2023 Volvo XC90

Features We Love
  • Integrated Built-In Booster: One of the smartest features in the segment. Perfect for booster-age kids or grandparents’ duty — convenient, safe, and eliminates the need for an extra seat.
  • Three-Across Friendly Second Row: Three independently sliding seats (not a 60/40 split), two sets of lower anchors, and three tether anchors make this a strong candidate for multiple car seats.
  • Impressive Trunk Space for a Midsize SUV: With the third row up, it fits a double stroller — which is not something every midsize (or even some full-size SUVs) can do.
Car Mom Review

The Exterior

Exterior: Sleek, Elevated, and Unmistakably Volvo

Volvo has perfected understated luxury.

The front grille is smaller but beautifully chromed, giving it a clean, high-end look without trying too hard. The 21-inch two-toned wheels elevate the side profile, and the signature vertical LED taillights still make this one of the most recognizable SUVs on the road.

It’s elegant. It’s refined. It doesn’t scream for attention — but it absolutely turns heads.

Plug-In Hybrid: The Best of Both Worlds

Here’s where things get interesting.

This XC90 gives you about 35 miles of all-electric range. That may not sound huge — but the average driver travels under 30 miles per day. That means many families could realistically use this as an EV for daily commuting.

You have three main drive modes:

  • Hybrid (default) – Gas engine + electric motor working together efficiently
  • Pure – Prioritizes electric driving (perfect for school drop-off or errands)
  • Power – Emphasizes performance

Because the battery isn’t massive, you can plug this into a standard 110V home outlet. A full charge takes roughly 10–25 hours depending on setup — no fancy charging system required.

For families wanting to “dip their toe” into electric driving without fully committing to EV life, this is a really approachable option.

First Row

Highlights include:

  • Wool-blend seat upholstery (stunning… but not the most kid-proof)
  • Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system
  • Heads-up display
  • Fully digital gauge cluster with seatbelt occupancy map
  • Crystal-style shifter

One of my favorite tech features? The seatbelt map. You can visually see who is buckled and who isn’t. For booster-aged kids, that’s a game changer.

Tech Notes

Volvo was the first manufacturer to fully integrate Google built-in. That means:

  • Google Maps
  • Google Assistant
  • Google Play Store
  • Google Podcasts

All native to the system.

It also includes Apple CarPlay.

My only tech complaint? The screen feels slightly small for how much functionality it holds, and I wish there were more physical climate controls. Even switching hybrid drive modes requires digging through the infotainment system — not ideal when you want something quick and simple.

Storage: A Little Light

Let’s be honest: storage up front is limited.

  • Two usable cupholders
  • Very small center console
  • Modest door storage

For a midsize SUV, it leans toward the smaller side of the category. If you’re coming from something like a Traverse or Pilot, you will notice the difference.

Second Row

The XC90 is available as a 6- or 7-passenger configuration, but if you’re serious about car seats — get the bench.

The second row has:

  • Lower anchors in both outboard seats
  • Three top tether anchors
  • Three completely independent sliding seats (not a 60/40 split)

That independent sliding design makes three-across installs much easier.

Built-In Booster = Genius

The integrated booster seat is one of my favorite features in any vehicle — especially this one.

For grandparents, carpools, or families transitioning out of harnessed seats, this built-in option is convenient, safe, and incredibly versatile.

Why more manufacturers don’t offer this is beyond me.

Third Row

Third Row: Occasional Use Territory

Let’s be clear: this is an excellent five-passenger vehicle with an occasional third row.

The third row:

  • No lower anchors
  • No tether anchors (in the 7-passenger version)
  • Side vents
  • Cup holders
  • No charging ports

It’s actually more comfortable than expected for adults, with decent legroom — but it’s not a primary car seat zone.

Access also isn’t ideal if you have second-row car seats installed.

No items found.

Trunk

Trunk Space: Impressive for Its Size

Here’s where Volvo surprises people.

With the third row up, the XC90 fit a Zoe double stroller. That’s impressive — especially for a midsize SUV.

With the third row down, cargo space is generous and completely flat.

One small frustration: there’s no pull tab to raise the third row back up. You physically have to reach in and lift it. It takes seconds, yes — but when you’re juggling groceries and toddlers, those seconds matter.

Volvo, if you’re listening: give us the tab.

