The Exterior

Exterior: Still Ahead of Its Time

The XC90 received a full redesign in 2016 and a refresh in 2020 — and honestly? It still looks brand new.

It’s elegant. It’s refined. It’s uniquely Volvo.

  • Concave vertical grille with the iconic Volvo badge
  • Signature LED headlights (the “Thor’s Hammer” look 👏)
  • 20-inch two-tone wheels (on this Inscription trim)
  • Stunning full LED rear taillights
  • Clean chrome detailing throughout
No items found.

First Row

The design is minimalist but luxurious. Exposed wood trim, glossy chrome accents, high-gloss black buttons — everything feels intentional.

One of my favorite tiny details? The Swedish flag tag on the seat and the “Since 1959” seat belt detailing (a nod to Volvo pioneering the three-point seatbelt). Those touches make the car feel special.

Tech & Infotainment

The vertical touchscreen was ahead of its time when it debuted. It’s very Tesla-like and user-friendly overall.

My only complaint? Climate controls are fully integrated into the screen. While it’s clean aesthetically, I do wish physical climate buttons were left out for easier adjustments while driving.

‍

Second Row

Second Row: Let’s Talk Car Seats

Here’s where things get exciting.

The second row bench is surprisingly flexible and clearly designed with families in mind:

  • All seats slide independently
  • Available built-in booster seat (YES PLEASE)
  • Lower anchors on the outboard seats
  • Three top tether anchors

That built-in booster should honestly be standard in every family SUV. It’s such a smart feature for booster-aged kids.

The Reality Check

If you are a tall driver (I’m about 6 feet), and you’re planning to use rear-facing car seats — bring your car seat to the dealership.

It works. But it’s a little tight.

The door opening also doesn’t swing super wide, which can make lifting a heavier infant seat in and out more challenging over time.

Bottom line: It’s doable, but test it first.

‍

Third Row

Third Row: Functional, But Not Effortless

The XC90 is a true seven-seater (or six with captain’s chairs), but accessing the third row isn’t my favorite setup.

  • Manual levers (no power folding)
  • Two separate levers that do different things
  • Not the widest opening for kids to climb through

Once back there, it’s actually more comfortable than I expected. You get:

  • Side vents
  • Cup holders
  • Extra cubbies

However, there are no USB ports in the third row, which feels like a miss in a luxury vehicle.

No items found.

Trunk

Trunk Space & The Stroller Test

With the third row up, the trunk is decent for groceries and everyday errands.

But let’s talk stroller test.

I fit my UPPAbaby Vista back there… but not easily.

When you’ve got two tired kids and you’re trying to load up quickly, “technically fits” isn’t always enough. It passes the test — but it’s tight.

With the third row down? Much better. Plenty of cargo room for real-life mom life.

Safety

The 2021 Volvo XC90 continues Volvo's long-standing reputation for prioritizing safety. It has earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick+, the highest award, and also received a 5-Star overall rating from NHTSA. It has strong crash protection and crash avoidance performance. The XC90 also stands out by offering seat belt pretensioners in every seating position--a rarity and an important safety feature. Pretensioners remove slack from the seat belt in the nanoseconds before a crash, dramatically reducing injury in frontal and near-frontal collisions. This feature has been standard in front seats for nearly two decades, but not in most back seats. While this doesn’t affect children in harnessed car seats, it does affect other passengers. I applaud Volvo's dedication to safety by adding these in every seating position!

Other standard safety features include:

  • Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) with crash avoidance, or severity reduction, for vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and even animals
  • Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with steering assist
  • Lane Keeping Aid and Oncoming Lane Mitigation
  • Run-Off Road Mitigation
  • Cross Traffic Alert with Auto Brake

‍

Car Seat Setup

Built-In Booster: A Standout Feature

One of the most unique (and genuinely useful) features of the XC90 is the optional built-in booster seat in the second-row center position.

The seat folds up and out to create a safe, integrated booster that’s incredibly convenient for everyday use. I highly recommend this option for families—it makes three-across and adjacent installations much easier, and it improves buckle access since kids don’t have to reach around bulky booster armrests.

LATCH & Third-Row Considerations

Lower anchors are only available in the second-row outboard seats, with no lower anchors in the third row.

The third row itself sits slightly higher, which can make it less comfortable for larger passengers or kids in certain boosters. If you’re using the third row for a child, opt for a low-profile booster to avoid sacrificing headroom.

Head Restraints & Car Seat Compatibility

All head restraints in the XC90 are forward-angled and non-removable.

This isn’t an issue for rear-facing seats, but it can create challenges for forward-facing car seats and boosters. That said, several seats tend to work well with this setup:

  • Convertible & All-in-One Seats: Nuna Rava, Nuna Exec, Clek Foonf, Clek Fllo, Graco SlimFit3 LX
  • Boosters: Peg Perego Viaggio Flex 120, Nuna Aace, Evenflo GoTime

Most of these—especially the Clek and Graco options—also work well for three-across setups in this vehicle.

Accessing the Third Row

If you need third-row access with a car seat installed in the second-row center, you’ll need an extremely narrow seat.

The Clek and Graco models mentioned above are strong options, along with the Nuna Exec. And of course, the built-in booster is ideal here since it eliminates bulk altogether.

Space & Fit Notes

Both the second and third rows have some limitations when it comes to space:

  • Bulky car seats don’t fit well in either row
  • Most rear-facing seats will not work in the third row
  • For taller passengers, look for more compact options like the Nuna Rava, Nuna Exec, or Graco Extend2Fit 3-in-1

Rotating car seats tend to be bulkier, but a few more compact options—like the Cybex Callisto G 360 and Britax Galaxy—can work for some families in both rear- and forward-facing modes.

