Features We Love

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L was a complete redesign, and I actually think Jeep did a really impressive job balancing luxury, family functionality, and thoughtful car seat features. It feels elevated inside, the car seat setup is genuinely practical, and there’s enough flexibility here for bigger families without making the SUV feel massive to drive.

  • Car seat friendly tilt makes third-row access easier: the second-row captain’s chair can tilt forward even with a forward-facing car seat installed, which is one of my favorite features in this SUV.
  • Lower anchors in both second-row captain’s chairs: easy to access and simple to install car seats into.
  • Tether anchors in all four rear seats: Jeep included tether anchors in both second-row seats and both third-row seats, which gives families a lot more flexibility for forward-facing car seats.
  • Third row is actually usable for older kids: I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of knee room back there, especially with the second row adjusted forward a bit.
  • Captain’s chairs make the cabin feel more open: I liked the pathway to the third row better than squeezing through a folded bench seat.
  • Bench seat option adds flexibility: you can also configure this with a second-row bench seat if you need seating for seven instead of six.
  • The rear-facing clearance impressed me: I had the driver’s seat set for myself at 6 feet tall, and the rear-facing Clek still fit behind me with decent space left over.
  • The third row only has two seats: I actually appreciate that Jeep didn’t try to cram a third seating position back there. It makes the third row feel much more comfortable and usable.

The Exterior

The Redesigned Grand Cherokee L Looks Much More Upscale

The 2021 Grand Cherokee L was a complete redesign, and I honestly think Jeep made this SUV look far more premium than the outgoing generation. The exterior feels cleaner, longer, and more refined while still keeping that classic Jeep styling families tend to love.

This SUV definitely has more road presence than the previous Grand Cherokee. The longer body gives it a more substantial look without making it feel intimidating to drive.

  • The redesign feels noticeably more upscale: this does not look like the older Grand Cherokee at all in person.
  • The longer wheelbase changes the proportions: the added length helps the SUV feel sleeker and gives the third row much better functionality.
  • The front end looks cleaner and more modern: Jeep simplified a lot of the design details compared to the previous generation.
  • The lower ride height helps with accessibility: getting kids in and out of car seats feels manageable without needing a huge step up.
  • The black trim and wheel options work really well: especially on the higher trims where the exterior starts feeling almost luxury-level.

The Grand Cherokee L Does Not Feel As Massive As Other Three-Row SUVs

Even though this is a true three-row SUV, it still feels easier to maneuver than some of the larger full-size options families cross-shop.

I also like that Jeep did not make the doors overly heavy. Opening the second-row doors while holding a baby carrier or helping kids climb in felt pretty easy overall.

  • Wide rear door openings help with car seats: there is enough space to comfortably load rear-facing seats.
  • The exterior still feels very “Jeep”: boxy enough to feel rugged, but much more polished than before.
  • Roof rails are functional for families: especially for road trips or extra cargo storage.

Much more upscale than before

First Row

The first row of the redesigned Grand Cherokee L feels much more premium than the previous generation. Jeep really upgraded the materials, technology, and overall layout, and I think this interior punches above its price point in a lot of ways.

The Screens And Technology Feel Truly Modern

The infotainment setup is one of the first things I noticed in this SUV. Everything feels clean, easy to use, and thoughtfully placed instead of overly complicated.

  • Large infotainment screen feels well integrated: the screen placement looks sleek without feeling distracting while driving.
  • Digital gauge cluster modernizes the cabin: it immediately feels more upscale compared to the outgoing generation.
  • Physical controls are still easy to access: I appreciate that Jeep did not bury every climate control inside the screen.
  • The camera quality is impressive: especially helpful in a larger three-row SUV when parking or maneuvering in tight spaces.

Storage In The Front Row Is Extremely Functional

I think Jeep did a really good job making the first row feel practical for families. There are a lot of usable storage areas without the cabin feeling cluttered.

  • Large center console holds a ton: enough room for everyday family clutter without overflowing everywhere.
  • Cupholders are easy to reach: simple, but important.
  • Phone storage placement feels intentional: there is enough room to keep devices accessible without taking over the entire console area.
  • Passenger storage is generous: the dashboard and door storage areas feel very functional for road trips and family use.

The Seating Position Feels Comfortable Without Feeling Huge

One thing I really liked while driving the Grand Cherokee L is that visibility feels manageable despite this being a three-row SUV. The hood is not overly intimidating, and the cabin feels open without making the vehicle feel difficult to place on the road.

The seats themselves also feel noticeably more comfortable and supportive than the previous generation. Jeep clearly wanted this redesign to feel more refined overall.

Second Row

The second row is honestly one of the biggest reasons I think the Grand Cherokee L works so well for families. Jeep clearly thought through car seat functionality here, especially with the captain’s chairs and the ability to access the third row without uninstalling a car seat.

Lower Anchors In Both Captain’s Chairs And Tether Anchors In All Four Rear Seats

The second-row captain’s chairs each include a set of lower anchors, and Jeep also included tether anchors in all four rear seating positions across the second and third rows.

That flexibility matters if you have multiple forward-facing kids or are constantly moving seats around.

  • Lower anchors in both captain’s chairs: easy to locate and simple to install into.
  • Tether anchors in all four rear seats: both second-row seats and both third-row seats have tether anchors.
  • Bench seat option changes the setup: if you choose the bench seat instead of captain’s chairs, Jeep includes three LATCH positions across the second row.

The Car Seat Friendly Tilt Is One Of The Best Features In This SUV

This is one of my favorite family features in the entire vehicle. Jeep designed the second-row seats so they can tilt forward even with a forward-facing car seat installed.

I absolutely love this because it makes third-row access dramatically easier for families actually using car seats every day.

  • Forward-facing car seats can stay installed: you do not have to uninstall the seat just to access the third row.
  • The tilt pathway feels manageable for kids: much easier than climbing awkwardly over a fixed car seat.
  • Captain’s chairs help the cabin feel more functional: especially for bigger families constantly moving between rows.

