Features We Love

I really like this Highlander for what it is—it’s comfortable, the hybrid is efficient, and the second row works really well for everyday family use. It’s not the most flexible setup, but if you’re working with two car seats, it actually does a lot right.

  • Hybrid powertrain option: great fuel efficiency without needing to plug in
  • Lower anchors on both second row captain’s chairs: two full LATCH positions make installs straightforward and easy to access
  • Tether anchors in all second row seats: gives you solid options for forward-facing installs where you’ll use them most
  • Comfortable second row spacing: plenty of room to load kids and buckle without feeling cramped
  • Rear-facing seat fits behind driver: works even with the seat set for an adult, which is a big win
  • Sliding second row seats: helps you adjust space depending on your setup
  • Heated second row seats + sunshades: small things that make a big difference for kids
  • Ceiling vents in both rear rows: airflow is really good, especially for rear-facing seats
Car Mom Review

The Exterior

Clean, Slightly Basic Design That Still Feels Elevated

I think the Highlander looks nice overall, but it’s not the most exciting design out there. It leans more clean and slightly upscale than bold, and I do think it looks better from some angles than others.

Front End Feels Simple Compared to Competitors

The front is where it falls a little flat for me. The grille has a clean chrome surround and the headlights are pretty standard, nothing super modern or futuristic. Toyota did update the LED headlamps for 2021, which helps with visibility, but visually it still feels a bit basic compared to others in this category.

Side Profile Feels More Premium

From the side, I actually like it more. It gives off a slightly more elevated, almost Lexus-like feel, especially with the chrome window trim and the overall shape. The doors are large, which makes getting kids in and out easier, and the proportions feel practical for everyday use.

Back End Is the Best Angle

I think the rear is the strongest part of the design. The wraparound tail lights look more intentional, and the wide liftgate makes loading strollers and gear easier. Overall, it’s not flashy, but it’s clean, functional, and easy to live with.

Slightly Basic Design That Still Feels Elevated

First Row

Comfortable Seats and a Driving Position That Feels Easy

The first row feels really comfortable right away. The seats are soft, the materials feel nice, and overall it just feels like a place you can sit for a while. Visibility is pretty good too, even with a full car, which I always pay attention to.

Large Touchscreen with Simple, Usable Controls

The tech is one of the highlights up here, and it’s actually easy to use.

  • Large touchscreen display: feels upgraded on this trim and very user-friendly
  • Physical buttons + knobs: quick access to audio and climate without digging through menus
  • Heads-up display: shows speed, navigation, and direction right on the windshield

Everything is pretty intuitive, which matters when you’re driving with kids.

Storage Works, But the Layout Isn’t Perfect

You have what you need, but it’s not my favorite setup.

  • Two cupholders + front tray: easy for everyday use
  • Wireless charger placement: takes up space and makes the console feel smaller
  • Center console: deep but not as wide as I’d like

It’s functional, just not the most optimized.

Everyday Features That Make Driving Easier

There are a lot of little things that add up.

Heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, and auto hold are all here, and those are the features you end up using all the time without thinking about them.

Second Row

Lower Anchors Only on Second Row Captain’s Chairs, Single Tether in Third Row Middle

  • Lower anchors: two sets, both on the second row captain’s chairs
  • Top tether anchors: two in the second row + one in the third row middle seat
  • Limitation: only one usable tether position in the third row, which really restricts forward-facing setups

This is where you start to feel the constraints compared to other SUVs in this category.

Wide, Comfortable Spacing Makes Installs Easier

The actual space in this row is a plus.

There’s enough room between the seats that you’re not fighting for space when installing or buckling. It feels comfortable, even with multiple kids getting in and out.

  • Good knee and headroom: works well for adults and growing kids
  • Rear-facing fit: doable behind the driver with decent clearance

Sliding Seats Help, But Access Is Limited with Car Seats Installed

The seats are on tracks, which helps with flexibility.

You can slide them forward to create more third row space, but access is still not great once car seats are installed.

  • Fold-and-slide function: works best without car seats
  • No car seat tilt: makes third row access more difficult

Amenities Make This Row Comfortable for Kids

You do get a lot of nice features back here.

  • Sunshades: great for keeping light off kids
  • Heated seats: nice bonus for passengers
  • USB-C ports + vents: good airflow and charging access

Overall Setup Works Best for Two Car Seats

This is a solid second row for two kids in car seats. Once you try to push beyond that, especially with forward-facing seats, the limitations in tether placement and third row access become much more noticeable.

Third Row

Three Seats Back Here, But Best for Two

This third row technically fits three, but it’s much more realistic for two passengers. It just feels tight once you’re actually back there.

Limited Space with Elevated Floor

The floor sits higher than the second row, so your knees are pushed up, which isn’t the most comfortable for longer rides. Headroom is also tight, especially for adults.

Works for Kids, Not Ideal for Car Seats

You can use this row, but it’s not where I’d prioritize car seats.

  • Tighter width: harder to fit multiple seats comfortably
  • Best use: occasional seating or older kids

Amenities Are Still Covered

Even though it’s tight, you still get the basics.

