Safety

The 2021 Subaru Forester Is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+

The 2021 Subaru Forester received an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick+ award.

Front And Rear Outboard Seat Belt Pretensioners Are Included

The 2021 Subaru Forester includes seat belt pretensioners for the driver, front passenger, and rear outboard seating positions. These systems are designed to help tighten the seat belts during certain types of collisions.

Subaru EyeSight Driver Assist Technology Comes Standard

The 2021 Forester comes standard with EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, which includes features like Pre-Collision Braking, Lane Departure and Sway Warning, Lane Keep Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control.

Rear Seat Reminder And Rear Vision Camera Are Standard

The 2021 Subaru Forester includes a standard rear vision camera and rear seat reminder to help families keep track of passengers and belongings in the back seat.

Steering Responsive LED Headlights Improve Visibility

The 2021 Subaru Forester includes Steering Responsive LED Headlights and High Beam Assist as standard equipment.

Car Seat Setup

The 2021 Subaru Forester has two dedicated sets of lower LATCH anchors in the second row outboard seats, plus three top tether anchors across the back row. This gives you flexibility for forward-facing installs across all second-row seating positions.

One important thing to know: the center seat uses a shared lower anchor setup between the passenger-side and center seating positions. Subaru specifies that only one set can be used at a time, so you cannot borrow anchors to create a dedicated center LATCH position while also using the passenger-side lower anchors.

The driver-side and passenger-side seats both have full lower anchors and tether anchors, which makes those positions the easiest for most car seat installations.

The center seat does not have dedicated lower anchors, but it does include a top tether anchor, so a forward-facing seat can still be installed there using the vehicle seat belt plus the tether anchor.

All three second-row seating positions include non-removable headrests, which is something to keep in mind depending on the shape and fit of your forward-facing car seat or booster.

It’s a great car that has great trunk space. Good for 2 kids. Hard for 3 across.

We love our Forester. It has been perfect for us as a family of 4. Adding kid 3 in a few weeks so we’re interested to see how well it does with three across. The trunk space in this car is incredible. I think more moms of 1 or 2 should be considering the Forester.

3 across machine with a large trunk! This car has evolved with me from 1-3 kids all the way through booster stages. Currently have 2 HBB seats and a FF seat and fits like a dream. Diono Aire was the only HBB that fit with 3 across and was also easy to buckle. Cosco backless booster fits perfectly as a backless. Slimfit3lx and Chicco fit3x fit in the center seat perfectly. Honestly a dream car to grow with your family and still have a great size trunk.

This car has been a workhorse for us. We have owned it for 8 years and have only had a few minor mechanical issues. We did buy it before having kids, and now knowing what we know, would not recommend to families. There are no rear air conditioning vents which makes it very hard to cool the car down. We also have black leather interior which I will never ever get in any car again because it is so darn hot. Other than those things, the car is fairly spacious, although neither my Nuna Pipa or RF Nuna Rava could be placed behind my tall husband when he drives. Nowadays, this is our secondary car and we don’t keep car seats in it unless absolutely necessary because of the comfort issues I mentioned. If kids are a bit older or not in car seats or you don’t need To use the back seat very often, would recommend for reliability, functionality, and overall drive. It has lived with us in the mountains, snow, and now blazing heat of Texas, and has been a very reliable vehicle in all regions. Can’t beat Subaru for 4WD! Just maybe not your everyday RF kids in car seats car…

This is my husband’s car, our secondary family vehicle. We all fit, but the middle seat is rather narrow. Multiple car seats/boosters or more than 2 teens might be a tight fit. We purchased with the intent of handing down to our teen drivers in ~5 years. We live in a state with 4 seasons and appreciate the all weather capabilities of Subaru.

This car is two car seat friendly but not for very tall drivers. My husband is six feet and does not fit comfortably with either the infant seat or FF car seat behind the driver. I am 5’ 2” and I can comfortably sit with both seats behind me. It can easily fit a double Zoe stroller in the trunk with some space for other items. Drives well in the snow as I live in the Northeast so it has seen many snow storms.