Rear-Facing Space Works Well Even For Taller Drivers

I tested a rear-facing Clek behind the driver’s seat with the seat adjusted for myself at 6 feet tall, and I was honestly impressed with the clearance. There was still enough room to sit comfortably up front without feeling cramped.

The second row itself also feels comfortable for adults and older kids.

  • Good knee room in the second row: even with taller front-seat settings.
  • Second-row seats slide on tracks: you can shift space between the second and third rows depending on your family’s needs.
  • Sunshades, climate controls, and USB ports are all included: which makes this feel much more family-ready on longer drives.

Third Row

The Third Row Is Actually Comfortable Enough To Use

One thing that surprised me about the Grand Cherokee L is that the third row does not feel like an afterthought. Jeep clearly used the added length from this redesign to make the back row genuinely functional for families, especially compared to a lot of midsize three-row SUVs.

I also appreciate that Jeep kept this as a true two-seat third row instead of trying to squeeze in a cramped middle seat that nobody actually wants to use.

Accessing The Third Row Is Much Easier Than Most SUVs

The captain’s chairs make a huge difference back here. I really liked that the second-row seats can tilt forward even with a forward-facing car seat installed because that is usually one of the biggest frustrations in three-row SUVs.

Kids can actually get back there without you needing to uninstall a car seat every time someone climbs in.

  • Second-row seats tilt with a car seat installed: one of the best family-friendly features in this SUV.
  • The pathway to the third row feels open: especially with the captain’s chair configuration.

Jeep Prioritized Passenger Comfort In The Back Row

The third row has dedicated vents, USB ports, cupholders, and enough headroom that older kids and even adults can sit back there comfortably for shorter drives.

The large side windows also help the third row feel less closed in, which I think makes a big difference for kids riding back there regularly.

Trunk

The Grand Cherokee L Has Really Practical Trunk Space

I was pleasantly surprised by the trunk space in the Grand Cherokee L. It actually felt bigger than I expected for this size SUV, and I thought it felt larger than the GMC Acadia I was driving around the same time.

With the third row up, this works well for groceries and everyday gear, but my Mockingbird stroller did not fit back there.

Folding The Third Row Makes A Huge Difference

Once I folded the third row down, the cargo area felt much more functional for family life. There is plenty of room for larger strollers, sports gear, luggage, or a Costco haul.

  • 46.9 cubic feet behind the second row: plenty of usable family cargo space
  • 84.6 cubic feet with both rear rows folded: the trunk feels huge once everything is down
  • Power-folding third row: easy to fold directly from the trunk area
  • Extra storage throughout the cargo area: helpful for smaller items

Safety

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Received Good Ratings In Key IIHS Crashworthiness Tests

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L received Good ratings in the IIHS driver-side small overlap front test and moderate overlap front original test.

Front And Second Row Outboard Seat Belt Pretensioners Are Included

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L includes pretensioning devices in the front and second-row outboard seat belt systems. These devices are designed to remove slack from the seat belt early in a collision and are intended to work for occupants of all sizes, including those in child restraints.

Driver Assistance And Safety Features Continue Across The Lineup

  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Lane departure warning and prevention
  • Rear automatic braking
  • Seat belt reminders
  • Premium headlight configurations depending on trim
  • Additional active safety and driver assistance technology depending on trim and package
Car Seat Setup

The Grand Cherokee L Is One Of The Better Three-Row SUVs For Car Seats

I think Jeep did a really thoughtful job with the car seat setup in the Grand Cherokee L. Between the captain’s chairs, the sliding second row, and the ability to access the third row with a car seat installed, this feels like a vehicle designed by people who actually understand family life.

Lower Anchors Are In Both Second-Row Seats And Tether Anchors Are In All Four Rear Seats

The second-row captain’s chairs each have a set of lower anchors, and there are tether anchors in both second-row seats and both third-row seats.

That setup gives families a lot of flexibility, especially if you have multiple forward-facing kids.

  • Lower anchors in both captain’s chairs: easy to locate and easy to access
  • Tether anchors in all four rear seats: both second-row and third-row seating positions include tether anchors
  • Bench seat option changes the setup: choosing the second-row bench gives you three LATCH positions across the second row instead of captain’s chairs

The Second Row Tilts Forward With A Car Seat Installed

This is probably my favorite family feature in the Grand Cherokee L. The second-row seats can tilt forward even with a forward-facing car seat installed, which makes getting into the third row dramatically easier.

I do not think people realize how rare and helpful this feature is until they are climbing around car seats every day.

  • Forward-facing seats can stay installed: you do not need to uninstall a car seat for third-row access
  • Kids can access the third row more independently: especially with the captain’s chair layout
  • The walkway feels wide enough to actually use: which is not always true in midsize three-row SUVs

Rear-Facing Space Worked Well For Me At 6 Feet Tall

I tested a rear-facing Clek behind the driver’s seat with my seat adjusted for myself at 6 feet tall, and I still had enough room to sit comfortably up front.

The second row also slides forward and backward, so you can adjust the balance between second-row leg room and third-row space depending on your family’s needs.

  • Rear-facing fit was better than expected: especially for a midsize three-row SUV
  • Sliding second row helps distribute space: between the second and third rows
  • Captain’s chairs make loading kids easier: especially when helping buckle multiple children

While I love the look of my Jeep and the vehicle's functionality works pretty well for our family of 5. The reliability and safety rating of the brand are what it lacks. I have had the Grand Cherokee L as a lease for 4 years, and it has had more recalls than service appointments!!

We loved the style of this vehicle and we were comfortable as a family of 4. I did not love that it was only a 6 passenger vehicle as we sometimes carry a few extra family members and 7 seats just works better for us. Trunk is tight with third row up. We had few reliability concerns within the first 20k miles and traded it in.

