Features We Love
  • Major Tech Upgrade for 2025: including a 13.2-inch infotainment screen, new integrated system with Alexa, Google, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, and Ford BlueCruise (semi-autonomous driving).
  • Family-Friendly Second-Row Amenities: Built-in sunshades, ceiling vents with a panoramic sunroof, second-row climate controls, USBs, and even a household outlet make the second row a great place for kids — and a huge plus for pumping moms or long road trips.
  • Excellent Car Seat Flexibility: Every seating position has its own lower anchors and tether anchors, which gives parents a ton of flexibility for different car seat configurations.

Car Mom Review

The Exterior

For 2025, the Ford Explorer received a major facelift both inside and out. While the overall functionality from a family perspective didn’t change drastically, Ford made some significant tech upgrades that were very much needed.

The Ford Explorer sits on the smaller end of the midsize SUV category. It’s noticeably smaller than vehicles like the Chevy Traverse, Honda Pilot, and Volkswagen Atlas but that doesn’t mean it can’t work well for families.

The 2025 Explorer ST stands out with:

  • A high-gloss black grille with ST badging
  • Blacked-out Explorer lettering
  • 21-inch wheels that really elevate the sporty look

One thing I’m not personally a fan of is the black plastic trim along the sides, I would’ve loved to see that in body color or gloss black. That said, overall the Explorer ST looks sleek, modern, and athletic.

For families, it’s also worth noting that bench seating is now available on the Platinum trim for 2025. You can’t get a bench on the ST, but having that option on other trims is a big win.

First Row

Interior & Tech: A Much-Needed Upgrade

This is where the 2025 Explorer really shines.

Ford made major tech improvements, and honestly, they were overdue. Compared to competitors like the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride, the Explorer had fallen behind but not anymore.

New Tech Highlights for 2025:

  • 13.2-inch infotainment screen
  • Updated digital interface with Ford’s new integrated system
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
  • Built-in Alexa and Google integration
  • Available BlueCruise, Ford’s semi-autonomous driving system

Front-Row Comfort & Storage

Up front, the Explorer ST comes loaded with features:

  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Ambient lighting
  • Wireless charging pad
  • Multiple USB and USB-C ports

I love the amount of storage and cubby spaces throughout the cabin. There’s space for phones, lip gloss, snacks — all the essentials. The center console is a great size, and charging options are plentiful for busy families.

‍

Second Row

The Ford Explorer is either a 6 or 7 passenger vehicle, depending on whether you choose captain’s chairs or a bench seat. The third row only has two seats, and I actually love that.

Why? Because those two seats are usable and comfortable. I would much rather have two real seats than three cramped ones where someone is sitting on a buckle.

Second-Row Amenities

The second row includes:

  • Built-in sunshades
  • Cup holders
  • Door storage
  • Ceiling vents

‍

Car Seat Setup

  • Lower anchors and tether anchors in every seating position
  • Excellent flexibility for car seat placement
  • Removable headrests in the second row
  • Fixed headrests in the third row (check car seat compatibility here)

I tested the Explorer with two Britax Poplar car seats — one rear-facing and one forward-facing. For a tall driver (I’m about 6 feet), clearance was still solid, but because the Explorer is on the smaller side, I recommend compact front-to-back car seats for the best fit.

‍

Third Row

The Explorer’s third row only has two seats, and honestly? I love that.

  • Better elbow room
  • No awkward middle seat belt interfering with car seats
  • Comfortable for kids and adults

I installed a forward-facing seat back there with zero issues — no overhang, solid tether access, and ceiling vents (a must).

Trunk

Trunk Space: Smaller but Functional

Behind the third row, the Explorer offers about 16.7 cubic feet of cargo space. For comparison, the Volkswagen Atlas has about 21 cubic feet — so yes, it’s on the smaller side.

That said:

  • Third-row seats fold easily
  • Headrests pop forward
  • Power-folding seats make loading simple
  • Ceiling vents continue into the third row
  • Charging ports are available on the passenger side

I really appreciate that Ford kept comfort features like vents all the way to the back.

‍

Safety

The 2025 Ford Explorer boasts strong safety, earning a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating from the NHTSA and the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, thanks to its robust structure and standard Ford Co-Pilot360™ suite with advanced driver-assist features like Automatic Emergency Braking and Blind Spot Monitoring. It performs well in crash tests, scoring "Good" in key IIHS evaluations and exceeding standards with reinforced design, making it a leader in its class for family safety.