  • Ceiling vents: good airflow back here
  • Cupholders: built into both sides

Access Requires Planning

Getting back here depends on how you have the second row set up.

You’ll use the fold-and-slide function, but if you have car seats installed, it can make access more difficult.

No items found.
Three seats in the third row, but it's best for two.

Trunk

Smaller Trunk Behind the Third Row

This is not a big trunk when all three rows are in use. It works for a few everyday items, but it fills up quickly if you’re carrying more than the basics.

Works for Light Daily Use, Not Larger Gear

You can fit things like groceries or smaller bags, but there’s not a lot of extra room. There aren’t many storage features back here either, which makes it feel a little limited overall.

Folding the Third Row Opens Up the Space

Once you put the third row down, it becomes much more usable.

  • Split-folding third row: easy to adjust for more cargo
  • More continuous cargo area: better for larger items
  • Added protection with cargo mat: helps keep the back of the seats covered when folded down

Overall Feels More Basic Than Some Competitors

It gets the job done, but it’s not the most functional or flexible trunk setup in this category.

‍

Safety

The Highlander is a really solid choice when it comes to safety, and that’s a big reason people keep buying it. It earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating, which is the highest designation from IIHS.

Seatbelt Pretensioners Located in the Front Seats

This is one of those details I always like to call out.

  • Seatbelt pretensioners: located in the front seats (driver and front passenger)
  • What they do: tighten the seatbelt instantly during a serious crash, side impact, or rollover to hold you in place
  • When they activate: severe frontal or side collisions and rollovers—not minor impacts

This is built-in protection that works with the airbags to reduce movement in a crash.

Airbags Cover All Rows

You’re getting a full system here, not just front coverage.

  • Front airbags: driver and passenger
  • Knee + seat cushion airbags: added front seat protection
  • Side + curtain airbags: extend through multiple rows for head protection

Standard Driver Assistance Features Handle Daily Driving

You also get a full set of systems that help prevent accidents in the first place.

  • Pre-collision braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane tracing assist
  • Blind spot monitoring
Car Seat Setup

Two Second Row LATCH Positions, Three Third Row Tether Anchors

This is a good, straightforward setup, but it’s not the most flexible if you’re trying to do a lot of car seats.

  • Lower anchors: two full sets, both on the second row captain’s chairs
  • Top tether anchors: one for each third row seat (three total)
  • No additional lower anchors: limits how many easy installs you can do

Second Row Is Where Car Seats Work Best

This is where I would put most of your seats.

The spacing is good, so you’re not fighting for room, and installs feel pretty straightforward. Rear-facing and forward-facing seats both fit well, and it’s easy to get kids in and out.

  • Wide spacing between seats: makes buckling and loading easier
  • Rear-facing clearance: works, but larger seats can push the front row forward

Third Row Is More Limited for Car Seats

You can use it, but it’s not ideal.

  • Seatbelt installs only: no lower anchors back here
  • Tighter width: harder to fit multiple seats comfortably
  • Best for: occasional use or older kids

Access Depends on Your Setup

Getting to the third row takes some planning.

You’ll use the fold-and-slide function on the second row, but if you have car seats installed, that can block access. You can adjust the seats forward to help, but it’s not the easiest setup if you’re regularly using the third row.

Overall Car Seat Takeaway

This works really well for two car seats and everyday use, especially in the second row. Once you start needing three or more seats, that’s where the limitations show up.

I rented this car for a month and hated it for kids! None of the seatbelt buckles are easy for kids to use. My kids are completely independent in my Honda Odyssey but could not do it in the Highlander, even after a month. The back is small. Adult passengers in the second row hit their head multiple times. It may be a good grandparents car as the front is pretty spacious and well designed. The trunk is tiny with the 3rd row up and the captains chairs slide forward and back but seems cheap second row quality. Drove well!

We love our Highlander hybrid! We take road trips throughout the year that range from 5-8 hour trips to 2 week trips across many states. We are a family of four, so the captains chairs have been wonderful. Our Highlander is comfortable, fuel efficient, and holds all our cargo well. We usually have a bike or two with us, too! We use the third row on occasion and I (5’7” adult) can fit in the middle seat comfortably between two booster seats. We usually have grandparents in the captains chairs.

Love this car! Love how it drives! So smooth! Sucks for 3rd row access. My husband now drives it primarily and I miss it so much. Purchased when we only had 1 kid and it was perfect. We have twins in second row bench (love), and 6 year old in 3rd row middle seat. Car seat flexibility could be much better. Wish the car/bench was a little wider for 3 across. We've made it work if we have to have all 3 kids in the car, but not ideal and no trunk space with 3rd row up.