We love, love, love our Jeep GCL! Bought it new in 2021 and went from one to three kids in that time. We have the Altitude trim + bench. It’s roomy, comfortable and fun to drive with a full sunroof. We had a few small tech issues with the screen and CarPlay can be finicky here and there but we’ve taken care of this vehicle and it has taken care of us. We started with an UPPA baby Mesa car seat in the center seat of the bench which worked pretty well. My husband is 6’1 and can still sit comfortably even with an infant seat. Then we had a Nuna Rava rear facing behind driver + the Mesa behind passenger (and eventually a Rava also rear facing). When we welcomed our third, we bought two Graco SlimFitLX’s. One rear facing behind driver (currently 22 months old), one forward facing in center (nearly 4 years old) and the Mesa behind passenger. It works well for us know and we can fit all three securely without overlap. I am eyeing a rotating seat for our 6 month old as the bucket is becoming too heavy and I want my 4 year old to be able to climb in easily while also keeping the baby rear facing (obviously!) Any suggestion on rotating seat (easy install preferably!) is appreciated!!

We loved this car for our family of 4! At the time we had a toddler and a newborn, so it was perfect for us to haul all our large baby items! It didn't have ceiling vents, so that was rough during the summer, but we just did automatic start for about 5 minutes and that always helped! It drove so smoothly and we loved how it handled on the highway! We only had one hiccup with technology were it needed an update and we were not at home. We were visiting family out of town and it refused to start when we went to leave. Thankfully we were able to call our dealership and they were able to help us enter a code to get to them about an hour away (very stressful drive). They fixed the issue right away and it never happened again! We loved this car, but ended up trading it in for something just a little smaller because it fit our family better as we grew out of the toddler and baby stage. We travel to see family about 10 times a year, so this was perfect fit for us during that stage of life!

This is my 2nd Jeep Grand Cherokee L. I like the interior a lot, it is comfortable and spacious. I like space in the second row for a car seat and kids are still able to easily get to the 3rd row. The trunk isn't huge with the third row up, however I was still able to fit an Uppa Baby Vista/ sports equipment, chairs, etc.

She’s been the most wonderful car. We have a bench seat, I have two children, when we originally purchased I only had one RF child and then had a second. We’ve put 130k original miles on her. She had only 1k miles when purchased. Limited Trim, features included sunroof, FamCam, Digital Rearview Mirror camera, side steps, and sun shades. The bench seat was very helpful so I could sit between when my kids were younger. I usually got 20 mpg when driving around town, 22 on the HWY. She has a good amount of get up and go. Fit easily in parking spots and our garage. We do have a Jeep OEM roof rack, it sits up pretty high but is easy to install. The only issue I’ve ever had was a trunk strut, driver side, the way they install it is almost upside down. When going through high pressure car washes the water drips into the strut (gravity) and eventually it implodes from corrosion. The first time this happened it was under warranty the second we were not and had a local repair shop replace and installed the strut the opposite way, so when closed if there were water drops it wouldn’t drip into the strut it would just drip down and I no longer have that issue. The fam cam is my absolute fav. It lets you view children rear facing in second row or forward facing in third. We dont use the third row unless we have family visiting so usually it’s covered with a weather tech mat. I have been able to fit 4 adults, two children in Ff car seats, an uppababy vista and an uppababy Cruz and two diaper bags. It was semi tight but it worked! The seats of the strollers went at the kids feet while the body of strollers fit in the trunk with third row up. My husband is 6’3” and with a RF Nuna Pipa or Nuna REV (older model) he was able to sit in front seat and not have the car seat touch the front seat and his knees were not touching the dash! We’ve owned her in eastern NC and now South Texas. The second row ac vents weren’t a huge deal by the ocean in NC, however it is significantly hotter in San Antonio and it has been more noticeable for my kids sweaty backs. If we park my car in the garage it’s not as bad, the car does cool off after about 10-15 minutes but that initial get in and go in the second row is rough with my kids if the car has been sitting in the sun for more than an hour. After moving her to the garage we noticed it was much better when getting in initially. The sun shades definitely help with keeping it cool if we park at the store or go to a theme park. We do have very dark window tint, probably a couple shades darker than legal limit and that also gave a significant difference in heat. However I can’t say I would buy another one in Texas purely because of the heat down here. If we moved back to NC I would without thinking twice.

I have the Limited model with upgraded tech and it’s the car I say I’ll drive into the ground. It has all of the tech I need with Car Play, fam cam, heated and cooled seats in the front. I love the drive and pick up. The fam cam, built in sunshades and fairly spacious trunk has been great for having our daughter from infant to toddler. My only complaint is that sometimes the CarPlay doesn’t correct properly and that’s annoying in the moment. I have 2 captain chairs instead of a bench and sometimes I wish I had the bench instead. But it’s great for smaller kids and adults. I drove around 5 adults while work colleagues were in town and they raved about how comfortable it was.

This was and still is my dream family car. I only have two kids and one is in a high back booster now. We had two carseats in the middle row for a bit and had plenty of room. The carseat tilt to get to the third row is a game changer and there was enough room for extra kiddos/cousins to ride in the way back. Trunk space is great when the two back seats are laid flat, but lose some space when those go up. You can put one down and store longer items and still keep the other seat up so you don't lose all the trunk space. Air flow could be better in the back but it's not a deal breaker. Kids can adjust the vents and have their own personal heated seats in the winter. Some random issues with updates and tech in terms of the console/carplay but again, not a deal breaker. The moon roof is gorgeous and huge- kids love it day and night.

I liked this car, it worked for our family of 3 with one Doona and a Graco Extend in the bucket seats. Largest complaint was the car seat tilt was impossible to use, it would take my whole body wait, so we never used it. Fortunately w my oldest she would just climb around the littles in the car seats to hop out. I could see the 3rd row being tight as she got older.

I really wanted to love this car... But I hated how it drove. It felt sooo sluggish in comparison to my Expedition, even. I liked the dash and infotainment area in the interior, but the infotainment itself was clunky and not very responsive?