When we got a large dog and our kids got older our ford escape was not cutting it. After watching Kelly’s review I fell in love with the Explorer. I didn’t think we needed an expedition for just two kids and a dog but with the 3rd row it gives us flexibility for play dates, grandparents riding along ect. We’ve never had any major issue with the car and have been super happy with it. We live in MN and it performs great in ice and snow storms which is super important for us. We’ve done camping trips, road trips ect and been fine space wise for the 4 of us + dog and our stuff. If you plan to have 3 kids, I’d say this could get tight though.

I have a 2021 Ford Explorer Limited, and I LOVE her! I owned an XLT before, and the styling and materials feel and look a lot nicer in the Limited. I only have 2 kids, so we most often keep the third row down and enjoy the ginormous trunk. But I love having a third row for the occasional friend date! My 10yo occasionally likes to ride back there to get some space from his brother. I do wish it had a bench seat, but the kids don’t care! My boys are out of car seats, but installation was a breeze when we had them!

I’ve had my Ford Explorer for a while now, and overall, I really love it! The exterior is definitely one of my favorite things about it. We have the ST trim package, and it gives the Explorer such a sporty, sleek look. We chose the second-row captain’s chairs, and I’m really glad we did. They’re great for my teens, but I especially appreciate them when adults are riding in the second row. Everyone has a little more space and it makes getting in and out of the third row easier. The center console layout is another favorite. It’s practical, easy to use, and has a good amount of storage without feeling cluttered. One thing to keep in mind if you have a larger family: the third row only has two seat belts, so this is really a six-passenger setup with the captain’s chairs. A couple of things I wish were different: I do wish the ST trim felt a little more elevated inside. The exterior looks so sporty and upscale that I expected the interior to have a little more of that same wow factor. Also, the mirrors don’t automatically tilt down when you put the vehicle in reverse. I honestly didn’t think I would miss that feature as much as I do! Overall, though, I really love the sporty look, the second-row captain’s chairs, and the layout. For a family SUV, it has a great combination of practicality and style—and I can park in the garage!

The explorer is a beast and has so many creature comforts. Blue cruise is awesome to use especially in areas with lots of highways. We use this more than we thought we would. Ford updates infotainment a lot which means more bugs and can be clunky at times. I appreciate how many cameras are on this car. Trunk and cabin space are amazing

I LOVE my ST… the tech is amazing. Being able to lock and unlock the car from the keypad or the Ford app is so helpful. The comfort of the seats, especially the massage feature for long trips and the heat and ventilation is great. Ford did a great job with vents, storage, cameras, seat fold of the rear seats and the Blue Cruise option. There could always be more cup holders IYKYK… but they did add one on each of the four doors which helps a lot. The room with the 3rd row folded down is the best and there is even a storage compartment below. With the third row up there is still a substantial amount of room for bags, stroller, groceries, etc. This is the 3rd Explorer I’ve owned and this one is my fave!!

We purchased a 2021 Ford Explorer ST off the lot when my husbands prior SUV died. It checked his boxes for a comfortable drive and attractive body style, and technology was ok for the time. But this car has had LOTS of issues. Still under 100k miles so we have some coverage but it’s a pain in the butt to keep taking it in. Also interior plastic parts on the bottoms of the seats are coming off and the steering wheel leather has peeled. It did not age well. Would not recommend the 2021 ST.

Overall, I really love driving my Ford Explorer! It drives very well, and I love how safe and comfortable I feel behind the wheel. I previously drove a Honda CR-V, so it definitely took me some time to get used to the larger size, especially when parking, but now I love it! As a mom of four kids (ages 16, 15, 12, and 9), having the third row is a huge plus. When I have all my kids and their friends in the car, they always comment on how comfortable the third row is, which is great! There are plenty of cup holders throughout the vehicle, although I wish they accommodated larger water bottles like Stanleys and Owalas a little better. The USB-C ports in the back are extremely convenient, especially on longer car rides with kids. I also really appreciate the ceiling air vents, which help keep everyone comfortable. My biggest complaint is the trunk space when the third row is up. There is barely any room for groceries, sports equipment, or anything else, which can be frustrating when you have a larger family. Overall, I absolutely love the Explorer! It's comfortable, drives great, and has plenty of room for my family. I just wish Ford had given us a little more trunk space without having to fold down the third row!

I have two maxi cosi car seats in them. I’m lucky to be 4’11” otherwise I don’t think these seats would work for anyone taller especially if they are rear facing. I love the explorer for 2 kids it works well I love the trunk space as well as the extra storage underneath! (I keep potty essentials, park essential and extra clothing for kids there!) truly love the car minus my own car seat mistake and the here and there disconnecting of apple car play.