I LOVE this car so much. The plugin hybrid is top tier! The car feels luxurious without being overly complicated. The built in booster seat is SO clutch! My only complaint specific to the car is the infotainment system sucks and their Google Gemini update made it even worse, if Volvo can up their tech they’ll win it all. My other complaint that is not the car’s fault at all but this is not a car for a 3 kid family. I think it’d be great if you had 1-2 kids but 3 is pushing it. I constantly feel like we’ve outgrown it. Thankfully this was the reason I leased it.

The Volvo XC90 is awesome for a family of 5. The integrated booster is a non-negotiable for me from now on- it’s the best thing since sliced bread. The interior space is great; between everything our toddler twins require to leave the house and bags for a family vacation, we need a lot of storage space in our cars! Don’t judge me but the crystal gear changer is so extra and I love it. The new infotainment screen in the 2026 model was a nice upgrade- the bigger size and the Google Maps integration were highlights. But the system now lags after a Gemini upgrade so I took some points away for that. It also doesn’t have the greatest cup holders or center console, which are small but mighty downsides. All said, I absolutely love this car (it’s my third XC90) and wouldn’t trade it for anything!

I love this car for its drafty futures. This is my 3rd Volvo. First one was 2020 xc90 which was totaled when a drunk driver came out of nowhere at 75mph smashing into the back of it while I was stopped at a red light. Volvo made sure the car gets shipped back to Sweden for testing after the accident. It’s a very comfortable vehicle, smooth drive and the suspension makes the 3rd row comfortable. I wish Volvo made a bigger SUV. For our family and yearly roadtrips it’s always a tight squeeze. Having one child in a car seat, two others without and all of our luggage can get a bit tight. One important factor is for parents with rear facing convertible car seats. Nuna Rava is probably your best option. I’m short 5’1, and it was uncomfortable with rear facing car seats until we found the Rava. I was unable to have my seat at a comfortable position. My husband 6’2 was also struggling but Rava made it comfortable for everyone.

We had twins this summer and as such went from being a family of 3 to a family of 5. We also own an XC40 and love it but it isn’t big enough for us all to fit in it together (our oldest is still RF). While we initially thought the 90 wouldn’t be compatible with our needs due to it being tricky with car seat options, it ended up being what we went with because we live in an Urban area and some of the other midsize SUV’s were just too big for our driveway/parking situation. We opted for a bench in order to do 3 across and so far we are very happy with that decision. The bench is snug but doable. We are loving how spacious the trunk is with the 3rd row down. I’m still getting used to the updated infotainment. So far I really like some of the upgrades like easier accessibility of the camera from the Home Screen, updated 360 cam view, and integration of the maps into dashboard. Things I’m still getting used to include the fact that the start/stop has to be shut off every drive (in our 2022 xc40 this setting is saved between drives), and the climate controls (somehow they feel less intuitive even though there are updated graphics?).

I absolutely love my 2022 Volvo XC90! The brown interior is beautiful and gives it such a luxurious feel, while the three rows make it perfect for our family. In my opinion, it’s one of the safest vehicles on the road, which was incredibly important to me. One of my favorite features is the built-in booster seat in the second row—it’s perfect for my 8-year-old and makes life so much easier. The third row is also surprisingly spacious and comfortable enough for adults, which isn’t always the case with three-row SUVs. It’s comfortable, beautiful, practical, and makes me feel confident driving my family around. My only complaint is the lack of Apple CarPlay in mine. If it had that, it would honestly check every single box for me. Overall, I absolutely love my XC90 and would recommend it to any family looking for a safe, stylish, and truly functional three-row SUV.

Really love my XC90 for two kids, just wish I had gotten bench instead of captains. Got captains bc w 2 car seats, I thought that’d be the only way to access the third row. However, we never use the third row (3 times in 2 years) and the trunk is so small with the third row up that we always have it folded down. With the captains seats, the middle aisle becomes an abyss where everything falls and it’s so hard to get too (plus feels unsafe with potential projectiles in the trunk and nothing blocking them from sliding down the middle). We’re pregnant with third and debating trading it in for same car with a bench to do 3 across, or upgrading to full size SUV. I can’t stress how much I truly love this car- it’s great to drive and a perfect size. Sporty, understated luxury and I love the tech (although loved it more before the last update). Very comfortable and family friendly. A bit tight for rear facing car seats if you’re a tall driver.

Love this car! It is very simple as far as design (classic) and has had minimal to no issues. Third row accessibility is hard and comfort level of third row is low, but I’m able to have 3 across in second row with no issues and feel very safe driving the car. Would recommend for 3 kids or under if you don’t need a lot of access to third row or will not be using car for carpooling.

I upgraded from XC60 to XC90 when we added a second baby. I love the extra space! We opted for captains chairs, and typically keep the third row flat for storage. The seats are very comfortable and I love the safety standards of Volvo.

I LOVE my Volvo XC90! I purchased this car pre-owned after dreaming about it for years. I love the sporty, luxury look of the car, and I love the front grill on the newer models. I have the B5 engine with a bench seat in the middle. We keep the 3rd row down and it has such a spacious trunk. I can fit our Graco wagon, my son’s golf clubs, and a load of groceries back there! I wanted the option of having a third row for additional passengers when needed, but what really sold me on this vehicle is the built in booster in the middle row- this will be so handy to have if we need to give a ride to one of my child’s friends after school, practice, etc. The only downside to this vehicle is the lack of door cupholder space (I can’t really fit anything well in the side compartment) and there are no built in sunshades in the second row (for a luxury vehicle I would have liked that- my old Explorer had built in sunshades and great side compartment cup holders) but I can get over that because the rest of the vehicle functions beautifully. The tech in this car is better than in any vehicle I’ve ever owned.