I have enjoyed this vehicle. I had a Kia Telluride prior to this and Loved it but heard of mechanical issues that start around 80k miles and thought it would be best to trade in for the Cherokee L. It has great room inside. My family are all adults so I have no opinion on how it works with a younger family with car seats and gear. It has a very comfortable ride. Passengers had complemented the comfort as well. The interior finishes are nice. I do wish I had upgraded to have cooling seats for summer. But the seats are comfortable. The exterior has a sporty look and always love my black car especially when clean. So far it has been a great car

I have absolutely loved loved loved my Jeep Grand Cherokee L. My biggest and really only complaint is the absence of ceiling air vents in the second and third row. It gets pretty hot in the second and third row- I have learned to start it a few times in the summer before we get ready to leave to make sure it has time to cool down. Other than that, it has been a very reliable, and safe vehicle. I do not think I will get tired of the appearance of it. We also contemplate if we should have gotten a bench seat vs. the captain chairs we have- as we have two large dogs, and road trips are difficult with them with not having a physical bench between our daughter and them. Overall, would recommend it and have thought about getting it again- in a newer model year when the time comes- which will depend on our family needs at that time.

I LOVED this car. The only reason I got rid of it was because had a surprise 3rd pregnancy and I needed a vehicle that a second row bench that would fit 3 car seats and my Jeep Grand Cherokee L had second row captains seats. I had the overland addition. It has so many options I honestly didn’t even use them all. The lane keeping system was incredible and basically worked like hands free driving, all you had to do was keep your hands on the steering wheel (which hand sensors in it) in order for lane keeping to engage. It had a night vision screen which identified if there were animals in the ditches at night. As a mom who loves a good car jam session, the sound system was incredible. Best mom feature was the camera above the backseat to allow you to see what is going on with your kids— this was the BEST feature as a mom with babies.

This vehicle is perfect for the parents who need a little more space with 3 kids, but aren't quite ready to jump to a full size SUV. The features on the premium Overland model make traveling short and long distance trips with 3 kids in car seats a breeze. The power folding seats in the 3rd row make life so easy for grocery runs and stroller storage. 1st, 2nd and 3rd row air vents with rear climate control. The AC cranks COLD.

I traded my 2023 Grand Cherokee L Limited after three years for a 2026, and that says it all. I never had a single service issue with either one. My favorite feature is the Fam Cam, which is the main reason I bought another. I have a two-year-old and a three-year-old, both rear-facing, and being able to see my girls in the back while I drive is priceless. I went with the bench seat this time in case I need to climb in the back with them. We keep the third row folded down, but I like the extra trunk space and having the option for more seats. Two small complaints. The 2026 has a smaller engine than my old one, and it can be a little loud at times. I'd also love ceiling vents in the back, but the side vents do the job, so it's not a big deal. Overall, a comfortable, family-friendly SUV I'd happily buy a third time.

I absolutely love my Jeep Grand Cherokee L. I have an Overland trim with 2 tech packages. It's the perfect mix of sport, tech, and luxury! This is the perfect size for smaller families wanting something big without going full size. We bought it used 2 years ago and have had zero issues with it! Two negatives are gas isn't the best (i'm a city driver) and storage could be a little better! But overall, a wonderful family vehicle.

We’ve really enjoyed our Jeep Grand Cherokee L! One of our favorite features is the sliding second row, which makes it so easy to adjust the space depending on whether we need more legroom for passengers or extra room for cargo. The front row also has great legroom and feels very comfortable, especially on longer drives. I also love the technology and CarPlay. The biggest downsides for us are that there aren’t upper air vents for the second and third rows, which can make it harder to keep everyone comfortable on hot days. We also wish there were more cargo space behind the third row when all three rows are being used. Overall, though, we’ve been very happy with the Grand Cherokee L. It’s comfortable, practical for a family, and has a great balance of space and drivability.

Ours has two bucket seats, and that has done really well with two revolving car seats. The back fit our third car seat well, but we didn’t use anchors per the guidelines of the car seat we had and my child’s weight, so I can’t speak to third row anchors. Manual car seat tilt makes the third row very accessible, and the car isn’t so big that it still feels like your child is way out of reach back there. Sometimes it felt a little tight for leg room for my forward facing child in the third row, but she never complained. Trunk space is limited if the third row is completely up, but we have half the bench down and that has afforded plenty of trunk space. It has been a great car for 3 before we’re ready to invest in something bigger (Expedition, Tahoe, etc).

I know Jeeps are always listed as unreliable but this car has been excellent for us! I love the space, the tech is great (couldnt live without the FamCam). Trunk space with 3rd row up isn't amazing so I'd call this a good car for 2 kids but not more.

As a mom of two with a third on the way, this car has checked all the boxes for us. I feel safe in this car, it handles so well. The second row seats both have car seat tilt which will allow my oldest to easily access the third row once our third baby arrives. Second and third row still have great leg room, and the cargo space really isn’t bad with the third row up, considering this is a “mid size” suv. Love the tech, safety features, and the overall look. I feel like a cool mom that has almost as much room as a mini van, but didn’t have to sacrifice looks or FWD. Love our Jeep and would highly recommend!

I love driving my Jeep, the trunk space with the third row down is really spacious! Access to the third row with the car seat tilt is really easy! My main complaint is that the second row headrests are fixed and not removable. It didn’t cause any issues with car seats but finding high back boosters that fit properly is really a challenge!

I’ve had my 2022 Grand Cherokee L for 2.5 years/55,000 miles and bought it pre-owned. As a mom of two (ages 2 and 4), I absolutely love it. It drives great—quiet, smooth, luxurious but still sporty. It’s easy to park and doesn’t feel huge like a Suburban or truck. The turning radius, parking sensors, backup camera and 360° camera are all fantastic. It handles snow and bad weather really well. I have a Britax Poplar rear-facing and Chicco MyFit forward-facing. Car seat installation is easy and the second-row LATCH anchors are very accessible. With the rear-facing seat, I can’t push the front driver seat all the way back, which matters with my husband’s long legs. The third row is tight, but I like that it only has two seats instead of trying to squeeze in three. My 4-year-old fits comfortably back there and loves it. The tilt feature makes getting him back there and buckling him easy. I wouldn’t want an adult back there for a long trip, though. With captain’s chairs, two rear-facing + two forward-facing is realistic; four forward-facing would work too. Cargo space is excellent with the third row down. With it up, my UPPAbaby Vista just fits with the seat removed, and you could fit a couple carry-on suitcases and a duffle or two. For big road trips, we usually take my husband’s truck. I love the ventilated seats, adaptive cruise, remote start, Apple CarPlay and 360° camera. The rear climate is good, although I wish it had ceiling vents because my rear-facing daughter gets warmer. My only real complaints are limited cup holders and average gas mileage (18–19 mpg with mostly short trips; closer to 20 highway). I previously had a Mazda CX-5 and chose this over the Telluride/Palisade because it felt much sportier and drove better to me. For a family of four, I think it’s an awesome SUV. Three kids is doable; four would be tough. I would absolutely buy it again.