If you have 2 kids, I like this car. If you're planning/ have more than 2... this may not be the car for you. I am a Ford STAN but I cannot get behind the Explorer. There are so many things I like about it, window shades, good technology, and the mechanics are solid, but the functionality going beyond the second row starts to lose me. The trunk is spacious with the 3rd row down but does, as many suv's do, disappear when the seats are up. I have a pretty solid love hate relationship with this car. 7/10 recommend depending on your kiddos!

Strongly dislike our Ford Explorer. We have had nothing but problems with it since a week after we purchased it (used). We have spent over $10k in repairs including replacing the transmission before the car was even 5 years old. The second row is comfortable. That's the only compliment I will give it.

I love my Explorer with 2 kiddos! We came from an Atlas with a bench and maybe an unpopular opinion but I like the Explorer better. We have captains chairs so we have both kids FF and there is plenty of room for all their stuff and the 3rd row is easily accessible for the occasional guest back there (usually grandparents). Trunk is great size. I can fit a whole $250 grocery order back there with the 3rd row up. The interior tech leaves a little to be desired but that’s not really Fords strong suit. I think if we got another one down the road I would get a higher trim package for more of the bells and whistles and tech, but ours has everything we “need”. I don’t think the Explorer gets enough love as a family car! Also bonus is my husband feels like it’s more “manly” to drive than my Atlas was so there’s that 😆

Owned for less than a year. My husband and I are both tall and rear facing car seats were a no go with this vehicle. It was actually uncomfortable to drive since my seat had to be too far up so it didn’t affect the car seat behind me. The tech was great and it was a great ride. If the kids were out of car seats it would have been great for us.

I absolutely adore this car. I knew I wanted an SUV prior to having my first child and wanted something that was sporty but that I could still take to the local dealership for maintenance. This car hasn't given me any issues, the back seat is very spacious and I was able to easily fit the Evenflo Shyft DualRide when my son was a baby without any issues. I now have the Evenflo Revolve 360 Slim and it work perfectly for me in this car. I also frequently have adults riding in the second and third row and they commend the comfort and space that is available as well. I really appreciate the upper vents living in Texas with a rear facing child. I think that it quite literally a dealbreaker for me. If you are on the verge of getting an explorer I cannot recommend it enough.

I have loved my 2025 Explorer. My second row has captain chairs, which is perfect for my two children. We can easily access the 3rd row for additional passengers! The third row is roomy, has AC vents and high head rests. I often keep my third row down for ease carrying groceries, sports gear or even our family dogs! The large screen is very user friendly, even for someone like me that is technology challenged! A favorite feature for my husband and I is the map/GPS view behind the steering wheel. I previously drove a navigator. I was sure I would miss the extra room that larger SUV gives. The explorer has been a pleasant surprise and a great car for our family!

The Explorer was my first Ford SUV, and it won't be my last. After driving everything from a Bravada to a Cobalt to a Terrain, I've grown to love driving my Ford. I wish the exterior had more of the popular boxy look a lot of SUVs have these days, but the reliability of this Explorer far outweighs any cons. I have been religious about maintenance on the Explorer, and I feel that has helped minimize any issues that could come up after 4 years of driving a vehicle. My husband, child, and I take frequent roadtrips (5+ hour trips to visit family) and I find the size to be perfect, even with a dog in the other captains chair. We don't often use the third row but when taking grandparents with us, there is never a complaint about sitting in the third row with leg room and the ease of getting in and out. I wish the technology in my Explorer allowed me to connect to Apple CarPlay through bluetooth rather than my USB cord but it wasn't a dealbreaker when purchasing. I wish there was more storage in the area where the USB cords plug in under the console as it is a bit tight with two USB cords (husband and I have different phone models) so not much else can be stored there. Even when I'm interested in moving up to an Expedition, I'm quickly reminded that it is only a want and my Explorer is checking off all the boxes for what my little family needs.

Owned for about 6 months. Love the lighter interior with black exterior. Smooth and quiet ride, perfect size for our family of 4 with two in car seats. Upgraded from Escape to this Explorer. Two things I would change: 1. I miss the no-touch opening of the trunk and 2. The moonroof doesn’t open. We were told both features were discontinued with Ford products.

I love the sporty feel of the car. Needs better phone charger and don’t love that apple AirPlay has to connected with a cord. We have two captain chairs for second row which comes in handy the kids when we need to kill time in the car. The kids can move walk around while we are waiting for practices etc to start. Third row isn’t the most comfortable but it does have its own air vents.

As a mom of 3, we have a bench seat in my second row and I have my kids 3 across. We love this car!! 4 stars for technology because to use Apple car play phone needs to be plugged in. The 3rd row is just two seats so very comfortable. With having my 3 kids, 3 across it gives me a huge trunk space for all the things!