When I first started my car mom journey, my head was set on the Lexus TX. I decided to check out Volvo and fell in love with the XC90. The 2025.5 was just released and was so beautiful from the crystal gear shift to the captain chairs I was in awe. I still went to see the TX and was completely underwhelmed. I couldn’t believe how quickly I changed my mind. Most importantly, safety came to mind and I knew Volvo was the car for me. It’s perfect for my family of 4 with room to spare whenever we have family or friends join us. I get to work usually an hour early and get to relax and watch a show on the large screen. It is a super smooth ride and partially hybrid which is great for city driving. My only con is that the AC is a little weird and stops while I’m at a light. Even after a year and a half I can’t believe I get to call this amazing car mine.

This is the ultimate mom car! My heart was set on the Lexus TX for 2 years. When it finally came down to get my very own car, I couldn’t wait to get the TX. Volvo just released the XC90 2025.5 and when I sat in it I instantly fell in love. From the crystal gear shift to the captain chairs and everything in between I was super underwhelmed with the TX when I went to go look at it. The denim blue exterior with the soft beige interior is an esthetically pleasing dream. The large screen is great when I get to work an hour early and can catch up on a show I normally can’t watch at home with my kids. She drives super smooth and is part hybrid which is great for city driving. My kids have their own space & still have room for extra family when needed. I love love this car and most importantly how safe it is, I knew once I was in it Volvo was the right choice because nothing is more important than safety!

I love this car and didn’t want to give it up when I got pregnant with a third. Unfortunately, the third row does not have tether hooks. Thankfully the second row can fit three car seats across, even with the doona as one of the three. I do wish the back door opened wider bc it is hard to get the doona in and out with the fixed door opening.

With 2 kids this car is great! We can pop up the 3rd row when we are carpooling, but mostly keep it down for the trunk space. The car drives great and I feel good knowing the safety is top of the line. I would say if you’re taller it may not be the best, at 5’ 7 it’s good for me but it’s not as spacious inside as some other cars I have ridden in.

Volvo XC90 was the perfect first time mom (luxury) car! The look is very sleek, luxurious and modern. Mine was Denim Blue on Blonde interior and it is one of the best looking color combinations across any car I've seen to date. The front row was comfortable yet still a bit sporty. The touchscreen was very large and user friendly. During my ownership, I had 2 children in the second row - I used a Nuna PIPA RX and a RF Nuna RAVA. There was plenty of room to fit them in the outboard seats. I could sit between them, if needed, although tight. The third row is not really practical for car seats. With the third row down, the trunk space was amazing. I felt very safe driving my children around as well. The XC90 started to feel snug once we had two RF Nuna RAVAs so, I ultimately got a larger full-size SUV. We planned to have more children in the near future so upsizing made sense.

I’ll start by saying we had a very rocky start with our Volvo XC90, but we now genuinely love it. Starting with the good: this car is perfect for our current stage of life with two kids, ages 7 and 10. We opted for the second-row bench with the integrated booster seat, and it’s hands-down one of my favorite features. We always have an extra booster ready when we carpool—such a brilliant feature that I’m surprised more vehicles don’t offer it! The third row is also perfect for our kids right now, although I think our years of comfortably using it are limited. It’s tight and probably not ideal for teens or larger passengers. Now for our rocky start. Shortly after bringing home our brand-new XC90, we noticed a strange smell from the engine. We opened the hood and discovered rust and oxidation throughout the engine compartment—very concerning for a brand-new vehicle. Unfortunately, neither the dealership nor Volvo offered much of a resolution beyond attempting to clean it off. That was followed by check-engine lights and numerous technology issues. Within the first four weeks, our brand-new car needed a new starter AND an entirely new touchscreen. We came inches away from pursuing it as a lemon, and part of me still wishes we had made it to the finish line so we could have started over with a clean slate. Thankfully, since those early repairs, the XC90 has been running fairly smoothly, a few glitches here and there, and we’ve grown to really love it. It’s comfortable, beautiful, safe and incredibly functional for our family. I just wish our experience with a brand-new luxury vehicle—and Volvo’s response when things went wrong—had started on a much better note. Volvo if you are reading this, do better!

Obsessed with this car and successfully have 3 car seats across in the 2nd row (2 FF, 1 infant seat)! Drives really well and has been very reliable. Hate that the screen is touch and houses temp and media controls - wish the car had more buttons! Wireless charger really doesn't fit my iPhone very well and there could be more cupholders. Other than that, really happy with the xc90 as a family vehicle!

I love this car, especially for a family with two kids. I keep the third row folded down most of the time, which gives us an incredible amount of cargo space while still having plenty of room for everyone. I have the second-row bench seat with the built-in booster, and it’s one of my favorite features. It makes it so easy when we’re driving extra kids around—no need to keep an additional booster seat in the car. I also love that Volvo hasn’t dramatically changed the exterior styling over the years, so the car continues to feel current rather than dated. The interior has a minimalist, understated luxury that feels both comfortable and polished. And speaking of comfort, people are constantly commenting on how comfortable the seats are! I think this is an ideal car for a family with two kids who doesn’t need to use the third row every day but wants the option when needed and loves having lots of trunk space. It strikes such a great balance of space, style, and comfort.

Love the car. Comfortable, the trunk space is great. I do wish the interior got more of a change. As I had the 2023 Volvo xc60. It did get a slight upgrade but nothing really different. I love the booster seat in the middle when taking other kids with me!