Safety

The 2023 Volvo XC90 continues Volvo's long-standing reputation for prioritizing safety. It has earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick+, the highest award, and also received a 5-Star overall rating from NHTSA. It has strong crash protection and crash avoidance performance. The XC90 also stands out by offering seat belt pretensioners in every seating position--a rarity and an important safety feature. Pretensioners remove slack from the seat belt in the nanoseconds before a crash, dramatically reducing injury in frontal and near-frontal collisions. This feature has been standard in front seats for nearly two decades, but not in most back seats. While this doesn’t affect children in harnessed car seats, it does affect other passengers. I applaud Volvo's dedication to safety by adding these in every seating position!

Other standard safety features include:

  • Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) with crash avoidance, or severity reduction, for vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and even animals
  • Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with steering assist
  • Lane Keeping Aid and Oncoming Lane Mitigation
  • Run-Off Road Mitigation
  • Cross Traffic Alert with Auto Brake

Car Seat Setup

Built-In Booster: A Standout Feature

One of the most unique (and genuinely useful) features of the XC90 is the optional built-in booster seat in the second-row center position.

The seat folds up and out to create a safe, integrated booster that’s incredibly convenient for everyday use. I highly recommend this option for families—it makes three-across and adjacent installations much easier, and it improves buckle access since kids don’t have to reach around bulky booster armrests.

LATCH & Third-Row Considerations

Lower anchors are only available in the second-row outboard seats, with no lower anchors in the third row.

The third row itself sits slightly higher, which can make it less comfortable for larger passengers or kids in certain boosters. If you’re using the third row for a child, opt for a low-profile booster to avoid sacrificing headroom.

Head Restraints & Car Seat Compatibility

All head restraints in the XC90 are forward-angled and non-removable.

This isn’t an issue for rear-facing seats, but it can create challenges for forward-facing car seats and boosters. That said, several seats tend to work well with this setup:

  • Convertible & All-in-One Seats: Nuna Rava, Nuna Exec, Clek Foonf, Clek Fllo, Graco SlimFit3 LX
  • Boosters: Peg Perego Viaggio Flex 120, Nuna Aace, Evenflo GoTime

Most of these—especially the Clek and Graco options—also work well for three-across setups in this vehicle.

Accessing the Third Row

If you need third-row access with a car seat installed in the second-row center, you’ll need an extremely narrow seat.

The Clek and Graco models mentioned above are strong options, along with the Nuna Exec. And of course, the built-in booster is ideal here since it eliminates bulk altogether.

Space & Fit Notes

Both the second and third rows have some limitations when it comes to space:

  • Bulky car seats don’t fit well in either row
  • Most rear-facing seats will not work in the third row
  • For taller passengers, look for more compact options like the Nuna Rava, Nuna Exec, or Graco Extend2Fit 3-in-1

Rotating car seats tend to be bulkier, but a few more compact options—like the Cybex Callisto G 360 and Britax Galaxy—can work for some families in both rear- and forward-facing modes.

This car is beautiful inside and out but it was not a great fit for my growing family. The back seat air ventilation wasn’t great either for my children in their car seats, especially my child that’s still rear facing. I think this car would work for a family with older children that don’t require ample car seat space.

I’ve had this car 5 years and still love it so much. It’s fit my 2 kids through various carseat stages and now I’m loving the built in booster when we have booster-size friends riding with us. Have had very few issues over the 5 years and I feel very safe driving it which is my #1 priority in a car.

Our whole family loves our car! Pros: safety, gas mileage, overall look, comfort, quiet Scandinavian luxury, fun to drive with over 400hp, built in booster seat. Cons: expensive maintenance, no wireless Apple carplay, nonremovable head rests limit the forward facing car seat options, tight squeeze for taller drivers when rear facing car seats are installed, no ceiling vents.

The exterior is gorgeous. I was expecting a bigger wow factor inside but is sort of disappointing. I felt i would be compromising a-lot of functionality for gorgeous good looks. Would consider again in the future is budget allows but for the price I could not give up on some interior functionality for my daily use.

I love my car. I have captain chairs and each grandson sets in a booster. I don’t haul strollers anymore. The truck is small but I can get my Costco or grocery bags in without a problem. I wish the captain chairs had arm rest. I don’t think the back seats are as comfortable as they could be. I think adding arm rest would resolve this. The vents in the back are on the sides. A refacing baby however would need the car cooled before hand because of this. The second row needs better cup holders. The third row has great cup holders. It also could use more USB ports for second and third rows. I had a Lexus RX 350 prior to this car and I drove it for 14 1/2 years. Hoping to get that out of this one. I have had no major issues with the car. I have put new tires on and just once a year oil changes. It’s comfortable. I drive a lot of high miles to see grandsons and I do love it.

