- Spacious Second & Third Rows: The second row offers excellent legroom (even for taller adults), and the third row is more usable than many competitors — especially when you slide the second row forward. Ceiling vents in both rows are also a huge plus for kids in rear-facing seats.
- Massive Center Console & Cup Holder Game: The front storage is impressive. The center console is deep and practical, and there are up to four cup holders within reach of the drive.
- Strong Towing Power (Up to 7,900 lbs): If you tow a boat, camper, or trailer, this is where the Tahoe shines. The V8 engine delivers solid power, and for families who need capability beyond carpool duty, this is a major advantage.
- Three Full Sets of Lower Anchors in the Second Row: This is a big win for families. Every seat across the second-row bench has its own set of lower anchors, plus tether anchors in all six rear seats. That gives you strong flexibility for three-across setups and multiple forward-facing installs.
The Exterior
I really love the exterior of the Chevy Tahoe, the 2021 model was redesigned and overall, it’s a strong look.
- LED daytime running lights are sleek and modern
- Hood lines are bold and aggressive
- Blacked-out badging and trim (especially on the Z71) look sporty
- Tucked rear wiper keeps the back end clean
First Row
Interior: Less Excited
The specific Tahoe I toured was a used 2021 with 20,000 miles priced at $71,000.
And here’s my issue:
For $70K+, the interior just doesn’t feel premium.
- A lot of visible plastic across the door panels and dash
- Analog-style gauges that feel dated
- No panoramic sunroof on this trim
For that price point, expectations are high — and aesthetically, this interior didn’t wow me.
That said… functionality is a different story.
Driver’s Seat & Front Row Functionality
Here’s what I did love:
- Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
- Piano-key style shifter
- Heated & ventilated seats
- USB-A and USB-C ports
- Massive center console (seriously impressive)
And the cup holders? Elite.
There are four cup holders within reach of the driver. As a road-tripping mom, that matters. My water, my husband’s water, today’s iced coffee, yesterday’s iced coffee — we’re covered.
You sit high. Very high. Truck high.
Some people love that commanding view. Others may prefer something slightly more car-like for daily errands.
Second Row
Second Row: Spacious but Missing Key Features
Legroom? Excellent.
At 6 feet tall with the driver’s seat set for me, I still had tons of room in the second row.
What I liked:
- Ceiling vents (huge win for rear-facing car seats)
- Power outlet (hello, pumping moms 👏)
- Three full sets of lower anchors across the bench
- Tether anchors in all six rear seats
What I didn’t like:
- No sunshades on a $71K vehicle
- No middle head restraint (a safety concern for adults sitting in the middle)
The bench configuration offers strong flexibility for three-across car seat setups, which I love. But here’s the catch…
There is no car-seat-friendly access to the third row.
You cannot tilt the seat forward with a car seat installed.
For larger families, that’s something to seriously consider.
Third Row
Third Row: Surprisingly Roomy
With the second row pushed back, third-row legroom is tight but usable. Slide the second row forward, and it becomes much more manageable.
Highlights:
- Ceiling vents (again — yes!)
- USB-C ports on both sides
- Three seating positions
But again — no middle head restraint.
Trunk
Trunk Space: The Biggest Question Mark
This is where expectations need adjusting.
For a full-size SUV, the trunk behind the third row feels… midsize.
A single stroller fits.
A large double stroller? Probably not without folding seats.
Compared to competitors, it’s underwhelming for a vehicle of this size.
The manual seat-folding process also feels clunky. When you’re juggling kids, groceries, and a stroller, every extra step matters.
Safety
The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe holds a 4-star overall rating from the NHTSA, with 5-star ratings for side crashes and 4-star ratings for frontal crashes. It comes standard with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and Teen Driver technology.