My two kids were 8 and 10 years old when I bought my 2021 Toyota Highlander Limited. Overall, I think it’s a great car. It has been a 10/10 for reliability, which is really important to me. At the time, I was too scared to get a full-size SUV, and Toyota doesn’t really have a great option for one. I love Toyota for their reliability, so the Highlander seemed like a good fit. I am 5'2", so this car fits me very well. Overall, I would say it’s comfortable and has nice features like Apple CarPlay and heated and cooled seats. One thing I want in every car is a tire pressure screen that actually lists the PSI for each tire. Believe it or not, that is not standard in every car! I don’t like when a car tells you there is an issue with a tire but doesn’t actually show you the PSI. As I mentioned, my kids were 8 and 10 years old when I bought the car. The second row has been perfect for our needs, and they are now 14 and 15 years old. As for the third row, when I was driving around elementary and middle schoolers, it worked just fine. But now that I’m driving around high schoolers, the third row is not the best for three bigger kids. Is it possible? Sure, but it can be very tight. My biggest complaint would be the trunk space when you have the third row up. There is very limited room. So, if you plan to have the third row up all the time and need trunk space for sports equipment, a stroller, groceries, etc., this may not be the best car for you. Technology-wise, it may not be the most high-tech vehicle, but it has all the fundamentals, which are good enough for me. The Toyota service department in my area has also been a 10/10. Making appointments online is easy, and I love the visual inspection report they send. I can look through everything and pick and choose which services I want done and which ones I want to wait on. Overall, I think it's a great car for a family with two kids.

The exterior styling of the highlander is a miss, unless it is the XSE trim, which unfortunately means you give up a lot of nice to have features... Driving the highlander felt more like driving a large sedan in my opinion. I liked the infotainment! Decent gas mileage, a pretty awful 3rd row (would be horrible for daily use), but one of the better midsize SUVs in my opinion.

Love the Highlander! We have bucked seats and it has worked so well for two large car seats in the third row. Currently pregnant with my third and have to move my 5 year old to the third row which I’m a little nervous about because it is pretty tight back there. With the third row up the truck is huge! Over all love this car!

I love this vehicle for my family of 3 (one child). I could also see this being a wonderful family of 4 vehicle but could not imagine fitting a larger family. Shout out for removable headrests! I Love the way the Chicco MyFit installs. I will say, now that we are moving to booster territory, it’s a lot harder. The seatbelt buckles are kind of tucked away and hard to access. We currently have a Nuna Aace and it’s so difficult to buckle! Going to try the PegPerego Flex 120 (thanks for the recommendation). I am hoping that will help. The bench seat is where it’s at! I just fold the third row down for all the trunk space. I also find this car to be far more comfortable than my Subaru Ascent and in the running with the Honda Passport. Overall this vehicle works really well for our little family and is fantastic for us!

We have taken this car everywhere and before this one, we had another Highlander. The technology is finicky and the CarPlay has to be plugged in three or four times for it to actually work. My 2 children have plenty of room in their car seats. They love the air vents and that they can adjust it. We have enough room for suit cases for a week. At times, we will put the partial third row up for the puppy. We always have enough room for her crate and all of her essentials. Cup holders are not ideal. I have to be careful about what kind of cup I put in the front because it’s narrow and then the ones in the doors cannot fit tall cups. My kids’ car seats have cupholders but when we need an extra one, we put down the middle console and it’s perfect for them. This car is my daily driver but when we go on road trips I am typically in the passenger seat. I live on a country road and they all will drive on this car is amazing. I love being able to down shift to feel comfortable on my driveway in the snow and ice. Overall great family friendly car.

Great, comfortable car. Happy to have third row option although I feel that if you need a third row day to day as opposed to only sometimes, you may want to shop for a larger car. Using the third row significantly reduces trunk space. Second row is most comfortable with seat all the way back on sliders making third row very small. Wish second row had car seat tilt.

While I love the dependability of Toyota I do feel the interior is very dated coming from a 2013 to a 2019, it felt like a step back in time. The cup holders in the front are poorly place so one hits the dash if your cup is too tall. The middle row slides forwards and back making it handy for adults to sit in 3rd row if car seats are in the way. As someone who travels with pets having the third row lay totally flat without a huge gap is ideal for hauling pets with kids.

Good/quality car overall. Like all the amenities. Only things to keep in mind is the 3rd row is super tight and when up the trunk is small. We have been able to fit 7 adults for a short ride. Can fit two carry ons in trunk when the 3rd row is up. If you don’t often need the 3rd row then lots of trunk space.

I had the captains chairs and always keeping the third row down was perfect for us. We only had a third row passenger once and it was fine for an average sized adult on a short trip. The best part is it kept me safe and uninjured in a head-on collision.

Love the heated/vented seats, heated steering wheel, safety feature (but do wish it had blind spot cameras instead of just rear). The screen can be little annoying to navigate at times (Sometime you have to go through a few buttons to get where you want, when it seems like a short cut to the app home screen would be easier). Great space with the third row down; enough space for groceries, medium boxes, etc with third row up. Love the second row vents! Overall comfortable ride. The exterior is a little boring to me, almost bordering on mini van. I wish it had a little more, but that just might be how Toyota designs.