I had this car 2 years and couldn’t get out of it fast enough! A few minor things bothered me the chrome plastic on the window controls were peeling and sharp, the backup camera didn’t work for over a year on and off. It started doing this thing where it shut off completely at a stop sign or light randomly. I am so believe the transmission was starting to fail.

I recently had a 2026 Explorer ST as a loaner car while I had some recalls fixed on my expedition. I only have two kids, but the second row space is not adequate for rear facing car seats. I typically always have my third row down anyways because I only have two kids, but I do not see how anyone would have more than two kids in an explorer. Utilizing the third row takes away your trunk space obviously and I’m unsure how you would even fit a stroller with how big they are these days or additional groceries or sports equipment. I do think this is a much better option for someone with older kids that is out of the stroller and car seat phase. To me it just felt cramped coming from my usual expedition. On another note, while I had the car, the gas was running low with about 30 miles till empty and our driveway has a slight incline. I went to start the car and it would not start. The only thing that made sense was the angle of the car and it not having a ton of gas, but my husband literally had to put the car in neutral to get it down to our flat street before the car would start, which was pretty insane to me. I will say too that my mom bought a brand new 2015 explorer limited and she just recently traded it in for a new 2026 explorer active. She loved it enough to keep it for 10+ years and buy another one. Overall it is a good car I just see it working better for people with older kids or at least kids in forward facing car seats.

Great smaller 3rd row SUV, we have the captain chairs, has a little cup holder thing in middle that’s great, has good ceiling vents in back and plenty of leg room in second row, 3rd row leg room is okay if 2nd row is pushed forward. Drives so well, big but not so big that it’s hard to park.

I just purchased a new 2026 explorer! I have 1 kid, so car seat setup wasn't my primary deciding factor. I know I like to keep cars for the long haul (just got out of my 2016 honda civic I bought in college). I wanted a car that didn't feel big when parking and driving but would comfortably fit my 6'-3" husband and my 3-year-old (who might be that size in the time I own this car). My husband was extremely comfortable in the 2nd row captains. We also love the great ventilation - ceiling vents + an option for lower air that comes out from just past the door (hits you right in the butt in the second-row seats). That is really helping cool off the car in the heat! Coming from a smaller sedan, I love the way the explorer handles and it's "get up and go". Compared to the Pilot and Grand Highlander we test drove it is way zippier.

This has been a fantastic car as our family has grown from 0 kids to almost 3 kids. Easily fits two kids in car seats in the second row. We have had Graco SlimFit 3Lx seats and a Nuna Pipa when they were in an infant seat. I will say the second row middle seat is SMALL and not comfortable for an adult to ride between the car seats. I did it when I had to though. I don’t think it will fit 3 across when our next baby arrives in November, so we will trial my 3yo in the third row since he is ff. However that will really limit trunk space! I also imagine it will be difficult getting him buckled in the third row. This car has been great for us going from zero and now two kids. We’ve taken it on a ton of road trips including with our dog in the back with our suitcases and other baby essentials! We did recently use a Thule bag on top when we had a lot of extra things on a trip. For 0-2 kids this car is great. For 3 kids it is definitely getting tight. I have the XLT trim which has heated seats and steering wheel which is great, and a touch screen comparable with Apple car play as well as normal buttons for air control, radio and volume. It is a great mix of tech and traditional buttons. I really enjoy the inside of the car even if the outside is starting to look dated. Also, ceiling vents!!! Love them. I will say, as an adult I think the third row is more comfortable than the middle bench seat! Overall a great car. Maybe will edit my review once I’ve had 3 kids in it for a while! We are going to try to make it work as long as we can. I also test drove a lot of mid size cars and loved the way the Ford drove the best! It picks up quickly and handles really well, IMO! We also haven’t had any major mechanical issues (140k mi currently), only oil changes and recall fixes. I have loved having this car the past 6 years!

The second row fits three rear-facing car seats across! We currently have two Britax Poplar S seats and a Römer Juni with its base installed in the second row. Even with three car seats, I find it easy to reach the middle seat and buckle my child in. BlueCruise in the Platinum trim is really great for long drives and makes road trips so much easier.

I have actually really loved this car. I liked all the features that I received for the price point and the comfort of it and I genuinely love the drive and feel of it as well. My only issue is just having three kids in it and trying to have enough space but that’s not really the car’s fault! To me, it’s just not the most ideal car for three kids, but we make it work and it’s definitely not unmanageable.

Good car and performs well with 100,00+ miles. Feels like a big car but fills up quickly when traveling with a baby and two large dogs. We are struggling to fit everything we need to safely (not loose in the backseat with the baby).