I absolutely love the safety features AND the plug-in hybrid fuel economy of this car! My T8 regularly averages 37 miles of electric range around town so I can go months without refueling. The interior is beautiful and luxe in a minimalist way. The infotainment system is pretty intuitive and easy to use, especially with apps such as Google Maps and Spotify built into the car’s system. Even though I don’t use Alexa or Google Home at home I regularly use Hey Google to set the temp or change the fan speed since they are obnoxiously hidden in the screen. Size wise - I traded in a VW Atlas Cross Sport and sometimes have regrets based solely on the legroom! My very tall 4.5 yr old is in a Nuna Exec behind the passenger. The passenger either has to be close to the dash, uncomfortable especially if my 6’ 3” husband is sitting there, or my daughter tends to kick the seat in front of her. The third row is ok for old kids who are out of boosters and very small adults but averaged sized or larger sized adults will find it uncomfortable for anything longer than a short car ride. To make up for the lack of ceiling vents due to a panoramic sunroof there are two higher side vents in the second and third row that do ventilate well, in my opinion. The inability easily find forward facing car seats that can be installed properly is also a possible red flag for potential families. Overall, I like this car a lot but it is definitely not the perfect one for tall families with small children.

The Volvo XC90 Plug-in Hybrid is a an excellent, luxurious car. The details on the Ultimate Edition are impeccable. Everyone who gets in the car comments on the beautiful details. The B&W sound system is remarkably good and makes driving a joy. The seats are so comfortable. You can enjoy them as they are or elevate the experience with heat or ventilated cooling. The drive is phenomenal and such a smooth ride. The hybrid has been a money saving dream. Almost all my daily errand are accomplished with an overnight charge! While I love the car, there are some drawbacks. This isn’t exactly what I had hoped for in a family car. I knew I was downsizing from my Honda Odyssey, but expected more from the space in the XC90. The back seat is truly an occasional use space. My oldest is an adult now, but we still do things as a family and she is definitely cramped in the back. The bigger challenge is definitely getting into the back. The system for folding the second row forward is not great, at least not in my CPO car. Be sure to test that out in any XC90 you are test driving. The capacity of the second row is fine, but not exceptional. For a family car with two teen boys, it is definitely a compromise I feel like I have made to upgrade my driving experience and I debate about whether that’s been worth it. There have been a few other buggy things that I am dealing with. I do think it is a great car, and I am overall pleased. Quick note, I don’t recommend a black car with a black interior if you hope to keep a car looking crisp and clean most of the time. I haven’t ever had the combo before, but I wouldn’t choose it again. The car gets hot fast. And it is hard to find a good way to clean it to make it look great. I miss my silver car with a grey interior many days of the week!

This is my third Volvo XC 90 that I have owned. And this is the best one yet. I love the hybrid. Let’s be honest on most days. I drive within a 5 mile radius and not having to use. Gas has been wonderful. My waffle has always been super comfortable. I love the technology and above all I love the safety.

This is a great car for 2 kids. Would also be good for 3 older kids. We love the built in booster in our model especially for carpool situations, we always have an extra booster in the back so can drive multiple kids without much planning if needed. It drives very well and the new computer system feels improved from our last version. Mostly love the safety features and feel so safe in it always!

I switched to the XC90 because I wanted a very safe SUV that was good in the snow and I could do 3 across for car seats. It has been a great car but now that my kids are a little older, we need more room to spread out so I’ll be trading it in for a larger vehicle

This car feels like a tank, I feel so safe and secure especially in the snow with decent tires. I have just hit 100,000 miles and she’s going strong, I’ve done breaks and every 10K oil changes. Super reliable, the apple carplay is finicky, the Third row is decent and I have the 6 seater so captains chairs in the middle row. Even with all seats up, I have a decent trunk space for groceries but need a seat down to fit strollers or diaper boxes. I love the interior styling but some of the vent covers have broken off and seem cheaply attached. The leather is sooo nice and has held up well, my favorite leather and held up better than a previous Audi. Mpg is 20.6 and mostly town miles. I feel comfortable at 90 and have the T6 engine for some extra pickmeup My husband is 6’ and finds the passenger seat to be small.

Let me start by saying, I do love my Volvo! I feel incredibly safe in it. It’s a very smooth ride- it’s fast - which I do like! It’s very comfortable. The things I don’t love our: The cup holders in the front - the center console it’s all just small - not a lot of places to put things. The third row is small and I try to avoid using it at all costs! I will take pictures of it tomorrow in the day light :)

I have loved my XC90. When we bought my oldest was almost 2 and I was pregnant with our second. It has grown with us as our girls have shifted from baby/toddler to full blown kids (they’re 7 and 5 now). I’d recommend this car to a 2 kid family, I think it would be very tight with a larger family. Overall I love my car and would highly recommend.

I love this car and plan to purchase it when my lease ends or a barely used one then. It is very safe and a bonus that it looks good and drives so smooth. I wouldn’t change a thing but if I was forced to pick something to change, I would get rid of the tablet for technology and turn it into one large screen that runs from the middle of the front of the car and goes entirely through the driver’s dashboard, as some other luxury cars have

Bench seating makes this car tight at carpool with 2 kids - one booster and one car seat. Kids can’t easily climb across to enter and exit with book bags etc. Their feet have also been closed in the door before because of how tight the spacing is in the back. It’s a safe car though. Greatly dislike the automatic intervention- has almost caused 2 car wrecks.

GREAT mid-to-upper tier mom car. I got my Volvo in 2021 and have loved driving it. It’s large enough to fit all of your gear for sports or long road trips, but is easy to maneuver and park. It worked well to have two backwards facing car seats and I could sit in the middle, although it can sometimes get a little squished for tall drivers. I love all the safety features it came with and feel so comfortable and protected driving around. It has great styling, although not super luxurious like a Mercedes or BMW, more clean sophistication but fits in to areas prone to more luxury cars with easy and is a much more affordable and higher quality option with all the features it contains. I may buyer another one!

