2023 Rivian R1S
added to My List

Features We Love
  • Impressive Cargo Space: Even with the third row in use, the cargo area is large enough to fit a full-size Mockingbird stroller. The split tailgate also helps keep groceries and gear from sliding out when you open the trunk.
  • Premium, Adventure-Ready Interior: The cabin feels upscale with beautiful wood trim, a panoramic glass roof, premium materials, and comfortable seating, while still being designed for an active family lifestyle.
  • Electric Performance with Real Capability: With up to 350 miles of range and impressive off-road capability, the Rivian R1S combines everyday family practicality with the ability to confidently tackle road trips and outdoor adventures.
Car Mom Review

The Exterior

A Unique Look That Stands Out

There's no mistaking the Rivian R1S. Its signature front light bar, boxy shape, and rugged styling make it one of the most recognizable SUVs on the road. While it's considered a midsize SUV, it offers a commanding presence and feels right at home whether you're running errands around town or exploring off the beaten path.

During my time with it, I drove through water crossings, rocky terrain, and steep hills on our family farm, and the R1S handled everything with confidence.

First Row

What It's Like to Drive

The Rivian offers approximately 350 miles of range on a full charge, making it a practical option for many families considering an electric vehicle. Like most EVs, it uses one-pedal driving, where lifting your foot off the accelerator slows the vehicle through regenerative braking.

It takes some adjustment if you're new to electric vehicles, but after a few drives it becomes second nature. That said, I still found myself missing a traditional start/stop button. The vehicle automatically turns on and off based on whether you're inside, which wasn't always convenient in certain situations.

A Beautiful Interior With One Big Drawback

The interior is where Rivian really shines. The wood trim, panoramic glass roof, suede headliner, and premium materials create a cabin that feels both luxurious and adventure-ready.

The biggest downside is the lack of physical controls. Nearly every function—including adjusting the air vents—is controlled through the touchscreen. While the system is visually impressive and easy to learn overall, I found the climate controls unnecessarily complicated for everyday use.

Storage throughout the front cabin is decent, though a few cubbies could be larger for family essentials.

‍

Second Row

How Family-Friendly Is It?

This is where the Rivian impressed me the most.

I successfully installed three car seats across the second row using a combination that included a slim car seat. While not every three-across setup will work, families willing to choose the right car seats should have good success.

The second row offers:

  • Lower anchors on both outboard seats
  • Tether anchors for every second-row seating position
  • Easy access to USB-C charging ports
  • Flat floor space that's great for bags and kids' feet

‍

Third Row

The third row is also more usable than I expected. While legroom isn't generous for adults, the seats themselves are deep enough to make car seat installation much easier than many competitors. That's a huge advantage for larger families who regularly use all three rows.

Trunk

Cargo Space That Works for Real Life

With all three rows in use, I was still able to fit my Mockingbird stroller in the cargo area, which is always one of my biggest family tests.

I also loved the split tailgate design, which helps keep groceries, sports gear, or loose items from falling out when you open the trunk.

One frustration, however, is raising the third-row seats. Since they aren't power-operated, you have to physically climb into the cargo area to lift them into place. A simple pull strap would have made this process much easier.

Our R1S is seriously the best car I have owned. Our girls easily get in and out into boosters (2) and my oldest to the 3rd row on their own. Climate controls (voice!) are so much better than a lot of critics make them out to be. The room for storage is so great with the flexibility of the frunk - way better use of space than my Traverse had. Those were the main points of hesitation we had going into buying it and we were blown away by how wrong the reviewers were. It's the very best!

I have driven /owned over 20 vehicles and this is BY FAR the best one and I am certain I will never own a gas car again. Rivian is a match of rugged and luxury. I would describe this as driving a computer (in a great way) the way it was designed, versus a Ford EV that feels like they just tried to retrofit a gas truck into an EV - trust me it's a completely different experience. Amazing range, comfort and the kids LOVE it! So much space and the front trunk is a lifesaver. I am a 'no extra things in the cab' mom for safety reasons and that enclosed trunk is such a win. 10/10 would recommend!