I need to say - I have NEVER been a Ford Girl, but when I saw the Explorer Tremor I was smitten. I was on the line of needing a mom car but yet still wanting a rugged look and style to it. This knocked it out of the park. I don't know who loves the space more, me or my kids. I am coming from a Tesla Model Y and while yes the fuel is a big change I opted for the 4cyl eco boost engine, as personally I did not need the V6. While I did lose some features (I wanted power folding mirror but fixed glass and massaging seats just did not matter enough to upgrade) One thing I did not want again was leather seat (goodbye to sitting in puddled in the summer) and the combo or microfiber and leather with Ventilation knocks it out of the park. They are incredibly comfortable! My 8 y/o is in backless booster it works perfectly. The 3rd row while they are not as comfortable and feel a bit low to the ground, we personally do not use them on the daily other then then occasional extra friend who is with us or for the dogs ( one pictured). We put a hammock back there for the dogs and it has been perfect! Nailed a Costco haul with the 3rd row down perfectly. Even with the 3rd row up there is still a ton of trunk space that easily fit 4 carry on suit cases plus some extra. The 360 camera is a DREAM which the tesla does not have. Coming from a tesla the tech in any car was a downgrade but I have been impressed with what this has offered so far especially with Google play. We have been able to download YouTube, some games and even prime video as that was huge adjustment leaving the tesla and not being able to watch something while parked waiting around so that was an exciting surprise. Having the double digital screen that shows your navigation in front of you as well as the full screen is a perfect touch. First car bought in 9 years and while that is scary, but If Kelly is a Ford Girly, I figured I can put my trust in them too! I am so happy I did.

Ceiling vents, ceiling vents, ceiling vents. It was a main reason we bought the car. However, the higher trim features you get with this car have also been great - heated steering wheel, air-conditioned seats, and heated seats in the front and second rows, especially. For two kids, the captain's chairs have been nice, but I would have preferred the bench while they were little. The third row is very comfortable and roomy (albeit somewhat difficult to get to; more on that later). We have put every stage of car seat (infant, convertible, high back booster) in every seat and have never had an issue. The negatives: there is no armrest for the driver, and the center console is far away. In the captain's chair version, there is a solid plastic cup holder-type console on the floor in between the seats, making it awkward to step over to get into the third row. It is a higher-up car for little kids to get in and out of in the carpool line. Other than that, though, it's been a great and reliable car. Super low maintenance too.

This car is hearty! With two toddlers, and one on the way, I’m not at all anxious about getting all the kiddos in there. There is some wear and tear on it but it’s held up so great. I do recommend getting some hard plastic floor mat covers for easier cleanup- but otherwise this car is easy to move around in and get clean. A con- I do wish that it was easier to get to the third row without climbing through the middle of the captain seats, and I wish there was more padding in the third row bench seat. But it is perfect for a car seat. Definitely recommend as a reliable and tough ride for growing families!

When we first bought this car in 2021, we got so many compliments on it. Someone even told us they thought it was a Land Rover! We’ve now brought both of our babies home from the hospital in this car, and overall, it has treated our family really well. The second row is very comfortable, although after having our first, I did wish we had chosen a bench seat so I could sit next to him while we were driving. I also had to drive a friend’s daughter around one time, so I had three rear-facing kids in the car. I was able to use a travel car seat in the third row, but it was a tight setup. I had to move the passenger seat all the way forward and position my daughter’s seat as far forward as possible to make the rear-facing seat work in the third row. As far as technology goes, the only thing I really wish it had is wireless Apple CarPlay. We’ve taken several 3–4 hour road trips, and we’ve always had plenty of room for two Pack ’n Plays plus all of our luggage, which has been a huge plus with two kids. I’m hoping to keep my son rear-facing for as long as possible, so we’ll probably need to upgrade to something larger when we get pregnant with number three. But for a family of four, this car has given us plenty of space and has been a reliable, comfortable family car. Overall, we’ve been really happy with it!

I've been driving a 2021 Ford Explorer with black leather seats and second-row captain's chairs, and it has been a great fit for our family. One of the reasons I love it is that it feels like the perfect middle ground between a large SUV and something that's still easy to drive every day. It doesn't feel huge behind the wheel, but it gives us the space we need for kids, sports, road trips, and all the gear that comes with family life. The captain's chairs are probably my favorite feature. They make the cabin feel open and comfortable, and each child has their own space. The third row is actually usable for kids, which isn't always the case in three-row SUVs. What impressed me most is that even with the third row up, I can still fit a stroller in the cargo area. As a mom, that's a huge win because so many vehicles lose nearly all cargo space when all the seats are in use. The black leather interior has held up really well and is easy to clean. I also appreciate all the cup holders, storage spaces, and charging options throughout the cabin. It feels thoughtfully designed for family life. My biggest complaint is the fixed cupholder console between the captain's chairs. It can't be removed, so it blocks the pass-through to the third row. Kids can still get back there, but they have to step around it every time they get in and out. It's one of those little daily inconveniences that becomes more noticeable when you're constantly loading and unloading kids. Overall, the Explorer has been reliable, comfortable, and incredibly functional for our family. If you're looking for a three-row SUV that's easy to drive, has true family-friendly space, and still offers enough cargo room for a stroller with the third row in use, the 2021 Ford Explorer is definitely worth considering.