I LOVE my car— I love Volvo in general. This is my third Volvo lease in 8 years. I started with the 40. Had a baby and moved to the 60. Had another baby and moved to the 90. However, with a third baby coming in a month, I’m finding it very hard to accommodate my growing family. My one daughter (3) sits forward facing, my other daughter (1.5) sits rear facing and I will have an infant seat as well all in the second row bench. For my 3 year old to get to her seat in the middle, she must crawl on the floor. In my current 2026 model, there are tether anchors in the 3rd row; however in the newer models, they got rid of these tether anchors eliminating the option to move her to the third row while keeping the bench! I would say wonderful car for 2 car seats, but very inconvenient for 3!

I love this car and bought it to keep for hopefully 10 years as our family grows. My daughter is 1.5 years old and we have used the UppaBaby Aria carseat and now the Cybex Callisto 360 in the second row passenger seat. The front passenger seat is still in a comfortable position for someone who is 5'9. The third row has decent space for an adult. The trunk space is great, especially with the third row folded down, I can easily fit the UppaBaby Vista stroller on just one side and still have half the trunk available. It also fits the Wonderfold W2 wagon nicely. The car drives great, feels sturdy and safe, and overall I would recommend it. My only hand up is the technology, a lot of glitches with the app and with Apple Carplay, the dealership told me that's just how it is with Volvos unfortunately.

I actually own a 2020 (but that wasn't an option on the dropdown) and I love it! Still own it, paid off and service regularly at the dealership (don't come after me). The size is perfect for my family of 4 with plenty of room and configuration options for carrying more people, pets or things. I love the built-in booster and how each seat can fold independently (no being stuck with 60/40). Would definitely recommend and will likely get another one when its time to upgrade.

We have our three kids all in the second row! Our 8 year old uses the built in booster in the middle seat. The 6 year old uses a high back booster and our infant seat is behind the passenger seat with a decent amount of room.

I actually really love this car, it’s comfortable and zippy but after coming from a Tahoe is doesn’t seem big enough for a family and two kids in sports. The fact that it doesn’t have wireless apple car play is a bummer, and the infotainment system isn’t super intuitive in my opinion. It’s a great car otherwise, and I feel super safe :)

This was a great car! The infotainment was sometimes glitchy but other than that I had no issues with it. The perfect in between of a 2 row and 3 row car. Handled so well and so much better than my previous car (2021 VW Atlas). The B6 engine is worth the upgrade.

I LOVE the XC90. It’s been so great for 2 babies. We personally love the captain seats. It allowed for extra room for our large dog and extra trunk space when the third row seats are down. Only 2 big complaints: 2nd row air vents don’t reach backwards facing car seats. Also the touch screen interface is very laggy

I love this car. It is my second XC90. I only have 2 kids and they’re out of car seats, but I feel like it’s the perfect cross between a 2 row car and a 3 row car. I have the 3rd row when needed but mostly keep it down. It handles and drives so well - the larger engine is worth it. I don’t care about having the latest and greatest of tech in the car. Handling and performance are more important to me and I have no complaints!

Biggest let down IMO. The car drives well, I have water leaking through the sun roof, which is a common issue with these cars, gotten it fixed but still annoyed to know it will probably happen again. The biggest disappointment is the third row. No car seats can go back there, and once that row is up the trunk space is pretty much all gone. I have two kids and honestly feel really tight in the car. I always held Volvo as this great performing, reliable mom car- but I’m honestly so disappointed, bored, and ready to let it go. If you’re looking for a good SUV with decent trunk space and comfortable third row, keep looking because this one is not it!

Excellent mom vehicle, great space in the second and third row. Trunk space with third row is big compared to others brands. Best choice if you’re looking for a third row SUV, with good space while conserving your gas.

Pros: Beautifully designed car, impressive technology and seamless infotainment. High-quality service with the dealership for oil changes and other maintenance (they would come pick up the vehicle and leave a loaner). Cons: Couldn't fit rear-facing car seat behind tall driver (6'7"). Third row leg room was tight for a tween. Overall: we loved owning an XC90. The car seat configuration didn't work as our family grew but I would highly recommend.

We love our XC90! We have a rear facing 3 year old in a Evenflow Revolve 360 and a 1 year old we just switched to the Graco SlimFit. The second row fits both of these great. We leave the third road down 95% of the time for storage of stroller, dogs, etc. However, we can fit our stroller with the 3rd row up too.

I LOVE my Volvo XC90! We purchased it before we had our first child and it has been a very reliable and safe family car. Top pros: comfortable, gas milage, I feel safe and confident, EASY TO DRIVE Biggest cons: No ceiling vents, less room in 2nd row for a car seat than we thought, had to buy a converter for Apple Car Play integration

We have three kids, all three currently in car seats, and that has definitely changed how we feel about our Volvo XC90. When we only had one car seat, we absolutely loved this vehicle. It is very comfortable and drives beautifully, and I always felt incredibly safe in it. I would give it 5 stars for both safety and comfort/driving. Now that we are trying to fit three car seats in the vehicle, though, it has become much less practical for our family. Three car seats are a squeeze, and it is difficult for everyone to have enough room. A rear-facing car seat in the second row also takes up quite a bit of space, leaving limited legroom for the front passengers. This wasn't a major issue for us when we had just one car seat, but it has become much more noticeable with three. The third row is useful, but when it is being used, the trunk space is very small. With three kids and all the things that come along with them, we find ourselves needing more passenger and cargo space. We are now in the market for something bigger because we have simply outgrown the XC90. Another downside for us is servicing. It can be difficult to have the vehicle worked on anywhere other than a Volvo dealership, which is especially inconvenient because we live in a more rural area. Having to travel farther for service can be challenging. Overall, we have really enjoyed our XC90 and have always felt very safe and comfortable driving it. I would definitely recommend it for a family with one or two children. For a family with three kids in car seats, however, I would recommend looking at something with more room, especially if you plan to regularly use the third row.