We love our Rivian! Such a spacious car that is fun to drive. I love the light interior and find it very easy to keep clean, even in our wet PNW climate. When my lease is over we are looking to get another one because we love it so much. The third row isn’t huge, but fine for smaller kids

Great car. So fun to drive. Handles well and so much power. Good tech. Only negative for me is second row. I wish they had made the bench a little wider. The middle seat is snug. Also, more cup holders please Rivian!

We have absolutely loved our Rivian R1S! The performance is incredible, and the air suspension makes it such a smooth, comfortable ride. We switched from a Lincoln Navigator, and because our children travel frequently for physical therapy, swimming, school, and other appointments, my wife was spending more than $200 a week on gas. With the R1S, we’re saving close to $1,000 a month in fuel costs, and charging it at home costs next to nothing. It’s spacious, comfortable, easy to travel in, and truly a great family vehicle. We also own a Cybertruck, and in our experience, both Tesla and Rivian are top-notch. If you’re considering an R1S, I honestly believe you’ll love it!

I can't honestly think of one thing I don't like about my R1S. The constant technology updates are an unexpected amazing touch (think of this as if your iPhone just automatically gets all the good updates of the newer versions without needing to buy the new one - it's like a glitch to always have a new car!). The access to the back seat is fabulous. Ventilation is great. The frunk IS AMAZING. We have way more storage than in our Tahoe thanks to this deep storage (and I like that the items are not loose projectiles in the back area).

I have LOVED my Rivian R1S! We are actually now a dual Rivian family with my husband driving the R1T. Overall, we have been very happy with the performance and reliability of the Rivian. There are over the air updates to the software that they push through every few months, which feels like you are getting a new car sometimes. The Phone as a Key feature is amazing, especially since we both have Rivians, we can just have our phones with us and always have both sets of keys regardless of who drove where. And when we get in the car, it knows whose phone unlocked the car and adjusts the driver seat preferences, etc. Tons of storage with the "frunk" and even has a "kneel" feature when you park that lowers the car for ease of getting in and out! Our only downside is that we live in a city that does not have a Rivian Service Center. The closest one is about 1.5hrs away. For the most part, if you have a service issue, you can submit a mobile service request and they will come to you. There have been a handful of times over the last 3+ years that we have had to go to the actual service center for something, but they have taken great care of us when we have had to go and either provided a loaner, etc. I've had very little issues charging or having range anxiety as most of the places I drive to are within 300 miles, so I can get there on a single charge. Probably only charged on the highway 10 times in 3 years. For kids - the car is great! We used to have 2 boosters but are down to only needing 1 booster. The middle seat of the 2nd row folds down easily so kids can climb back to the 3rd row on their own without an adult tilting the whole row back. We are huge Rivian advocates! Highly recommend!

I've had my R1S (Launch Edition) for over 3 years now. I went into buying a brand-new car from a brand-new company expecting there might be some issues, but I've honestly been very lucky. No major problems, and it's only been to the service center once for a recall. As a mom of 3, this car has been amazing for our family. When I first got it, we had 3 kids in full car seats. Now we're down to one high-back booster and one regular booster. I can fit all 3 kids across the second row and keep the third row folded when I want the extra cargo space. I also drive friends home or to practices about 3x a week, so we use the third row ALL the time. The kids can push a button to move the second-row seat and get back there themselves, which is huge. The third row is surprisingly roomy for kids. I wouldn't choose it for adults on a long trip, but for kids and their friends, it's great. The storage is one of my favorite things. In addition to the regular cargo area, the frunk holds all the random mom stuff I want in the car but don't want taking over my trunk, extra clothes, blankets, snacks, medicine, emergency supplies, etc. It all just lives there. I charge at home, so I never have to stop for gas, which with 3 kids is honestly one of those conveniences you don't fully appreciate until you have it. We only charge out of the home on longer trips, and the range has worked really well for our everyday life. It's also incredibly fun to drive, fast, great on hills, 4WD, comfortable, and it doesn't feel like you're driving a huge family SUV. My biggest complaint is probably the infotainment system. It can be annoying, although you do get used to it. After 3+ years, I still absolutely love my R1S. It's one of those rare cars that works incredibly well for 3 kids and all their stuff but is also a car I genuinely love driving. I would absolutely get another one.

