Features We Love

The 2025 Mazda CX-90 doesn’t bring major changes, but instead has small refinements. The exterior and overall layout stay the same, while the biggest updates are a more responsive infotainment system, slightly upgraded interior materials on higher trims, and smoother driver-assist features. Overall, it feels a bit more polished, but functionally it’s very similar to the 2024 model.

  • Strong car seat hardware in the second row: both captain’s chairs have full LATCH setups (lower anchors + top tether anchors), which makes installs really straightforward
  • In the third row, you get two top tether anchors and one set of lower anchors.
  • Flexible third row for car seats: there are two top tether anchors and one set of lower anchors, so you can actually make multiple car seats work back there
  • Deep third row seats: not shallow like a lot of SUVs, which makes a big difference for secure installs and proper car seat positioning
  • Strong rear-facing clearance: even with the front seat set for a ~6-foot driver, there’s still a couple inches of space
  • Two-seat third row is a win: no one’s crammed or sitting on buckles, and installs feel way more doable
  • Really comfortable second row: tons of knee room, sliding/reclining seats, built-in sunshades, plus heated and ventilated seats in this trim
  • Extra storage where you need it: second row center console has cupholders and surprisingly deep storage (even bigger than the front)
Car Mom Review

The Exterior

Let’s talk about the exterior of the 2024 Mazda CX-90, because overall I do think it’s a really good-looking, more premium-feeling SUV—but I have a few thoughts.

  • Front end is the standout: that big grille with chrome detailing gives it a really elevated, almost luxury look
  • Very long hood: it makes the car look sleek, but just remember that length isn’t translating to more space for your kids inside
  • From the side, it’s giving a mix of Tesla Model X and BMW X5
  • Doors are huge: almost minivan-level big, which I actually love for getting kids in and out
  • Design details feel high-end: chrome trim, Mazda badging, and the two-tone wheels all look really nice together
  • Back end is a little more basic: not bad, just doesn’t feel as modern as the rest of the car

So overall, I like the way it looks and it definitely leans more premium, but the proportions—especially that long hood—might not be for everyone.

No items found.

First Row

Up front, this is where the CX-90 really leans into that more premium feel—but there are a few things that stood out to me in real life.

  • Interior design feels high-end: the saddle brown with black and chrome detailing looks really nice, and the materials don’t feel cheap
  • Fully loaded tech: digital dash, heads-up display (which I love), and a really crisp surround-view camera
  • Infotainment is a little weird: Apple CarPlay works as a touchscreen, but outside of that you’re using the control knob…which just feels unnecessary when the screen clearly can be touch
  • Good safety features: things like the distracted driver alert popped up while I was driving, which is actually helpful
  • Climate control is just okay: heated seats, ventilated seats, heated steering wheel are all great, but the airflow struggled in the heat
  • Cupholders are not it: they didn’t fit my Stanley all week, which is honestly a dealbreaker for some of you
  • Center console is small: for a car this size, I expected more storage up front

Overall, it looks and feels luxury from the driver’s seat, and a lot of the features are there—you just run into a few little usability quirks once you start living with it day to day.

Second Row

This is a really strong second row for car seats, but there are a few things you need to understand depending on how you’re setting it up.

  • LATCH + tether anchors (captain’s chairs): each captain’s chair has its own set of lower LATCH anchors and a top tether anchor, so both seats are fully equipped for car seat installs
  • Great for rear-facing installs: I had a rear-facing seat installed with the driver seat set for me at about 6 feet tall and still had a couple inches of clearance, which is a big win
  • Spacing is really comfortable: there’s plenty of room between the seats, and overall knee clearance is great, so you’re not feeling cramped even with car seats installed

Where things get a little tricky:

  • No car seat tilt for third row access (with captain’s chairs): the seats do slide and tilt, but not with a car seat installed
  • Center console is not removable: so you can’t create a pass-through, which means if you have car seats installed, third row access is basically through the trunk
  • Seats are adjustable: they slide and recline, which helps with install angles and overall flexibility

Overall, from a pure car seat standpoint, this second row is really solid—great anchor access, good spacing, and easy installs. The main limitation is access to the third row once those car seats are in place.