Second row has captains chairs, air vents and sun shades which were my big three must haves. The third row is always down so we have room for our stroller, groceries and now our travel potty. We recently took the boys on an 8 hour trip and we had enough room for the pack & play, a strider bike, our bags and two yeti coolers! I do think having a roof rack/roof storage would be better but overall impressed with how much we can fit in the back.

Car reliability and performance were great. The third row is basically non-existent for children and wouldn't attempt adults. Had 2 rear facing car seats with no issues. Bench option and middle seat it tight, I doubt 3 across friendly.

This car is a typical Toyota in that it’s reliable. The interior design is average with the technology being nice but not anything crazy. The third row is essentially trunk space only. Don’t buy this car if you’re looking for extra seating. We have the bucket seats which I thought I would love, but hate. Both my kids are in car seats so the bucket seats are pushed all the way back making the leg room for the third row non-existent. With the bucket seats, we don’t have a middle seat (obviously) so we can never have an extra person in our vehicle… like an in law, friend etc. I am not tall so the leg room is fine for me with both FF and RF car seats, but was cramped for my husband who is 6’. Now both kids are FF so that issue is obsolete. Currently, this car works for us 90% of the time. It is a hybrid which I love so I will be keeping it for some time. The maintenance is low and it is reliable. But if you’re looking for a bigger car with a functioning third row, this isn’t it.

Great car for moms of 2 younger kids; would be tight for 3 kids! I traded into this car from a Lexus and opted for the Premium trim to keep some of the creature comforts and elevated touches. Love the vehicle and will keep for another few years before looking again!

Toyota is truly one of the few brands that are truly reliable. I personally love Toyotas and will always be a Toyota girlie. The Highlander has been a great car for our family. I bought it when I was newly pregnant with my second baby. Now fast forward to the present and we have 3 kids now. Looking back I would have waited and gotten a mini van or larger SUV for our growing family. The third row in the Highlander is very cramped and narrow. We tried to put my oldest in the third row before my baby was born and he was pretty cramped himself, plus there was no easy way to get him buckled in every time. So we changed out our car seats for my oldest 2 so we could do 3 across. It has been working out fine but the bigger they get the more cramped the car gets. We are holding out for a new car because no car payments is so nice. If you plan on having no more than 2 kids I would say this is the perfect car for you! Anymore than 2 I would go with a larger SUV or Minivan.

This car works great for our family of 4 and occasional car pooling. Love the hybrid and the gas mileage we get! The third row is definitely small but kids can fit back there for occasional short trips. Would not get this if we had more kids! But love it for what we have!

This car is a beast. The third row is an emergency use third row really. Good in a pinch if you often have an extra adult or couple of kids around but really not defensible for every day use. Limited trim level on Toyota is always worth it - ac seats, 360 cameras, window shades, radar cruise, heated wheel/mirrors etc. if I had to order it again, I wouldn't do captain chairs in 2nd row. On long road trips, having to hop in the back seat with the kids for lunch, bottles, comfort, etc would have been considerably easier.

Great car for 2 growing backs in the middle row and lots of room for dogs or sports equipment. It’s older so low tech but has enough of the basics to still connect our phone and use a back up camera. Nearing 160,000 miles but running great.

I have really liked my Highlander- it drives well, it doesn’t have high technology but I prefer that and it’s reliable. It is not great of more than 2 car seats though and while I have 3 boosters now and it works, as my kids are growing we need something with more space. Great two kid car- wouldn’t recommend for more

Overall I love this car. It fits everything I need and my family can grow into it. The third row is a little tight, but as someone who rarely uses it I am ok with that. Trunk space is great even with the 3rd row up and there are ceiling vents in the 2nd and 3rd rows, which were both big selling points for me.

It's a great family car! We havent had any maintainence issues where the car was in the shop for an extended amount of time. The XLE has great perks- sunroof, integrated sun shades in the 2nd row, and leather seats. In 2025 we packed our whole life including 2 kids and a dog into this car for a 1000+ mile road trip and it was great! The third row is pretty tight for an adult, but the dog (45lbs) in her hound hammock fit back there fine. The car fit everything we needed. The one downside is the map is set for 2018 roads and to update it, you need to buy a SD card to plug into the car. That's fine with me, I prefer using Google maps on my phone.

When we first got this car and only had 2 kids it was nice. Gave us a lot of truck space and the kids and parents were comfortable. Now having 3 kids it feels very tight for space. The second row isn't doable with 3 car seats/ booster seats. Third row has 1 teether in the middle. So you obstruct your view from the back. Also if you use the third row it's extremely tight for adults no matter if you're tall or short.

