2022 Volkswagen Atlas

Features We Love
  • Best in Class Carseat Capability: The second row is extremely car seat friendly. There are three sets of lower anchors across the bench and tether anchors on all five rear seats. The car-seat-friendly tilt feature is a game changer because you can access the third row without uninstalling a car seat
  • Comfortable Third Row & Cargo: The third row is surprisingly usable for a midsize SUV. I had actual legroom back there, and it comes with side vents, cup holders, and lighting. Even with the third row up, you still get about 18 cubic feet of cargo space, which is enough to fit a full-size stroller plus a little extra.
  • Big, Spacious SUV in the Mid-Size Class: The Atlas is one of the largest mid-size SUVs on the market, great for families who want more space without jumping to full-size or a minivan.
Car Mom Review

The Exterior

Volkswagen keeps the Atlas simple — and I mean that in the best way.

The front end is bold with a prominent VW badge, subtle chrome accents, and cohesive hood lines that make it look strong without being overdesigned. The 20-inch rims give it a sporty stance, and I love how the beltline follows the curve of the wheel well. Around back, you get wraparound taillights and a clean chrome bar with ATLAS embossed into it.

It’s sleek. It’s athletic. It’s not trying too hard.

The Atlas comes with two engine choices:

  • 4-cylinder
  • 3.6L V6

I’ve driven both, and I personally prefer the V6. It offers stronger performance and better towing capacity, which matters for families hauling boats, trailers, or campers. Yes, it comes with a higher price tag but the added power feels worth it to me

First Row

The Atlas interior has always been one of my favorites for pure functionality.

It doesn’t feel flashy. It doesn’t feel overly intricate. It just works.

What Stands Out:

  • Digital dash (on SE with Tech)
  • Simple, intuitive infotainment system
  • Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
  • Physical climate controls
  • Huge center console
  • Massive door cubbies (40oz water bottle approved)

The screen is smaller than many competitors, but it’s functional. I’d mostly use CarPlay anyway.

I especially appreciate how easy it is to adjust rear climate from the front. If you’re a parent, you know how important that is when a kid starts yelling that they’re hot.

The center console is deep and wide, with additional USB-C ports inside. Volkswagen has fully moved to USB-C, so that’s what you’ll find throughout.

Cup holders? Elite. Volkswagen consistently nails cup holder design.

Second Row

Second Row: Bench or Captain’s Chairs

The Atlas offers both configurations:

  • Bench = 7 passengers
  • Captain’s chairs = 6 passengers

And I will say it loud and clear:
The Atlas bench is amazing.

It’s wide enough for legitimate three-across setups. Even with captain’s chairs, though, the space is impressive.

Car Seat Setup:

  • Lower anchors in outboard seats
  • Tether anchors in all four rear seating positions
  • Built-in sunshades
  • Excellent side cubbies

Only downside, no ceiling vents!!

Third Row Access:

One of my favorite features in the Atlas is the car-seat-friendly tilt.

If your car seat is installed with lower anchors, you can tilt and slide the entire seat forward to access the third row — without uninstalling the seat.

This works great for:

  • Infant seat bases
  • Forward-facing seats with LATCH
  • Boosters with lower anchor connectors

That feature alone makes the Atlas incredibly practical for growing families.

Third Row

Third Row: Shockingly Spacious

Here’s the thing about the Atlas — the third row is actually usable.

At six feet tall, I still have:

  • Solid headroom
  • Good knee clearance
  • Wide seating
  • Pillar-mounted vents
  • Cup holders and cubbies

The third-row ventilation is actually better positioned than the second row vents.

And because it’s only two seats back there, you get actual elbow room.

No items found.

Trunk

With the third row up, you get 20.6 cubic feet of cargo space, which is strong for a midsize seven-passenger SUV.

My UPPAbaby Vista fits back there — and that’s saying something.

There are also:

  • Side storage compartments
  • Illuminated cargo areas
  • Easy fold-flat third row seats

When the third row is down, the trunk becomes impressively spacious.

For reference, only vehicles like the Chevy Traverse and Buick Enclave offer more cargo room in this category.

Safety

The 2022 Atlas received a 5-Star overall safety rating from NHTSA but was not a Top Safety pick from the IIHS.

I want to call out the lack of second and third-row seat belt pre-tensioners. Pretensioners remove slack from the seat belt in the nanoseconds before a crash, dramatically reducing injury in frontal and near-frontal collisions. This feature has been standard in front seats for nearly two decades, but not in the back seats. While this doesn’t affect children in harnessed car seats, it does affect other passengers.

Safety Features:

  • Forward Collision Warning with Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Electronic Stability Control and traction control
  • Lane Keep Assist (available)
  • Adapative Cruise Control (available)

Car Seat Setup

Don't want a full-size SUV, but still need to fit 4–5 kids in car seats? The Atlas is the car that can fit everyone practically and comfortably.

Second Row Options & Car Seat Access

The second row offers either a bench seat or captain’s chairs, and both feature car-seat-friendly tilt. The Atlas bench is arguably the best midsize SUV to accommodate three-across setups.

Every seating position in the second and third rows has:

  • A removable head restraint
  • A top tether anchor

Every second-row seating position also has lower anchors. Lower anchors are notably missing from the third row. While they are not necessary for a safe car seat installation, they are helpful for booster seats. Many boosters offer lower anchor connectors to keep the seat secure when unoccupied. Otherwise, the booster seat should be buckled in with a seat belt to keep it from becoming a projectile in a crash.

Important Second Row Details

The second-row center lower anchors are unfortunately overlapped by the outboard behind-the-driver seat belt. That means if you want to use the center seat’s lower anchors, you cannot use the outboard driver’s seat belt at the same time.

Additionally, the space between the seat belt buckle for the center position and the buckle for the adjacent position is very small. This means most car seats are too wide to install in the middle seat without resting on the belt buckle, which can damage the buckle.

Refer to your owner’s manual for specific guidance, but you can contact VW for a buckle cover if you wish to install a larger car seat in the center position. The buckle cover renders the outboard passenger buckle useless.

Translation:

If you want to install the outboard seat with the seat belt (usually needed for three-across installs), your center car seat must be:

  • Very narrow
  • Installed using the seat belt

Enter the Graco SlimFit3 LX. While some other narrow car seats work here too, nothing is as versatile as this seat.