LOVE this car!! As a mom of 2, it fits my family perfectly. The third row allows for the occasional extra kid(s), but would not recommend if you rely on the third row. I have the PHEV, and can do much of my day-to-day driving on battery. I went from filling up once a week (VW Atlas) to once every 3-4 weeks! I love how zippy the car is, especially when driving on electric. I also love the wood grain in the interior- it’s an understated beauty. Perhaps my favorite thing about the car is the safety. I feel so comfortable and safe in this car, and I plan for my now 12-year-old to learn to drive using this car.

Very pleasant family car. Nice, restrained design inside and out, and it feels like a quality vehicle: everything is sturdy, feels luxurious, and materials are nice. The car feels well thought out. It drives well, especially as a plug-in hybrid: it’s properly fast in hybrid mode, and tooling around town in electric mode is great: I often end up not filling up for weeks on end! Besides all the good parts, there is some disappointment: while the trunk is huge (especially with the third row up), the passenger space doesn’t feel that generous and while car seats fit reasonably well, you probably wouldn’t want to stick a convertible rear facing seat behind a tall driver, which is a little disappointing. It certainly has more room than a Volvo XC60, but not dramatically so—if you don’t need the luggage space of the larger car, you don’t really need to upgrade to fit a car seat if you only have one or two kids.

Absolutely fabulous car for two children. It doesn’t get much better! However, once you have 3, it gets a little tricky. Three car seats across seems to be your only option with limited third row access and no tethers in the third row. But WOW is it a great car otherwise! Now that we have 3 and are considering four, we definitely need to trade up for a minivan or full size SUV.

It’s the safest car on the road and yet still looks amazing! Comfortable for road trips with entire family, dog included. The drive is smooth and the car doesn’t feel too big for daily use with 2 kids.

I absolutely love my Volvo XC90! The drive is smooth and comfortable, and the size is perfect for our family with two older kids—plenty of room without feeling oversized. I especially love the built-in third-row bench, which makes it so easy to accommodate the kids and their friends. My biggest downside is the technology: we’ve had issues where all of the volume/sound stops working and the system has to be reset, and Apple CarPlay only works when it’s plugged in with a cord. Other than that I love it!

While I love driving the XC90 and it is very comfortable, it is very tight for a family of 5. It is challenging for my 6 year old to climb in the backseat and our large dog doesn't fit in the car with us. The trunk space is extremely limited (can't do a Costco run with the kids in the car!). And my biggest complaint is that the climate control buttons are on the touch screen and some are buried in multiple layers of menus, which is very difficult (unsafe??) to access while driving. The user interface is a pain in the butt which is odd given how the interior and features of the car are more premium. I think this would be a great car for a 2 kid family if there were physical buttons and the user interface improved!

I love my Volvo! As a family of 3, it truly is a great car for us. I love the zippy drive and the comfortable seats are top notch. We sometimes wish it was slightly larger when we are on a road trip, but we make it work. We feel so safe and have really loved this car so far!

I love my Volvo xc90. It is a very stylish car that has had a lot of functionality for a family of 5. I have a bench seat and have 3 Graco slim fit lx. I have them 3 across in the bench seat. I also had a Nuna pipa lite on the passenger outboard seat side when my youngest was an infant. It worked well for our family. I will say, as my kids have gotten older I’ve had more issues with them needing space from each other. They’re definitely able to touch each other. The back trunk area has all the space we need for road trips. I keep a single travel stroller and a double travel stroller back there at all times and still have room for my Costco hauls. Overall, in love with this car. I will say I am pregnant with my 4th and we had to also buy a Honda Odyssey because the Volvo was not going to work for 4. Access to the 3rd row with 3 across in the bench is impossible. Also no tethers in the 3rd row so don’t count on putting any forward facing back there. I did put my Nuna Pipa rear facing back there once but it was not ideal. Regarding technology, it’s a 10/10. I absolutely love the 360 degree camera and in 2023, our model comes equipped with Google. We are able to use Spotify and Google Maps without using our phones. A big luxury! Does not have wireless Apple CarPlay. You must use the cord. Overall, a fantastic family car that pairs function with beauty.