This car is great for a smaller family. Our teenagers don’t fit in the back row and the car seats have to go in the captain chairs so it doesn’t work great for our whole family. So while it is a 7 seater it isn’t truly that for us! The tech isn’t intuitive on the screen and you have to press lots of buttons. The 2023 changed to a v4 with turbo it is much louder than before. My parents have a 2021 and it in a lot of ways we like that better

We bought our 2018 Toyota Highlander SE brand new, and overall, it has been a really great family car. It has served us very well over the years and has been reliable, comfortable, easy to drive, and gets good gas mileage for its size. We really haven't had many mechanical issues at all. One minor frustration has been the battery. It seems like we've had to replace it more often than I would expect, and it takes a specific battery that isn't always easy to find at places like Walmart. We've typically had to get it through the dealership, and replacements have been around $200-$300. Safety has been a huge positive for me. I was rear-ended by a truck hard enough that the truck was totaled, while thankfully everyone in our Highlander was fine and our vehicle had significantly less damage. That experience definitely made me appreciate how safe and solid the Highlander feels. My biggest complaint now that my kids are getting older is the size of the third row. It's pretty small and really best suited for younger kids, but at the same time, it's not especially convenient when you're dealing with car seats. Once kids are old enough to be out of car seats, they quickly get tall enough that the third row starts feeling cramped. If I were buying for my family at our current stage, I would probably want something with a little more room. Otherwise, there is a lot I've loved about this car. It has plenty of get-up-and-go, good safety features, and is very easy to get in and out of. I especially loved the built-in window shades and running boards when my kids were little. Those small features ended up being incredibly useful. After owning it since 2018, I can say it's been a dependable, practical, and safe family vehicle. We've gotten a lot of good years out of it with very few problems, and I would absolutely buy a Highlander again.

Rented the Highlander Platinum AWD. Enjoyed the large screen (which can be split to have multiple platforms visible at once) and controls were easy to use and find. Second row had captains chairs which made for a roomier ride- nice rear climate controls and a bonus with heated rear seats. The third row was not ideal, although there are 3 seatbelts it’s best for 2 littles back there. Overall nice car- would recommend- only thing I would have changed- comfier seating. Felt like the seat were pretty flat, but that seems typical unless you buy a more luxury brand.

Perfect car for 2 kids or less! I have a toddler and a baby and have plenty of room. There is a lot of trunk space with the third row down. It fits 2 car seats great, but you are not able to fit 3 car seats across the 2nd row. I love the design of the interior and exterior! It runs very well and we’ve had no issues with it! Overall a great car!

I love this car. Disclosure- we have the hybrid and I love how it drives. However, we never use the third row. It stays folded down and we use it as trunk space. We have an infant car seat and a rear-facing convertible car seat installed in a second-row bench. I’ve had to sit in between them and it’s doable but very tight. The third row is so tight on the legs that it’s really not functional for an adult.

I’ve had my Highlander hybrid for 5 years now. I love it. It is a smooth ride with very little road noise. Driver seating is comfortable. I have captain’s chairs in the second row which are nice. The third row is very cramped. My kids even complain about riding back there. As far as reliability this car is awesome. I’ve replaced tires and done regular maintenance, that’s it. It just rolled over to 80,000 and she just keeps going. This car also does amazing in the snow, I’ve never had problems with it. Overall I recommend it, just beware the the 3rd row isn’t the best

The Chevy traverse has a lot of space. But the interior is very basic and even the upgrades feel a little cheap. But it was a good mom car option for me

I do love this vehicle so far! I’ve had it 9 months and mainly wanted the 3rd row if we had my nieces and nephews or friends but primarily it is for my husband, 2 littles and me. The gas mileage is great at 27.4/gal especially after having armadas before this. I will say as far as space and comfort, armada beats this but this is great for a small suv. I have a 19 and 20 year-old too so I like that I have the option for them to be comfortable. They are riding with me.

Such a great car! From road tripping with friends to putting the seats down to carry big things! It’s practical, pretty and sporty! I have bucket seats in the middle row that are very comfortable and three seats in the third row.

I’m currently driving my THIRD Toyota Highlander and I always recommend! I drive 35-40k miles a year so it feels like I live in my car. I’ve driven a Highlander when I didn’t have kids and now I have one with a 4yr old & 6mo old. The only reason it’s not a complete 5 stars is the 3rd row really falls through for me as extra seating with friends/cousins riding with us. The 3rd row is not car seat/ booster friendly at all and the leg room is minimal.

My family has enjoyed this car and plan to drive it "until the wheels fall off." It has been super reliable with consistent maintenance. We've driven this car literally all around the country in just 5 years, which explains the higher than normal mileage at this point of it's life, and have never had an issue. I have 2 small kids and it has worked for us. We currently do not need the 3rd row, have only used it maybe twice, so I just keep those seats down for more trunk space. I know the 3rd row and trunk space can be an issue being that it's on the smaller side, but this stage of life it has worked for us. It has the right amount of safety/tech features that fit naturally and comfortably. My only regret is getting black because I underestimated how dirty it can look so quickly. However, I got the black out emblem package and love how that makes it look.

This car is great for those that don’t need everyday third row use. The second row was only comfortable with captains chairs. The reliability and gas mileage is excellent though so those were big pluses!

We love the way this car drives. It has functioned so well for our family. Now with 3 kids getting bigger and carpooling others we definitely need something bigger. It functions great and when we travel we take my husband’s car or use our turtle top. I have always had a Toyota (Corolla, 4Runner and now Highlander). The reliability is unmatched!