Best Car Seat Fits in the Second Row

The wide outboard seats can accommodate just about any car seat. There’s also plenty of legroom to fit large seats front-to-back.

If you plan to use both the second and third rows for passengers simultaneously, I recommend using a compact car seat in the second row to preserve third-row legroom.

Examples of compact seats include:

  • Graco Extend2Fit 3 in 1
  • Nuna Rava
  • Britax Poplar

Third Row Space & Access

The third row has two full-size seats and can comfortably fit:

  • Adults
  • Children in boosters
  • Children in car seats

Rear-facing seats fit, but they must be compact.

To access the third row, use the car-seat-tilt feature, which moves the seat up and forward without compromising a car seat installed with LATCH. Of course, this also works with no car seat installed.

A rotating car seat is a great option here so even a rear-facing seat can take advantage of car-seat tilt.

Car seats that rotate and have higher lower anchor weight limits in rear-facing mode include:

  • Evenflo Revolve360 Slim
  • Graco EasyTurn360

These seats are also compatible in a three-across configuration next to a narrow, low-profile, forward-facing car seat in the center, like the Graco SlimFit3 LX.

Car Seats That Are NOT Compatible

Any forward-facing harnessed seat or booster seat that:

  1. Requires a head restraint
  2. Does not permit a gap caused by a head restraint

This is less of a problem in the second row since the head restraints are relatively flush to the seat, particularly in the center position.

However, the third-row head restraints are extremely bulky when not removed for a car or booster seat installation.

Can You Use Lower Anchors & Seat Belt Together?

Another common question is whether the lower anchors and seat belt may be used together if the car seat permits it.

Yes — if the car seat permits using both lower anchors and the seat belt, VW also permits it.

At the time of this writing, the only car seats that permit this are:

  • Nuna Pipa
  • Clek Foonf (forward-facing)
  • babyark
  • Axkid One3

I love this car, but the tech issues are a deal breaker for us! We bought our '24 SE w/ Tech in July 2025, pre-owned (it was our dealership's service loaner -- low mileage, barely driven). We LOVE the basics of the car. Super roomy for our 2 kids (2 & 5 now), comfortable seats, plentiful trunk space, great features (more on that later), super easy to drive. You get the benefits of a roomy vehicle without having to drive a giant one. Gas mileage isn't great in the city -- I mostly do city driving and average 19/20 mpg. However, on roadtrips I have gotten up to 27 mpg, which I am happy with. The HUGE con with this year is risk of infotainment issues. Since May 2026, our vehicle has had near constant infotainment issues. Apple Carplay rarely works, wireless or using the cord. I have read that the fix is to restart the headunit, however, pressing the power button rarely actually restarts the unit (it just does nothing). However, that is the least of our worries. The headunit constantly restarts on its own. When this happens, we have no access to Carplay, but it also turns off all of the safety features (lane keep assist, parking sensors, alerts, etc) and the back up camera does not work. We have also had issues with the screen activating and deactivating things on its own without us touching it. This has included turning heat on/off, turning volume all the way up, turning on heated seats, etc. At this point, the head unit (and safety features) only work about 40-50% of the time. We have taken it to the dealership 4 times since May. They have done multiple software updates that do not solve the problem. Most recently (as of August '26) they have told us there is no fix. So disappointing for a nearly new vehicle. I love the car itself, but will not be repurchasing and am considering selling even if the problem is fixed.

This car is amazing! It has been low maintanence for our family. There is more than enough room for family. We have taken this car on countless road trips and the trunk space is amazing! We recently came home from the airport with 2 kids, 4 adults and fit our 6 carryon suitcases plus more in the trunk (even with one seat in the 3rd row up!) I LOVE the car seat tilt feature and the 3rd row seats are very easy to pull up and put down. The cupholder availability is awesome throughout the car- even for the 3rd row. I do wish there were ceiling vents in the 2nd and 3rd row but my kids don't seem to complain. The included sunshades for the 2nd row are nice, although we don't use them as I added extra tint to my windows. I do wish the engine had a little more "get up and go" but this is really my only complaint about the car. When I have had things to fix (ex. replace battery, routine maintenance etc) I have had to use the dealership because other places have said they wouldn't service this vehicle so just take that into account before purchase if perhaps you don't live within a reasonable drive to a dealership! Overall I would defintely purchase this car again and again!

We love our VW Atlas. We originally bought her in 2022 after our 2nd baby with the intention of having 3 kids and doing 3 across in the second row, but surprise our 3rd baby was twins. We've made it work - the twins are in the second row (behind the driver and in the middle seat) and we keep the passenger seat down so the older 2 can easily get in and out for the carline at school. I've also managed to figure out how to fit a Wonderfold w4 in the trunk. With the twins still being rear-facing we use the floorboard of the second row for groceries IF the wagon is in the trunk. We live near a city that has a lot of street/parallel parking so having a midsize SUV that can still fit our family of 6 has been really nice. We haven't had any issues with her. She's been great - we take her to the dealership for regular maintenance and oil changes.

I’m loving my Atlas! Plenty of space in the second and third row, Apple CarPlay tech, and a great big moonroof. The built-in sun shades have come in really handy as well and when we were test driving cars I felt like nothing in the used market was coming up equivalently.

I live this car! I have a 6 year old and soon to have a newborn, but bought this with only one kiddo. I have a bench and love it! My third row stays down 99% of the time and my trunk is huge. But I’ve also ridden in the 3rd row and was comfortable! Love the center console size and that it has CarPlay that’s wireless. I purchased pre-owned with 60k miles and have had no issues now at 80k. It is so roomy and love that it can grow with us or accommodate friends/family. I still think about how much I love my car and have no desire to upgrade.

Originally leased this car for 3 years and then decided to purchase once the lease was up. I have loved this car for my 3 young kids, it is excellent for 3 across. I have the bench and have done many different combinations in the second row of infant seats, convertible seats and high back boosters. the trunk space is excellent, especially with the third row down- perfect for big costco hauls, road trips, dogs, etc. Pros: -Interior design is sleek and comfortable -Good combination of screen and buttons -Excellent bench in second row and trunk space -No major issues, very reliable -Great cup holders and center console design Cons: - Wireless Apple Car Play is great 70% of the time, but it cuts out easily when I drive in certain areas and sometimes the screen goes black and it's difficult to get it back. This happens about once per month. - Have had a couple issues with the power windows not always responding to the buttons -AC recently stopped working after 5 years, but easily fixed -No ceiling vents in second row Overall it's been a fantastic car for a family of 5 (plus a large dog) and I would absolutely purchase it again.