I LOVED the XC90 plug in hybrid. It is such a good car - and you can't really get ignore the impeccable safety reputation. Personally, the Volvo design is just gorgeous and the interior is PLUSH. The beige interior is truly stunning. I mean that is car that you can sit in for hours while carpooling kids around. I also loved the built in booster seat. However, there were two big reasons we steered away from the Volvo. One - it is a premium gas car. In this economy? During a war where regular gas is sitting above $4/gal? No thanks. We didn't want to budget for gas. Second - it's not that big. We wanted as much space as we could get during the young kid years. I could definitely see us getting this in the future once children/future children are older.

We love this family car! The interior cream color is a dream. It’s such a luxury drive- the seats, comfort, and safety features are a dream. We’re adding a third baby and I’m keeping this car and figuring out car seat configuration because I love her so much! The technology can be finicky and is truly the one annoying part of having this car.

This is my second XC90. I love the timeless design and the simplicity of the interior. It has enough space for a family of four but is easy to maneuver and park (love the 360 camera!). I typically drive with 3rd row down for the extra trunk space but it's nice to have the 2 extra seats for kids when needed. I wouldn't recommend putting an adult back there unless they are very petite. I love the Apple CarPlay interface but hate the Volvo software. The screen is also buggy and the audio does weird things - sometimes I have to click in and out of CarPlay or turn the screen off completely to hear any sound. This is an annoyance but does not occur regularly enough to warrant a trade in. Climate control in wintertime is excellent - the Swedish know how to heat a car! However, I live in the South and if I don't park in shade in the summer the car is a literal oven for the first 5-7 min upon starting. The air also turns off when stopped at traffic lights which of course doesn't help! I love how this car drives once at cruising speed (smooth ride, handles well) but it has no get-up-and-go so I have to think carefully about highway merging and overtaking. All that to say, I overall have been pretty happy with this car and am considering a 3rd when I have to turn in my lease at end of year. I am looking into the PHEV version which will hopefully be the answer to the slow acceleration and climate control issues.

Gorgeous car with smooth driving! Third row is small, I would only use on an "as needed" basis, not full time. I had the recharge model which was decent on gas but the electric charge would only last 28 miles or so.

PROS: I bought this car (VOLVO XC90 T8 (PHEV)) when I had 3 teen/tweenagers (15, 12, and 10) and it was the perfect transitional car for our family! Carpool was still in full effect, so we still needed the 3rd row. Because our kids were older, having the 2nd row Captain's chairs was ideal for us. Bigger kids with longer legs were able to comfortably sit and stretch their legs out in the middle. Our oldest started driving soon after we bought the car (now off at college), second is driving, and my youngest will start driving in about 6 months. I've loved my soccer mom car and never had any issues with it mechanically. I take it in annually for service and the first 3 services were included, so I've only paid twice so far. I have the PHEV and living in southern California with insane gas prices, I have loved having the 20 miles of battery to get most of my errands complete during the day. We installed a Level 2 charger in our garage, so I can get a full charge in about 2.5-3 hrs. CONS: I do not love the infotainment/electronics in the Volvo. It's mostly on the screen and not intuitive. My iPhone does not connect via Bluetooth for anything beyond voice calls (so, iOS features only work if the phone is connected via USB-C). I don't love that it's mostly manual set up (2nd and 3rd row seats), but on the positive side, it's incredibly durable and my teens and their friends haven't caused any damage! OVERALL: I love my Volvo XC 90 T8 (PHEV) and highly recommend it as a family car regardless of kids' ages. It's a high-end, incredibly safe workhorse!

Excellent in the snow. Great tech features. Interior lacks some convenience like easily accessible cup holders in the second row, roomy storage in the center console. Trunk space is great with the third row down. Integrated booster is a plus when your 10 year old doesn’t meet the weight requirements to be out of a booster seat.

I could not love this car more. I use it as a 5 seater with a massive trunk with the third row down. Volvo with Nuna car seats is a match made in heaven. The integrated booster is ingenious. When I upgraded from a Q5 and RDX to the XC90, this felt like I was driving a car of the same size; it did not feel like I had upgraded in size with the drive of the vehicle. My only regret is not getting a hybrid; I average 23 mpg. I have gone from 60k to 130k in less than 3 years, and any maintenance has been simply due to wear and tear, not "European reliability".

The Volvo XC90 is a great car. Drives great in the snow and has been reliable. I love the looks of the exterior and the simplistic luxury on the inside. Made with beautiful materials on the interior. My kids are older now and most of the time we just have our two youngest with us (no car seats) and works beautifully with the third row down for extra storage. I would say the third row is good for young kids (13 and younger). I have used the integrated booster for my nephew and such a win to not have to have an extra booster on hand. I would say, if I had children in car seats I would not buy this car as I feel it’s too small for that. Any child in a booster and no car seats, this car is great. Absolutely love this car!

Love the built in booster seat in the second row. Fun to drive. Very sleek looking. Center console is tight leaving something to be desired for driver storage. As a 5 foot 6 adult, just I just rode comfortably in the second row for 2.5 hours.