Third Row

The third row in the Mazda CX-90 is actually pretty solid for kids and car seats, but there are a few important things to know.

  • Two-seat third row: I really like this—no one is sitting on buckles, and it just feels more comfortable overall
  • Car seat setup: there are two top tether anchors and one set of lower anchors, so you do have flexibility for installs back here
  • Deep seats (this matters): the seats are not shallow, which makes a big difference for car seat installs—I was able to install a seat and still have about an inch or two of clearance
  • Works well for car seats: not winning any awards for legroom, but actually better for installs because of that seat depth

From a comfort and usability standpoint:

  • Comfortable for the size: good head clearance and elbow room for a smaller three-row SUV
  • Nice features: cup holders and USB ports on both sides

Where it falls short:

  • Ventilation is not it: there’s basically one vent, and it’s not close to your face—it’s just not enough, especially for kids
  • Access can be a pain: if you have car seats installed in the second row, kids are likely climbing in through the trunk
No items found.

Trunk

This is where the CX-90 feels a little tighter for families.

  • About 14.9 cubic feet behind the third row, which is on the smaller side for midsize SUVs
  • In real life: a full-size stroller didn’t fit, mainly because the trunk isn’t very tall
  • Underfloor storage is minimal—more small compartments than usable space
  • Seats fold down easily when you need more room

How It Compares

  • CX-90: 14.9 cu ft
  • Highlander: 16 cu ft
  • Palisade: 18 cu ft
  • Telluride: 21 cu ft
  • Traverse: 22.9 cu ft

So compared to others in this category, the CX-90 is definitely on the smaller end for trunk space.

Overall, it works for everyday use, but if you’re regularly hauling strollers or a lot of gear, you’ll likely need to fold a seat down.

Safety

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and includes seatbelt pretensioners in the front seating positions. The front passenger pretensioner system is tied to the occupant classification system, meaning it adjusts deployment based on the passenger’s weight for added safety.

‍

Car Seat Setup

This is a really strong car seat vehicle overall, but it’s one of those setups where you need to understand how everything is laid out to make the most of it.

Second Row (Captain’s Chairs):

  • Each captain’s chair has a full LATCH setup with lower anchors and a top tether anchor
  • Great rear-facing clearance: even with the driver seat set for about 6 feet tall, there’s still a couple inches of space
  • Seats slide and recline, which helps with getting the right install angle
  • Compact car seats are key here: the second row space is a bit limited, so larger/bulkier car seats aren’t the best option if you’re trying to maximize space

Third Row:

  • You get two top tether anchors and one set of lower anchors
  • That means you can do one full LATCH install back here, plus additional forward-facing seats using tether anchors
  • The seats are nice and deep, which actually makes a big difference for secure installs (a lot of third rows are too shallow)
  • I was able to install a car seat back here and still had a little bit of clearance, which is not always the case

What’s Challenging:

  • No true car seat tilt for third row access with the captain’s chairs
  • Center console is not removable, so you can’t create a pass-through
  • If you have car seats installed, third row access is basically through the trunk, which can be a hassle

I love my CX-90. I love the 360 camera and the infotainment system being controlled with a knob for the driver or touchscreen for the passenger. I have a 90 pound dog and she fits so well in the back with a third row folded down. I have never had issues with the entertainment system or the cars performance. There have been a couple recalls which were annoying to take to fix, but we’re not noticeable in my driving of the car. My husband likes the sport mode and zooming around back roads. The only thing I would change is not having ceiling or side vents in the passenger area. It can get hot in the summer and doesn’t cool off quickly with a rear facing car seat.