When I was pregnant with our second baby we were in the market for a car. My car previously was a small hatchback. We ended up with a white SEL R-line black which looks great and more unqiue in a world of many Atlases. I was set on getting the brown interior bench! I’m glad I did as I now do 3 across and don’t have to sacrifice my trunk space with a third. I have 2 RF in Nuna Ravas and my oldest is on the middle FF with the famous Graco slim fix lx 3 in 1. The only issue with my current set up is that my oldest is asking about sitting in a booster and I don’t think she can really reach a seat belt buckle in the middle with the two car seats on each side. Cons - infotainment system frequently freezes/restarts - wireless charging is unreliable - no ceiling vents in the second row, my oldest is freezing cold with the vents on her in the middle and the younger kids on the sides are warm and not getting any direct air

10/10 no regrets love the Atlas. We leased this car because of The Car Mom! We knew we’d have 3 kids in car seats during the lease term, the price point was perfect for our needs (SE trim level), and I have loved every second of driving it. Leasing made most sense for us during the growing family phase we’re in. Pros: interior feels amazing even at base trim level, drive and acceleration is great, fits a ton of car seat setups, and 3rd row is useable when family is in town. Cons: The SE trim level doesn’t have power tailgate. I am not a bells and whistles car person but if I could go back, I’d get a trim level with a power tailgate. The trunk is SO HEAVY and hard to close especially with groceries/kids/full hands. Our Hyundai Santa Fe trunk is light as a feather in comparison. Wish the volume and temp controls on the dash glowed in the dark or had some tactile feature, they’re impossible to find driving at night. I’ve also had an annoying issue with the infotainment system where Apple CarPlay randomly crashes and doesn’t reconnect unless I fully turn off the car and open the driver door before restarting. It wasn’t resolved during a regular maintenance appt but haven’t brought it back in specifically for that issue.

The Atlas has been wonderful for our family. I’m 5’10” with long legs and we knew both of our boys (5 and 2 y/o currently) would be tall so leg room was important to us when purchasing. We have captain’s chairs in the 2nd row which we’ve loved as our boys have been able to climb in/out independently. I really love that the 3rd row has only 2 seats because it fits an actual adult comfortably! We are fairly active traveling out of state, making bulk grocery hauls, etc. and the cargo space with 3rd row down has been plenty for us. I drive a LOT for my job so I spend a majority of my time in here and it’s very comfortable. I only gave 4 stars for interior design because there’s no ceiling vents for rear passengers, otherwise she would be a perfect 5 stars!

I spent 4 months researching cars before deciding on the Atlas. I test drove over 15 cars which I will review on here and the used Atlas was the best deal we could get for a 3 year old car that gave us a safe, roomy and more updated car for our future. I really wanted ventilated seats, heated steering, brown leather and more space! I was trading in a 2017 Mazda CX-5 (GREAT car) to have more room and I wanted a payment less than $500 a month. We ended up getting it under $400. Does VW have some reliable questions? Sure but they didn't seem as serious as some of the other cars we were looking at and the price point allows us to replace the engine if we REALLY had to. Knowing we have one in daycare, might have a second, living in a very high cost of living area, we wanted to keep our payment low while getting all the nice to haves. Now, I have only had the car a few weeks. I bought it with 25k miles on it. I even called the original dealer and went through all of the repairs done on it to make sure it wasn't engine related. I'm impressed that I can get 28/29 mpg keeping the car on eco mode for most longer (30 min+ ) drives. I love how much space we have. We had so much room for a recent week long trip to the beach. The only thing I'm still figuring out is the tech aspects. Coming from a 2017, there are a lot of new things to learn. There are definitely nuances to using remote start. I had a slightly nerve wracking moment when I tried to use remote start - so I didn't know it locks the car. My daughter was in the car and the keys were in the car and it locked. I couldn't get in. Luckily, I had my phone to unlock it. One thing I read a lot about is how many people hate the controls because it's all touch. I don't think it's an issue really. I liked buttons but there is more control esp for rear.

I love how much room there is and there is plenty of trunk space with all 3 rows up. The car is only 5 years old, 118,000 miles and it is having some issues. It won’t let me remote start anymore, it won’t let the lights turn on with the doors, it says there’s an issue with the battery being low, I took it in and everything is working and battery has 100% life left. It feels like you’re driving a really big vehicle.

I absolutely love my Atlas! I started listening to the car mom the year I got married and because car prices were so good post pandemic, I got an excellent trade-in value, also due to the car mom and her trade-in course! I bought this car to prepare for a growing family in the future. I now have a one year-old and another baby on the way. They will be 15 months apart so two infant seats/ convertible seats are in our future for the next few years! The only regret I have with this particular car is that I did get the captains chairs, so when we add the additional baby if I want to ride in the back with both kids, I would have to be in the third row, but I will say the trunk space is still superior even with the third row. I can easily fit my Mockingbird double seat back there. The space and the rest of the car is also amazing, with of room for diaper bags and car toys. I also wish there were ceiling vents in the back. In the summer, I keep a mini stroller fan attached to the headrest to blow on my son. The only reason I gave the technology a four star versus five was because the wireless Apple CarPlay can sometimes be finicky, and I really find the wireless charging useless. Other than that, the rest of the tech is great. We currently have the Evenflo revolve 360 behind the driver seat, and no matter who is driving there is plenty of room for that seat and for that seat to rotate. Our infant seat is the Nuna Pippa and same comments about they’re being plenty of room!

I love that for 95% of the time, I have the third row down and a huge trunk. When I need to haul extra kids, it is super easy to set up the third row. My kids are tall teenagers and have plenty of room in the second row.

Feels a little underpowered or that the gearing could be tuned a bit better for the powertrain. Styling with the 21” wheels on our SEL Premium is cool. Adaptive Cruise Control has intermittent issues. 3rd row is easy to use and cargo space is great when 3rd row is folded down. We’ve had really no service issues outside the normal wear and tear items like brakes, tires etc. drivers lcd screen is great. Passenger sun screens are awesome. The 2nd row would be that my better with air vents on the roof…the backwards facing car seat here do not get good air flow.