I drove a minivan for 8 years before I finally got my Explorer! I absolutely love this car! Quite possibly my favorite car I’ve ever had! It’s fun to drive and still feels like I can haul lots of people around. We travel a lot for cheer and my oldest daughter who is in college. I do wish I could pack more in there when we go to the beach (lol) but I may be an overpacker. 😂

I’m 5’8” with one forward facing car seat, one rear facing car seat, and a 10 year old who should ride in the back. Due to the lack of space for a double stroller, I have to fold the 3rd row seats down (10 year old says they’re uncomfortable anyway). He’s in the front seat with me most days. When my husband is with us (he’s 6’5”), we look like clowns coming out of the car. We’re all squished and the leg room isn’t ideal. I’d say this car is more suited for 4 people and 6’ tall adults or less. The trunk space is great as long as you don’t need the 3rd row seats. For what it is, Ford really tried to make the most out of the room. It’s nice to have the bench seat, the gas mileage is better than the bigger cars, and it’s easier to park!

Drives amazing, spacious on the inside with car seats, easy access to 3rd row. Tight fit for a family of 3 with an average size stroller and groceries in the trunk with the 3rd row up. Tech glitched a few times. Reliable and not too expensive to maintain.

We purchased our explorer right before the birth of our second child and it works well for two! We compared it to a few other similar makes and models, but this had the best price point and ceiling vents. We like it but will be looking for a mini van if we have a third.

I always wanted an explorer. That was my “dream” mom car. After having it with 2 kids and 1 on the way, I realize it’s not going to be an easy 3 car with kids. We have captain chairs which makes it difficult when needing to load the trunk because the trunk it tiny when the third row is up. Our currently set up is my 4 year old in the third row, and 1.5 yr old in second row, second seat in 2nd row down, third row seat up next to my toddler. It’ll be interesting to see how long we end up keeping it when number 3 comes along. While I love my car overall it’s not 100% the best option for 3+ kids.

The car has been perfect for our needs. Lots of space for day to day even with 3rd row up but I mostly have it down since we don’t use the 3rd row seats on a daily. I have had multiple trips 1-2 adults (on the smaller side) sit back there and they felt like they had plenty of room for even a 3 hour drive. You do feel the bumps much more back there tho. Ventilation is great throughout the entire vehicle and lots of cup holders. My lower than perfect rating is due to multiple recalls and having sensor issues over and over. When pulling up next to a car in a parking lot it beeps most of the time and have yet to be able to fix it. Even if there’s not a car there often it beeps when parking. I also wish gas tank was a bit bigger. For my daily use it’s fine but on road trips it’s a little bit annoying.

I got my Explorer as my first “mom car.” I really loved it for the first two years, but at the end of year two I started having a lot of electric related issues. The dealership “fixed” the issue twice for thousands of dollars, but there was always a new reason as to what was causing the issues when it started happening again.

I have loved my explorer. We have had a couple major repairs (transmission at 65,000 miles & A/C work at about 55,000 miles) but overall, pretty reliable. Now that my kids are getting older (i.e. taller) it's about time to look for something slightly larger.

Perfect daily driver for mom and medium aged kids (5, 7, 9). Three booster seats used with two in the middle row captains seats and one in third row. All of the bells and whistles you’d want in a car as well as rear vents and rear comfort control. Performance and “fun” drive ability had been better than my previous VW Atlas.

I was SO excited to see the ST model with a 2nd row bench! Even better if for a time I want captains seats the middle seat is removable!! I have a teenager and a 12yr old who sits in the 2nd row in a Britt’s Pinnacle comfortably, I also constantly have multiple teenagers in my 2nd & 3rd row and everyone is comfy! Best car ever!!

I love my car for what it is but I would not recommend the 2016 Explorer to a parent with kids in car seats. Bought this before we had kids and didn’t think about the inflatable seat belts on the captain seats in the second row. That has been frustrating. Had major issues with the water pump. Has an exterior windshield trim recall that hasn’t been able to be fulfilled (been over a year and is back-stocked). Also, the air vents for the second and third row are terrible. They do not work well and are not consistent. I love the size and layout of the car but now having kids, I would absolutely not buy this vehicle. I’m sure newer models are great but I do not recommend the 2016 version.