Excellent car for 2 growing kids. Both kids were in car seats when I first got this vehicle. It was easy to get them in and out of and with the bench seats, someone could easily get in the third row, if needed. Trunk space is doable with the third row up, but amazing with the third row down. Drives beautifully and is super reliable. The only thing I really don't like is that Apple Carplay can only be used with a USB cord and the charger in the middle console is a bit funky!

I loved this car as a driver and for the looks but man was it a bad choice for a mom car! I made the mistake Kelly always talks about (she wasn’t around to advise me at the time!) and bought this car when I was pregnant with my first. It had captains chairs and worked just fine for a 1 kid family. Single stroller fit in the back. We only used 3rd row on rare occasions when family was in town or for short rides w friends. With second kid, third row access became almost impossible and our double stroller only fit w 3rd row down. Third kid was realllllly incovnenient, he sat in booster in third row (on had tether on outboard seats). He had to climb through to 3rd row and buckle himself. Nothing fit in the trunk. I could only take 2 umbrella strollers for my younger kids which was really inconvenient. Upgrading to a minivan was the best decision I ever made but I do miss the drive and look of my Highlander. Great for 1 kid and if having 2 kids get bench seat to safely put 3rd row down. It was extremely reliable. Never had any issues at all.

This car is able to fit three car seats comfortably. Only downside is if the third row is utilized there is no trunk space. The tech is very basic but I am ok with using my phone on a holder. The drive is great, saves on gas and has held up well for 6 years.

I love my Toyota Highlander Hybrid for two kids. It's big enoughh but still fits in my garage. What I will say is the 3rd row is CRAMPED. It'll be nice to have as my kids get older and can sit back there, but for now it really functions as a two-row car. I do love putting the 3rd row down for extra trunk space. It has worked very well for me and my family. I originally upgraded from a RAV4 when my son was little because that car did not have rear vents like the Highlander does. Would definitely recommend for a smaller family!

Soon to be mom of 2 (first is 2 yrs old) and we have LOVED this car. Previously drove a Nissan Rogue (also loved). My husband and I are both tall people (I'm 5'9", he is 6'4") and we are both very comfortable sitting in front of the Baby Jogger City Turn rear-facing carseat. With the third row down we have plenty of room for a full-size stroller and suitcases for when we take road trips. The drive is quiet on the highway. Will report back once we have a second carseat in the second row!

The Toyota Highlander is a very dependable car. It fits a family of 4 comfortably but a rear facing car seat will impact leg room in the front seat. If you have zero car seats or forward facing, front row leg room is not impacted. The third row is not ideal for use and there is very little trunk space when it is up. This car is great for a family of 3 or 4.

My family loved the Highlander for 7 years and it is my favorite car to have owned so far. We had no issues at all for the length that we owned the vehicle. We only have one child, but also have a Labrador retriever, so the space was great for road trips fitting everything we needed and more. We had the SE trim with captains chairs and loved the options it gave us when driving others around. The third row was a little small for someone taller to fit super comfortably but for smaller adults, or kids, it was great. The Highlander had a good amount of trunk space with the third row up and a ton when the seats were down. This was a great car for our family and definitely recommend it to others if you are wanting a reliable, comfortable and nice looking family car.

I have neverrrr had to have this car in the shop except for routine maintenance! It was fine for 2 kids (the middle seat in the second row is abysmal) but with 3 we are bursting at the seams. The car seat setup in the 3rd row forced my oldest into a booster, which his weight is fine for, but I would ideally still keep him in a harness. We plan to upgrade soon, but are trying to ride it as long as we can so we can pay close to cash for a larger SUV. If you’re looking for a reliable car that will keep its resale value, and can live with extremely low tech, less than ideal car seat setup, and it being a little tight on occasion with kids, the car would be perfect for you!

I have three kids and two large dogs. I was hoping this could be our family, all the time car. However, once we got it home, it’s way too small. If we use the third row (which we have to with three kids) you can only put a car seat in the middle of the third row, making the rest of the third row almost unusable. It’s very difficult to climb into the third row to strap in a kid in a car seat. And with the third row up, the trunk space is extremely small. I love Toyota for their reliability and affordability, but this is a tough car for three young kids. We use it as our “spare car” now, keep the third row down, and use it when we’re only driving two kids. I would almost rather have a RAV 4, to have three across and decent trunk space.

This is a great car for a 2 kid family. Spacious 2nd row and lots of cargo space with the 3rd row folded down. An adult can’t fit comfortably in the 3rd row, but it’s a great option to put bolstered kids back there if needed.

As a mom of one, this car has worked really well for our family. We keep the car seat behind the passenger seat and typically leave the third row down to maximize trunk space. My husband is 6’2” and feels comfortable driving and in the passenger seat. One downside is that there isn’t enough room to comfortably sit next to the car seat, so realistically, the second row can accommodate two car seats or two passengers comfortably. That said, I love how comfortable and spacious the car feels for what we need. It drives smoothly, has been very reliable, and I haven’t had any issues in three years of ownership. My only other complaint is the gas mileage—it averages around 24 MPG.