I bought this car to have a third row for adults because the grandparents come with us a lot. The car is very roomy and the reason I bought. Also plenty of room for an adult in the middle seat between two car seats in the second row (which is where my kids like me to sit when I’m not driving - they are in an uppababy mesa v2 and a nuna rava). Things I don’t like about the car: Everything is on the screen including the climate control. There are very few tap buttons (temperature and audio). Definitely miss the buttons. It also doesn’t have the most pick up in a car but it’s a pretty big car with only a 4-cylinder and turbo. The 2023 has a V6 and more knobs so maybe that is the best year.

I traded by beloved 2016 BMW X5 for a certified pre-owned 2023 VW Atlas SEL V6. While I don't love this car the same way I loved my X5, it was absolutely the right move and I don't regret it. Why the Atlas works for us: - Comfortably fits our 3 adult-sized (5'6"+) children (ages 15, 13, and 10). Whether they're sitting three across in the second row or sitting in the third row, everyone has plenty of room. After about 5,000 miles of road tripping this year, I can confirm our tallest teen was happy and comfortably nesting in the third row all summer. - Good cargo capacity with the third row up and amazing capacity with the third row down. We fit five hard-case roller carry-on bags, plus soft-sided bags on top of those, in the trunk with the third row up. With the third row down you could move your daughter to college (and obviously your son, but he's just going to pack a duffle bag and a pillow). - Has all the current safety and tech features AND ACTUAL BUTTONS AND KNOBS for climate control. I care deeply about having buttons and knobs. I do not care about giant screens. - Uses regular 87 gasoline (this brings me joy after a decade of needing premium) and I average 24.5 MPGs and get up to 28 MPGs on the interstate. Note: I live in a semi-rural area and don't do a ton of city driving. - Affordability is relative, but for us, this was affordable. We're about to have a teen driver in a few months (meaning sky rocketing insurance payments), college tuition in two years, and we just didn't want a car payment. Buying CPO meant paying cash instead of having a payment and I don't regret that one bit. What I don't love: - I kind of dislike how it drives. I was spoiled with a BMW before this and the Atlas just isn't as smooth, agile, or powerful. (Reminding myself how much I'm saving on gas though...) - The interior feels a little cheap and plastic-y compared to my X5. It's a nicely designed car and I do think it's stylish, but it's not luxury.

I bought my atlas when baby #3 was on the way. It was really important to me to be able to fit all 3 kids in the second row bench. We had an infant bucket and two 5 point harness boosters and we had flexibility on where to install them which was so great. Baby #4 came quick after #3 so the 4 year old went to the third row while the 6 year old was in the middle row, middle seat to help with the two littles. We got a revolving car seat to help with the carline pick up in and out too. We travel long distances to visit family often and we all fit comfortably (including our big dog) with a hard shell luggage carrier on top. We debated moving up to a Yukon/Yukon XL and it just felt too big. 4 kids in car seats will be tough regardless of the car and I like the ease of parking and navigating tight streets. We’ve had a few technology glitches which have been a little frustrating but not enough so that I would trade it in. Also love the little cubbie storage under the gear shift in the ‘24+ models!

This is for the excelline/R line trim level. In terms of functionality, the VW Atlas is great. It's a comfortable drive, tonnes of space in the second and third row. The third row is real, and can fit 6 feet tall visitors. The trunk is spacious. I am, however, dinging this car for reliability. I've had major issues with my rear driver's door not opening at all, and with the driver's door not latching closed. Both were known issues (the dealership had repair kits ready), but not yet recalls. The infotainment system randomly dies completely while driving. I've also had 3 separate recalls requiring service at the dealership in 2.5 years. I've honestly had more trouble with this Atlas in the 2 years and ~20 000 km I've driven it than I had with my base model 2015 Subaru forester in the 10 years I had it. We knew reliably might be an issue when we got this car, but still chose it for functionality. It's tough to have your car not be drivable. I'm in the greater Toronto area, and this is really tough.

We are loving this car! Plenty of room to do 3 across and so much room for dog and luggage with the 3rd row down. It drives nicely and has surprisingly good gas mileage (better than advertised for us). For reference, I like how sturdy Fords feel and find Toyotas too sensitive and this lands somewhere in the middle; not too heavy, not too buttery. I miss nobs for volume and climate control, but for the price we got, I’ll adapt. We got the SE trim with a tech package and it is more than enough for a basic driver like me. The wireless Apple CarPlay is great and the VW system has been very intuitive (what User Manual?). The Adaptive Cruise Control is great, but if don’t use your turn signals consistently, it’s going to be annoying. It’s a must for long drives (1hr+) which I do about once a week. I have ridden in the 3rd with a car seat next to me and was comfortable enough to fall asleep (I’m 5’6”). I think we will need a less bulky car seat for my tall 3yo to sit in the 3rd row consistently, but he was fine for a 45min drive. 2nd row has GREAT legroom, is on rails for easy adjusting, has the car seat tilt, and 60/40 split: a car seat dream. With the 3rd row up/occupied, the trunk has room for a stroller or a wagon or Costco run. We picked this car over the CX90 because of the trunk space.

We bought this car with a bench seat when we found out we were pregnant with our first . It has been a GREAT car. We knew we wanted more kids and also have a large dog that needed a lot of trunk space. The Atlas has delivered on all fronts. VW is not known for its tech especially in 2018 but I know that buying the car. The tech is sufficient for what we need. The only real negative is the lack of ceiling vents for rear facing car seats. We did buy a NOGGLE and used it until all 3 were forward facing. Car seats we have had: 2 rear facing cybex Eternis S and one forward facing Eternis S. Forward facing in the middle seat. We currently have a Diono Everett High back booster and 2 Graco Slimfit3 LX all forward facing. Plenty of room for the booster to buckle but overall the Gracos are my least fav of the car seats we have had.