I am the fun aunt, who takes the nieces/nephews to amusement parks and on weekend trips. With their ages 2-15, I needed the versatility of a mom car, but also didnt want to be rolling up as the single Pringle I am in a mini van. This gives me the flexibility to throw kayaks on the roof(and inside, on occasion) or pack the kids in for an adventure. I am a private chef and heavily involved in the food service industry, so I also love having the ability to fit just about anything might need in it. Definitely the best car!

absolutely LOVE my Ford Explorer ST! It’s the perfect combination of sporty, stylish, comfortable, and family-friendly. As a mom of two, I wanted something that felt spacious and practical without sacrificing the look, power, and fun of driving—and the Explorer ST checks every box. There is plenty of room for both kids, all of their stuff, and everything that comes along with family life. The interior is comfortable and thoughtfully designed, and so many of the features make everyday driving with two kids incredibly convenient. At the same time, it still feels sporty and powerful and is genuinely fun to drive.

Our family spends a lot of time in the car. Between work and school, we commute more than 60 miles each day, so we needed something spacious, comfortable and equipped with good technology, including Apple CarPlay and a larger screen. The 2026 Ford Explorer struck the perfect balance for our family of three. We were able to keep our monthly payment relatively low, and our brand-new Explorer came in at a significantly lower price than several similarly sized SUVs we considered, including the Traverse and Ascent. So far, I absolutely love it! My one complaint is that the engine can take a little time to accelerate when getting onto the freeway, but otherwise it has been a great fit for our family and our daily commute. One thing worth noting about the 2026 model is the panoramic glass roof. While it gives the car a really open, bright feel, it does not open. Our salesperson shared that Ford plans to bring back an opening panoramic sunroof for the 2027 model, so that may be worth considering if a functioning sunroof is important to you. Overall, we’ve been really happy with our Explorer. It gives us the space, technology and comfort we wanted without having to spend significantly more for a comparable three-row SUV.

I love my Explorer ST! I actually had a 2017 Explorer then 2020 Explorer ST, traded it for a Jeep Grand Cherokee and hated it, so I ended up going right back to an Explorer ST😂 It’s super comfortable and I love the captain chairs and the sun shades for the kids and the screen. It’s sporty and actually fast which I love because I don’t like feeling like I’m driving a big slow mom car. BlueCruise is also one of my favorite features! I do wish it had a little better self driving capability though but the only other option would be a Tesla for that. My only real complaint is the cup holders in row 2. I definitely think those could have been better, especially with kids and all their cups. Overall I really love it! It has everything I need for the kids but still looks sporty and is fun to drive. Side note- DO not get a sunroof they are known to leak. I was sad to not have one but it hasn’t bothered me as much as I thought it would. Also there are different job numbers for the 2025 models. Job 1 came with all of the upgrades I have such as 2nd row window shades, spare tire, power tilt starting, leg opening for trunk, charging pad. As the job number went up they began removing some things so double check for these things if they are important for you to have.

I wish the cup holders in the second row of the floor held bigger cups and were more sturdy. The trunk is average sized but has some storage but overall great for a midsize SUV.

We moved from an Expedition to an Explorer. The style is top-notch, the captains chairs in the second row gives us more space to move around with little ones. Fits car seats well. Third row is great. Trunk space has been great! I love the hidden storage as well.

We love our Explorer, it is a smooth ride. Just wish the trunk space would be bigger with the third row up!

The Perfect Sports-Parent Rig with a Couple of Hiccups- The Ford Explorer Platinum is a stylish, ultra-comfortable mid-size SUV that feels custom-built for a small sports family—though mine is currently sidelined at the dealership. After putting it through its paces, it easily hits the mark for daily parenting duties, but a couple of quality control issues have kept it from a flawless score. The Good: Comfort, Tech, and Perfect Size for Sports Families: If you have one child in sports, this SUV is the sweet spot. It offers plenty of room to haul bulky gear bags and equipment without feeling like you are piloting a massive, unmanageable tank. First-Class Comfort: The seats are incredibly comfortable. With massage, heat and cooled options. Excellent Cabin Usability: Ford nailed the family convenience features. There are plenty of cup holders to go around, and the integrated cabin technology is intuitive and incredibly easy to use. Sharp Styling: The exterior design is a major selling point. It has a bold, premium aesthetic that stands out in the school drop-off line. The Bad: Fuel Economy and Build Quality- Thirsty Engine: While the performance is smooth, the fuel mileage could definitely be better. If you have a heavy foot or spend a lot of time idling at sports complexes, you will notice the fuel gauge dropping faster than you'd like. Moon Roof Defect: The biggest disappointment is that the car is currently back at the dealership. I noticed a distinct, annoying wind noise coming from the fixed moon roof at highway speeds. High-Pressure Leak: To make matters worse, the moon roof seal failed completely during a high-pressure car wash, resulting in water leaking directly into the cabin. (See photos for what dealership did to stop further leaking while waiting on parts) The Verdict-The Ford Explorer Platinum is a fantastic family vehicle on paper and a joy to sit in, but Ford needs to tighten up its factory quality control.