This is definitely my "cool mom" car; it looks cool, it's different, and I love that it's an EV. For my driving, which is primarily around town, back and forth to school, shopping, sports, appointments, being able to charge at home overnight and then get up and go and not have to stop at the gas station is a game changer. I wish there were more three row ESUVs. It's a comfortable car; the seats are comfy, even the third row isn't bad for an adult to sit in. I do not love getting to the back seat and wish that it had Captain's Chairs at the time I got it (now the R1S has that as an option). I have two boys who play soccer and hockey, and I have ample room for sports gear. I also have two large dogs, and they can easily fit in the back together, with one definitely fitting in the third row at a time. Tons of space for shopping trips or travel, and the frunk is a large size as well! It's fun to drive, and it's pure power. However, I question the reliability. Rivian has a known issue of the phone key not properly pairing or having a weak signal. Unless you always use your key card to get in the car, you could run the hassle of waiting for the car to "wake" or open up. Several times I have be literally locked out of the car with my phone right there and the car reading it, twice when it was raining at school pickup. Any issues that I've had are promptly dealt with though! Even though there have been some hiccups, Rivian customer service is amazing. They're quick and easy to contact, and very responsive. I'm not sure I'll get another one; the cost is probably the main issue as the R1S has gone up in price, however the captain's seats are appealing. The interior design is... ok. Storage and the console could be better. If you do get one, make sure to know where your nearest service center is, and make note of Rivian fast charging.

Rivian does not accurately calculate mileage range. Seat belts in second row regularly locked when we had our kids in highbacked boosters. It's better now they are in backless boosters.

Bought this after selling our Ford Expedition. It was not on my radar to move to full EV, but I am never looking back! I wanted better gas milage and reliability and boy does Rivan exceed that. It's like driving a truck with a sporty ride. We've owned it for nearly 3 years with zero issues other than rotating tires (and one new set - it's heavy so it does go through winter tires quickly). The kids love it. Boosters fit well and the kids can easily crawl to the third row. Tech is amazing. It doesn't have Apple Car play, which I thought was a downfall, but I love their tech more. I will be coming back to Rivian for a new one (my oldest already called dibs on this one when he can drive!).

We love the cool factor of the Rivian and that it drives like a truck. It’s the smaller of our two cars and perfect for hauling our two kids in car seats and two big dogs. I also like that we can take a grandparent with only minor inconvenience do me crawling into the third row. Although it’s tiny compared to our Yukon xl third row, it’s actually more comfortable if you can slide the second row seats forward a bit because it’s not as bouncy. I love the split tailgate for diaper changing and the 2026 switched to Tesla charging port and seamless payment in the app which makes longer roadtrips a breeze!

I went with the Rivian because my family was making the switch to electric. We love teslas but I wanted more space. The R1S has a ton of room!! It almost feels like you’re driving a truck. It has a gorgeous interior, it literally gets so many looks and comments. I do feel that it has had issues. It is a newer company so it’s somewhat expected. My screen has had to be reset many times. There was a coolant issue that required my car to be in the shop for over a week, they said it’s common when temps get super cold. That happens in Pittsburgh a lot. The air bag sensors have gone off saying to service immediately. My key card (with electric cars your keys are pretty much like a credit card) stopped connecting and had to be reset. Overall, I LOVE the exterior and interior but the reliability isn’t living up to what it should be doing and therefore, I am switching back to a Tesla model y, not only for reliability but that full self drive is just incredible

