2022 Volkswagen Atlas
added to My List

Features We Love
  • Best in Class Carseat Capability: The second row is extremely car seat friendly. There are three sets of lower anchors across the bench and tether anchors on all five rear seats. The car-seat-friendly tilt feature is a game changer because you can access the third row without uninstalling a car seat
  • Comfortable Third Row & Cargo: The third row is surprisingly usable for a midsize SUV. I had actual legroom back there, and it comes with side vents, cup holders, and lighting. Even with the third row up, you still get about 18 cubic feet of cargo space, which is enough to fit a full-size stroller plus a little extra.
  • Big, Spacious SUV in the Mid-Size Class: The Atlas is one of the largest mid-size SUVs on the market, great for families who want more space without jumping to full-size or a minivan.
Car Mom Review

The Exterior

Volkswagen keeps the Atlas simple — and I mean that in the best way.

The front end is bold with a prominent VW badge, subtle chrome accents, and cohesive hood lines that make it look strong without being overdesigned. The 20-inch rims give it a sporty stance, and I love how the beltline follows the curve of the wheel well. Around back, you get wraparound taillights and a clean chrome bar with ATLAS embossed into it.

It’s sleek. It’s athletic. It’s not trying too hard.

The Atlas comes with two engine choices:

  • 4-cylinder
  • 3.6L V6

I’ve driven both, and I personally prefer the V6. It offers stronger performance and better towing capacity, which matters for families hauling boats, trailers, or campers. Yes, it comes with a higher price tag but the added power feels worth it to me

First Row

The Atlas interior has always been one of my favorites for pure functionality.

It doesn’t feel flashy. It doesn’t feel overly intricate. It just works.

What Stands Out:

  • Digital dash (on SE with Tech)
  • Simple, intuitive infotainment system
  • Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
  • Physical climate controls
  • Huge center console
  • Massive door cubbies (40oz water bottle approved)

The screen is smaller than many competitors, but it’s functional. I’d mostly use CarPlay anyway.

I especially appreciate how easy it is to adjust rear climate from the front. If you’re a parent, you know how important that is when a kid starts yelling that they’re hot.

The center console is deep and wide, with additional USB-C ports inside. Volkswagen has fully moved to USB-C, so that’s what you’ll find throughout.

Cup holders? Elite. Volkswagen consistently nails cup holder design.

Second Row

Second Row: Bench or Captain’s Chairs

The Atlas offers both configurations:

  • Bench = 7 passengers
  • Captain’s chairs = 6 passengers

And I will say it loud and clear:
The Atlas bench is amazing.

It’s wide enough for legitimate three-across setups. Even with captain’s chairs, though, the space is impressive.

Car Seat Setup:

  • Lower anchors in outboard seats
  • Tether anchors in all four rear seating positions
  • Built-in sunshades
  • Excellent side cubbies

Only downside, no ceiling vents!!

Third Row Access:

One of my favorite features in the Atlas is the car-seat-friendly tilt.

If your car seat is installed with lower anchors, you can tilt and slide the entire seat forward to access the third row — without uninstalling the seat.

This works great for:

  • Infant seat bases
  • Forward-facing seats with LATCH
  • Boosters with lower anchor connectors

That feature alone makes the Atlas incredibly practical for growing families.

Third Row

Third Row: Shockingly Spacious

Here’s the thing about the Atlas — the third row is actually usable.

At six feet tall, I still have:

  • Solid headroom
  • Good knee clearance
  • Wide seating
  • Pillar-mounted vents
  • Cup holders and cubbies

The third-row ventilation is actually better positioned than the second row vents.

And because it’s only two seats back there, you get actual elbow room.

No items found.

Trunk

With the third row up, you get 20.6 cubic feet of cargo space, which is strong for a midsize seven-passenger SUV.

My UPPAbaby Vista fits back there — and that’s saying something.

There are also:

  • Side storage compartments
  • Illuminated cargo areas
  • Easy fold-flat third row seats

When the third row is down, the trunk becomes impressively spacious.

For reference, only vehicles like the Chevy Traverse and Buick Enclave offer more cargo room in this category.

Safety

The 2022 Atlas received a 5-Star overall safety rating from NHTSA but was not a Top Safety pick from the IIHS.

I want to call out the lack of second and third-row seat belt pre-tensioners. Pretensioners remove slack from the seat belt in the nanoseconds before a crash, dramatically reducing injury in frontal and near-frontal collisions. This feature has been standard in front seats for nearly two decades, but not in the back seats. While this doesn’t affect children in harnessed car seats, it does affect other passengers.

Safety Features:

  • Forward Collision Warning with Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Electronic Stability Control and traction control
  • Lane Keep Assist (available)
  • Adapative Cruise Control (available)

Car Seat Setup

Don't want a full-size SUV, but still need to fit 4–5 kids in car seats? The Atlas is the car that can fit everyone practically and comfortably.

Second Row Options & Car Seat Access

The second row offers either a bench seat or captain’s chairs, and both feature car-seat-friendly tilt. The Atlas bench is arguably the best midsize SUV to accommodate three-across setups.

Every seating position in the second and third rows has:

  • A removable head restraint
  • A top tether anchor

Every second-row seating position also has lower anchors. Lower anchors are notably missing from the third row. While they are not necessary for a safe car seat installation, they are helpful for booster seats. Many boosters offer lower anchor connectors to keep the seat secure when unoccupied. Otherwise, the booster seat should be buckled in with a seat belt to keep it from becoming a projectile in a crash.