I love my explorer! We’ve had it for 4 years now and we haven’t had any major issues with it at all. Only regular maintenance. The second row is roomy enough for the car seats. We’ve put my toddler in the 3rd row as well and she fits back there great. For the size the 3rd row is spacious enough to fit 2 adults. Or 1 adult and a car seat. I only have great things to say about it!

While we enjoy the comfort and size of this car - since buying it new we have spent close to $20k fixing and maintaining it. For this reason I wouldn’t recommend it for reliability and cost for ownership.

Explorers are great cars for smaller families who don’t travel too much. Traveling gets difficult with more than 4 people due to the trunk space not being very big. Would love car seat tilts, wireless CarPlay, but love the keyless entry ford offers.

I love my 2023 ford explorer! I don’t have kids yet, but I help my sister with her 3 kids. I am able to get 2 in car seats in the captain chairs in the second row and the older one in the third row. If I don’t have the kids, I put the third row down and enjoy all the trunk space. I have the timberline edition and love the interior.

This has worked really well for our family. I currently have a forward facing carseat on each outboard seat of the second row, and a booster seat in between. I love the built in sunshades. When we have extra kids in the car I move one of the forward facing car seats into the middle seat of the second row and load the back three seats with boosters, then I can put the empty outboard seat into position to add a booster or leave it flipped forward to make it easier to get folks into the third row. I really, really appreciate that the third row only has two seats.

The 2020 Ford Explorer is my favorite car I’ve ever owned! My husband is 6’ 4” and the second row captain’s chairs had plenty of legroom regardless if he was in the driver or passenger seat. The third row seats were power folding which gave me extra cargo space quickly and easily. It had wired CarPlay which was kind of a bummer, but it still worked great. The 2.3L engine had plenty of power and made the Explorer really fun to drive - especially in sport mode! I also really enjoyed the adaptive cruise control. The exterior styling is gorgeous, and the interior functionality is just outstanding!

Comfortable ride, but the trunk and third row are small. With 2 under 2, it felt like we already needed more storage space for a road trip. Rear facing car seats fit comfortably in the second row and very spacious front and passenger seat area. Lots of cup holders!!!

Pros: This is my sporty cool mom car. I have 2 littles and we got the 2nd row bench and live with the 3rd row down. We have lots of trunk space and enough space to rotate both car seats and load the kids. It’s got more than enough space for us on a daily basis though I admit on roadtrips I wish we had a minivan. Gas mileage is decent for its class. Cons: it has been in the shop more than we like. We had to have an axel replaced and a rear pinion seal replaced. Apparently the pinion seal is leaking again but this time it isn’t a big enough deal that our mechanic was concerned. He said it’s very common on ford explorers. Also had another computer issue that the dealer had to fix which was $$$. So overall just not anything I’m used to coming from my Toyota Corolla. Also, knocked the interior rating down because the leather work on the inside is sloppy. I made the mistake of noticing that they cut the leather too short around some of the plastic trim and now I can’t forget it and it kinda makes my eye twitch.

Our family has owned 2 Ford Explorers - 2017 and 2025. The Explorer continues to be our favorite due to handling, safety and comfort as well as car seat setup. The 2025 tech upgrades have been great! We love the interior styling even on the active trim level. Having two good size seats in the 3rd row are helpful and good overall for car seats. The 3rd row can be uncomfortable to sit in for long drives as an adult. Overall, a family of 4 fits comfortably for day to day life and enjoy the space/flexibility it provides.

We got this car while pregnant with our first and drove it until the end of our pregnancy with our third. It was great until then when we knew we needed something bigger. We had captains chairs in the second row and it was nice to have space for stuff between the kids. It accommodated their car seats well. The third row on the other hand was difficult to use. We mostly kept it folded down for more trunk space (very little trunk space with the third row up), but when any adult needed to ride back there, they entered and exited through the trunk, and leg space was tight. The technology was good for the time but by now it seems antiquated.