I will never buy a different brand - Rivian is our favorite! Hands down the best, most reliable, highest quality vehicle I have owned. I would describe it as utility/adventure meets luxe EV. In 3 years, we have not had one single issue and have only needed tire rotations and windshield washer fluid! It's fun to drive, superb technology that makes mom life easier ("Hey Rivian, turn the AC on high and add a coffee stop to my route"). It's got more HP, torque, and towing capacity than our construction trucks (a bit humbling for some macho folks!). We have done cross-country tenting/camping trips with room to spare thanks to the space the front trunk gives. We live in the coldest area of the lower 48 with the least amount of public chargers and have never had an issue with charging (most is done at home - so you always have a 'full tank' to get you over 360 miles of range each morning). My unexpected love is the over the air tech updates every month or two, so you feel like you are getting all the new bells and whistles without buying a new car; these have even increased our efficiency and range. With fuel prices the way they are, we are so thankful to be able to drive 360+ miles for about $10 (our cost of electricity at home). Driving in snow is a breeze thanks to the adjustable height to get through drifts. The heavy weight of the vehicle keeps us steady in high winds. My only wishes were for captains chairs for our growing kids (coming in 2027) and if the 3rd row had a little more squish to the seats - after 5 hours, they feel stiff.

We absolutely love our Rivian R1S. It feels luxurious, thoughtfully designed, and packed with cool modern features that make it genuinely fun to drive or be a passenger in. We have one child in a rear-facing car seat and a dog, and there’s plenty of room for everyone and all our gear. My husband mainly drives it, but it’s our go-to family car for weekends and outings. Our only complaint is that we have to move the front passenger seat farther forward than we’d like to accommodate our rear-facing Graco Extend2Fit car seat. That may be due to the specific seat and its rear-facing setup, rather than the vehicle itself. Overall, the R1S is comfortable, spacious, capable, and a great fit for our family!

I love my Rivian! First of all, it is a very fun car to drive. I drive a lot and LOVE not having to go to a gas station and being able to charge at home. It is perfect for our family with 2 kids to have the option of the 3rd row if we are bringing friends. That said, one of my biggest complaints is adjusting the seats in the 2nd row after accessing the third row. It takes a lot of manual adjustments that my 7 year old is not able to do and it would be quite the hassle if using the 3rd row daily.

I love driving the rivian. It’s a fun drive and fits my 4 kids plus their friends well. The second row is a bit hard for their kids to pull forward and car seats in the third row would be hard. With one car seat though it works great and it’s been a great car to have

This is just a cool car. A seriously great mid sized SUV with the optional two seater third row. The tech is so fun, every few week updates makes the car always feel new. I love the look of this car and it once you drive a fast EV like this- you will never go back. This car is silent and packed with >800 horsepower. Great storage with a large frunk and deep compartmented trunk. An upgrade from my previous Volvo XC90 in all ways.

Great car for 3 kids! The middle seat in the middle row flips down for easy access to 3rd row. Come: Middle seat is a bit narrow and doesn’t have car seat tilt. Love the 2 back seats in 3rd row.

We absolutely love our Rivian! Charging at home, storage space with front trunk, top safety ratings, and excellent (and still improving) technology. My kids love that they can watch YouTube while it’s parked 🤪

We love this car, but it’s definitely our secondary car as a new family of three, mostly because we haven’t figured out a car seat configuration that works for our 4 & 2.5 year old plus newborn (suggestions / CarMom help welcome!). The car itself is great, when it works. When we first got it there seemed to still be a lot of tech glitches, requiring a lot of hard and soft resets. Those issues seemed to have largely been resolved by now. We have occasionally had hardware issues, some big and some small (ex: faulty drive train, faulty windshield wiper fluid sensor), but Rivian fixed all the issues for no cost. A great car that is getting more reliable over time and will be more easily useable when we get out of bulky toddler/baby car seat phase.

Love the performance, the comfort features and the space in the car. My only main gripe with it is that there’s just not enough storage (cubbies/cupholders) for a mom. I also find some of the tech distracting while driving (especially the climate control).

Hands down the very best car we have ever owned. Who doesn't like a "tank" costing just 10 dollars to take you over 350 miles? Fits the family extremely well for road trips. We love to camp and can easily pack for a family of 5 tenting thanks to the huge front trunk. We live in the coldest area of the country and do lose about 20-30% on the coldest days ( - 40 degrees in January) but has not impacted us at all on where we go. It is our first EV and we will never go back. The only drawback is that my oldest said the 3rd row seat felt stiff after 10 hours on a cross country road trip this summer.