My honest Volvo XC90 review after a year… I came from a BMW X5 that I LOVED, but when I got pregnant with our 2nd, I decided I needed a 3rd row. I test drove multiple SUVs, and the XC90 seemed like the obvious choice. OH WAS I WRONG Overall, I’m not happy with it. Coming from the X5, pretty much everything feels like a downgrade. The interior feels cheap for what this vehicle costs, and I constantly find myself thinking how my BMW did this better. A large issue is the captain’s chairs. I have 2 kids, a double stroller, & approximately 47 toddler necessities. With the 3rd row down, I can’t put my stroller in the trunk because the captain’s chairs leave it as a projectile. So now I have a giant SUV that somehow doesn’t feel like I have enough usable space. 🙃 The 3rd row is basically for children who are approximately the size of a loaf of bread. If you even remotely enjoy having legroom, good luck back there. Car seats are a struggle. My husband is over 6ft, and he can’t sit with my son RF behind him. We use the Nuna REVV behind the driver so my son can FF when my husband drives. He meets the age/weight requirements for FF but it’s not my favorite solution. Meanwhile, our Nuna PIPA behind the passenger means the seat is pushed extremely far forward. I was also SO excited about the plug-in hybrid. I thought it was going to be perfect for daycare drop off and back but it has about 21 EV miles. Twenty-one… In full EV mode, the car is painfully slow when you need to accelerate, especially merging. I’ve genuinely felt uncomfortable relying on it. I started using hybrid mode, but I haven’t noticed enough of a mpg difference to care. I don’t even plug it in anymore because it feels like another chore for zero reward. There’s so much more I could add but overall would I buy it again? No, If you’re coming from a non-luxury SUV, you may love the XC90. But if you’re coming from a BMW and expecting a similar luxury driving experience, test drive thoroughly first.

I love the exterior of this car so much! The safety was a priority for us and you can definitely feel the weight of the car while driving. The second row fits a rear facing car seat fine, but the passenger seat does have to be up more than we would like in order to have a proper installation without the car seat touching the back of the seat (graco turn2me) The biggest downside to this car to me is the technology. It is so glitchy! The air randomly turns off not to mention I often get in my car and no sound works… Volvo just suggests “resetting” the screen. This does work but it’s annoying to have to do it as often as I do! I also didn’t realize how much I would miss cooled seats, but I definitely am sad this car doesn’t have them! Also wish it had sun shades, sunglasses holder, and rear ceiling vents.

Had a Volvo for almost 10 years. Love it but I wish it was slightly bigger. Love the built in booster in the second row. Find accessing the third row is hard. Great trunk space when third row is down. Love the plug in hybrid. Drives well. Handles well.

This was my dream car for many years and we bought the 2023 XC 90-Recharge when I was pregnant with my 3rd kiddo. From a drivers perspective, I LOVED this car. The technology was amazing, the adaptive cruise control, the safety warnings, I specifically waited to get the 2023 for the Google interface. I loved the moon roof/panoramic sun roof. I hardly spent any money on gas, really using the electric power more often then not. Front row-amazing. Second row, great for two kids in a not warm climate. I got the integrated booster and that was wonderful to have all 3 kids in the second row (FF,RF,B). However as the kids got a little older and we moved to FL we started having a lot of issues with the set up. Air flow was really challenging for my RF kiddo and it's HOT here most of the year. Getting in and out of the car for school drop off was miserable. My FF kiddo needed help opening the door to get out and her seat+ bag blocked my older kiddo (booster) from helping her resulting in tears on the daily. We tried to the utilize the 3rd row more...but with no car seat tilt and no aisle...this also got problematic really quick. There were only electronic chargers in the front row, not in the second or 3rd, which caused issues on car trips. Probably my most hated quality was the fact that they didn't at least give you a strap to open/fold the third row, you basically had to crawl in the car to open it...for a >60k car! We ended up trading it in. It wasn't worth the high payment and constant headache of trying to make things work. I still think it's a great car, and I loved a lot about it, but...maybe not for 3 kids on the daily.

I had a 2023 Volvo XC90 and truly loved so many things about this car. It felt luxurious without being overly flashy, was wonderful to drive, and had so many features that I appreciated. However, as a mom with young children in car seats, there were a few things I wish I had realized before purchasing it. The biggest issue for me was space. The second row and trunk space ended up feeling much more limited than I anticipated once I actually had car seats installed. On paper, the XC90 seemed like it would give us plenty of room as a three-row SUV, but in everyday life with car seats, a stroller, diaper bags, and everything else that comes with young kids, it felt tight much more quickly than I expected. The second row was especially something I didn’t fully appreciate until our car seats were installed. Car seats take up so much space, and once they were in, there wasn’t nearly as much usable room as I had pictured when initially looking at the vehicle. Cargo space was another drawback for our family. If you’re a mom who regularly carries a double stroller, groceries, luggage, or all the gear needed for a road trip with young children, I would definitely recommend bringing your stroller and even your car seats with you when test-driving the XC90. The trunk looks like a decent size when it’s empty, but it fills up very quickly with real-life kid gear, particularly when you’re also using the third row. I still think the 2023 XC90 is a beautiful vehicle, and there were many things about it that I loved. But if you’re specifically shopping for a family SUV and have multiple children in car seats, I would pay very close attention to the second-row and cargo space. For our stage of life, I ultimately realized that I wanted significantly more room than the XC90 offered.