Important Second Row Details

The second-row center lower anchors are unfortunately overlapped by the outboard behind-the-driver seat belt. That means if you want to use the center seat’s lower anchors, you cannot use the outboard driver’s seat belt at the same time.

Additionally, the space between the seat belt buckle for the center position and the buckle for the adjacent position is very small. This means most car seats are too wide to install in the middle seat without resting on the belt buckle, which can damage the buckle.

Refer to your owner’s manual for specific guidance, but you can contact VW for a buckle cover if you wish to install a larger car seat in the center position. The buckle cover renders the outboard passenger buckle useless.

Translation:

If you want to install the outboard seat with the seat belt (usually needed for three-across installs), your center car seat must be:

  • Very narrow
  • Installed using the seat belt

Enter the Graco SlimFit3 LX. While some other narrow car seats work here too, nothing is as versatile as this seat.

Best Car Seat Fits in the Second Row

The wide outboard seats can accommodate just about any car seat. There’s also plenty of legroom to fit large seats front-to-back.

If you plan to use both the second and third rows for passengers simultaneously, I recommend using a compact car seat in the second row to preserve third-row legroom.

Examples of compact seats include:

  • Graco Extend2Fit 3 in 1
  • Nuna Rava
  • Britax Poplar

Third Row Space & Access

The third row has two full-size seats and can comfortably fit:

  • Adults
  • Children in boosters
  • Children in car seats

Rear-facing seats fit, but they must be compact.

To access the third row, use the car-seat-tilt feature, which moves the seat up and forward without compromising a car seat installed with LATCH. Of course, this also works with no car seat installed.

A rotating car seat is a great option here so even a rear-facing seat can take advantage of car-seat tilt.

Car seats that rotate and have higher lower anchor weight limits in rear-facing mode include:

  • Evenflo Revolve360 Slim
  • Graco EasyTurn360

These seats are also compatible in a three-across configuration next to a narrow, low-profile, forward-facing car seat in the center, like the Graco SlimFit3 LX.

Car Seats That Are NOT Compatible

Any forward-facing harnessed seat or booster seat that:

  1. Requires a head restraint
  2. Does not permit a gap caused by a head restraint

This is less of a problem in the second row since the head restraints are relatively flush to the seat, particularly in the center position.

However, the third-row head restraints are extremely bulky when not removed for a car or booster seat installation.

Can You Use Lower Anchors & Seat Belt Together?

Another common question is whether the lower anchors and seat belt may be used together if the car seat permits it.

Yes — if the car seat permits using both lower anchors and the seat belt, VW also permits it.

At the time of this writing, the only car seats that permit this are:

  • Nuna Pipa
  • Clek Foonf (forward-facing)
  • babyark
  • Axkid One3

This is my third Volkswagen Atlas, having previously leased a 2021 and a 2024 model, and I continue to love everything about this vehicle. It is spacious, comfortable, and offers a smooth ride. I currently have the SE with Technology trim and really appreciate all of the features it includes. As a mom, I especially value how easily it accommodates my two children and their friends. We are now past the car seat stage, but when my kids were younger, the Atlas comfortably fit two car seats with ease. My only suggestion would be to include a physical button or knob for the climate controls, as the touchscreen can sometimes be difficult to adjust while driving.

Our Atlas has been just what we needed with 3 young kids. It feels roomy and gives us lots of options for car seats. We have had no issues with it. We are due for a new car and are considering another one because it has been so good to us.

I bought this car in 2022 after Kelly the Car moms review. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about it. 3 kids at home during the time and it fit a family of 5 perfect. Love the captains chairs. All the tech. Never owned a brand new car before this one and still have it. 3rd row leg room is the best!

This is my second Atlas! The car is a great size for my family of 4. We have 2 in car seats, my husband is 6’4 and can fit well in the passenger seat with a rear facing child behind him. My previous 2019 Volkswagen was amazing which is why I bought another. I’ve had some tech issues with the 2025, overhead instrument cluster/sunroof issues and then apple car play issues but it is in warranty and have not had an issue getting them fixed. If you can maintain the car regularly it will be a great car for your family!

The trunk space is very limited if the third row is up - that is probably my biggest “con”. As a family of five, if we are traveling and need to take a stroller, we either need to put one side of the third row down (not ideal) or use our car topper. Otherwise - we have not had any issues. To me personally, the front end feels a little large but just takes some getting used to. It has been reliable and safe for us!

Love the Atlas. I’m not sure if it’s my or all 2021s but it does have some quirks. Sensors going off randomly when I’m not close to anything or the screen not turning on. But overall plenty of space for my double stroller and crate for the dogs in the back!

This car has been a workhorse for our family. We put a ton of miles on her with long trips as well as daily driving. Rear floor vents were broken by kids inadvertently stepping on them which was annoying and seems like a bad choice for a car made to haul children. Trunk space we felt like was the best of what we had compared it to at the time: Acadia, Enclave and Explorer. Maintenance from Volkswagen is kind of pricey and tough to find the correct oil if you want to get an oil change outside of the dealership. Great all season car!

We have the bench in the middle row and have been overall very happy with the vehicle. We have the SEL trim, and there are a few things I wish we had (power-folding mirrors and a better backup camera), but those didn't push us to go up a trim level because we wanted FWD, and for 2018, the top trim was only available in AWD. The reviewers at the time did caution about the engine power for the size of the vehicle, and I do agree that it is underpowered.