I didn’t listen when Kelly said to never buy the first year of a new model and I majorly regret it. The 2025.5 XC90 is a great car, but the technology has had major issues since I brought it home. Despite multiple software updates, it is still very glitchy and I’m considering the 2026, which is said to be a lot better. Another major callout is that it is not very tall driver/passenger friendly. I am 5’9” and my husband is 6’3.” We are not able to put a rear facing car seat behind the driver (we have the Doona but I think any would be tight). We love the car but really should have given Volvo the chance to work all the kinks out. It is the perfect car for forward facing car seats. It is easy to park and drives like a 2-row SUV.

Love all the features of my XC90 Ultra: heads up display, auto hold, heated & cooled seats (at the same time), cozy seats and lots of safety features! I commute 35 minutes daily with my kids; the kids are comfortable and I feel safe driving with them on the rural highways of MO.

This is a good car that felt safe and was very stylish and comfortable. The starter did fail after 3 years and it was a pain to find a mechanic to fix it. The Volvo dealer was very unhelpful and we had to go to a third party to repair it.

I love the drive of the xc90. The exterior looks great and the driver experience is lovely. It’s been reliable for the 5+ years I’ve owned it and has only had a few minor quirks. The size is on the smaller size for a midsize suv. Pros: drive, seat comfort, consistency, 2nd row flexibility. Cons: air suspension makes some people carsick, cup holders suck, CarPlay is glitchy, third row is tiny and uncomfortable.

I love the xc90! I actually have the 2025.5 which is the updated grill and updated infotainment. I love that I don’t feel like I’m driving a huge car which is nice for the amount of city driving I do. I wish there was more tech on the dash/a way to set safety preferences (I had that on my previous q5) but other than that I’m happy with it. I’ve easily fit 6 people (including teenagers/adults) in it without an issue.

The visibility, safety, and sophisticated style make this car a complete winner for me and my family. Google functionality makes everything handsfree with apple car play also as an option. Second Row: The bench with built in booster is so convenient and seamless, additional side air vents hit my children's face perfectly. Third Row: My husband is 6'4" and can fit in the third row - will he feel a bit crammed yes - but he did just fine during our family vacation we took with my parents and needed to ride in the back from time to time. Does require premium gas, but gets very good gas mileage. And I typically drive side roads vs highway for work.

Test drove this car... and this was HIGH up on my list! I wanted to love it. I wish I loved it. Unfortunately this car felt super tight inside... the 3rd row was suffocating and even the front seats felt small. I only have 2 kids and was interested in a bench to use with the 3rd row down but ultimately landed on a VW Atlas.

I have two children in rear facing car seats and this car works well to transport our family of four, but it's tough to add any additional passengers. The third row is tight, so we almost never use it. The middle seat between the car seats is comfortable for a smaller adult (or the built in booster is great for transporting older kids), but it's hard to get to because of the two rear facing seats. Overall, I love this car for us and it drives like a dream. The trunk has great space with the third row down. We've traveled multiple times with our small dog and had plenty of room.

I love that this car is so safe! It’s also sleek, they don’t change it up too often and the technology is just right for me! I don’t need an iPad in my car and I have all the creature comforts. Would be nice if there were some additional cup holders, the ones in the middle of the second row are very small and don’t fit many cups. I love this car!

I loved our volvo xc90 performance wise. We had 1 rear facing car seat (the Doona) & my husband (who is 6 foot) could not extend his seat all the way back to be comfortable. It seems very tight on the inside. The tech in the 2021 was fine, just the display was very outdated to me. I did love the built in booster seat.

I got this car not knowing if I wanted 2 or 3 kids, but knowing I am not a full size suv mom. I looooove love love this car. Even with three car seats in the middle row. I like that it’s super easy for me to reach the backseat and help my 5 year old from the drivers seat. I almost always have the third row down, so I use it largely as a 5 seater with a big trunk and it works so well for me. My trunk organizer, any stroller, and my groceries for the week all fit in it. My only complaints I give when I tell people I love my car is 1- car seats are hard because the head rests are fixed and angled. So know that before you buy and 2- the Apple car play goes through phases where it gets sassy and won’t consistently connect. But that’s only happened twice in the four years I’ve had it! I have never had to take this car to the shop for anything outside of routine maintenance or accident repair. When it’s time to get another car (hopefully not for while bc this one is paid off) I’ll be back at Volvo to see the newest xc90 for sure!