I really really wanted to love this car because I’ve been a Mazda loyalist from when I first started driving! Started with the hatchback and then moved to the Mazda cx-5 (x2) and now the cx-90. I’ve had a ton of issues with it but luckily covered by warranty but regardless is still a pain to deal with. We’ve had the headlights go out on a snowy night, we’ve had gear shifting issues, tire issues and even windshield washer fluid issues. Because of all the issues I’d be hesitant to get this car again. I also don’t love how there’s not much room for mom things - can’t tell you how many times the hand sanitizer has flown out of where the phone charging station is because I have no where else to put it. The cup holders are also way too small. All that to say, things I like. It’s a Mazda! My dealership has been fantastic in helping with all the issues. Also love the exterior. Trunk space is what I need when the 3rd row is down. The bench is just big enough to squeeze our 70 lb dog between the 2 car seats (although he prefers to have the 3rd row to himself). Hoping later years of the car have less issues than mine!

CX-90

I just leased a Mazda CX-90 PHEV and have only had it for a few days, so these are definitely early impressions. I chose the base model for cost reasons, and while I absolutely love how the car looks and how luxurious it feels even in the base trim there are a few things that really bother me. The biggest one is the lack of keyless entry. With kids, I don’t always have my keys in my hand, so having to take them out to unlock the car is surprisingly annoying. I also really wish it had a power liftgate. With kids, this is a big downside, especially at this price point. Another thing I find annoying is that you need to plug your phone in to use Android Auto. I’m sure it’s something I’ll get used to, but coming from a car where I didn’t have to plug in my phone, I definitely miss that convenience. On the positive side, the car feels incredibly luxurious for a base model. It’s spacious and very comfortable for my family. I have two kids in booster seats, and they have plenty of room. I don’t really need the third row, so for me it’s mainly useful for extra storage or the occasional carpool. I also absolutely love the PHEV. That’s probably the biggest standout for me and a major reason I wanted this car. Overall, I really like the CX-90 and I’m happy with my choice. I ultimately chose it over the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe because I preferred Mazda as a brand. However, for a vehicle at this price point, I do feel that some of the technology and convenience features are lacking. Compared with other brands at a similar price, you can definitely get more features in a base model. The cost difference per month for another trim didnt make any sense for me as I drive less than 15km a day.

I’ve had my Mazda CX-90 for a while now, and there are a few things I really love about it that I think are worth mentioning, especially for anyone looking at 3-row SUVs. The third row is probably my favorite feature. I’m 5’9” and can comfortably sit back there for a long period of time without feeling cramped. My knees aren’t pushed up to my chest because the third row isn’t sitting directly on the wheelbase, which makes a huge difference. There are cup holders, charging ports, and surprisingly good legroom—even when you have full-size adults sitting in the second row. My only wish for the third row would be ceiling vents and better ventilation back there. That said, the second-row vents do a surprisingly good job of keeping the entire vehicle comfortable, so it hasn’t been a deal breaker for us. I also LOVE how this thing drives. It’s zippy, handles really well, and doesn’t feel like I’m driving a giant tank. I test drove a LOT of 3-row SUVs before choosing the CX-90, and ultimately the way it drove was what sold me. It felt much more responsive and enjoyable than many of the other 3-row options I tried. The biggest downside for me is definitely the technology/infotainment system. If you have an iPhone, you get the touchscreen experience, but with Android, you don’t get the same functionality and the system relies more heavily on the control dial. The dial works, but navigating through everything can feel a little clunky. Thankfully, there’s Google voice activation, so I’ve found myself using that quite a bit, and because of that, the technology hasn’t been a deal breaker for me. Overall, I really, really like this vehicle. For me, the combination of a genuinely usable third row and a fun driving experience is hard to beat. I know every vehicle has its compromises, but the CX-90 has been a great fit for us.