We have loved the Atlas! This car saw our family through the transition of 2-3 kids and then 3-4 kids, an ultimate car seat machine. I love the drive and the comfort/tech. When our lease was up we did ultimately decide to move into a minivan, but had we owned the Atlas it would have continued to work great for all 6 of us!!

I absolutely loved my car until my lease ended. When my lease ended it was like all the problems started. I had to replace my fuel pump, get a full carbon clean-out. My current gas gauge is failing. I wish she never failed me. I love her so much :(

Great for our needs with two kids, PLENTY of space and storage. Best value for the space and design in my opinion! I got the SE model, and I wish I would’ve gotten the tech model. The tailgate is HEAVY. Other than that, I love it.

The atlas is a fantastic, spacious option for those who are looking for a size upgrade but not wanting to make the jump to a suburban style car. We can fit 3 car seats across easily in the second row and have a huge amount of space in the trunk when needed! Our daily set up is two in the third row and one in the second row and it still feels super spacious even with the car seats spread out. We’ve driven this car up and down the east coast, fully loaded with kids, snacks, and suitcases. It’s the best!

I love everything about my 2024 VW Atlas SEL R-Line....except the lack of physical buttons on the infotainment system, especially for climate control. You get used to it, but it's a micro-annoyance I have. The media/bluetooth/Apple Carplay connection also drives me insane about once a month. I'll have days where it drops connection without notice and won't reconnect until I restart the car completely. I love everthing else about it though - the sporty R-Line exterior, comfy seats (comfier than Audi IMO), simple interior design and amazing cargo space. The sport mode is super fun if your a real "car girl"! The carseat setup has been great for my daughter as she transition to a convertible carseat, booster seat and now backless booster!

Wonderful family car. I love this car and have had no issues since I got it in 2022. I have the captain seats in the second row which works really nicely with my 2 kids, especially with the car seat tilt. 3rd row is roomy for adults. Great trunk space. Love the large sunroof and interior appearance. My only complaint is the storage design of the center console area. There is supposed to be a wireless charging area but it is hard to access when the gear shift is in park and it rarely works to actually charge my phone. The only other storage space is up on the dash where things cook in the sun. I got an organizer for inside the center console so that has helped. It probably helps me have less clutter because there just isn’t an open spot to put stuff.

The Atlas has great space and I love the design and comfort of the interior. I do wish it had a little more power but it's only a 4 cylinder. My biggest issue with my atlas is the technology, the infotainment system is terrible. There are times it's blurry, or apple car play just doesn't work, or my gps doesn't sync with my car and it thinks I'm on a different road. Currently my windshield wipers go off when it's not even raining. My friend had an older atlas, 2021 or 2022, and she also had complaints about technology. It has served it's purpose but I'm ready for something new.

My kids call it, “the cool car.” It is. We got the R line and it is fancy, comfortable, fits two maxi cosi prias, a nuna infant seat in the second row, and the nuna booster in the back row! We fit our huge double stroller (Tule urban glide) in the trunk with the wheel removed. I feel so safe in this car. I highly recommend it.

I have a 2021+ se with tech 6 cyl, bought new, now has about 40k miles. Ive loved this car since buying it. Not had any issues. I’ve had just regular maintenance, a popped tire, and a new battery in the 5 years I’ve owned it. The only issue I’ve ever had was the cordless charging station. It’s very picky on how the phone sits when charging and since you use it while driving the phone shifts around and then stops charging. My SIL has a 4 cyl engine and has had a lot more problems. So maybe if looking to buy this car, go for the 6 cyl. I test drive both when buying and thought the 6 cyl was a much nicer ride. The 3rd row is the roomiest 3rd row I’ve even been in and the car itself can hold a ton if you are needing to haul anything. Somehow got a whole sheet of plywood to fit with the seats down. Overall, love this suv. Really happy with the purchase.

I have three car seats installed in second row - two rear facing and one front facing (twins plus big sibling), all kids under 3 yo. While slim fit seats fit beautifully, the summer heat can be tough to combat with the lack of AC vents for rear facing kids. Vents blast at the car seat since they are centrally located, behind the console. Would love if the vents were located higher up. Great trunk space with third row down. Still great trunk space with one seat down in third row - can fit a medium size dog back there! Our cattle dog loved her seat.

It’s worked very well for our family of four, both when the kids were younger and now when they are school age. I love the bench! It’s given us no mechanical issues and has only needed scheduled maintenance.

I researched the heck out of the Volkswagen Atlas and after the car mom reviewed, we test drove and purchased! Fits 3 nuna car seats and booster seat in the 2nd row comfortably which was the main struggle when looking for a car. We have had it a year and a half now and still loving it

I adore my Volkswagen Atlas. I bought it thanks to research and videos from the car mom and it’s been the perfect family car. The trunk space is huge, the 2nd row is also incredibly spacious and the front row feels big too! I the look of it and I’ve had no problems with it. I just wish my 2018 had remote start and ceiling vents in the back. Other than that, I’ll drive this car as long as I can!

I love this car- would own another after this! There is SO much room in the second row and a ton of trunk space when the third row is down. It has been a reliable family car for us so far. My one complaint is the lack of ceiling air vents!

I was heavily influenced by The Car Mom to get the Atlas and we haven’t been disappointed. I had just had my first child and knew that we would likely have more so we went with the 2nd row bench. This car has also provided great space for a growing family who often takes long road trips. A couple of things I don’t like about this car are the squeaky breaks, which is apparently common in VW’s. I also feel like the entertainment system is lacking compared to competitors. It would be nice if it was a little fancier.