I had a bench for the second row with a rear facing, forward facing and infant car seat. It was snug. Really snug. It might have been better with a different combination of car seats. We kept the third row down for extra trunk space, but if we did need it, it was pretty tight to sit in the back. I remember it being better than other cars in the same size family, but it was still a tad tight. I did not like that the climate control was included in the touch screen. It was distracting and not the most intuitive. You were also required to use the app to use the remote start. There were no buttons for that on the key fob. If someone else needed to start it I would have to unlock my phone for them. I just like the option to do that on the key fob and not be required to use the phone. Also, the app was free for the first year or two but after that you had to pay. I didn’t have the car long enough, but then I would have been paying to be able to remote start the car, which is ridiculous. It also didn’t have a sunglasses holder which I would have liked. It drove nice and looked nice, but it had some fluky things. If the kids fit better, we probably would have kept it longer, any issues aside.

Really happy with this car. It's safe, roomy enough for the whole family, and comfortable for longer drives. My only real complaint is the seats run narrow and the buckles are pretty stiff — my 7-year-old still struggles to get himself buckled into his booster without help. We ended up having to buy a new booster that would better accommodate buckling.

Love my Volvo as a mom’s car. Super convenient, luxurious and car seat friendly. Lots of horsepower and phenomenal safety features. My one gripe is that the infotainment system is now outdated comparatively to their new releases. Highly recommended going with the T8 and higher trim on the Volvo- it’s a great to return our investment for what you pay in upgrades

I love this car. I have the bench model, and easily fit my two kids and all their gear. We often have a dog, and additional friends who all travel comfortably. The built in booster has saved us a few times when friends needed a ride. It's reliable, it drive amazing, it feels incredibly sturdy. One of my favorite features is the ability to engage and disengage the child locks from the driver door panel. The cup holders are good, they could be better but it wouldn't deter me from this car. The base model comes with so many features the need to upgrade isn't necessary.

Love my Volvo XC90! It's so spacious and the safety features give me peace of mind. We have a Nuna Revv rotating car seat for my toddler and a Doona for my 5 month old and there is still room (although it's tight) for someone to sit in the middle between them. The trunk space (with the 3rd row down) is amazing. We've never used the 3rd row so I can't speak to it's comfort. All of that being said, the technology already seems very outdated after only 5 years old. The screen is pretty slow. It doesn't bother me because I just listen to Bluetooth but it could be annoying. The wireless charger is nice but it's a little finicky if you don't have your phone set on it just perfectly.

Great for tall families with car seats. Easily fits large car seats with room for a small middle seater and plenty of passenger leg room. Love the middle seat built-in booster too! Third row could fit car seat in a pinch but I think no anchors?? Apple CarPlay is touchy 10/10 would buy it again

I bought the Volvo XC90 primarily because of its safety ratings. It really does feel like you’re driving a tank, which gives me a lot of confidence when my kids are in the car. I like the exterior styling, but I find the interior to be pretty basic. The seats aren’t overly comfortable, and the technology feels somewhat dated and basic compared to other vehicles. One of my biggest complaints is the lack of second-row ceiling air vents. Even when the AC is running on full blast, my kids still complain that it’s too hot in the back. With three kids and frequent driving, that’s a pretty significant issue for me. Overall, I feel very confident in the XC90’s safety, but the comfort, interior, and technology are just ok.

I am obsessed with my car! It’s beautiful, highly recommend maroon brown interior. Minus half a star on interior design for narrow console area and wasted space where there could be a third cup holder. Minus a star on second row comfort because - before you buy this car- please make sure your car seats fit!!! Specifically, if you are tall, the Nuna pipa infant seat with the base will not fit. High back boosters also do not fit well because of the non removable head rests. Infuriating!! That is my only gripe. I also think it would have been pretty easy to add car seat anchors and tether hook to the third row… but no. All that said, I still love it! This car is luxurious, sporty, and I feel extremely safe driving my family around in it.

This car is beautiful inside and out but it was not a great fit for my growing family. The back seat air ventilation wasn’t great either for my children in their car seats, especially my child that’s still rear facing. I think this car would work for a family with older children that don’t require ample car seat space.

I’ve had this car 5 years and still love it so much. It’s fit my 2 kids through various carseat stages and now I’m loving the built in booster when we have booster-size friends riding with us. Have had very few issues over the 5 years and I feel very safe driving it which is my #1 priority in a car.

Our whole family loves our car! Pros: safety, gas mileage, overall look, comfort, quiet Scandinavian luxury, fun to drive with over 400hp, built in booster seat. Cons: expensive maintenance, no wireless Apple carplay, nonremovable head rests limit the forward facing car seat options, tight squeeze for taller drivers when rear facing car seats are installed, no ceiling vents.

The exterior is gorgeous. I was expecting a bigger wow factor inside but is sort of disappointing. I felt i would be compromising a-lot of functionality for gorgeous good looks. Would consider again in the future is budget allows but for the price I could not give up on some interior functionality for my daily use.

I love my car. I have captain chairs and each grandson sets in a booster. I don’t haul strollers anymore. The truck is small but I can get my Costco or grocery bags in without a problem. I wish the captain chairs had arm rest. I don’t think the back seats are as comfortable as they could be. I think adding arm rest would resolve this. The vents in the back are on the sides. A refacing baby however would need the car cooled before hand because of this. The second row needs better cup holders. The third row has great cup holders. It also could use more USB ports for second and third rows. I had a Lexus RX 350 prior to this car and I drove it for 14 1/2 years. Hoping to get that out of this one. I have had no major issues with the car. I have put new tires on and just once a year oil changes. It’s comfortable. I drive a lot of high miles to see grandsons and I do love it.

Works great for family of 5. Two rotating car seats in captains chairs and booster in third for me son. Trunk is tight with both seats up but doable. Wish it had sun shades and a few more amenities in the 3rd row. Also, never understand why built in booster is only an option with bench!