We bought this as a 3rd row vehicle, towing around grandparents, friends, and for room for future sporting or activities. We also found it to be more roomy than our Tesla for long trips. The gas mileage is not great, but understandable for the size of the vehicle. When we were looking, we test drove a Tahoe, a Pathfinder, and a Traverse as well. We were most impressed with this one, giving us the best “bang for our buck”. We have the Overland trim level, and the extra tech is worth it! The fam cam and passenger screen are my favorite parts for the long road trips especially. I can still easily reach the second row and help my kids, and there is a good amount of space for their gear. The trunk is a bit small with the 3rd row up, and its car seat tilt or ability to get in the back row is difficult for adults and taller individuals. We have adjusted and move the kids to the back row and the grandparents or adults in the middle instead. Overall, we have enjoyed this car - ended up getting a great deal on it through negotiations, and would buy it again! Now if only gas prices would go down.

We needed a second car to fit all the kids. My requirements were seemingly simple— car seat friendly, decent on gas, top safety ratings and reliability, heated seats, and AirPlay. My husband’s requirements were more financially focused, as many husbands’ are. We really didn’t want another minivan because we are trying to hold onto the illusion that we are cool, so we decided to look at third row SUVs. The Jeep Grand Cherokee L wasn’t on our radar at first but a targeted ad popped up— I clicked and the rest is history. We love that the AirPlay is cordless, all of our car seats fit and are safe according to manufacturer guidelines, the third row has enough leg room for an actual human with legs, the secret compartment in the trunk gives us extra space and actually allows us to fit our double stroller, the winter package gives me the added bonus of a heated steering wheel, and the blinker doesn’t make a clicking noise that sounds like it just sucked in helium. Plus, it was affordable with great safety and reliability ratings. It gets me to and from work with decent gas mileage on my long commute and has a massive gas tank so I’m filling up less frequently...or really I should say my husband is going out to fill up my gas tank less frequently. So despite all the research I did on a bunch of other cars, we’re happy we took a chance and went with the Jeep. Just don’t be having any super important conversations when you first start the car, it’s real loud…sounds kind of broken, but apparently it’s totally normal.

Jeep
Grand Cherokee L

The jeep grand Cherokee L has been a reliable vehicle for us for 5+ years. This model was released in 2021 and we purchased in 2021. There have been many recalls since, so the repair process is slightly tedious, but I assume this is part of the new model process. We have had to replace one part in the wheel, but no issues since. My advice would be to do research on jeep service providers in your area and find one with many techs or courtesy vehicles. Having to wait days for the repair was difficult with needing a spare vehicle that will fit our car seat. But for a mid-sized SUV in the 40k range, it’s a great car for growing families. The trunk is spacious even with the third row up and I am pleasantly surprised by the third row leg room. The AC in the summer can be a challenge with rear facing car seats, I wish it had roof air vents. We worry about the longevity of the vehicle, just because Jeep isn’t one of those brands known to last 200,000+ miles, but we are glad we haven’t had major issues yet!

Absolutely loved this car and would have been perfect if there was ceiling vents but with having kids they got too hot back there. I also feel like jeeps tech is lacking compared to other cars we have owned

Really love this car but there are issues with the noise cancellation speakers that make a loud humming noise at times like when I shut the door at times. I have a 6 year old and 3 year old and my family fits well!

Although I love the look of this car and I appreciate that jeep doesn’t change their body styles as drastically as other brands which can make your car feel outdated after a few years. Besides that, I regret buying this car. I’ve had so many problems with it. They have replaced the entire computer screen/uconnect TWICE. So many tech issues. So many recalls. In an out of shop constantly. Which for mom means, constantly switching car seats in and out of rentals and such. I also regret getting the bench in the second row. It’s nice having the extra seat but only used for road trips when I wanna sit between kids. The bench is not convenient for daily school pickup lines and errands. The car seat tilt works, but I would have preferred having captains chairs now that I’ve driven it a while. Also with 3 kids, road trips feel tight. I don’t want to upgrade car because this one is paid off so we got a roof container for extra storage for road trips. That worked well. Storage and trunk situation has been great for us, can’t complain there. Functionally it’s a good car. Minus the bench which was a personal preference and my own mistake. But back to back to back issues with Jeep has made me regret this car. Nearly filed a lemon law but didn’t have the energy when I found out how much goes into that.

Bought a used vs new with higher trim (Overland)… love this car. Have only had one issue with leaking fluids - was fixed, covered by warranty. Will drive it now until it has a major failure. Love the way it looks, the interior is spacious for kids. Has a hemi which makes it very powerful and also feel safer.

I absolutely love my Jeep Grand Cherokee L!! It has been such a reliable vehicle for my small family. I love that it has the third row option; however, I hardly use it and always have the seats folded down for plenty of trunk space. I do feel the car would suit our family well if we ever decide to add another little one, but I’m afraid storage space would be pretty tight for long weekend getaways. Everyday driving and grocery runs would be just fine on storage! My main complaint with the vehicle is that there are no ceiling vents!!! Otherwise, it has been so wonderful for me. I love that it doesn’t feel like a huge SUV - it is truly the perfect size. I went for the summit edition, and I truly feel that my vehicle almost hints at luxury with the interior, technology, and all. The Famcam is awesome, and I use it daily. I have had no issues with this Jeep at all, and absolutely no regrets purchasing it!! I plan to keep it as long as we are able!!! And side note, our Nuna infant seat and base fit perfectly…. Now our evenflo revolve 360 slim has done well, too.

I can fit 3 full sized car seats (2 forward facing, 1 rear facing) across in the second row. Comfortable to drive. Great trunk space with the third row down - why I opted for the bench seats in the second row. Overall this car is working great for our family of 5.