This is the 3rd Atlas I have leased in the last 7 years. I initially got the Atlas when I was pregnant with my third, and the 3 across was an absolute dream. When I had my fourth baby, all of my kids were still in car seats. I put the older two in the 3rd row forward facing, and my younger two in the middle and driver’s side seats in the second row. This allowed easy access to the third row for my older two. I sometimes kept the seat folded down so they could climb back without having to move anything. Now that they are older, I currently have two booster seats in the third row for my older ones. I had to separate my younger two because they bother each other, so I have my rear facing child on the driver’s side and forward facing on the passenger’s side. This complicates loading a bit, but the carseat tilt makes it easy for my 9 year old to get to the third row and then pull back the seat herself. The trunk is decent size. Even with the third row up, I can still fit my city mini double stroller as long as I position it the right way. I love the tech and the utility mats. It drives great and I have never had any issues with it. I love everything about this car!

I purchased my Atlas certified preowned in 2022. The interior is what sold me. Out of the mid sized suvs in its time, it had the most space inside for second and third row passengers while still having a good amount of trunk space with the third row up. I have the captains chairs, which I personally prefer. The tech is impressive for the year also. I have the tan leather with all the tech features. Even at 7 years old, it still looks very fancy and has held up well. Kids in car seats have lots of room and there is a decent amount of space when sitting in the third row. The only negatives I would mention are the lack of air vents in the back. My son is a car sick kid and has been his entire life. He needs more air in the back and there are only very small floor vents. I wish it had an overhead one. Otherwise, it has been a great car for kids from age 1-8!

This has been a game changer for our family and having enough room. 2 kids in carseats (forward facing) and a 60lb dog. We are also available sports family so the trunk space is fantastic. Plenty of leg room in the 2nd row and a good amount (bigger than most) in the 3rd. I went with a older model, 2019, because I love having the knobs on the command center and not all touch screen. Do wish it has ceiling vents but because no Atlas does, I choose to buy used and get the knobs instead. Would recommend to any family with 2-4 kids!

We basically bought the Atlas for its look and 3rd row option. The storage I have when not using the 3rd row is amazing. I've been driving it over 7 years now and don't have any major complaints or issues... it's on the short list for when we start shopping for my next car.

For a mom with two kids, I truly LOVE this car. I had an expedition previously and wanted to downsize a bit (size of car and payment) and this car has been a perfect in between. It has just enough room, the trunk space even with third row up is plenty for weekend travels or sports equipment. My kids are both tall and have no issues being in carseats with my husband and I's seats set, we all have leg room. Third row is perfect for two people, although slightly less leg room its still doable especially for children

We bought this car for our growing family in 2023 when we had one kid. Now, we have a 4 year old, 2 year old, and one on the way! My husband showed me The Car Mom YouTube tour before we went to test drive, and I fell in love instantly - first, with Kelly, and with the Atlas. I am excited to see my girl in action as a 3 across machine. My only real grievance with Volkswagen? The second-row ceiling vents. Or lack thereof. My rear-facing kiddo is sweating like a sinner in church. Other than that - no notes. The cup holders are ELITE. The second row leg room is superior. The car drives smoothly and feels sporty. She is just an absolute queen. When this one dies, I’m just buying the new Atlas!

I’ve had my 2019 Atlas for over 7 years and it’s honestly been the best car! I went from 3 across in car seats to now just a high back booster in the second row. The car has grown with my family and I can honestly say I love it just as much today as the day I bought it. The inside feels luxurious yet simple and easy to navigate. I’ve sat in some cars and felt overwhelmed with all the buttons for things and this one is beautiful and minimalistic. I always told everyone that I accidentally bought my dream car. It truly is the best family vehicle! And very spacious inside. I love the flexibility of seating arrangements and the third row access is one of the main reasons I bought the car. I haven’t had any issues with it other than needing to replace the battery once. Otherwise it’s been dreamy!

I love the bench seat and I fit all 3 kids in the second row! Originally I had two convertibles and an infant car seat in the 2nd row. Then all 3 were in convertibles. Now, my oldest is in a booster and my other two are in convertibles! One forward facing and one still rear facing. I would definitely change a couple of things about my car. You can’t lock the car with the car on. This makes it hard when you’re doing a quick trip to drop of mail and don’t want to haul all 3 kids inside but it’s 80 degrees outside! Some people may not find that annoying, but I definitely do. Another issue is if you don’t turn off the auto off engine feature every time you get in the car, the car will turn off after a couple of minutes. When is this a problem? When my husbands driving and we stop at a gas station, he runs inside and forgets he never turned that feature off, so the car turns off with the rest of us inside! I have the SE so I do miss remote start but not a deal breaker.

We LOVE our Atlas! As soon as our second was born in Nov 2022 we knew we needed something a little bigger. The Atlas was an easy winner due to the car seat setups, huge trunk (especially with the 3rd row down) and I have always had an affinity for German cars. We were able to get one with the bench in the second row which was amazing for the baby years. Now that my children are a little older (almost 4 and 6), and knowing we are having no more children, I do find myself sometimes wishing for the captain chairs in the second row, but the bench still is very nice for holding their things and placing their toys and close enough they can grab things from that middle spot. I love having the flexibility on parking since it isn't a huge vehicle like a suburban, but still feels very spacious. Turns on a dime, and we have had zero issues with it since purchasing. I gave a lower rating on technology only because I have seen some of the newer top down camera views for parking vs just the standard back up camera which look so helpful and amazing in other newer models, as well as a bigger screen, but that's solely a by-product of the pace of new tech coming out, not a diss on the 2023 model at all. We've loved our car!