Love the space and how it drives. Recently had an issue needing a fuel pump injector/harness. Luckily, that was under warranty. My one complaint is the breaks making a grinding annoying noise occasionally, due to the material they use in their break pads. One other issue I’ve had is the gas flap door got stuck and I had to get it replaced because there is no emergency lever to manually open it. Other than that it’s been a great car over the last five years.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Atlas! It’s bougie on a budget. It gives a lot of storage, and space for adults in the backseat. My husband (6ft 2in) has comfortably sat in the third row. The trunk with the 3rd row up isn’t the largest trunk on the market for a midsize SUV but it’s manageable. I have still been able to fit a Sam’s run and a stroller. If I find myself where I need more space, I will place my small travel stroller in between my captains chairs. I have enjoyed the reliability and functionality of the atlas. The only downside is my wireless CarPlay crashes occasionally. It could just be my car though! #TeamAtlas

The comfort and styling of this vehicle has been great! My daughter is 6ft and she rides comfortably in the 2nd row and 3rd row. The bucket seats are great for my 2 teens. The seats are comfy and there’s plenty of storage in the back. It has a sporty feel but plenty of room. The technology features on the 2021 Atlas are great. My trim level is the R-Line which includes all the upgraded technology features like lane assist. I would highly recommend this car for families with littles as well as teens. It has so much room. The only thing I wish it had more of is cup holders!

I love the functionality and design of my Atlas. I have enjoyed having a third row and more space for our travel. The car drives smoothly and gets great gas mileage for a larger car. My one complaint would be the tech and screen. Apple car play can disconnect and really throw me for a doozy when I’m using my maps or disrupts my toddlers song (iykyk) otherwise I would give this car 5 stars across the board!

The atlas is a great “mom car”. At the time the price was right and felt so luxurious for the price. It truly had everything I wanted in a car- sunroof, captains chairs, leather seats, heated seats, car play… all the things. I really don’t have any complaints. My husband is 6’4 and I’m 5’7 and we fit very comfortably. We had an uppababy v2 infant seat and then got a britax one4life both rear and forward facing positions. I wish I would have had the bench seat to allow the ease of knowing things were contained in the trunk because we had the 3rd row down 90% of the time. We leased is which is what lead us to our current expedition purchase but we did look at getting it again if the price was right but the new one was basically the same price as the expedition for twice the amount of room so that’s why we switched.

This is my second atlas. We also had a 2021 that we purchased brand new. It has so many issues that by 2024 we figured they would have worked the kinks out so we bought a new one. The 2024 has all of the exact issues, and more. First- the tech is horrible. The screen randomly turns off (and sometimes won’t turn back on until the next day despite turning the car off and back on), sometimes the CarPlay just randomly disconnects and won’t reconnect, if plugged in to charge, nothing will play, etc. I’ve had the car in she shop over 15 times and they cannot fix it. They’ve even replaced the screen. The service manager eventually told me that while under warranty VW will not allow them to fully fix it because the warranty is supposed to repair things to work “the same as other atlas models”.. and none of them work. Next, all of the buttons are so sensitive, if I open or close the sunroof interior lights turn on or off. While driving, the RPMS shoot up super high but the car doesn’t switch gears. There are also issues with the brakes grinding and squealing that they cannot resolve. Sensors telling me that my headlights aren’t working light up every time it rains or I go through the car wash. The interior of the car works well for us. We have one rear facing poplar behind the driver and a forward facing poplar on the passenger side. We have a bench seat so we also have a chicco my fit in the middle. My kids are all quite short but my almost 7 year olds fit hit the air vents so those always end up closed, turning off air flow to the second row. I feel like we got a great deal on the car- and the saying is true.. you get what you pay for. We are again looking at vehicles now and will spend the money for a more reliable and functional vehicle.

This is my second Atlas. I generally loved this car for the space - it worked great for 3 young kids in car seats while also giving me opportunity to drive additional passengers around. However, I hate the technology. Everything is tough screen. EVERYTHING! And the sensors are too sensitive - sometimes. If I try to open my sunroof, the interior light goes on too. Also, there are so many glitches with the screen - sometimes it will turn off mid-drive. While it has awesome interior lighting, they didn’t light up the main volume and temperature control buttons, making it impossible to find them in the dark. I wanted to love this car fully, and I do for a lot of things, but the technology is subpar (which is ridiculous because it is the technology package!!).

We've loved our Atlas overall! It's spacious without feeling like driving a boat, and there is ample room in the 2nd and third row (I'm almost 6 feet tall and the third row is doable for occasional use if needed). My main criticism is it's been glitchy with the tech and Carplay, and no one has been able to fix it. When I plug in my phone to charge, the Carplay won't play any audio and I have to restart the whole infotainment system. It's annoying, not the end of the world but something I wish someone could fix.

I love the VW Atlas! It is the perfect family car. We have the SEL model which has all the upgrades and the interior is very high end and feels luxurious for a reasonable price point. As a new mom I love having the power tailgate, window shades, car seat tilt, and extra room for all the baby gear. It also drives very smooth and is great for road trips!

Not enough power. Not enough cup holders. The space in it is great. Fairly comfortable but not for an adult sitting in the back. It could have better shocks. I like all the extras that my car has.

I LOVE this car. Probably my favorite car I’ve owned. We had to get rid of it due to a coolant leakage but we really enjoyed this car. I would 100% get another Atlas but I would make sure it had a warranty and was new or certified pre owned. But the leg space in the second and third row is great and the trunk space cannot be beat!

I have never once regretted buying this car. I love it so so much. It makes me happy to this day almost 3 years later. It is a carseat machine and has been perfect for our family. We can fit 3 across perfectly leaving the third row down for more trunk space, which makes the trunk huge. I love that the trunk is flat so it makes for easy diaper changes, a changing room after swimming, etc, unlike mini vans who have the deep trunk which makes this really hard. We are expecting baby #4 soon so our setup will have to change but the third row comfort is great so I am not even worried. The middle row does not have ceiling vents but the airflow in the cabin works so fast that it hasn't been a problem for us, even in 100 degree heat even for my rear facing kids. The third row does have ceiling vents. There is also so much leg room in the 2nd and 3rd rows and the seats are all wide and comfortable. I love my heated seats and heated steering wheel and my power tailgate trunk. The only reason I gave technology a 4.5 stars is because occasionally the screen will go fuzzy when I first get in the car and I have to hold down the screen power button to reset it which can sometimes be a pain, and also because it can be kind of annoying to switch between phones connected for music while driving. Some of the stuff can only be done when stopped which can be a problem on roadtrips. However, overall it is great and I literally don't want any other car. When I do get a new car it will only be to get a full size SUV but I am just not there yet and not ready for that. We test drove the Kia Telluride and Ford Explorer as well before buying this car and as soon as we drove the atlas we knew we loved everything about it way more. 10/10 recommend to anyone with kids. Not to mention it was the car mom car of the year a couple years ago for a great reason!