I love this car! It's been super reliable, with keeping up to date on scheduled maintenance, and it's so comfortable. The included safety tech, such as steering responsive headlights, emergency braking assist, blind spot monitoring, provides so much peace of mind when it comes to driving around my family! We have had a variety of child carseats in the back seat - Chicco Keyfit30, Graco Extend2Fit 3in1, Graco 4Ever DLX, Nina Rava, and Evenflo Revolve Extend - and they have all fit super well with easy installations. Additionally, trunk is so spacious and can fit a Baby Trend Navigator stroller wagon perfectly, with a little bit of room to spare. The details on this site for the 2021 states that the rear seat head restraints are not removable, but that is incorrect. They can all be removed to accommodate a forward facing seat if needed.

Trunk space is amazing. I can fit my Mockingbird stroller with 2 seats on one side and still have room for groceries, bags, and backpacks on the other half. The legroom for the driver and passenger is fine without car seats, but once you add a rear-facing car seat, it gets tight. I'm 5'6" and have no issue, but my 5'10" husband is cramped with the RF car seat behind him.

Very reliable with great safety ratings. It’s an easy drive and I appreciate it being a small SUV that is easy to park. Second row is tight, both front to back and across the bench. I have two rotating car seats for convenience, but they are a tight fit and I cannot fit in between the seats for long drives.

I have a 2026 Hybrid Subaru Forester & I absolutely LOVE it. It’s so good on mileage, I drive a ton for work, and it fits my 35oz water bottle which was a huge win for me. It has tons of cool features as well. The only con is that the AC in the back is on the back of the middle console and not on the ceiling but isn’t a huge deal breaker for me. I had a 2024 Forester and upgraded to this one because we got a really good deal on it and are only paying $50 more than we were for our other one. We bought that one brand new too and this one felt like a big upgrade.

We live in NYC and use our car for frequent weekend trips (not daily driving). Because we sometimes park it on the street in the city, we wanted a smaller SUV. We were upgrading from a 2007 Xterra, and shockingly EVERYTHING is longer than an Xterra nowadays...even a Corolla. Purchased this used a few years old. The Forester feels spacious inside where it matters without being a massive boat that is impossible to parallel park. We have the Touring trim level which feels very fancy to me (again, coming from a 2007 car anything would be an upgrade). It has plenty of real buttons and a reasonable sized (aka smallish) screen. I'm not a personal fan of driving with what feels like a desktop computer in front of me, so the 2021 has the right level of tech/amenities for us. Apple CarPlay, review camera, heated seats (incl. second row), heated steering wheel, great for snow/mountains. Giant trunk that fits 2 sets of adult golf clubs and a stroller at the same time.

Bought this car one month before having our first child and had absolutely ZERO regrets. You sit high up for a 5 seater SUV which gives excellent visibility. We fit two kids in Nuna Execs RF comfortably, even with enough space that an adult is able to sit in between, if needed! Husband uses as daily driver now. No problems at all ~70K in.

My husband drives a Subaru Forester for his work car, but it is also used as our second vehicle. We just got this car a few months ago, as a passenger the back seat is rather roomy for the car seats and not needing to be in the dashboard for extra room. My toddler is in a Maxi-Cosi Pria in this car so it is a bigger car seat, but it was the car seat I chose as a first time mom for my registry knowing nothing really about car seats. My 1 year old is in her Uppa Baby Mesi still and it has good seat clearance for my husband who drives. My worry is that the middle seat is so slim with these current carseats and we have a 3rd child coming so reconfiguration will be happening soon. As for the technology we did run into the issue of the seatbelt alarm going off where my baby's infant seat is, so we had to clip the seatbelt to get that to stop. Trunk space is great and can fit out Uppa Vista V2 with no issues. Overall good car, but keep in mind the slim middle seat if you need all three passenger seats in the back.

Honestly, people sleep on the Sub Forester & it's one of the best smaller SUVs not only for its incredible safety ratings but for a daily driver. It's a no fuss daily driver, but holds value! It's my husband's daily driver but it fits both of our kids comfortably with FF and RF car seats in the backseat. We bought it because my husband is 6'4" and it fits WITH EXTRA room, which is hard to find. What really sold me was when my husband fell asleep at the wheel & collided, head first into a stopped semi truck, totaled his 2019 forester & walked away without a single scratch. The Forrester saved him & for that reason, we will keep this car until it's done & plan to pass it down to our 4 year old when she can drive in 12 years. Trust me, don't sleep on the forester!