Bench seat for second row, love how much space there is in back. Foldable third row that full size adults can sit in comfortably. Really love the space in this car, when I look up marker nothing compares space wise for a mid size SUV!

I love my car! We purchased this for our growing family. We were stuck between a Grande Highlander and the Atlas. I don’t care for a lot of new technology and my husband prefers a V6. What sold us on the Atlas was how roomy the third row can be when needed. I’m 5’8 and all legs and felt somewhat cramped in the GH. I was pleasantly surprised with the leg room in the Atlas. Only wish is the rear vents were above not on the ground but that wasn’t a make or break for us.

We previously had a 2012 GMC Acadia and my husband (who is pretty tall/big) claims this is the most comfortable 3-Row vehicle we have owned that he doesn’t get uncomfortable in it when he drives. We have used it for long haul vacations with zero issues. I personally love that it still has knobs/buttons for climate control. Kids love the bench seat in middle row. Was very easy to install/move car seats when they were little.

Great for 3 across with a bench if you don’t want to use the 3rd row regularly, but not for 4. Wish I got the minivan! Also the technology is disappointing- the CarPlay is unreliable and cuts out often and I have a lot of screen display issues that require constant software updates. I find the touch screen distracting while driving- you can’t easily control the air without clicking into different screens.

I absolutely love my Atlas. We upgraded from the Tiguan for more space with our two kids. The interior is great. I can easily fit the car seats in the second row with a small to medium size person between. We love the third row option and big trunk space. Not sure I will ever want a different car, even if I have a third baby!

I’d give my Volkswagen Atlas a 4.1/5 overall. I really love the interior—simple, comfortable, and incredibly functional for a family. The second row is one of my favorite features because of how spacious it is. I have the bench seat, and I would choose it over captain’s chairs every time. It’s perfect for two or three kids and gives you more flexibility for passengers. The cargo space is also great, especially compared with other medium-to-full-size SUVs. It has been a really practical family vehicle with plenty of room for everyday life, kids, and all the extra stuff that comes with them. The Atlas is a great size overall, although I could definitely see myself moving up one size bigger someday for even more space.

We bought our Atlas to replace my husband’s truck. We wanted an SUV that had plenty of room, all wheel drive and towing capabilities. We have the bench seat for the second row and love it! We typically have the third row down as we currently have one baby and one dog. The trunk space in this car is hard to beat, we have used it to buy a new dryer, water heater and the typically “just bring the baby to the lake” necessities. It pulls what my husband needs it to and does well in St. Louis snow. I highly recommend the Atlas and will be getting another after this one.

This has been an incredible car for my family. We owned it for about 5 years now and it has been very reliable. Great trunk space. I have two Evenflo revolves in the second row and there has always been great clearance. One random thing I love is that I can easily move where the radio sound is so when I have on the sound machine app on my phone but I don’t want it to put me to sleep I can move the sound to the second row for a good car nap! We have the captains chairs so the car seats 6 and that has worked great for us. There have been multiple occasions where myself, my sister, or my parents will ride in the third row and we’ve always been comfortable! We also have taken it on many trips from NC to PA and have always had a ton of room to pack.

I love my car! The size is great. It doesn’t feel midsize when you sit in it. The space in both the second and third rows is great. I love that the third row has 2 bigger seats rather than 3 unusable seats. I feel really good driving it. I have 2 HUGE problems with it. 1) no ceiling vents. 2) the “buttons” on the infotainment center don’t light up at night. Super annoying. Over all I love it and highly recommend!

The second row is very roomy for adults and children. Car seat is easy to install, which we are currently using a Britax Grow with You but have installed a Nuna Rava too. The only thing it’s missing is ceiling vents for better ventilation. The appearance of this car is very sharp. I’m currently in the Peak Edition which adds a little flare to the car. The towing is great. We’ve only used it to tow trailers so far but that’s an awesome perk. The third row is great to have but we don’t use it often. The children are fine in the third row, but leg room is a little tight. Overall, this is a great family suv at a great price point.

I love my atlas! Only downfall is the third row is very tight for adults or teens. I have a 1.5 year old and a 1 month old in the captains seats and will sometimes sit in the third row to assist them and I as a 5”4 height it’s pretty tight in the leg area. Overall it’s a great family car!

This was the worst car I have ever owned. It was not a lemon because they couldn’t find anything wrong with it, but told me that was just how the car drives. The transmission was awful and jerky. The electronics were glitchy. The V6 was the slowest I have ever had. Maybe it was just that year, but if looking at a used one of these I would give it a VERY thorough test drive.

I love my atlas- I think it is perfect mom car. Another mom actually sold me on it in the daycare parking lot! The only thing I would change is adding ceiling vents in the second row! I have captain chairs (with car seats in both) and it works well for my oldest to get in and out of the back for the school carline.