Love my VW Atlas. My kids are a little older but the trunk space with the 3rd row down is AMAZING for hockey and Sam's/Costco runs. Even if my kids were a little younger I would still love how spacious the Atlas is.

I loved the look and performance of this car. It was just too small for my young family with four kids and constant need for a double stroller. It is a car that I see on the road now and think about driving one in the future when I’m not regularly driving my kids around. My husband drives a truck, so my car is the family car, and once car seats are installed there isn’t room for much extra for road trips or all of the sports equipment.

I love my Atlas so much! It’s been the perfect car for our family. It functions on the inside like a mini van with plenty of space (we have captains chairs) and is beautiful on the inside and outside. The tech has been a little glitchy but was recently improved with a hard reboot. Volkswagen service has been great with the minor issues I’ve had. I would recommend this car to any mom!

This baby is a carseat PRO. We have the captains chairs (which I do regret now that we have 3 kiddos) But no matter what configuration we need, carseats are easy to install and move around. A huge plus that you won't find in other mid-size 3 row SUVs.... the interior is SO SPACIOUS! So easy for kids and adults to move around. Love the tall ceiling height. And the spacious cabin means we have tons of room to store bags and suitcases as needed. And just look at this picture of our road trip with the third row up. Suitcases, scooters, golf clubs AND a foam roller?! She's a dream. Also, love the minimalist design. Just enough buttons without feeling overly busy on the dashboard.

I love the Atlas SEL. As a previous Tesla owner, I feel like the Technology is “dumb”. Apple car play always disconnects and it is annoying. Other than that, we love the space and the comfort in each of the three rows. We got captain chairs and it comfortably fits our two big car seats.

We have been loving our Atlas as a family of 5. We have the bench and sit three across with the back seat down for the most part. However, anytime we’ve had the backseat up, it’s very spacious for kids AND adults. Love the vents in the back, wish they were placed similarly in the second row. My only complaint with the Atlas is the squeaky brakes. As soon as the temperature drops, the brakes start to squeak when first using the car. I’ve been told this is because VW uses metal breaks and it takes a bit for them to grease up?! The paint on the front of my hood has also been chipping terribly. It is parked inside a garage when not in use, so I’m not sure what is causing this. The tech feels like just the right amount for me and overall, it’s been a wonderful fit for our family!

This is my second atlas! Had a 2019 purchased from dealership 6 months used as they used as shuttle vehicle, and loved it! I in an accident (was hit and the damage to other vehicle was extensive compared to mine), however it was a write off. Drove every 3 row vehicle on the market while searching for a new one, and came back to the Atlas again. Purchased brand new 2024. Easily fits our two boys, two dogs. The third row is great, as is trunk space with third row up. 10/10 would recommend!!

I love my atlas overall, with solid space for two kids in car seats and any stuff we need to bring! Me and my husband are on the taller end (5’9 and 6’0) and we have plenty of space in the front row with kids in the back, and plenty of trunk space for our needs. The screen in the front turns off and restarts sporadically so I’m not sure what that problem is about but it doesn’t bother me too. Water pump had to be replaced before 100,000 miles but overall we haven’t had any other major service issues.

The space is legit - bench seats allow for spacious and comfortable ride for passengers. The sunshades are clutch and the rear AC/Heat control is wonderful. My one main complaint is the driver/passenger cup holders. Not easy at all to get cups into it - you have to hit it at the proper angle or it's so difficult to get a fast food or even a normal size owala water bottle to fit. Seriously an annoying feature that you have to deal with every day!

This is my second Atlas. I previous drove a 2021 and loved it so much. It is so spacious, the second row bench is amazing if you plan to have anyone sit between two car seats. I don’t use the third row much but the trunk space is huge. I like the infotainment system on the 2021 better. This one is very odd, hard to see your favorite stations, particularly with satellite radio. I use Apple CarPlay a lot so it’s not a huge deal but if you’re a satellite radio person, this is very clunky. I wish it had ceiling vents but not a deal breaker for me. I love the remote start from my phone (I live in Arizona so it gets HOT and nice to start the car well before I get in it). Air conditioned seats are nice but it’s near impossible to actually feel a difference so don’t go into it thinking it’s going to actually cool your legs that much. Another negative of the infotainment system is that you have to click a couple things on the screen itself to adjust the temperature controls which is actually kind of scary while driving, I miss have an actual knob. Electronic shift is not my favorite (difficult at the end of a car wash!) but again, not a deal breaker. The size, look and drive of this car is what does it for me. Although they changed some things I don’t love, I still wouldn’t have changed my mind.

Best car I’ve ever owned! I spend a lot of time in my car and she’s incredibly spacious and comfortable. I came from a minivan- and I swear I have more space in the atlas! She’s a 3 across machine. I fit 3 Chicco seats - and they’re not the slim seats!

We bought this car for 3 kids 3 across originally but ended up with 4 kids in 5 years. Even with all 4 in car seats, it has held everyone plus groceries, stroller etc. Of all the midsized SUVs we looked at, it had the best trunk space with the third row in use. We typically have one of the middle row seats down and use that as a path to have 2 kids in the 3rd row and 2 in the middle row. We also own a Tiguan and it has the option to fold the center seat back and make a captain chairs style 2nd row. I wish the Atlas did that too!

This is my third Volkswagen Atlas, having previously leased a 2021 and a 2024 model, and I continue to love everything about this vehicle. It is spacious, comfortable, and offers a smooth ride. I currently have the SE with Technology trim and really appreciate all of the features it includes. As a mom, I especially value how easily it accommodates my two children and their friends. We are now past the car seat stage, but when my kids were younger, the Atlas comfortably fit two car seats with ease. My only suggestion would be to include a physical button or knob for the climate controls, as the touchscreen can sometimes be difficult to adjust while driving.

I bought this car in 2022 after Kelly the Car moms review. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about it. 3 kids at home during the time and it fit a family of 5 perfect. Love the captains chairs. All the tech. Never owned a brand new car before this one and still have it. 3rd row leg room is the best!