I love this car! The exterior is very sleek and has the classic Volvo, quiet luxury feel. The drive is very smooth and, and I love the fuel efficiency of the plug-in hybrid (recharge). The interior is very comfortable for the driver and passenger. The middle row is a little tight with three kids but definitely manageable. With the third row down the trunk space is excellent. I will say the third row is a bit difficult to get to when boosters and car seats are installed, so we only use it in a pinch. I do love the convenience of the included booster in the middle seat/ middle row!

The 2024 Volvo XC90 was a wonderful family SUV. It offered plenty of space for our daughter and her car seat without making the front passenger feel cramped. The interior felt comfortable, quiet, and luxurious, and the ride was smooth and refined. It was also easy to drive despite its size, with excellent safety features that made me feel secure when traveling with my family. Overall, it was a comfortable, upscale, and practical vehicle that worked extremely well for us.

Do I love our XC90, unfortunately no. More like a lust at first sight that I wished I would have ghosted after the third date. The exterior and interior are beautifully designed. It drives like a dream. The only complaint (and it’s a big one) I have about this vehicle is the infotainment system. Volvo is technology driven. The computer inside my car has more updates than my Apple IPhone. And every time there’s an update, you bet there’s going to be bugs that will have to be fixed with the next update. What are these bugs you say? Here are just a few…(and just to clarify, these problems aren’t permanent but the amount of money paid for this vehicle, I don’t think any consumer seeking quiet luxury would think this is ok.) -Are the lights going to turn on after you shut the car or approach the car? Nope, pitch black inside and outside the car. Doesn’t sound that bad until you work late and it’s so dark you can’t find your purse in the front seat. -Most current bug, the sound stops working. No radio, no blinker noise, no alerts, nothing. -Put the car in reverse, and sometimes the cameras don’t work. -My favorite- when the screen just goes black and it’s 105 outside. This means you have to restart the computer while driving. Your AC is built into the screen so the air shuts off while the computer restarts. Insert red sweating emoji here. Honorable mention for the sensitive exterior sensors. It makes using the Pilot Assist worth it if you are able to relinquish control and allow the vehicle to essentially drive itself. I can see why you will never get into an accident in this car though. Due to the sensitivity of the sensors, I can’t back up my average sloped driveway without the car slamming on the brakes so hard it feels like you’ve hit something or in my case smack my face directly onto the steering wheel. I’ve adjusted the sensitivity, only to find out I have to do it every time I start it.

As a mom of one, this car checks all the boxes for me. We have the 2026 hybrid, and most days I don’t use any gas at all. I’m currently averaging about 250 miles per gallon, which is consistent with the average I achieved over the two years I owned my 2024 model. We rarely use the third row, but the built-in booster seat is perfect for our 7-year-old. Two adults can comfortably sit beside her, and everyone still has plenty of room. I also love having the 3rd row down for my Costco hauls.

As a mom of 1 living in an urban area, I absolutely loved the Volvo XC40. Extremely comfortable ride, reliable, amazing technology (the 360 cam is my absolute favorite feature), top of the line safety features, feels extremely luxurious without the heafty price tag of other luxury cars in the same size, and really great trunk space for only having 1 kid. Now that I have become a mom of 3 (just delivered twins), we are in the market for moving from the small size SUV to midsize SUV (since we still live in an urban area moving up to full size just doesn’t make sense for now for parking reasons/ease of getting around day to day). Unfortunately, I cannot imagine getting around day to day comfortably with 3 rear facing car seats & the trunk feels like it will now be much too small.

We love this vehicle. We have two rear facing Graco Slimfit3 LX car seats in the second row. My husband is 6’2” and he has just enough room. In a pinch, we can fit in the second row between both car seats (bench seat). All this to say, this vehicle isn’t extremely spacious but feels “just right” for us. Volvo’s impressive safety ratings and beautiful exterior design are what drew us to the vehicle and we have been very happy with it! Some cons: no wireless car play, takes premium gas, no tether anchors in third row (as far as I know) since we have the bench seat.

Love this car for my family of four. I have the recharge model and mostly drive locally on the battery charge, longer trips on gas. Despite some minor complaints, like the tech interface and center console design, I love driving it, packing it, and would absolutely buy again. Minor maintenance issues have been handled quickly at the dealership and covered under warranty.

Great car for 2 kids. RF seats can be tight but we are not tall people. Might not choose this if we had more kids. Love this car, knowing we have a bigger car to use for trips, etc. It drives like a tank and feels super safe. Tech can be glitchy sometimes.