This is my 4th jeep and I love the space and flexibility I have to spread out. The back seat is great for a car seat and booster. The only downfall was no lower anchors in the 3rd row, but that was t a deal breaker! Overall comfortable, quiet, peppy, and stylish interior. Wear on seats and rugs have also been fantastic with no cracking or tears.

Love my experience with the Jeep Grand L. My model is the Laredo— so lower on the trim level. However, it has everything I wanted in a SUV. 4 wheel drive, sunroof, leather/suede interior, sport mode for when I need to be faster 🥴, CarPlay, 3rd row with room in the trunk still, captain seats, v6 with decent mpg, and also black alloy rims. So far I have had no problems with my Jeep and I still love it as much as the day I got it!

We lease a Jeep L, and overall I have mixed feelings about it. My main concern is the price relative to what you get with the base model. For a lease payment of $600+ per month, I was surprised by how many basic conveniences it lacks. The trunk isn't automatic, there's no remote start, and there are no heated seats. The key fobs are also annoying and seem to need new batteries constantly. For the price point, I definitely expected more. Where the Jeep L really shines for us is space, especially as a family with three kids. The second row has captain's chairs, and the third row has two seats. All four rear seats have car seat tethers and anchors, which gives you a lot of flexibility with car seat placement. The headrests aren't removable, which is something to keep in mind depending on your car seats. We currently have one child in a rear-facing car seat and one in a high-back five-point harness seat in the second row, both installed using the vehicle seat belt. Our third child rides in a backless booster in the third row. The car seat tilt is a great feature because it makes accessing the third row much easier without completely disrupting the second-row setup. There's also a surprising amount of legroom. Even with the front seats pushed all the way back, our kids still have plenty of room in the second row. I do wish it had ceiling air vents, especially with kids in all three rows. The vents are located near the doors rather than in the ceiling, but thankfully, they're not down on the floor, so the kids can actually feel the air. The trunk space was one of the biggest reasons we chose it. Of all the midsize three-row SUVs we looked at, the Jeep L felt like it had the most usable cargo space behind the third row. That's a huge plus when you're actually using the third row every day and still need room for everything that comes with three kids. Overall, I think the Jeep L is a really practical three-row SUV for families.

I really, truly love this jeep! She has nearly all of the bells and whistles as a “luxury” car. Inside, she’s beautiful - the real wood accents and the very intentionally placed screen. It looks built in, not like slapping an iPad in the middle of the dash like a lot of them nowadays. It suited me well when I had 3 small children in car seats. (Full disclosure: mine came with a center console in the 2nd row. My handy hubby ended up taking it out to make it a pass through and that has been the game changer. I don’t think we could have made it work with the console there.) The 3rd row is easy to access if you have a child in a car seat that still needs help back there. The air ride suspension and different drive modes makes it perfect for our bumpy roads. My kids love the huge sunroof! The downfalls: the trunk space is nothing to write home about. It’s sufficient for every day, but we always have to lay a seat down if we pack for longer trips. You can fit a single Bob stroller in it with the wheels off and 3rd row up. As my kids are getting older, it does feel a lot more cramped in the 2nd and 3rd row. (I’m looking to update to the full mamajama mom bus soon!). Sometimes the infotainment system has some kinks or is slow to respond (that’s a Jeep thing though!). And last con… the paint! Omg the paint… it seems to chip fairly easily. I’ve read about others having issues with their jeeps as well. It must be a really thin coat because I have a lot of tiny chips. They’re not super noticeable unless you look hard, but they’re there. Overall, I would recommend the Jeep Grand Cherokee L to anyone looking for a smooth and stylish ride, yet rugged enough for off roading. She’s like that cool girl in high school… beautiful, stylish, but not afraid to get her hands dirty 🤣. I would say it’s best suited for families with small car seat aged children that don’t need to haul around alllll the sports equipment yet.

I drove this while my car was in the shop for about 2 months, and I was so excited because it was on my short list of a new car. After a few days, I was pretty unimpressed. It feels under powered, I feel like it was not *that* much more interior space than my BMW x3, and I was constantly going to have to put the third row down for more cargo space. I was super grateful to drive it and get a good few weeks in driving it, more than just a quick test drive would have been!

Love this car. It truly has a lot of space even with the 3rd row. I will say I use my car with 2 kids and the 3rd row is typically down to allow more trunk space. However it’s a pretty big trunk and I really like this car as a larger mid size suv.

I purchased this car very quickly after it came out and I was beyond excited! I previously had a grand Cherokee and was looking forward to the extra space for road trips ect. Everything was great on the beginning….the tech was nice, loved the family camera and overall was similar to my previous model with just better tech and more options. I used Nuna ravas with both of my kids one was rear facing and the other forward and I will say if you have a tall driver is is a tight fit. About 8 months into having the car the speakers went out completely, no sound at all. We brought it in and they could not figure out the problem. We went back and forth with two different dealerships starting with the one close to us and then the one we purchased it at about 45 mins from us. They were waiting for a part that they felt would fix the problem. After 68 days of the car being in the shop in total with them trying to fix it we ended up getting a buy back from FCA because the more I went down the rabbit hole I was reading about a lot of people having other much worse problems with our year and model. Ultimately I would never buy a jeep again because of how hard cooperate was to work with and the lack of communication. We were pretty sad because we did originally love the car

Not happy with this SUV, I’d avoid. Leased it brand new, and it had technology issues with its safety features within 24 hours of owning it. The sunroof leaked within a week of owning as well. A/C has gone out randomly and the dealership “couldn’t find an issue”. The seats, even for the diver, are SO uncomfortable. It’s comparable to sitting on a metal folding chair 😅. They also have to be pretty far forward to accommodate rear facing kids in the second row, it feels like your knees are in the dash. The air circulation in the second row is awful. My rear facing kids are constantly overheating in the summer and are drenched in sweat. It doesn't ever cool off for them even with cooling the car off first. It’s like the small vents can’t keep up. Third row legroom is horrible for an adult. I HATE sitting back there. Honestly, I have nothing good to say about it and would not recommend at all.

