day we usually use less than 10% battery. We’ve gone on a few roadtrips and had no issues using the fast chargers. With the third row up there’s not a ton of trunk space. Overall, we highly recommend this car for families!

I have owned a BMW X7 and Tesla model Y 7 seater before this and truly am so excited about this car and all the tech and upgrades that come with it. I test drove it, including installing all our kids car seats, and fell in love. It doesn't drive as big as it is and has SO much space for the passengers. I ended up going with the bench as was so impressed with all the upgrades the Land trim comes with. Love the video rear view mirror, so with car seats in the third row, they aren't blocking your visibility. This feels so high end and looks great on the road. Performance wise, the electric motor is zippy and fun. I will be honest and say I have had a strange issue with the tires (all 4 of them) where they needed to be replaced because of the foam inside causing the car to shake violently at highway speeds once we left the dealership to take it home. I'm hoping replacing them will remove the issue but figured id mention in case someone test drives it and feels anything similar!

Pros: This car is fun to drive and has a lot of cool features! I love that it has window shades, ceiling vents, four cup holders up front, two sunroofs, and a decent sized trunk! It has so much power and feels like a large SUV without being too clunky. It’s easy to charge, especially since Kia offers a Tesla charging adapter. The seats are very comfortable and there are a lot of charging ports throughout the car! Cons: I dislike the user interface-it’s too complicated even for someone like myself and my husband who are pretty knowledgeable about tech. I hate the center console because it’s a floating console and it vibrates/rattles at higher speeds. When you turn the car on to cool it down/warm it up via your phone, it doesn’t turn on the rear vents, so you have to manually turn those on when you get in the car if you have rear passengers. When I have my bike rack on the car, the auto-open trunk door always opens and smacks the metal bike rack (i.e. there’s no sensor to stop it from hitting something). 🙄 Lastly, there is no sunglasses holder in the ceiling, so my sunglasses live in a cup holder. Overall, I do really like the vehicle, but we probably won’t purchase it after our lease is up!

I love this car! Previously owned BMW, Volvo and Tesla this has been top of my list. We wanted electric but more space and this was one of the only 3 row options at the time. I was worried about getting a Kia as I thought it was cheap but it is just as nice as my luxury cars and way nicer than my Tesla. I don’t recommend the tv/tech package if you plan to rear face in the second row as they stick out a lot, the doona fits great even with tall drivers but rotating seats are a tough fit (rear facing) totally fine forward facing. We only use the third row on occasion and it is small but would still be good for smaller children all the time as we might have a third my oldest will be very comfortable back there. Zero problems with the way the cars runs, looks or functions. Would prefer they did the front seat center console differently but the large cubbie in the backseat is great for diapers and change of clothes etc. also a random perfect while “holder” in the trunk I use all the time!

I absolutely love the size of this car. It seats 7, but somehow doesn’t feel giant or bulky. It truly zips around and is so easy to drive. It’s perfect for our family because it fits the kids and their friends without feeling like we’re driving a huge SUV. And the storage is AMAZING. There’s plenty of room in the trunk and the frunk. One of my favorite features? Putting my Costco rotisserie chicken in the frunk so the entire car doesn’t smell like chicken. Honestly, it’s the little things. I also love never having to get gas. We just plug it in at home and it’s ready to go. I get around 300 miles of range, which has been more than enough for our everyday driving. Does great in snowy winter driving.

This car was an excellent gateway into the electric car world. This was my first electric car and it did not disappoint. It drove smoothly like an electric car, but felt enough like an ICE that I didn’t notice a huge adjustment going from ICE to EV. It was stylish (pass on the matte paint though, guys) and safe. There was plenty of room for my one RF and one FF. The only reason I got rid of it was because my “dream car” was released and I couldn’t wait (spoiler alert: should have stuck with the EV9). Excellent mom/family car in the electric market.

This is my second electric vehicle, and I’m a big fan. I get about 300mi of range and it fits my family comfortably. Plenty of room behind tall passengers for a rear facing car seat. Deep front trunk is great for smelly soccer gear. No issues charging on road trips as the ev charging network keeps growing. No mechanical issues yet, great warranty & roadside.