For just having two kids, I love this car! It’s very comfortable to drive and all of the cameras make parking a breeze. There’s plenty of second row space with the captains chairs and the doors open wide to make it easy to get in and out. I like the combo of knobs and touchscreen for apple car play and climate control. We knew we would generally keep the third row down to allow plenty of trunk storage space, but that wouldn’t work for all families. With the third row up, the trunk is pretty small. I do wish there was more ventilation in the back.

I have not tried to put a car seat in the third row but surely it is not possible, a small adult has trouble getting back there. My husband is 6”3 and has difficulty with any car seat behind him except the Graco slim3x. We have captain’s chairs and I regret that because if we need to sit with the kids we have to use the third row and then have no trunk space. I find the wireless CarPlay horrible on this car, it cuts out all the time. The wireless charger is very sensitive, but there is no where else to put your phone. Vent on the floor in the second row make it so putting stuff on the floor in the winter is a problem, it will melt your stuff. The vents in the corners by the doors in the front are very awkward shaped and we always hit our knee or shoulder on them when getting in the car or cleaning the floor.

I have proudly owned Mazdas my entire adult life and have overall loved them. My CX-90 is no exception. It drives great, has a quiet cabin, and is very reliable and has good gas mileage for the size. However, while I initially liked that it was small for its class, I now wish it were bigger on the interior. My dog has a hard time getting to the third row, and there is almost no storage in the trunk when the third row is up. To road trip with two kids and a dog we will have to add a roof or tailgate carrier. Also, there are no second row ceiling vents. All said and done I am happy with it as my day to day mom car, but for our second car (and second kid) we will probably upgrade in size at least slightly.

This is our fourth Mazda and unfortunately my least favorite we've had. Most of my dislikes stem from silly little changes that were made to comfort features so it seems extremely trivial. The cupholders are smaller than the CX-9 and most water bottles don't fit. The little cubby where you would typically put your keys isn't flush so the keys fly out when you're driving. Other than that, we do like the safety, style, and technology in Mazda's. We are short people so I don't know if taller families would be as comfortable.

The CX-90 is an affordable large SUV that definitely gets us where we need to go! It is pretty comfortable. However, if you need the 3rd row up then you have almost no extra trunk space. In addition, the programming/ set up of the touch screen is very difficult to navigate.

My relationship with this care has been... complicated. I loved the look and feel of the car when I drove it, but I have had lots of issues since purchasing. I bought the first year of production (summer of 2023), originally had a lemon and got a second one through the dealership. When I do not have active recalls (which was monthly the first 18 months of ownership), I love the vehicle. I have the PHEV model, and using the battery is great. Prior to the birth of my daughter, I have also loved the space. Now we have a re-facing seat and the front seat is tight with the carseat in the second row. The third row is un-usable for passengers, so it really only comfortably fits four adults. The trunk space has also been small the whole time, but it is more obvious with a child. We ride with the third row down 98% of the time. The tech on the car and the functionality of the interior is great. Love the knob system for the screen (hot take, but now I don't think I can go back). It is incredibly safe to drive. I don't have to worry about blind spots or having an accident. Another con with a child is no upper air vents, but the car does cool very quickly and the third row has vents at knee level. Over all, I both love and have reservations about this car. It is a great sporty mom car for someone (like myself prior to being a mom!), but I feel like I am going to out-grow it with our second if we are blessed with another baby. Hope this helps someone!

I honestly love this car. I was looking for something that had enough room for our family without feeling like I was driving a massive SUV, and the CX-90 has been a really good fit. The second row has plenty of space, which was really important to me with a rear-facing car seat. There’s enough room to get my daughter in and out without feeling like I’m constantly fighting with the seat or the door. The third row is definitely tight. I wouldn’t want adults back there for a long drive, but for kids or occasional use, it’s totally fine. I like having the option without needing a huge SUV. I also really love the interior. It feels nice and upscale, but it’s still practical for everyday mom life. It drives really nicely too and doesn’t feel like a giant family hauler. Overall, I’m really happy with the CX-90. The third row is definitely the biggest compromise, but the second-row space, overall size, comfort, and interior are all big wins for me. ❤️

Good car. I was looking for optional third row and this car provides just that. We don't use it often and when we do it is for 1 adult. There is not alot of leg room for that person especially when the car seats are in the captains seats in the second row. I do like the optional third row so we have alot of room in the trunk. It is a PHEV so I like the electric option.