I have the Jeep Grand Cherokee L and love it for 1 kid! I have the bucket seats and it’s so comfortable to sit in the second row and nurse him when we’re out and about. There’s plenty of room. The trunk space with the third row down is fantastic. I did not buy the car for great gas milage, 18mpg but I was expecting that. It drives like a truck which I like, I drive my car hard and treat it like a truck with my job. The trunk space with the third row down is fantastic. I have a protective trunk liner that can block things from the trunk getting to the second row. I think it will be a great car for 2 kids as well. If I were to have 3 I would upgrade in size. My only complaint is the tech sometimes glitches, currently think there is a short in my backup camera that I’m getting addressed soon.

I have the second row bench. I still love the car just over 3 years after buying it and would buy it again. My only real gripes are the too small door cup holders in the second row and the lack of lower anchors in the 3rd row.

My in-laws got this vehicle to be able to take our 4 kids all at once and it does a good job at that. They have captains chairs that are spacious and work well with booster seats. There are only 2 seats in the third row which means they are nice and spacious. With the third row down the trunk space is huge, with the third row up however it's not much. It drives well and has been reliable for them. Not the newest technology bit works for them

This wasn't a test drive... my mom owns this car. I have driven it when we are visiting her house. It's been easy to put my son's Graco Slim carseat in. I really love the quilted leather seats. I also like the technology in it as you drive. The family view on the screen is a nice added bonus to not need to have a baby camera. Overall, seems like a great car!

I love the looks of this car- both exterior and interior. The third row feels spacious compared to other mid size SUV’s I’ve been in. But we have had nothing but issues with ours :( we have had transmission issues, trunk issues, center console issues, fuel pump issues, etc. We also have had bad experiences with Jeep dealerships even being able to diagnose the problems. Aside from the lack of reliability, the back seat ventilation is bad. My child who sits in a rear facing seat gets almost no airflow and feels warm and sweaty when I take her out. Big bummer because this was my dream car!

This car drives more rough and feels heavy. I have an overland with a lot of extra options. The massaging seats are definitely a bonus. The seats are more on the hard side. The second and third row are tight. Right now we have 3 Graco slim fit 3lx and 1 infant seat. We have the captain chairs. I almost immediately regretted purchasing this car as the space is just not there. Truck space is minimal with the 3rd row up. Overall would recommend for a family with 2 or less car seats or older children.

I have owned the Grand Cherokee L Summit since 2022. I traded in my 2015 Grand Cherokee to get this. I wanted to stay in the Jeep family bc I loved my Grand Cherokee so much, but I wanted a 3rd row. I purchased the summit bc I loved to look of the wheels a lot more than the other trim looks and it had captain chairs with a center console between them. This was my first 3 row vehicle, so I didn't think of how it would be with the center console between the 2 captain chair. I ABSOLUTELY hate it! This is my only true true down side to it. It comes with all the bells and whisles...build in sunshades which I loved for when I had my kids in the car, love that it has wireless Apple Car Play, massagers in the driver and passenger seats, family viewing video (there is a camera in the ceiling behind the second row that you can see your rear facing children on the front console). I am able to put carseats in either captain seats and also in the both the back seats. It drives so well and I have only had 1 real issue with it. The front window washer hoses have come apart so that the window washer fluid does not spray up on the window, it sprays out the front grill of the vehicle. I got it fixed 1 time and now it has done it again. I have loved this car so much and I wouldn't be in the market for a new one at all, but my niece turns 16 and she needs a vehicle. Picture is of the center console in the second row. (Will attach more later)

My only complaint is the buckles in the back 2 rows go down when not in use, makes it harder for a 6 year old on a booser to buckle alone.

I absolutely love my 2022 black Jeep Grand Cherokee L! It has been a great fit for our family and gives me the perfect balance of space, comfort, technology, and style. One of my favorite features is the 2nd row bench seat. I specifically chose the bench after listening to the Carpool podcast, and am so glad I had the knowledge to convince my husband to go for the bench! It gives us the flexibility to seat up to seven people, but on a normal day I keep the 3rd row folded down and have a large amount of trunk space. I also appreciate that with the bench seat, there's a solid barrier between the cargo area and my kids, which helps reduce the risk of loose items becoming projectiles in a crash. Thanks to the Carpool podcast and crew for educating families on cars to buy, carseat setups, and safety!

The jeep grand Cherokee L has been a nightmare at times. We have had so many electrical issues, battery issues and it has the worst ventilation ever. We cannot wait to change our vehicle.

The car has been great and held up very well with two kids beating it up the past 5 years. The only drawbacks: 1. No ceiling vents in rear (and overall AC power seems low for a car of this size) 2. Occasional issues with tech system i.e. alerts saying the 4WD isn’t working or other error messages. When getting checked out at the dealer, we have needed to get a software update but never any actual work needed to be done

Although it’s a beautiful car, unfortunately, since the day we bought it, it has given me nothing but problems. It has left me and my kids stranded, and at only 42,000 miles, we started having major issues. By 67,000 miles, I had to get a new motor, and I’ve also had to replace the transmission along with multiple other things. Unfortunately, I’m a single mom, so I’m kind of stuck with it for now. I’m also a full-time dental hygiene student, which means my income is basically crap right now, So I’m just stuck with this thing and praying that someday I can finally get out of it! I really don’t want to be a negative Nancy because, like I said, it IS a beautiful car, but I would hate for another mom to end up in the same situation. The worst feeling in the world is not having a reliable vehicle when you have kids and you’re the one responsible for getting everyone everywhere. Honestly, it’s become one of the biggest reasons I want to be successful in dental hygiene. The first thing I’m doing when I finally graduate and have some decent money? I’m going to buy Momma a new damn car.

As a family of four, this car has all the room we need. The exterior is clean while also being rugged, the drive is nice, and the second row has plenty of space for RF car seats, FF car seats, infant seats, etc. We usually operate with the third row down so we have more than enough space in the back for strollers, wagons, and bags when traveling. The Cons: Two main drawbacks from me. One, the second row has non-removable headrests which is a huge pain for car seats. Two, there aren't ceiling vents and with it being such a big and dark car, it takes a while for the second row and back to cool down.