We purchased a new 2023 Volkswagen Atlas in 2023, after owning a new 2020 Suburban Premier for 3 years. As our two kids got older (and outgrew bulky car seats), we began to consider slightly smaller SUVs. We test drove nearly every midsize three-row SUV with captains chairs on the market, and the Atlas was the clear front runner, with BY FAR the most spacious feeling interior. Every time someone rides in it, they comment on how roomy it is - even friends and family who drive GX 550s, Defenders, and Tahoes/Yukons. The second and third rows are genuinely comfortable for adults, and there’s still plenty of cargo space. For a family wanting three rows without moving into a full-size SUV, the Atlas is hard to beat.

Have had constant issues with the main screen in the car. While driving, it will completely shut off and go black or the CarPlay will malfunction (whether my phone is connected by cord or wifi) and will constantly connected and disconnect. This had been going on over a year and a half when I’ve only owned the car for two years and no one has a solution to it. The dealership has not found a way to fix it and when I contact VW corporate they states it was not a “safety issue” even though I expressed to them it IS when I’m using my GPS and the screen goes on while I’m driving. Additionally, the sensors will randomly malfunction and say the front and rear sensors are not able to detect anything. I would caution all moms about this car because while it may have a 5 star rating, the technology on it causes major safety issues.

I love my 2022 Atlas. It is spacious, well designed and safe. I had a tree fall on my car, thankfully while no one was in it, and it had minimal damage. I have yet to find a comparable mid-size SUV that gives you the interior space the atlas does. The atlas gives you flexibility for navigating tight city spaces, hauling kids sports equipment, driving around town or long distances.

The bench seat three across queen! We love her. The second and third row has ample leg room. The trunk is massive with third row down and still decent space when it is up. I know people complain about Volkswagens being a pain to repair but I have been driving this manufacturer since 2006 and have had no major issues with three different models. Only downfalls I have found with the Atlas: 1) I wish the bench seat didn’t have the 80/20 split and all three seats were separate. Would make access to third row & car seat configuration easier for our family but not a deal breaker as we don’t use the third row a ton and usually have it down. 2) The tech is decent but have always had issues with CarPlay staying connected. Again not a deal breaker but can be frustrating when using navigation. Overall an amazing three row family car would highly recommend! It serves us well without jumping up in price range to something like a Suburban/Expedition, etc.

My Atlas has been an amazing vehicle for our family of four! Adults can comfortably fit in both the second and third rows when needed, and there’s so much trunk space for everything our family needs. It drives great, feels comfortable, and has been the perfect fit for our family!

Overall, we're very happy with our Atlas. It is a larger mid-size SUV with ample leg room and truck space for our family of 4. The touch screen feels a little archaic and isn't the most intuitive, but once you learn where all the settings are, it is easy enough to navigate. We love the car seat configuration flexibility with our bench seat and feel like we have ample space for strollers/suitcases/wagons, etc. One con that has come up recently is that the tech can be a little glitchy. The wireless charger isn't very reliable and we've noticed that the speaker settings adjust themselves. I also wish the 2nd row had ceiling air vents. No serious structural or manufacturing issues.

I have the Volkswagen Atlas SE 2026 which is the base model. I have a 4 for Technology only because it does not come standard with an automatic trunk open. However, heated steering wheel and heated/ventilated seats. I have 2 under 2 and the second row bench is LIFE SAVING. I originally wanted captains chairs but the bench is so spacious. For longer trips I (or my husband) sit between them. It works so well and is not lacking in space for two rear facing car seats. I’d recommend this car for anyone looking for a budget friendly mid size suv with the most space!!!

I think this is a great car if you’re looking for a bigger car and not able to afford a bigger or luxury SUV. I think it’s a great buy for the price. It is nothing over the top but it looks nice, is reliable and spacious. If I were to buy a mid size SUV again, I would consider the Atlas.

I have loved my VW Atlas, influenced by The Car Mom. I have the captains seats and I knew I was done with 2 kids and it has been great. My biggest grip is the lack of ceiling vents. Now that my kids are older it’s not a huge deal but I always worried when they were babies in the summer. We have had a few issues with recalls and electrical errors but VW has fixed them under warranty.

I’ve owned my 2025 VW Atlas SEL for just over a year now, and overall, I absolutely love this car. It has a sporty but luxurious feel, is extremely comfortable, and has been a great family vehicle for us. I currently have two Nuna RAVA car seats in the second row, and I can still comfortably sit between them as a 5’7”, midsize woman. The third row is usually folded down for the extra cargo space, but when I have needed to use it, I’ve been really impressed with how comfortable it is—and there’s still plenty of trunk space with the third row up. There are really only two things I’ve wished VW would change. First, I really wish there were ceiling vents for the second row, especially with kids in car seats. Second, I wish there were a way to close the power liftgate from the driver’s seat. It would be especially convenient when doing grocery pickups and the employee forgets to close the hatch. I know, definitely a first-world problem, but it would be nice! For the first year and roughly 28,500 miles, we really haven’t had any issues. Unfortunately, this week we experienced our first major problem. I put the vehicle in park, and when I went to reverse, it would not shift out of Park or Neutral. I had it towed to the VW dealership, and interestingly, by the time it arrived, it was functioning normally. VW escalated the issue to their engineering team, and they recommended replacing the entire transmission. Thankfully, it’s still under the factory warranty, and I have to say the warranty experience has been great so far. VW has been responsive and has taken the issue seriously. That said, I’d be lying if I said I’m not nervous about how the vehicle will perform after an entire transmission replacement at only 28,500 miles. I’ve loved this Atlas and have had a great experience with it up until this point, so I’m hoping this was an isolated issue and that the new transmission gives us many more trouble-free miles.