Test drove and ultimately bought this car. Feels luxury with all the tech and liked the price. I have 2 kids in boosters so car seat setup didn’t matter to me, but I did notice the latches and tether anchors. Not the roomiest car, but as a short person I liked that it doesn’t feel too big. Tech up front was fairly intuitive to figure out and I don’t hate that the screen isn’t a touch screen. The console feels unnecessarily wide, but that wasn’t a deal breaker for me! Overall really like this car, and the price was right on budget.

The styling was good, though the technology felt light years behind other brands. The second row was great with boosters (chicco). Unfortunately it left us stranded in a remote area, which was terrifying as a mom alone with two young kids. The alternator went bad (it was only a few months old); the rental place and the tow truck driver said they see many of this brand with electrical issues after they hit 15,000-30,000 miles.

The CX-90 has great value for its class along with great gas mileage and a more “luxury” feel to it. The captains chairs in the second row are nice, but there is no car seat tilt and the middle aisle is very narrow. The third row is very tight, making it uncomfortable for any longer distance ride and I am only 5’4”. There are also no ceiling vents and a very small trunk with the third row up that is even more limited by the rounded shape of the vehicle. I have a joie rue carseat which fits nicely behind the driver seat when I am driving. My husband prefers his seat back a bit more which makes it a very tight fit for the infant seat. The center console is small with very limited storage and two cupholders that aren’t the best for larger cups though they will fit. The technology works well and it has great features in the premium plus trim package. Overall, i’m happy with my purchase as it fit the budget and works very well for my current situation (1 young child and 1 large dog), but I can definitely see a need for something different as my family grows. Fitting a full size stroller and my dog in the trunk would be challenging with third row down and impossible with the third row up.

Great car for a family with 1-2 kids! I use it to transport two large dogs in the third row plus my child and it works great for our needs and our family size. We purchased the Premium Sport edition with bench seating. Pros: Cooling and heated seats, window shades in second row, bench seating, latches for car seats that are easily accessible. Cons: Shaky first gear sometimes, no ceiling vents, occasional difficulty entering third row

I bought the PHEV mainly to help with gas for a long work commute. Overall, it has been a game changer with only needing to fill up about once a month. I have two kiddos in car seats (1 FF, 1 RF) in captains chairs. Looking back I wish I would have purchased the bench seat at the 3rd row is extremely tight for a full sized adult. I recently had to sit back there on a long car ride to help console my 3 month old and it was miserable. The trunk has a good amount of space with the third row down but not much when it’s up. The center console is also very small as are the cup holders. It drives well and has a good pick up. It also feels luxurious without the price tag.

I have a bench seat and it makes all the difference in this car. I have 2 RF kids (one infant seat) and can fit three across on the bench. It is tight but it works. There is no car seat tilt so accessing the third row would be difficult so the bench is a must for us. The third row is nice to have when we take family places or take car seats out to go out with friends. It’s very comfortable to sit in as an adult (I’m 5’6”). The trunk space is just okay with the 3rd row up but with it down we are able to fit a 4 seater wonderfold wagon. I would definitely purchase again and the only thing that would make it better is car seat tilt and ceiling vents. There are built in sun shades which are so nice!

My husband and I rented this car for a weekend trip for a wedding out of town, and it was really fun to drive! Very peppy on the gas, beautiful styling inside. The car looks big from the outside, but feels kind of cramped on the inside. If you have more than 2 kids or taller adults, I wouldn't recommend. But it was very fun to drive.