This is my second Atlas! The car is a great size for my family of 4. We have 2 in car seats, my husband is 6’4 and can fit well in the passenger seat with a rear facing child behind him. My previous 2019 Volkswagen was amazing which is why I bought another. I’ve had some tech issues with the 2025, overhead instrument cluster/sunroof issues and then apple car play issues but it is in warranty and have not had an issue getting them fixed. If you can maintain the car regularly it will be a great car for your family!

Great car for all 3 of my kids. we have been able to install and reinstall car seats with ease have tried so many different car seat set ups in the past 5 years going from 2-3 and now soon to be 4 kids! Love the car seat tilt and 3 across is tight but do able giving the trunk a lot of room wirh the 3rd row down. My kids can access the 3rd row easily for school pick up and drop off. Love my atlas it been a great purchase.

When Kelly •the car mom• raves about a car, you go check it out. We totaled our family car. We rented a mini van because that was really what we THOUGHT we wanted. It kept circling my mind how Kelly has always loved the Atlas. We found an incredible deal, a newer car, and fell in love with this car. And Wow, Kelly’s car buying course was incredibly helpful. Not only did I follow her tips, but it gave me the confidence to get a couple thousand dollars off the bottom line. So, buy the all of the courses she offers because they were worth the money ten fold. Coming from someone who used these tools yesterday! Thank you, Kelly and Lizz for all you do to make moms feel more confident in a space that has traditionally intimidated women and moms. -signed: a car mom fan for life

2024 Atlas Peak Edition. Has rugged exterior style. Interior is comfortable and functional. Performance is okay. Some times lagging at quick get up and goes, the auto stop in my opinion is potentially the issue. Easy to get to highway speeds. Wish motor was bigger but acceptable for most families I'm sure. Have had one major issue in the spring, it blew a electrical fuse and wrecked the coolant pump and radiator fan. Spent the week in the shop. Thankfully we live in a cold climate and I was able to drive to the dealership about 110 miles away. Be aware that sensors for parking get chipped and throw codes easily, replacement was about $500 at dealership. My husband was able to buy the replacement for about $100 and replaced it in 30 minutes.

Amazing interior set up for our family. Second row is spacious with two rear facing car seats and with the bench seat I can hop in the middle when needed on long road trips. The value was also a big driver in our choice to buy this car...my top pick was the Toyota Highlander but this fit our budget better. The MAJOR drawback with this car is the tech/screen. It glitches and goes out and there doesn't seem to be a fix - which is disappointing. We have also had 2 repairs needed that were covered under warranty but still a little concerning. Leak on the driver's side front from the sunroom into the cabin of the vehicle (we are talking we were getting dripped on with water in the rain - it was coming in nowhere near the actual sunroof) and also the fake leather seat material wore out in less than a year and we had to have it replaced already. It cracked and became awful looking. Overall though the car has been good for us and VERY comfortable for our weekend AND road trip adventures.

No complaints about fitting my fam of 5 and our large dog! We have captains chairs to let the dog have easy access to the back. The car is super comfortable and even with the third row always up we have space in the trunk for our double stroller. We have a Thule for longer drives. The only bad thing is the technology glitches. The screen will randomly shut off and need to be rebooted, the Apple CarPlay is not super reliable, and the interior lights randomly flash. None of them are that often so it’s not that huge of a deal, but definitely enough to mention!

I absolutely love my Volkswagen Atlas! I ended up in one somewhat unexpectedly after totaling my Expedition Max. I didn’t necessarily have to downsize, but with my kids getting a little older, I decided I didn’t need quite as much vehicle anymore — and I’m so glad I chose the Atlas. We’ve been really impressed with how roomy and comfortable it is. We’ve actually had all seven seats filled multiple times, including THREE car seats, and everyone still fit comfortably! For something smaller than the Expedition Max, I really don’t feel like I sacrificed nearly as much space as I expected. It drives great, has plenty of room for our family, and has been such a good fit for us. We’ve really loved it so far and I would absolutely recommend the Atlas to another family looking for a spacious three-row SUV without going quite as big as a full-size SUV!

Knowing we were going to be looking for a mid-sized SUV, I'm so glad I found the Car Mom. I felt so knowledgeable going into the dealership and what I was looking for, for our family car. At the time we were looking, there was the chip shortage, so supply was limited. The Atlas definitely hit most-all of the boxes. It is reliable, functional, and roomy. The 3rd row access was something to consider, due to my aging parents. They're able to go on roadtrips with us and 3 carseats and fit luggage in the back! It is my daily driver, but my husband insists on driving whenever he gets a chance (and it's not because of my driving). He even got his own Volkswagen based on our experience with the Atlas. We have been really happy, overall!

As a mom of 3 older kids this vehicle has been great for our family. I have 2 kids that play hockey and we are able to fit all their equipment in the trunk area with the third row down with no issues. And all 3 kids can still fit in the middle row bench seat comfortably with plenty of leg room. My main issue with this vehicle is that as soon as I bought it I had issues with the fuel injectors. I got it fixed and about a year later had to get it fixed again. Also, the brakes squeak every time I drive it after it’s been sitting over night. I brought that up to my service advisor after purchasing it and I was told that’s just what they do and there’s no fix for it. Another unresolved issue is sometimes when breaking you can feel it down shift pretty hard. A mechanic drove it and felt it as well but said there was nothing they could do about it. So, definitely some frustrating mechanical issues that I’ve had to deal with but overall we like the size and comfortability of the vehicle.

The Atlas is the mot stylish and beautiful of all 3rd row SUV’s. The interior comfort and size is phenomenal. There are 2 things lacking. One is the glitchy technology that rarely works right and is not reliable. The other is how sluggish the engine is. Overall I’ve been happy with this due to the comfort and size.

I’ve owned my 2024 VW Atlas SE since April 2024, and overall I’d give it about 4.5/5 stars. I absolutely love it as a family vehicle. My favorite thing is the space. The second row has SO much legroom, which is perfect for car seats, diaper bags, or adults who actually want to be comfortable. I also love the massive trunk space with the third row folded down. Having a bench seat has been a huge plus for our family because I’ve been able to configure our kids’ car seats in so many different ways, including having one in the middle and one outboard. Kelly from The Car Mom definitely convinced me on the bench, and I’m glad she did! 😂 It’s also the perfect size for our family. With two kids, we still have plenty of room to bring friends, cousins, or family along, and there’s room to grow if we ever need it. It drives smooth, has plenty of power with the turbo, and I typically get around 24–28 mpg on the highway, which I’m really happy with for an SUV this size. It’s been very reliable for us with very few recalls and nothing major. I love the technology and safety features, although I really wish it had a 360° camera and auto hold. My biggest complaints are that I wish VW offered a hybrid option and that there were ceiling vents for the second row. Overall, I would absolutely buy another Atlas. In fact, I’m probably waiting for VW to add a hybrid before I buy my next one. 😂 For a mom with 2–3 kids, especially if you plan to keep the kids in the second row while they’re little but still want the flexibility of a third row as they get bigger, I think the Atlas is a fantastic family SUV.