I love this car, but the tech issues are a deal breaker for us! We bought our '24 SE w/ Tech in July 2025, pre-owned (it was our dealership's service loaner -- low mileage, barely driven). We LOVE the basics of the car. Super roomy for our 2 kids (2 & 5 now), comfortable seats, plentiful trunk space, great features (more on that later), super easy to drive. You get the benefits of a roomy vehicle without having to drive a giant one. Gas mileage isn't great in the city -- I mostly do city driving and average 19/20 mpg. However, on roadtrips I have gotten up to 27 mpg, which I am happy with. The HUGE con with this year is risk of infotainment issues. Since May 2026, our vehicle has had near constant infotainment issues. Apple Carplay rarely works, wireless or using the cord. I have read that the fix is to restart the headunit, however, pressing the power button rarely actually restarts the unit (it just does nothing). However, that is the least of our worries. The headunit constantly restarts on its own. When this happens, we have no access to Carplay, but it also turns off all of the safety features (lane keep assist, parking sensors, alerts, etc) and the back up camera does not work. We have also had issues with the screen activating and deactivating things on its own without us touching it. This has included turning heat on/off, turning volume all the way up, turning on heated seats, etc. At this point, the head unit (and safety features) only work about 40-50% of the time. We have taken it to the dealership 4 times since May. They have done multiple software updates that do not solve the problem. Most recently (as of August '26) they have told us there is no fix. So disappointing for a nearly new vehicle. I love the car itself, but will not be repurchasing and am considering selling even if the problem is fixed.

This car is amazing! It has been low maintanence for our family. There is more than enough room for family. We have taken this car on countless road trips and the trunk space is amazing! We recently came home from the airport with 2 kids, 4 adults and fit our 6 carryon suitcases plus more in the trunk (even with one seat in the 3rd row up!) I LOVE the car seat tilt feature and the 3rd row seats are very easy to pull up and put down. The cupholder availability is awesome throughout the car- even for the 3rd row. I do wish there were ceiling vents in the 2nd and 3rd row but my kids don't seem to complain. The included sunshades for the 2nd row are nice, although we don't use them as I added extra tint to my windows. I do wish the engine had a little more "get up and go" but this is really my only complaint about the car. When I have had things to fix (ex. replace battery, routine maintenance etc) I have had to use the dealership because other places have said they wouldn't service this vehicle so just take that into account before purchase if perhaps you don't live within a reasonable drive to a dealership! Overall I would defintely purchase this car again and again!

We love our VW Atlas. We originally bought her in 2022 after our 2nd baby with the intention of having 3 kids and doing 3 across in the second row, but surprise our 3rd baby was twins. We've made it work - the twins are in the second row (behind the driver and in the middle seat) and we keep the passenger seat down so the older 2 can easily get in and out for the carline at school. I've also managed to figure out how to fit a Wonderfold w4 in the trunk. With the twins still being rear-facing we use the floorboard of the second row for groceries IF the wagon is in the trunk. We live near a city that has a lot of street/parallel parking so having a midsize SUV that can still fit our family of 6 has been really nice. We haven't had any issues with her. She's been great - we take her to the dealership for regular maintenance and oil changes.

I’m loving my Atlas! Plenty of space in the second and third row, Apple CarPlay tech, and a great big moonroof. The built-in sun shades have come in really handy as well and when we were test driving cars I felt like nothing in the used market was coming up equivalently.

I live this car! I have a 6 year old and soon to have a newborn, but bought this with only one kiddo. I have a bench and love it! My third row stays down 99% of the time and my trunk is huge. But I’ve also ridden in the 3rd row and was comfortable! Love the center console size and that it has CarPlay that’s wireless. I purchased pre-owned with 60k miles and have had no issues now at 80k. It is so roomy and love that it can grow with us or accommodate friends/family. I still think about how much I love my car and have no desire to upgrade.

Originally leased this car for 3 years and then decided to purchase once the lease was up. I have loved this car for my 3 young kids, it is excellent for 3 across. I have the bench and have done many different combinations in the second row of infant seats, convertible seats and high back boosters. the trunk space is excellent, especially with the third row down- perfect for big costco hauls, road trips, dogs, etc. Pros: -Interior design is sleek and comfortable -Good combination of screen and buttons -Excellent bench in second row and trunk space -No major issues, very reliable -Great cup holders and center console design Cons: - Wireless Apple Car Play is great 70% of the time, but it cuts out easily when I drive in certain areas and sometimes the screen goes black and it's difficult to get it back. This happens about once per month. - Have had a couple issues with the power windows not always responding to the buttons -AC recently stopped working after 5 years, but easily fixed -No ceiling vents in second row Overall it's been a fantastic car for a family of 5 (plus a large dog) and I would absolutely purchase it again.