I drive this car daily with my two kids 6 and 4, it does the job as a daily driver on my commute to and from work and school. I think the kids are fairly comfortable in the 2nd row. There are no air vents back there though so that is definitely a big negative. Overall, my rating feels adequate for an older and cost effective vehicle

This is my mom’s car, she has the Touring model. We often switch when she has all my kids and when we don’t feel like removing car seats. This is such a cute little SUV. The trunk is spacious, all three of my kids fit in the second row just fine, with one in a convertible. It gets up and goes really well. My mom lives up in the mountains , and it handles snow, sleet, and windy roads very well. All the safety features are there, she gets an alert if she appears tired or her eyes aren’t on the road. Navigation is a feature the car gives at the Touring level, in my 22 Limited ascent, it’s not available. I would recommend this car for 2 kids, and if you’re a mountain mom.

I live in an area that gets a lot of snow in the winter and I have always felt safe driving this car that time of year! Handles the snow and ice very well. Great on gas mileage. With 2 car seats in the back the middle seat is very narrow so to have a person in between is tight.

This has been a great Dad car for us. My husband went with the wilderness trim and has zero regrets. We have two rear facing car seats. The tech is great, the seats are comfortable and overall feels like a solid vehicle. Even though there are no ceiling vents, the a/c in this car is amazing. My kids stay cool and my oldest has said she was too cold on a scorching hot and humid summer day. Overall this is a great Dad car and even possibly a mom car. I will say I find the steering very floaty when driving at higher speeds. I don’t particularly enjoy driving this car but have on occasion. We purchased new and my husband absolutely loves it!

Overall, the Subaru has been just okay for our family. The biggest issue is that we can’t fit three car seats across, which means we can only use it when we have two of our three kids with us. For a family with three young children, that really limits how practical the vehicle is. The interior also feels a little cheap compared to other vehicles we’ve owned, and I wish some of the materials and finishes felt more substantial. One big positive is the trunk space. There’s a good amount of cargo room, which is great for groceries, strollers, and all the extra stuff that comes along with kids. It has some good qualities, but ultimately it just isn’t the most functional vehicle for a family needing to accommodate three car seats.

My husband and I are taller people (he's 6'1 and I'm 5'11). This car is hard for us to fit someone comfortably in the front seat with my son rear facing. We drove this car cross country (& back!) and it did great, minus acceleration on our way back (after we added more stuff plus put a roof bag on top). The back seat isn't super comfy, but it's doable. Trunk space is great! We fit our wagon in it.

This car is a beast in the snow. My son sits rear facing in an evenflo 360 slim which fits the car well. My second on the way will sit in a Clek Liing which I’m confident will work well too. I can barely squeeze in between those 2 seats which makes me a little nervous but hopefully it’ll be okay. I’ve never felt safer in a car and the interior is nicer than a rav4 or equivalent imo!

This was my first brand new car, first lease and the brand new red design of the forester. I was originally getting a CRV to replace my 2011 CRV but ended up loving the Subaru more. Pros for me off the bat was the trunk. Wow. So spacious! I also love the visibility and of course, Subaru safety features is key. I loved that it came with a sun roof but it only opens, doesn’t tilt so keep that in mind. I love everything about Subarus eyesight features as well. It’s also fun to put into sport mode on the highway for a nice punch. It’s got a decent rear seat legroom for rear facing seats. I have two Nuna rava sand previously a Chicco key fit 35 with base and both my and my husband had decent leg room. (5’7 and 5’10) Now the cons :( the infotainment center. While I love the big screen, it’s clunky and I hate that my climate controls are on the screen. It spazzes out and trying to do it while driving feels a little unsafe lol. The cupholders are comically placed. They fixed it in the next gen thankfully. And lastly, the fact that if you have to replace 1 tire, you have to replace them all cause of that AWD baby. I didn’t know that going in. Lastly; I feel like Subaru is kinda behind the tech game in general. Otherwise, I am very happy with my purchase, but glad I leased so I can try the new Outback next.

I love my Forester! Consumer reports "Driving Cars" has a podcast episode about the 2026 Forester that helped me decide on it. It is safe, reliable, and the perfect size for me.