I got nervous to purchase a VW Atlas after reading reviews but I've had my car for 3 years and over 65k miles and zero issues. She's so comfy, roomy, and fun. Great for 3 across carseats with a bench and love that I can put one kid in the 3rd row comfortably if I don't want kids annoying each other. Not too girly or mom-ish that my husband doesn't want to drive. 10/10.

It is a great car for a bigger family and carpooling. I regularly have 5 kids in the back and it work great. My kids are no longer in car seats, but when they were it was so easy to do 3 across. We have loved this car. The only negative is the technology. The main screen often glitches, and apple car play is hit or miss. I'd keep this car forever if the technology were better

When Kelly says the VW Atlas is a car-seat machine, she is not kidding!!! We fit our 3 kids (at one time all rear-facing) no problem, and have fit 5 car seats (with my niece and nephew) no problem; which is no easy feat especially in a mid-size vehicle! We have so much flexibility with my 4 and 5yo FF and 7yo in a high-back booster now. Sometimes we do 3 across the bench, sometimes we split them up. The tech and amenities are amazing for a vehicle that is 8 years old. We have had to do a few repairs beyond maintenance, but nothing overly expensive or too unexpected. The car is not the best performance driver for highway, but it is large and I feel it drives well for such a large vehicle. We truly believe when this vehicle reaches end of life, we will replace it with a new VW Atlas because we love it so much.

We rented this car earlier this year. It fit 2 car seats in the 2nd row with room for me to sit in between them, when needed. It drove great, even on rough dirt roads and pretty steep hills. It has an off-road mode that made it similar to "tow haul" that made driving it a breeze in the hills. The tech was a bit frustrating at times, not always connecting to our phones easily, etc. Part of the frustration could have been we just weren't used to using it all of the time too. We folded the 3rd row down and had plenty of luggage space and room for a stroller. I would definitely consider this car if I was ever in the mid-sized market!

The Atlas has been great for our family from a car seat setup perspective. When we got the car we had 3 kids in forward facing car seats and they fit nicely 3 across with the bench seat in the 2nd row. Now we have 2 booster seats and one car seat and the bench seat still works pretty well. There are some struggles getting seatbelts buckled with the 2 booster seats next to eachother but it’s workable. The 3rd row is actually fairly comfortable especially since you can move the 2nd row seats forward. The trunk space is great with the 3rd row down and adequate with the 3rd row up. We wish there were ceiling vents in the 2nd and 3rd rows. We have had some issues with the infotainment screen being glitchy and the apple car plat does not always work perfectly. We are coming to the end of our 3 year lease and it seems like everything is starting to work less well as we approach the 3 year mark. The air conditioning isn’t getting cold, the gear shifting is sometimes glitchy, the screen is resetting mid-drive. So I would say it’s a good car to lease but not necessarily buy.

We have the bench in the 2nd row and I love that I can sit between my kids carseats when needed. (They should add a cuphold in the back of the console for middle seat riders.) It's hard to climb through but worth it when needed. For long trips I've easily moved rear facing carseat to middle so I can sit in the larger middle seat. We rarely have used the 3rd row but love having the large truck space. Easily fits all luggage during road trips including pack & plays, strollers, etc.

I’ve had this car for two years. I really like the way it looks, but unfortunately, that’s probably my favorite thing about it. The technology has been frustrating. There are almost no physical buttons, so even simple things like turning on the A/C require going through the touchscreen to find the right setting. The technology also doesn’t always work properly. For example, sometimes when I try to roll a window up, it goes back down instead. The key fob is also unreliable and doesn’t always lock or unlock the car when I press the button. I’m also not a big fan of the way it drives. After two years, I still haven’t gotten to the point where I really enjoy driving it. I wanted to love this car, especially because I love the way it looks. But after two years, the technology issues and driving experience have made it hard to recommend. I really wish I liked it more than I do.

The second row is amazing. So much space. Currently have 1 rear facing and 1 forward facing car seat. Trunk space is so big! Can carry my husband golf clubs, weekend bags for entire family, and stroller without issue! Front row has good cup holders and is a comfortable ride.

Tons of space for 2 kids. Super comfortable. Not over kill with technology although my infotainment system does glitch from time to time, but I did know this was an issue! Plenty of trunk space! I absolutely love this vehicle! Plenty of room if I have my niece and/or nephew!

I have absolutely loved my Atlas. She is just shy of the 100,000 mile mark. We have had no issues with her. We make regular trips with 6-7 people and she’s great! We do a luggage rack on the back if needed but she honestly fits everything great. We have a hockey player, a band kid (with a large instrument) and a soccer kid and never struggled with space. I have enjoyed this car from day one.

My test drive thoughts: I hated the climate control slides. I accidentally turned the vents up and couldn't turn them back down. It's a little thing, but it's ultimately what caused me to move on. I also felt like I was driving a bus. I do not know why the Atlas felt so big, but I drove it twice and both times I felt like I was wider and longer than I expected. I was looking forward to the Atlas and really thought it was going to be my car, but we ended up with a Honda Pilot instead.

The VW Atlas has been a very reliable and practical car for our family. We have two kids and I have the bench seat, so I keep the third row down most of the time. This gives us plenty of cargo space and works extremely well for our everyday needs. I do occasionally use the third row for passengers, and it is so nice to have that option when grandparents are riding with us. The technology is nothing extraordinary, but I mostly use Apple CarPlay, which works perfectly for me. My only real wish is that it had ceiling vents, especially living in South Texas. That said, using remote start through the app cools the car down well enough that my rear facing child is comfortable. Overall, the Atlas has been reliable, spacious, and a really great fit for our family.

Super comfortable and what sold it for us was that it was the lowest priced car with the space and features we wanted! VW was also running 0% financing at the time which is a DREAM!