When I was pregnant with our second baby we were in the market for a car. My car previously was a small hatchback. We ended up with a white SEL R-line black which looks great and more unqiue in a world of many Atlases. I was set on getting the brown interior bench! I’m glad I did as I now do 3 across and don’t have to sacrifice my trunk space with a third. I have 2 RF in Nuna Ravas and my oldest is on the middle FF with the famous Graco slim fix lx 3 in 1. The only issue with my current set up is that my oldest is asking about sitting in a booster and I don’t think she can really reach a seat belt buckle in the middle with the two car seats on each side. Cons - infotainment system frequently freezes/restarts - wireless charging is unreliable - no ceiling vents in the second row, my oldest is freezing cold with the vents on her in the middle and the younger kids on the sides are warm and not getting any direct air

10/10 no regrets love the Atlas. We leased this car because of The Car Mom! We knew we’d have 3 kids in car seats during the lease term, the price point was perfect for our needs (SE trim level), and I have loved every second of driving it. Leasing made most sense for us during the growing family phase we’re in. Pros: interior feels amazing even at base trim level, drive and acceleration is great, fits a ton of car seat setups, and 3rd row is useable when family is in town. Cons: The SE trim level doesn’t have power tailgate. I am not a bells and whistles car person but if I could go back, I’d get a trim level with a power tailgate. The trunk is SO HEAVY and hard to close especially with groceries/kids/full hands. Our Hyundai Santa Fe trunk is light as a feather in comparison. Wish the volume and temp controls on the dash glowed in the dark or had some tactile feature, they’re impossible to find driving at night. I’ve also had an annoying issue with the infotainment system where Apple CarPlay randomly crashes and doesn’t reconnect unless I fully turn off the car and open the driver door before restarting. It wasn’t resolved during a regular maintenance appt but haven’t brought it back in specifically for that issue.

The Atlas has been wonderful for our family. I’m 5’10” with long legs and we knew both of our boys (5 and 2 y/o currently) would be tall so leg room was important to us when purchasing. We have captain’s chairs in the 2nd row which we’ve loved as our boys have been able to climb in/out independently. I really love that the 3rd row has only 2 seats because it fits an actual adult comfortably! We are fairly active traveling out of state, making bulk grocery hauls, etc. and the cargo space with 3rd row down has been plenty for us. I drive a LOT for my job so I spend a majority of my time in here and it’s very comfortable. I only gave 4 stars for interior design because there’s no ceiling vents for rear passengers, otherwise she would be a perfect 5 stars!

I spent 4 months researching cars before deciding on the Atlas. I test drove over 15 cars which I will review on here and the used Atlas was the best deal we could get for a 3 year old car that gave us a safe, roomy and more updated car for our future. I really wanted ventilated seats, heated steering, brown leather and more space! I was trading in a 2017 Mazda CX-5 (GREAT car) to have more room and I wanted a payment less than $500 a month. We ended up getting it under $400. Does VW have some reliable questions? Sure but they didn't seem as serious as some of the other cars we were looking at and the price point allows us to replace the engine if we REALLY had to. Knowing we have one in daycare, might have a second, living in a very high cost of living area, we wanted to keep our payment low while getting all the nice to haves. Now, I have only had the car a few weeks. I bought it with 25k miles on it. I even called the original dealer and went through all of the repairs done on it to make sure it wasn't engine related. I'm impressed that I can get 28/29 mpg keeping the car on eco mode for most longer (30 min+ ) drives. I love how much space we have. We had so much room for a recent week long trip to the beach. The only thing I'm still figuring out is the tech aspects. Coming from a 2017, there are a lot of new things to learn. There are definitely nuances to using remote start. I had a slightly nerve wracking moment when I tried to use remote start - so I didn't know it locks the car. My daughter was in the car and the keys were in the car and it locked. I couldn't get in. Luckily, I had my phone to unlock it. One thing I read a lot about is how many people hate the controls because it's all touch. I don't think it's an issue really. I liked buttons but there is more control esp for rear.

I love how much room there is and there is plenty of trunk space with all 3 rows up. The car is only 5 years old, 118,000 miles and it is having some issues. It won’t let me remote start anymore, it won’t let the lights turn on with the doors, it says there’s an issue with the battery being low, I took it in and everything is working and battery has 100% life left. It feels like you’re driving a really big vehicle.

I absolutely love my Atlas! I started listening to the car mom the year I got married and because car prices were so good post pandemic, I got an excellent trade-in value, also due to the car mom and her trade-in course! I bought this car to prepare for a growing family in the future. I now have a one year-old and another baby on the way. They will be 15 months apart so two infant seats/ convertible seats are in our future for the next few years! The only regret I have with this particular car is that I did get the captains chairs, so when we add the additional baby if I want to ride in the back with both kids, I would have to be in the third row, but I will say the trunk space is still superior even with the third row. I can easily fit my Mockingbird double seat back there. The space and the rest of the car is also amazing, with of room for diaper bags and car toys. I also wish there were ceiling vents in the back. In the summer, I keep a mini stroller fan attached to the headrest to blow on my son. The only reason I gave the technology a four star versus five was because the wireless Apple CarPlay can sometimes be finicky, and I really find the wireless charging useless. Other than that, the rest of the tech is great. We currently have the Evenflo revolve 360 behind the driver seat, and no matter who is driving there is plenty of room for that seat and for that seat to rotate. Our infant seat is the Nuna Pippa and same comments about they’re being plenty of room!

I love that for 95% of the time, I have the third row down and a huge trunk. When I need to haul extra kids, it is super easy to set up the third row. My kids are tall teenagers and have plenty of room in the second row.

Feels a little underpowered or that the gearing could be tuned a bit better for the powertrain. Styling with the 21” wheels on our SEL Premium is cool. Adaptive Cruise Control has intermittent issues. 3rd row is easy to use and cargo space is great when 3rd row is folded down. We’ve had really no service issues outside the normal wear and tear items like brakes, tires etc. drivers lcd screen is great. Passenger sun screens are awesome. The 2nd row would be that my better with air vents on the roof…the backwards facing car seat here do not get good air flow.