I love this car! I get the size and flexibility of a mid sized 3 row suv, but it has the comfort and zippiness of driving a car. It would not have worked well with younger kids, but is perfect with a teen and tween. My kids love the heated seats, captains chairs, leg room, and how strong the a/c blows in the second row. I initially thought I wouldn’t like the knob for tech access, but it’s already second nature and allows me to keep my eyes on the road better. Decent cargo room with the 3rd row up, great space with it down.

Love love the car. If you need the third row, trunk is a little small but I make it work if I have groceries. Car seat had anchors in the back seat the only down side is that head rest are not removable so not every car seat will fit properly in the back row.

Overall, I've been really happy with this car. It runs great, and the interior is well done. I have two kids, so I do not utilize the 3rd row often, but it is on the smaller side for the average-sized adult. It does have a few quirks as far as design, but reliability is much more important to me. So far, it has worked great for our family!

We love our Mazda cx-90 phev! It’s absolutely stunning and we have been beyond impressed with the quality and service from Mazda. My favorite things about the car are the safety features! I feel so safe driving my family around in this car. It also drives so nicely. It’s easy to drive and is very quiet. I am able to get my daughter to school and back on a single charge, but the range is quite small. It suits our needs for the time being. My biggest complaint about this car is the storage! The center console is laughably small and the cupholders could stand to be a bit deeper. We rarely use the 3rd row and like to keep it down for the trunk space. There are no storage areas under the trunk floor. We have captains chairs and my children fit well. One in a rear facing Chicco next fit and one in a booster. The cupholders in the rear are a bit weird, almost like they were added as an afterthought, but otherwise we enjoy the interior. We are pretty sure we will be purchasing this outright once the lease is up. We previously drove a cx-9 before the remodel and have been impressed with the quality of this new model.

I love my CX-90 for a family with two kids! I have the captain’s chairs, and they’re perfect because the kids aren’t sitting too close together. I did downsize from a Palisade, so it’s definitely a little smaller overall, but since I only use the third row occasionally, it works really well for us. My biggest complaints are the lack of storage, especially the limited center console space, the second-row cup holders, and the trunk being just a tad smaller than I’d like. Forward-facing car seats can also be a little tricky because of the headrests; I had to remove mine. I also wish the car had ceiling vents. I’m not a huge fan of the infotainment system either. It has Apple CarPlay, but I really wish the screen had full touchscreen functionality. Otherwise, she’s a beauty and has been a great fit for our family. I really value reliability, and I love that I was able to get a three-row vehicle with a hybrid option. I’m hoping to keep her for many years to come!

Great cost effective 3 Row SUV. We are done with 2 kids but wanted carpool flexibility with a third row. This cars feels very luxurious with a surprisingly low price tag. Handling is great with a little to be desired in heavy snow. Doors open nice and wide which is great for loading infant car seats.

Love this car! It’s a perfect sized, 3-row SUV. I didn’t want to drive a full size SUV but wanted lots of room and this was a great compromise. Love the way both the exterior and interior looks. Always get compliments. Perfect for our family of four. My kids are 9 and 11 and can easily fit in the third row with no complaints. Love the PHEV. I get 25 miles on electric which is great for school drop off and running to the store. Mazda is also known for its safety ratings which is a major plus. Only negative I have is the size of the cup holders. Doesn’t fit a standard Stanley or Owala but once you find the right cups, you get used to it. My lease is up in February and I think I am just going to lease another Mazda. I like that they don’t have luxury prices but very much look luxurious. Highly recommend!

I drove this car for a month while my car was in the shop getting fixed after it was hit. This car was considered compatible to my palisade and I feel it is not. The second row is small. The leg room for the front passenger was minimal with a rear facing car seat. The technology was less than ideal having to use the dial to control touch screen. The trunk space was so small and the third row was tight! I wanted to love it and got it as our rental as we were considering getting one for my husband as our second family car and we no longer will be doing that