A very good looking car! It is functional for a family of 5 but it is tight. I personally have my 2 oldest in the 3rd row (FF) and my youngest (RF) in the second row. I am able to also fit my Zoe twin in the trunk with this set up. I love how it drives and I do really love the infotainment system. It is tight and could use some more storage options.

I wanted to love it so much, but with four boys ages 6-14 they just don’t fit with all of their things and loading and unloading would be so tight. The backseat wouldn’t be comfortable for long rides for the longer legged kids either. The price point was great, but the room wasn’t there.

Love the size of this car for our family and the look of the car. Unfortunately, we have and continue to have a lot of electrical issues. We ended up buying an extended warranty for this reason and I want to keep this car for a long time but I am hesitant to with the ongoing issues we have had.

Upgraded to this car after having our second baby (and getting a second dog) and it has perfectly fit our needs! We enjoy the captain's chairs + car seat tilt allow for easy access to the 3rd row and when not in use, there is ample trunk space with the 3rd row down!

The third row is spacious with only two seats. Infant car seat does not leave much leg room for passenger. Love how high it sits and is one of the smoothest rides I’ve experienced. I do feel like better cup holder in the rear doors would be a plus and pull up sunshades.

I have my fair share of issues with my Jeep grand Cherokee L. I have had tailgate malfunctions, sensor issues and some repairs done to the undercarriage of the vehicle. It is great for 2 kids but I already know there’s no way it is going to be good for any more children. I like the trunk size of the vehicle. I like the looks of it and the technology. The issues I have more come with repairs needed and I just don’t trust that it will last me much past 150,000 miles. I think it drives great, we live in a very snowy and icy area and I have had no issues with driving in those conditions.

While I do recommend this car overall, I want to get some complaints out first. Sometimes the sensors have a mind of their own. There have been several occasions where the dash tells me to get the 4wd serviced, only to clear itself after exiting and re-starting the car. There have also been instances where the technology is super slow and also needs a reset. Otherwise, the drive and feel of the car has been fantastic. It doesn't feel like I'm driving a big huge vehicle which I really appreciate. The feel of the drive is smooth, and road noise isn't too loud. I have the captain's chairs in the second row and like that they have nice accessibility with car seat tilt and a wide enough aisle to get in the 3rd row as needed. I generally have the 3rd row down for extra trunk space, but there is still a lot of room in the trunk with the 3rd row up. 3rd row is ok for adults short distances but would definitely recommend younger passengers if that's an option as the seats are not as comfortable.

As a mom of 2 under both under 5 and still in car seats, the vehicle size is great. Loads of trunk space with 3rd row down and decent size with it up. The drive is really comfortable. The exterior and interior design is beautiful. My biggest gripe is the technology. The display screen can be buggy and freeze or not turn on at all. The start/stop feature is irritating and lane assist both things I’ve opted to shut off but that is sort of personal preference. Overall would definitely recommend.

I loved the look of this car—the white exterior with the black top and that gorgeous peanut‑butter interior. It was packed with features, and the massaging seats were amazing. It could park itself, and the heads‑up display was a great touch. I really wanted to love it and keep it forever, but I bought it brand new and the screens never worked properly. It had three—one for the driver, one in the center, and one on the passenger side—and you couldn’t see anything while driving. It spent over a month in the shop while they tried to figure out why the middle screen kept going completely black and wouldn’t sync with the driver display. The second row was captains chairs with center console the seats were very comfortable but there was not a lot of room. I eventually traded it for my used ’23 Tahoe… which also ended up having tech problems. Ugh.

Editing to add: The "fam cam" feature is AMAZING and I loved it and miss it now. High price tag for a not so great car. While the car did have a nice ride (because we had air ride suspension), it was in the shop more than we had it!! The features were cheaply made and not consistent to what a $70k+ car should have. Something in the door panel broke off and was rolling around, the lumber in my drivers seat would "punch" me in the lower back everytime I took off from a stop light. The second row bucket seats are incredibly uncomfortable and they are hard & have no shape to them. A positive about the backseat was that you can manually scoot them back creating an insane amount of leg room. I really wanted to love this car but it ended up being lemon lawed because of the track record of being in the shop. Upon review we had 17 pages (!!) of service history within 3 years.

I did love my GCL summit reserve. V8 over v6 performance wise made a big difference. Traded this due to size. I got the bench and it made it nearly impossible to access the third row with both our girls in carseats. When I moved my Oldest to a Nuna aace booster she could not buckle on her own and it was even challenging for me. With our two girls and two dogs, we traded for a Tahoe and are absolutely loving it. I know there are a lot of reliability concerns with the GCL. I have owned 2 GCL summits and other jeeps and never had any service related issues! This car was expensive on gas with the v8 taking premium. I spend less for my Tahoe and get the same gas mileage

This car is great for a small family. We have had 2 grand Cherokee Ls back to back. We started with no children and now we have 3. We love the look of the car and the tech. We have had no mechanical issues in either vehicle other than it being noisy on the road. With 2 children we were able to also travel with our two large dogs in the back with the third row down. Now that we have 3 small children it’s much more complicated to transport anything large. I love the car seat tilt. It has made it super easy for my 3 year old to climb into the back and get into the seat and for me to reach through and buckle. The 3 year old has plenty of room and the 2 year old in the second row also has enough room behind the drivers side. The second row is spacious enough for a rear facing or infant seat to fit and be comfortable in the front. Overall we would recommend to smaller families but we have definitely outgrown it. Transporting strollers plus groceries or luggage is tough with three children. Our set up is an Uppababy mesa behind the passenger, and evenflo 360 behind the driver and a Chico behind the evenflo in the 3rd row. One thing I dislike is the third row not having lower anchors

Overall good car with decent space for the midsize SUV category. I have had trouble since day 1 with the screen freezing and not working, we have taken it in to have fixed multiple times but unfortunately still happens. I also wish it had more tech options. Compared to other vehicles in its class I feel the grand Cherokee L is lacking quite a bit.