Love the Highlander but hate the 3rd row back seat seatbelts. It makes it hard for my 5 year old to buckle because the buckles are so deep in the seats. They also don’t have rear anchors. Overall it’s been a great car. For 3 young kids I don’t suggest this car

We bought our Highlander Hybrid Platinum when we were expecting our first baby. 6 months in it has honestly been the perfect size for us. We keep the third row folded down almost all the time, which gives us a huge trunk for the giant baby stroller and all the other gear that somehow comes with one tiny person. The second-row captain’s chairs are also perfect—one side has the large car seat, while the other is still comfortable for a passenger or a breastfeeding mom on the go. The hybrid gets fantastic gas mileage and drives incredibly smoothly. We also really love the Platinum upgrades, especially the heated and cooled seats, upgraded sound system, and panoramic camera. The camera in particular makes such a difference when parking a larger vehicle. It feels big and roomy when we need the space, but it’s still easy to drive around the city and, importantly, fits in our small garage. It has been such a great family car for this stage of life, and we’re really happy we chose it.

This mid size SUV has been the perfect “2 kid” vehicle. Plenty of trunk space with third row folded down. Some things it’s lacking: cup holders, the radio interface is pretty basic, and tight with more than 5 people riding. Overall it’s been very reliable, easy to drive, minimal maintenance, nice looking and gets the job done!

I am a mom of 2 toddler boys who recently purchased a used Highlander. We are extremely happy with the reliability and longevity of the car. It fits our family of 4 well. As we continue to grow our family, we anticipate the Highlander will make a great car for many more years. We have run into a few downsides: limited car seat placement in the 3rd row, limited trunk space when 3rd row is up, and our older model’s tech is a bit of date with no car play. Despite all this, it’s been a great fit for our family

We bought this car before kids in anticipation of kids. We tow a trailer so it is great for that. It does not fit a car seat well in the second row and the 3rd row is your trunk. It is nice to have the option of some leg room in the 3rd row because the second row slides. We've had a lot of random repairs - the main being ( and a known issues) is that the rear ac lines broke it's a 5-7000 dollar repair. It rides really nice we can pack a ton of stuff in it as a current family of 3 (4 on the way) but it's reaching it's limits

I have the Evenflo revolve360. If the front seat is all the way back, it is difficult to rotate the car seat. But for an average height person, there is plenty of room. With the second row seat all the way back, the third row is essentially not accessible for someone to sit. I love the gas mileage and without the third row up there is a ton of trunk space.

I LOVE this car - but it’s not ideal if you need the third row. This car works great for our family - plenty of room for everything we need and still fits in my garage. The only downside is the third row has barely enough leg room to accommodate kids and is basically non existent for adults. Can allow you to stuff people in for a short drive in a pinch but that’s about it. But that’s really my only complaint - otherwise I love it!!

This car is my daily driver for my two kids and me. My husband occasionally drives it or rides in the front passenger seat. For just hauling my 2 kids, it’s great. I have one in a booster and the other in a 5 point harness. But if I have to put even a booster in the 3rd, it is impossible to buckle. I can have very short kids who don’t need a booster in the 3rd row, but it’s honestly not really comfortable for passengers, even non-booster kids. They struggle to get into the 3rd row because of the limited space to get into the back. Additionally it has built in cup holders in the middle between the captains chairs and the arm rests get in the way so it’s very difficult for anyone to squeeze by. On top of all that, the trunk is very small. So I have a nearly not useable 3rd row and a trunk barely big enough to hold my groceries without them falling out when I open it. The front passenger seat is a little tight for my husband (6’1”) when my son is in the seat behind him but it isn’t terrible Performance and reliability wise, it’s fine, I’ve taken it on a lot of road trips and taken it on a lot of unpaved roads (like the rutted roads of the Redwood Forrest) and it has done well. That, I about to need to replace the struts. In general, this car has been good for our family, I just wish that it was better at hauling more than 4 people, I essentially have a 4 MAYBE 5 passenger car when it’s advertised as one that should be able to care at least 6 (but there are 7 seats). Even if you can carry 5 or 6 people they can hardly get in or out.

I absolutely love my Highlander! We have captains chairs which I personally think are perfect for our two car seats. One con is that the third row is definitely tight. You cannot truly have three adults sitting back there comfortably. We rarely use the third row so when the row is down, the trunk space is incredible! Overall I highly recommend depending on how much you would need that third row.

This car works for a family of 4. We could easily store the double stroller in the back and 2 car seats and then the extras... groceries, go bag, etc. Once we hit a 3rd kid, this car felt tight. Still do-able but we ran into space issues.

I have 2 kids (9 & 12) so carseats have never been a factor for me in this car. I love the captain chairs for these ages. The 3rd row is fine for transporting kids during carpools, etc but I would not want to use it regularly. I LOVE the hybrid model- I average 37 mpg. I do not like driving large cars, so for our family of 4 it's a great fit. As my kids grow I would look into the Grand Highlander (hybrid for life!).

Overall, good tech. Room second row with captains chairs. Easy access to the the third row although tight. Car drives smoothly, that being said, the steering feels very loose. I prefer a tighter turning radius and less sensitive feel.

The Highlander is a great daily driver for a family of 4. I got this cat before becoming a mom and it has done grate to accommodate the expansion of our family. We have the captain's chairs in the second row and at first I regretted not getting the bench, but now I'm glad for that decision. It has given plenty of room for rear facing and forward facing car seats without cutting into the driver and passenger space and I have the world's bulkiest car seats. As others have noted, the third row is not optional for passengers and it's difficult to access. I've dedicated the third row to our large dog and he gets in from the back hatch as that's easier. I keep the smaller 3rd row seat folded down for dog access and to give a little more storage space for bulk grocery items. The technology is good but nothing to right home about. I have to use a cord to attach my phone for music and navigation which can be annoying. Calls and texts work via Bluetooth. I've had this vehicle for 5 years and it's been extremely reliable and I feel confident transporting my family in it.

I love my car. It was tight in the 2nd row with both kids in car seats but now I just have one in a booster and it’s much better. I love driving the car and it fits both me 5ft and my husband 6’2 comfortably for driving. Trunk space is great but we rarely have the 3rd row up. We fit the dog kennel and all our bags comfortably in the back.

I have owned this car for 5 years and I have enjoyed it for the most part. It was performed well and has towed our trailer on long road trips and over steep mountain passes without issue. The cup holders are tiny and I had to buy an after market cup holder to hold my smaller owalla water bottle. I have been able to install several different car seats from the uppa baby mesa, graco 4 ever convertible seat, the evenflow revolve, and now a graco booster without issue. The third row is rarely used but is VERY tight for my sister to try to sis back there when she visits. She either has to crawl through the back or I have to remove a car seat from one of the captains chairs. We had one major issue with the car when the transmission went out before we even hit 20,000 miles. Toyota covered it under the powertrain warranty but it took them several weeks to get the parts to fix it. It also happened while I was on a road trip (9 hours away) and had to drive the rental all the way back to pick up my car when it was fixed. It was very inconvenient. Otherwise, I really have enjoyed my Highlander.

I love how this car looks. It is beautiful in the exterior. The front row is roomy and I like how easy it is to use the screen. I don’t like that there is not much storage space. The second row gets cramped easily if you have a tall person in the front row and a taller person in the second row. My husband is 5’9 and my daughter is just 5’4, but both have very long legs and they both get cramped in all the rows. The third row may as well not be used at all. There is no room back there at all. My daughter that is 4’9, short legs, can barely fit back there. The trunk is a pretty good size, even better with third row down. I don’t like how there is not more height adjustments for the roof door, I am short and if it’s perfect for me, it’s too short for my husband. I have hauled a ton of stuff in this car though with all the seats folded down, which I love that they all fold flat. It does take it a second to go after you push on the gas and the brakes are not the best. The headlights are amazing though! I never have to use my bright lights. I have never had any mechanical trouble with it whatsoever. It is a very good reliable car that is easy to use and everything functions well. I just wish there was more room in the second and third rows. Overall, I love my car and love driving it. The drive is very smooth and it whips around good.

The Toyota Highlander is great overall. With bucket seats, it’s very narrow in between to get to the back row. Limited leg room in 3rd row. Can fit a small travel stroller in trunk when back row is upright. Don’t love the air vents and how they face opposite direction when infant is rear facing in bucket seat. I wish the technology was upgraded in 2018 model to allow for the newer baby monitor gear to connect to the screen in the front. Drives well overall.

This is my mom’s car (my kids grandma) and I love this car! We have captains chairs which makes car seats easy, until the third kid came along. The third row is not ideal for realistic use or car seats. I really wish Toyota would do better. The lack of latches/tethers in the third row is also frustrating. Otherwise it is a great car and very reliable, would definitely recommend just based on kid/car seats needs. AWD does great in snow and bad weather. Love the panoramic roof. I have also used this to tow with ease.

Truly a great car! I would still have this car if I didn’t have 3 kids. I had the captains chairs which were great for 2 kids and pre-kid life. They are so comfortable for adults and for big kids. They make car seats easy. The third row is too small and tight to realistically use a convertible car seats and none of my kiddos are in boosters yet. The third row also lacks car seat compatibility. If I had a bench in the 2nd row I would probably keep it until kid #4. With the third row down there is a ton of useful trunk space. The tech is good, but not great. My car did not have car play and the gps that comes with the vehicle is only okay. I did much better with a phone mount. The car is beautiful and the perfect suv. I loved the panorama sun roof. It was very reliable, awd made it good in the snow and other weather. Drives really well.

We have the 3 row bench, 8-seater. However, with 2 kids in front-facing car seats, we’re realistically only able to use 4 seats. No car seat tilt is such a bummer for not being able to access the third row. The good things about the car are: great gas mileage, spacious trunk with third row down, and feels very safe!
